Is there more info about the picture you show around 4:12? My maternal grandparents grew up in Appalchia and this photo stirs a feeling in me. I'd like to frame a copy if I could find it.
Me too, I was born at UT hospital but my parents is down in vonore Sweetwater of maynardville. Yeah you got it I'm adopted. But I truly remember the goat man as a young child we look forward you think it was about two or three you know seasons and then we couldn't find him no more going up and down greenback , Tn.I believe that's was where he was. Then after a while mom must just checked or whatever or maybe it's a newspaper that he had passed away.😊
The Goat man would travel along state route Hwy. 136 through North West Georgia ( Calhoun / Sugar valley ) countryside back in the early & mid 60s . I was just a pre teen boy but got to meet this soft spoken gentle natured man several times. My grand parents would always take him whatever food they had available. He was camping down by the spring in Sugar valley one year and someone shot and killed one of his goats with a bow and arrow. I remember him as always allowing the folks in and around our community to visit and pet his goats. He was always very welcoming to all.
I was born in 1949 I lived in south Baldwin country Georgia and remember the goat man coming down the road in front of the house my brother and I were excited to see him and his goats.
I am now 84 I grew up in Springfield Tn, I now live in Fl I had the pleasure of seeing The GOAT MAN when I was a small boy, I'm glad I did, the kids today would have been delighted to have seen him.
I was born in Cleveland, TN in 1959. I well remember the excitement of the goatman coming past our home. My mother would hurry to pack some food for him, and we would rush down to the road to meet him and his herd of colorful goats!
I was born in Blue Ridge Ga and was raised in Blairsville Ga. I was born in 1956. I remember the goat man well. Before my mom and dad's house burnt we had pictures of us as kids with the goat man.

I’m from Northeastern Ga. I remember the Goat Man coming to town a couple times when I was a young boy and heard stories about him from my parents and grandparents. He and his goats and wagon were celebrities back then. Shameful how he was treated in his later years. What a life he lived.
Awesome story! Only God knows how many people may have been saved by the "Goat Man" shining the light to those he met. We all fall short of the Glory of God, but he certainly seemed to have given it his best shot regarding Jesus' great commission... Mark 16:15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” ... and if anyone is interested in reading the greatest historical account of all times, read or listen to The Gospel of John. Thank you, Appalachian Storyteller, for bringing to us this wonderful account of the "Goat Man"!
You got a good point there, Dave thank you so much for pointing that out. Sometimes we just plant seeds and we can’t see what’s going on underneath the soil.
Amen! Here's a quick story... Many years ago a man had recently came to his faith in Jesus. Filled with the Joy of the Lord, he gathered together his savings and rented out a local movie theater for a week or two to play "Chariots of Fire" for free to anyone who wanted to watch the movie. At the end of the film, he would call up anyone to the front of the theater who wanted to be saved. To his dismay, no one took the offer. But one man, who was on the fence, did wind up coming to the Lord shortly thereafter. That man wound up planting a Church and several sister Churches were raised to life from his Church. Many years later that man was at a Christian conference as he heard one of the speakers tell his story of renting the movie theater and how in spite of his efforts, no one came to be saved. Needless to say, the man who planted the Church shared his testimony with him. That story always raises goose pimples, just as it is for me as I'm typing this.
My Mom and Aunt saw him in Black Mountain, NC when they were young. They had no idea where he came from. They also remarked on the smell that accompanied him and his goats.
I've been very blessed to have seen Goat Man several times over the years, while traveling as a kid!!! We would drive from Mass to Nashville visiting family. Goat Man, did hold up the Traffic!!!! How Fortunate can one be?!! I'm so happy Goat Man and his Goats are embedded in my memories!!! Goat Man ❤✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️!!! 12-goats ❤️ Goat Man!! Great story! Thank you, greatly appreciated!!!
As a child growing up in rural South Carolina, I had the pleasure of seeing the goat man twice. My mother took us to town to see him as he came through town. Many people would never believe this story, but I saw him twice.
I Saw The goat man when i was a Child and have vivid memorias of The sight and smell as a 73 year old.i purchased a post card and think i Will go look for it now
As always a great story and well told. I met Goat Man when I was 10 outside Honea Path, SC. He was resting and allowed folks to pet goats and visit. I was somewhat scared of him but now I certainly respect him. He was evidently persecuted for no reason other than a simple ‘different’ life than most and preaching Jesus. A great memory and thank you again for the story.
