U live in upstate NY near Canada. I love your stories. It's like listening to my grandpa telling me stories about Brooklyn NY when he was a kid. He was born in 1898.
While many people don't understand life in the Appalachian Mountains and often make fun of us, it brings a smile to my face to hear you tell stories and it brings back memories of my grandparents and great grandparents. Thank you for taking time to do so.
Watching from Buncombe County NC which borders Haywood County. My grandpaw was born in Madison County NC in 1902. Loved his stories about seeing the first automobile getting electricity. It was around 1970 or 72 when he got a phone. Love your videos keep em coming. Would love to have that book
This is a very interesting video about an area I'm not familiar with and I'm watching it from a town called Green Valley Arizona which is south of Tucson Arizona and about 30 Mi north of Nogales Mexico I plan to relocate to Eastern Tennessee to be with my girlfriend who is from Sullivan County Tennessee many thanks for the great videos
Thank you for sharing Uncle Fed's story. People like Uncle Fed and his life would be forgotten if it wasn't for storytellers like you . Many thanks, JD. God 🙏 bless 🙏.
My daddy is 94 years old. Shares his birthday with Veterans Day. I love your stories and play your videos for him. Our roots are in the Cherokee National Forest area which makes this sort of history like a family memory for us. Thank you so much.
JD I loved this as did my wife and her relatives for a very good reason. My wife is the great-great-great granddaughter of Fed Messer. He had a son named Jeff Messer , who had a daughter named Martha.Martha Married John Justice from Madison County NC, specifically the Spring Creek Section of Madison County. Martha had several children and my supposes mother was Mae Justice who married Roy Suttles. They had four daughters my wife Mary Sue Suttles. She and I married and she is now a Pressley. I am from Haywood County and am very familiar with the Dutch Cove Section of the county.. I immediately called her in when I saw this documentary posted. She was moved to tears and joy flooded her to hear your story being shared. Uncle Fed was truly 115 when he finally passed away. He swam across the Pigeon River at 105 years young. Many people couldn't accomplish that at 15 years of age. Longevity of life has followed this clan even till now. 90 plus years of age is very common in this family. Only one of Martha's children remains today and that is Reva who lives in Seymour TN area. She is 94 years young and still active and very keen of the mind. Thank you for sharing hopefully I have provided some further insight into this ongoing story of Fed's clan. Mary Sue and I live in Bassett VA and have been married 38 years as of July 17th, 2024. Thank you Neil Pressley
Wow, that’s fascinating! I love hearing tell of the older generations and people that are connected to them in some way. I truly believe what Mr. Fed said when he was talking about the longevity of life and that’s staying as close to nature as possible. Oh my, how I would’ve loved to talk with him and watch him cut a leg. I’m so glad that I saw your comment and I pray God continues to bless you and your family. ❤
Im watching you on a hot quiet morning with a little wren singing his heart out on my back porch. Im in south central Pennsylvania in the blue ridge. What a wonderful account of this wonderful piece of history. Thankyou for the great content brother, and keeping these chapters in quiet history alive that really speak about what America is to some of us. God bless!!
Thank you for that picture you painted. I'm typing you back from the front porch in the hills of eastern Tennessee as the birds sing their songs all around me.
Hello on a quiet morning in Phoenix, Arizona, Arizona gonna be about 118° today. This summer is here. I keep positive as I just know every day is one more day closer to cooler weather and 6 to 7 months gorgeous winter weather or everyone is outside every day you can imagine from hiking, biking and flying higher balloon, lakes water skiing anything you can imagine
Thank you JD .one of your best story ever it brought a tear to my eye. My grand father to supply's to an old hermit in the area once a month fir years .When my grand father passed I took of the task. I was young strait out of high school and now whish I had documented all old John Renolds knew. He lived in the woods with no running water or power. He had driven a model aa ford up into the 70s. I still have that old truck and a maytag twin cilinder engine he gave me . Looking back sure miss the old fellow. One of the most memorable things was his house cat Peat that had shown up at his door as a kitten . When I met peat fir the first time he's was peeking around the corner of the large depot stove in the middle of the room . The stove provided the only light and made peats eys glow. John said I must be all right cuz peat didn't take to strangers. When peat stepped out i saw that peat came up to my knee and must have weiged fifty pounds . I asked what kind of cat he was John sad (he is one of those manx cats see he ain't got no tail) I about fell out of my chair😅. Old peat was the bigest bob cat I had ever saw. Thanks JD love the channel.
