Personally, I think Glenn Gould is the BEST BACH PIANIST EVER!!! He inspired me to play the same keyboard concerto. If anyone agrees with me that Gould is the best Bach player ever, like this comment!

I agree. I had conversation with someone about Glenn playing or not playing the Piano instead of Harpsichord, etc, etc. I think the Piano, the way Glenn plays it, in his hands, it is even better, and the way you can hear the full bass lines, the different voices, parts, it is great, poetical, and the mood he expresses, in Bach Fugues, or any tune he wrote, gives to me the idea , the feeling was just the Bach intending to feel, if I made meself clear.
It is such an honour. This is what the internet is for.
I'm crying out of joy!
Me too
There was only Only one GG!
You've waited long enough for such an interpreter! Lucky us!
Oh Bach!! Welcome back... been a while. We missed you so much
u mad
When the Earth meets Heaven it is because Gould is playling Bach... 🎶🎼❤️
I have no formal musical education, but this captivating performance is a supreme example of why I’ve been hooked on classical music for decades: unsurpassed depth of mind and soul.
This is hands down the best performance I've ever heard of this concerto
Gould was simply the best ever, and there have been some greats, but this guy is just from another planet or something, and I mean that as the highest compliment.
Genius Gould! I’m just so grateful that we can experience this in 2020!
One utter prodigy he was. Like no one else. Experiencing his playing is already a transcendent experience; watching him makes you totally subjugated by his persona, and that’s a totally exhilarating and moving experience. Thankfully he left a large legacy and somehow he never died. Bless you, Glenn!
This is just magnificent. It’s like hearing this work for the first time… even though I’ve been listening to it for the last 50 years.
Hahaha hilarious
Glenn, a sad loss at an early age. Brilliant pianist..Who could disagree?
Everything - as is to be - is meant to be.
All the great and famous pianistes are totaly respectables, music is not a competition

During my coronavirus illness, I became a Glenn Gould fan. His music helped me a lot in my recovery.
This is certain ! Bach is a universal medicine. The greatest genius in arts of all times.
it's been two weeks, have you recovered?
@@cutiepiedim I haven’t fully recovered yet, but I’m much better now. My doctor says symptoms can last up to six months.
@@gabriellakiss1719 get well soon and I wish you the best!
@@cutiepiedim Thank you!
Every time I hear the Andante I can’t help feeling Bach was grieving, not self pity but true grief. I know he buried a lot of his children.
100% one of the most heart wrenching pieces Bach ever composed.
My favorite Bach concerto with my favorite pianist!
What can you say. The best of humanity.
Gould was the first pianist, other than my secondary school music teacher, I heard playing Bach. His 1955 Goldberg Variations is an absolute high point of music.
1980s goldberg is better.
I like both recordings, they're very different :)
@@joelra3702 I agree. Both great recordings but I do prefer the 1955 one.
Prefer ?
Better ?
Simply Différent !
This was originally written as a Violin Concerto in A minor, BWV 1041. But Glenn Gould, with his magic fingers, makes the piano sing beautifully!
And his left hand has a life of it’s own! He always watches it to make sure it doesn’t get “out of line!”☺️
Glenn lives even now in his recordings
Just amazing!!
I was two years old when 🤔 this aired on public television 📺 in 1967. What a beautiful performance.
My father was born one year before this version then.
What a treasure! A treat! One of the great piano pieces ever written performed by THE Bach interpreter.
I would put Karl Richter as one of those THE Bach interpreters
Talk about mastery of dexterity and dynamics, phrasing, every element of playing is astounding! ☺
Holy crap, that was a very young Alex Trebek (Jeopardy) introducing Glenn! Both Canadian icons up where I live. RIP to both.
If you think about it, many of the ppl in this recording are no longer with us sadly. But the music lived on and they will forever be apart of this magnificent human history
Every note is crystal clear !
3:02....not really.