The Goat man blessed our town of LaGrange Ga 2 times that I know of. We would hear sometimes a day ahead of time he and his goats were on the way. He stoped at the Ice House one time I got to see him in all his glory. You could hear coming a little ways away with all the bells on the goats. I can still hear it and I’m 75 😎✌️
My husband, Alan Mason, saw The Goat Man in Ettowah, Tennessee around 1961-1962, somewhere in there. The first thing Alan told me when the episode started was that The Goat Man smelled really bad, lolol! My husband was around 9-10 years old. We just watched the episode. Thank you for the memories it brought my husband!
I was born in 1958 in Franklin Ky. I remember the Goat man coming through our town . He would park his wagon in a open field in front of our local stock yard. I was in total amazement of his life and character.
I grew up in the little town of Hoboken, Ga and had the privilege of seeing the Goat Man on two or three occasions. He would spend the night at the cross roads of US 121 and 82 close to our house. Us kids were fascinated with him, his wagon and train of goats.
Thank you again for the story of an amazing American icon. It is one of the most colorful people forgotten by the passage of time but remembered in your colorful way of telling the true story. Thank you for your hard work 🙏🙏
Wow! I remember the Goatman; I'm 65 now and grew up in Roswell and Alpharetta Georgia; I'm here in Dahlonega now and remember him coming to Roswell when we were young, not sure if he just by chance was there the same time that the Barnum & Bailey Circus came to town, (hwy19 and Holcomb Bridge corner when there was just a field there!) there were elephants, giraffes and clowns... as a kid I remember oh so well! Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end!! I do so appreciate this video, brings back such great childhood memories! Thanks a whole heap Appalachia story teller!!!
He came to Mercer Universiy in Macon, Ga. for a few days in the mid 1970's and sat for myself and several other Art Students to paint portraits of him.
I remember the goat man. We were on our way to Knoxville on highway 411. He was stopped on our side of the road. We all yelled out for Mama to stop so we could see the goats and she did. I remember he was a very pleasant pleasant person and let us pet his goats. I don't remember how old I was but not very. My brother, sister and I were in seventh heaven. I'm 73 now and He's still one of my favorite memories. Thank You! I've always wondered how he came to be The Goat Man! Great Story!
When I was a young girl my parents and I would travel from Florida up to New York State every summer when I was out of school. We went to New York to see my many relatives. My family was originally from New York State. When I was about 8 years old, my 17 year old sister and I moved with my parents to South Florida in the mid 1950’s. When traveling the roads between Florida and New York State during the summer it was ALWAYS a FUN day when we would get to see the goat man! The Goat Man made us smile, along with many other smiling people. I can remember seeing the Goat Man at least three times. Happy memories.😁
Oh wow. I remember that when the Goatman came through our area it was always a big deal and folks would line up to catch a glimpse. The little local paper would always do a write up and his picture would be on the front page. Memories from long ago that had gotten lost in all the noise and confusion of modern life. The man was a genuine character and that's something this country is sorely missing these days.
Saw the goat man in sneads fl when I was a small boy along with all my brothers and sisters. The intire community turned out to see him and his goats. It was quite a scene. Will never forget it.
I remember when was I was either a in my late teens or my very early twenties the Goatman ride though this town and camped out. He was a site to behold with all those goats. Thank you sir sharing this story with me. It really bought back great memories to me. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR WHOLE FAMILY SIR...🙏🙏🙏
I can sincerely say, never heard of him I regret not ever seeing or meeting this unique Christian individual. God bless his heart ! .. May he forever rest in peace with the Lord ❤❤❤ thank you for sharing
Was lucky enough to visit and talk with THIS ICON in the late '50's, in Athens, Ga. on Prince Avenue. One of the most likeable, decent human beings, with no "agenda". So honored to have known.
Yes I remember the Goatman! Growing up in South Georgia I saw him twice I can remember. Running to meet him and then following along until mama called us back!
I remember The Goat Man when he came to our town on several occasions . We would visit him and here his sermon. The place was Thomaston Ga. He would set up camp at Kersey's Eggs. That is a childhood memory I will never forget. Thank you for including him in this documentary.
What a fantastic story! About an extraordinary man! Thank you so much for sharing this tale. Parts of it occurred in my lifetime, yet I don't recall ever having heard about him.
My Daddy took the family to see him when he was in Elbert County in Georgia in the 60's. I thought it was neat to be in a wagon pulled by goats. There was an abandoned house on side of road and he stayed there a couple of days with his goats. He was a sight to see and listen to
Every summer Goat Man came by our house and camped by the Tennessee River which was approximately a mile from our house. He usually stayed a week or more. Sometimes he would buy eggs or vegetables from my parents.