I'm watching from Baltimore, Maryland which isn't very close to Appalachia but my family was from West Virginia and these stories make me feel a little closer to my heritage. ❤
Hey from Enid, OK. Love you and your wonderful stories. We once lived in Etowah, NC for about 3 years. I loved the area and the people. They adopted me and my family like their own. With time, I've learned what a true gift that was. My memories are many and warm.
Watching from Whitehouse Ohio this morning. As a Marine Corps brat, I love hearing your stories as my Dad was stationed in N.C. twice. I was privileged to spend part of my childhood there; it’s beautiful country.
I’m probably too late, but I live in the Ohio river valley in Ohio.. I enjoy your channels immensely. My wife and I are both disabled and at 67 years young we don’t get out much at all. I was born in Pineville Ky. so your stories are all close to my old stomping ground. My family was from all over Tenn. and North Carolina. You just keep doing what you do! You don’t know what a difference you have made in my life.
Hey, Bruce from Saskatchewan Canada. My grandma live til 102. Thanks for all the stories. Since I was a kid I’ve loved stories of the old days. Take care
I'm from a little town in Vermont. Watching your videos makes me miss my Dad and all his stories. Growing up my Dad was a trapper and we grew up hunting and growing our own food. Oh the simple life. Thank you for sharing your stories with us.

Thanks for all your stories JD! I have heard every one of them. I so enjoy it. It reminds me of when I was little and my sister would read to me every night at bedtime. I'm in Virginia and look forward to your next story. I will say I think the saddest and most heart breaking was Molly's story. I went crazy waiting to hear all 3. Take care and see ya next time :)

Hello. I’ve been enjoying your stories for a month or so with my friend Barbara. She loves you too by the way. I save it until bedtime, sorta like a bedtime story. It’s the perfect bedtime story. My name is Deborah and I’m listening in Carrollton, Georgia! Thank you. You are pure joy to listen to!
❤️❤️ I’m from Southeast Missouri! I have family in NC. I always loved our family vacation to Smokey Mountains! I’d love to live like Uncle Fed! I love your stories! Thank you for sharing them with us! I share you n your stories with anyone that will listen! We have a panther that travels near our farm. I’ve only seen one, one time in 43 years. Beautiful yet scary! Hope you had a wonderful 4th!
What a legend he is. Thank you for sharing this story.I enjoy every one. I have been a lot of places in my life but no place like home here in the Appalachian mountains
Watching from Perth Australia , listening to you tell your story’s always takes me outside of these four walls if even for just a little while , thank you
Love these videos of Appalachia life in the early days. I didnt grow up here, but in SoCal. I now live in Franklin, North Carolina in the rolling hills of these beautiful mountains.
Your stories make me think of my Grandmother! I still miss her so much even at 69. She was my storyteller! Thank you for sending me back to the “Good ole days” she talked about, here in central Louisiana!
Hi, that's an interesting biography. I'm in Melbourne Australia but I'm proud to say that most of my childhood was in Lewis county Kentucky, my dad born in breathitt county Kentucky, his dad from Harlan county Kentucky. Some really good people and beautiful land throughout Appalachian mountains. I'm glad to have come across your channel.
I came here on a job, loved the nature and climate and it just became a happy transition. It's rated in the top 10 cities most years. And it's like KY NC TN Appalachian mountains, with the ability to get away and be immersed into the great outdoors. The Victorian Alps are a short drive north of me.
I’m watching from Albion, Idaho. We’re up in the Idaho mountains in a small farming community. It’s a huge adjustment as I used to be a Flight Attendant, but now that I’ve seen the world, I’ve found that the smaller my world is, the more content I am. I love my Saturday mornings with the Appalachian Storyteller! ☕️ ❤
Great story sharing, thank you. I'm sitting at home on a Saturday night, remembering my childhood in North central Arkansas. These stories always remind me of my mom and dad growing up. I'm sad and happy all at the same time. It was simple and easy then, I was just to much of a hurry to notice. These stories remind me of then. Thanks.
Thank you so much for this wonderful channel what you do is so awesome I love this channel I cant get enough of it the storytelling is beautifully done . Please keep the story's coming
Listening from S. Alabama, small town of Opp( short for Opportunity). I love this story!! I really love to hear you deliver these stories. Your voice makes me homesick for the mountains. I was raised in N. Georgia in the foothills. The mountains have always seemed more like “home” to me♥️♥️
@@TheAppalachianStorytellerI’m 48 yrs old, grew up fascinated with the American cowboy films, watched them with my dad as a kid…lived in Boston for 15yrs, travelled all over America, I loved West Virginia and the Carolina’s..moved back home in 2017, I stumbled on your channel about a month ago, making my way through your content….you do a great job and your voice is excellent 👍🏻
I’m from Fort Wayne, IN. I lived in Upstate South Carolina for a few years and fell in love with the Appalachian Mountains. I love your channel and all the stories you tell. Thank you. Have a great next week. Stay safe out there.