Hearing this : a rare reason not to regret for having been on this earth !
I hope you find many more reasons not to regret being here. Humans create so much drama, but there is beauty all around.
Charlotte Rose so does suffering....
Immortal Glenn Gould changed piano playing, Bach interpretation and recording forever. . .
And nobody seems to realize how much he has done it
Can you explain why Gould’s Bach is so important? I don’t have the musical history background to understand
@@joshdraper56 It’s not Gould's Bach, it’s Gould's piano technique. It’s the sounds he produced which gave his interpretations an incuestionable seal of eternity. It’s something you experience, almost if not immediately.
I felt that the first time I heard his interpretation of Bach's 2nd English Suite, which was also the first time I knew about Gould's existence.
Stuff like this makes up for the 95% crap that occupies most of the internet. Thanx for posting these. They are wonderful.
This G minor, more than any other except maybe Brandenburg #2, has been with me all my life, and the older I get, the more it digs deep. And although I've heard Mrs. Hewitt play it dozens of times, Glenn Gould's interpretations are always riveting.
There's no andante quite like this one.
That andante... I'm speechless, indeed beauty beyond words is the only apt description.
Yes you can see this kind of emotionalism within a strict structure influence many of Mozart's piano concertos later.
Glenn Gould possesses something which is a mix of talent and passion and the way that he sways to and fro during his performance is very peculiar indeed. It looks as though he is spellbound by the artistic power of the music that he is playing.
When Gould plays it feels like he is not playing for the audience, he is playing for himself
Absolutely true
Gould does not play for himself, just as he does not play for others. He absorbs himself into the music and absorbs the music into his being, so that the music manifests THROUGH him.
@@caprolupo8321
One could also blasphemously say that Bach plays Gould when Gould actually plays Bach.
And God.
@@alexandervonkarnstein God plays Bach through Gould by transitivity. Bach's entire being was devoted to expressing the divine after all.

Such an amazing performance!! Just in awe!!
So astonishing he NEVER needs a score for such complex music! This guy is out of this world.....
Absolutely. He is omniscient in his interpretation and understanding of the music.
That's not what makes him amazing. Most decent pianists don't need scores even for much more complex music than this. What makes Gould amazing for me is how he understands the music, combines intellect with physicality, and reveals the unity and large scale architecture of the music to the point where it feels almost as though he plays the entire piece in a single breath.
We are in front of two geniuses. The very best is the Composer, the second ond is Glenn!
Thanks from Ukraine for this amazing music💙💛
Immortal Glenn Gould changed piano-playing, Bach interpretation and recording forever. Everyone who touches a keyboard after Gould should study his body of work. There will never be another.
Never! never! He,s still the unreacheble pianist!
For me, one of the outstanding characteristics of his playing is an almost metronome perfection. I love every piece of his that I can hear. Thanks so much for the person who put these pieces where we can enjoy them in our homes.
@Craig Johnson I have to agree.
ua-cam.com/video/Xl5qYlXEUtI/v-deo.html
@@ladykiri42 The "metronome perfection" is a defect. It is wooden and mechanical. Listen to Richter's version. Richter is in a dialog with the orchestra. He is so much more expressive and interesting. ua-cam.com/video/Xl5qYlXEUtI/v-deo.html
@@Carvin0
(1) Craig Johnson referred to Karl Richter, not Sviatoslav Richter.
(2) Sviatoslav Richter's performance is sloppy, not passionate. Gould uses no pedal.
Sviatoslav Richter hides his sloppiness, and adds more sloppiness, with pedal.
(3) Karl Richter performs the concerto with harpsichord, rather slowly, as Gould does.
Unlike Sviatoslav Richter's sloppy, muddy performance, Karl Richter's performance is clear, clean - exquisitely PRECISE - partly because his instrument is a harpsichord.
Unlike Gould, Karl Richter slides VERY, VERY SLIGHTLY away from "metronome perfection," but only as surely Bach did, because Bach was a creature of the baroque.

This was an easy gig for Gould. There’s not much that can go wrong with talent like his. Bach’s music runs itself all fundamentals being met. Baroque music is after all more about the writer than the performer. I love how he adds bottom octaves on the piano.
Not dismissing Gould at all but something like the 48 or the Goldbergs are where we really see what he can do.