What a great memory. My dad ran a gas station in Danville Ga. from 1958 - 1960 and I remember he coming by the station. I was only 6 but I remember it well. Thanks for the story. Had no idea he traveled that far.
Since I moved to Barnesville GA, I have been asked many times if I ever saw the Goat Man. Being from up north originally, I never had the pleasure. Thank you for the story. Now I know why so many older folks smile when talking about him and how he came through Barnesville too.
This just unlocked a long forgotten memory , i remember seeing a story of this man in a book series called weird U.S and its been nany years but im glad to see this again i will not forget the Goat man again
Thank you so much. I’m glad you enjoyed this character. Colorful story. I hope you have a blessed day. It’s beautiful here in East Tennessee. Going to try to get out and enjoy it.
♥️♥️♥️♥️ I remember being very young and hearing that the goat man was coming nearby. I cant remember seeing him but I do remember the stories of him from back then.
Met him as a kid and again as an adult in North Georgia. Remember that as a kid his left arm was all deformed and as an adult I asked him what happened. He never came out and said what it was but told me it happened when he was about 25 years old. Great straight forward talker and true believer in God.
Born in the North GA hills in 1955, I saw the Goat Man many times. Word would spread weeks before his arrival and everyone would make plans to go see this oddity. I'm glad I got to see him.
This brings back memories of the Goat Man coming through our small town in western N.C. as a young boy in the late ‘50s. We had Vacation Bible School in June and we would go out to see him along with a crowd already gathered along Main St./US Hwy.64/70 to see him with his little wagon and goats. What an amazing and colorful character traveling the U.S. for 6 decades.
My husband is in his 60s, and growing up would often visit his relatives in Georgia. He's mentioned the goat man to me several times in the years we've been married. We just watched your wonderful video, and he says he probably saw him 10 or 12 times in the 60s and 70s going down the side of the 2 lane roads in Georgia between Folkston and Waycross. It's a real shame that because of some people's meanness he had to quit doing what he loved! We subscribed!
My great grandfather Homer Walls, and his son my grandfather Howard Walls, both of Commerce GA. told me of this man when I was just a lad of 12. I'm 68 now but I remember the stories. My grandparents, the Walls clan were Holiness Pentecostal Christians and the majority of their social lives were through the Church with fellow church members and family. They often spoke of this 'Goat Man' coming through and preaching the gospel. As nothing much exciting ever happened around these parts and radio was a new thing his team of goats stood out in contrast to horses, mules, or automobiles. They spoke as if they had been recent occurrences and I was always enthralled to listen to their stories.
Saw the Goat Man several times in my childhood, JD. He spent the night a few times along Highway 41A in Pleasant View, TN. Fond memories of days long past! Thanks for sharing, brother, and G-d bless!
Growing up in Macon GA, I got to see the Goat Man twice during the 50's & 60's, once in Macon, and another time in Dublin GA. He was truly a unique character with his jingling old wagon and herd of goats.
I remember him in a small town in nc on 301 I remember some of the 🐐 goats hoofs some were in bad shape from pulling the wagon on the roar I enjoy seeing him I remember him being nice sometimes in the fifties you could smell the goats that’s all people talked about for a long time the goat man
I grew up in Wolf Creek, TN and it was like the carnival coming to town whenever Ches McCartney, the goat man, stopped at the corner of hwy 27 and 68. When you came down the hill and saw his wagon and herd of goats you just couldn’t stop smiling. It was a wonderful childhood memory. Thanks for a great video.
Oh how I remember seeing the goat man in Columbus, GA, as a young boy.... I'm guessing in the early 60's. I wanted to stop and pet the goats, but mama said that they were too nasty. What a spectacle! Thanks for bringing this memory back for me.
My grandparents lived along Highway 41 in Georgia. I saw the Goat Man several times. We could hear him coming, the clank of bells & his wheels on pavement. We would run to the highway to wave as he went by. It was a great treat for us children to see him pass by.
I'm glad to see your story about the goat man When I was young saw him between chatt and Cleveland tn Then later in a cloverleaf in DC still have photo of him with bible
I heard of the goat man when I was a kid. I had no idea he lived in my hometown (Macon, GA). I had assumed, having heard this from my relatives only, that he was another Appalachian fellow with no geographic connection to my own life. Having died in ‘98 he was still living in Macon long after my family had told me about him. I was a teenager when he died. That crazy!