J.D , you and Donnie wells have taught me much about this land I call home ,its rich heritage and its ruff and tufff peoples, it the good and bad. the Appalachian mountains will always be home to me , living in Eastern KY , in Knox County is ok , and I've been all over these mountains and ridges ,talked many old folk and I have to say I'm glad there are folks like you and Donnie to tell our stories , had tales. May God bless you all your days.
That was a great story. Watching from Greensburg Ky. Sitting at my kitchen table. ❤. By the way do you have a copy of your book on CDs. I like listening to stories on trips in the car.
I love listening to you, finding out about people in history and seeing their life. Though hard, they lived it. I've lived up & down the east coast my whole life and absolutely love North Carolina the best. We live in LOUISBURG, just outside of Raleigh
Born and raised in West Virginia. Currently I live in Northern Florida, but WV will always be my home. I’m trying to get a transfer back, unfortunately there’s not a lot of jobs there. The opiate epidemic really took its toll of all of Appalachia. Lost some goods friends too. People who haven’t been to the Appalachia mountains just don’t get it, it’s one of the most beautiful places on earth. And filled with some amazing people as well. I just don’t feel grounded anywhere else. Thank you for your channel and stories, they always put a smile on my face.
Only reason I'm not entering the free book drawing, JD, is bc I already have one. The free one should go to someone who hasn't read it yet. ...... Anyway, I certainly agree with Fed that a life out in nature as much as possible is the best prescription for a long and healthy life. No telling how many people are walking around today partly bc I'd rather take a shovel to the garden than take a shovel to them. I was digging one day and somebody asked why. I said I had to do something about my mil and burying her seemed best. Would you believe that person reported me to the police? 😂 Apparently nobody else was half as amused as I'd been. Oh well, I've always known the price of being a smartalec.
All your stories go straight to ny heart. I wish I could live there and forget about the world. These wholesome people are definitely my tribe. Regards from Scotland
And they are literally your people. Most in the area were Scotts sent to Ireland for a time, double-crossed by the Brits (go figure), then left for America and ended up in the Appalachians
I’m watching your channel every day, from wherever I’m at! Today I’m in San Antonio Texas! I dearly love how you tell us these amazing stories, and with your daughter’s voice chiming in every now and then, just makes it even better ❣️
I'm watching from Elk Point Alberta Canada. I just sort of stumbled onto your UA-cam channel a few months ago. I've never been outside Canada except for a trip to Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire in my childhood but I enjoy learning about the places and people in your stories.
Fascinating! I had a grandmother who lived to her 105th birthday - hope I am healthy enough and mentally acute to live that long!! Love your stories!!!
I am in Fargo, North Dakota. My paternal grandmother lived to be 104 and lived in three centuries also! Ran across your videos just a couple of months ago and have been enjoying them ever since. :)
Now this is a great story and told by one of the best. Thanks JD WATCHING FROM DUNNELLON, FLORIDA Just in case I win a book, please give it to the next one. Because of my eyes I wouldn't be able to read the whole thing. Not that I wouldn't enjoy it now. Thanks for another great story JD. Have a great weekend...👍😉

That was a great story. Watching from Greensburg Ky. Sitting at my kitchen table. ❤. By the way do you have a copy of your book on CDs. I like listening to stories on trips in the car.
Stay tuned
I love listening to you, finding out about people in history and seeing their life. Though hard, they lived it. I've lived up & down the east coast my whole life and absolutely love North Carolina the best. We live in LOUISBURG, just outside of Raleigh
I'm watching from Massachusetts 13:01
Thank you Aimee!
Thank you ❤️
Only reason I'm not entering the free book drawing, JD, is bc I already have one. Oh well, I've always known the price of being a smartalec.
reported to the police? wow... humans can be so disappointing sometimes
You are welcome at our house any time😅😊
@@mikearringtonbf52 - Why, though? And do you have mil problems that need fixing too? :)
Thank you ❤️
I absolutely love the story's I live in Michigan and listen to you all the time
Thank you 😊