My Dad was born in '55 and still talks about seeing the Goat Man when he was a kid growing up in Blount County, AL. I wish I could've been there. God Bless America 🙏🇺🇲
I lived in Decatur and I never heard of this man until I moved to Etowah County , there were people who talked about him coming through here . I always thought it was a big fish story , guess not .
I remember the Goat Man coming through Rome, GA sometime in the early 60's. I don't know if he preached or not but he was camped on the side of the highway and we stopped and talked to him.
I remember him well. We’d occasionally pass him as we drove through rural Georgia. Even though it was only for a few seconds, we were delighted to see him, his laden cart, and his team of goats. Thanks for the memory.
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller hasn't changed much . Neither has Turtletown, where I'm from. Love Coker Creek and Tellico. Moved to North Georgia in early Nineties to manage a farm. Too much traffic and building of rental cabins here, but my husband's farm is home now. Don't want to move again. Besides we'd be like Jed Clampett, moving all our livestock 😂
Thank you, Carol. Where are you located? I can tell you if he was over there. I know he went to all 49 states except for Hawaii, but I literally clipped hundreds of newspaper articles from small towns talking about him.
I saw the goat man in the sixties when I was about ten years old, he was in Jefferson county close to Wrens Ga. It was astonishing to see all his goats and how they pulled his wagon.
I live in Georgia don't remember the man but I've heard of him my dad and mom talked about him as i was growing up i would have loved to meet him brave man keep the stories coming God bless you
Thanks for sharing this wonderful story and re-igniting the fading embers of my childhood memories of once visiting the Goatman at his campsite in the mid 1960s and seeing him traveling down the edge of the hwy. on several other occasions. I had not thought of these times in an untold number of years. ❤
I would Love to buy your Book. But at the age or 65 wild a lot of issues with my health I may not be able to read it . If I was able it would never be as Good as your voice when you tell it. Put out an audio book of your stories. God Bless Tim S.
I remember hearing he went through town on 25W north, pretty sure it was in the mid-60's...sadly, I missed seeing him.. Happy to know he had a long and meaningful life...sad to know how cruel people can be. Wonderful testament to a free spirit on a mission! Thanks JD 😎👍
ABSOLUTELY i do remember him and the goats coming through our town in south Alabama. He stayed a few days at the road side park, "today they're called a rest area". If I remember correctly he had some people with him traveling in a car. He did draw a crowd but i never saw preaching going on . 🐐
The Goat Man was a little before my time but I remember hearing the old timers talk about him coming through north Alabama back in the day. I was just a kid when he retired from the road but you still hear people mention him occasionally even now. Fascinating guy!
He had more excitement in his life than i ever thought of. However the thought of traveling by goats across the country doesn't sound like something id enjoy. 😂😂 Great job JD
Saw him twice as a youngster in the 1950s once on hiway 90 in Crestview Florida and years later I the early 1960s going through Sneads Florida on the same hiway. Quite the character indeed.
Goat man would preach quite often....he had a clanging old wagon. My family is from Cade's Cove, TN....John Oliver was my grandfather's great great grandfather....😊

Thanks for sharing this memory ❤️
Such a sweet story. Never did meet him but my life would have been richer if I had. Rip sweet man.
I wish I could have interviewed him
Saw the goat man in sneads fl when I was a small boy along with all my brothers and sisters. The intire community turned out to see him and his goats. It was quite a scene. Will never forget it.
thank you for sharing this!

Well, said Faye
Was lucky enough to visit and talk with THIS ICON in the late '50's, in Athens, Ga. on Prince Avenue. One of the most likeable, decent human beings, with no "agenda". So honored to have known.
Thank you for sharing this
Yes I remember the Goatman!
Thank you for including him in this documentary.
thanks for sharing this!
What a fantastic story! About an extraordinary man! Thank you so much for sharing this tale. Parts of it occurred in my lifetime, yet I don't recall ever having heard about him.
Thank you so much. I’m glad you enjoyed this. He was a colorful character to say the least who lived in extraordinary life.
My Daddy took the family to see him when he was in Elbert County in Georgia in the 60's. I thought it was neat to be in a wagon pulled by goats. There was an abandoned house on side of road and he stayed there a couple of days with his goats. He was a sight to see and listen to
Thank you so much for sharing that Donna. I love the way he just made do no matter where he was.
@@TheAppalachianStorytellerhave you found any of his Post Cards???
Yep, came through Winder, Ga. many times. It was an event.
Thanks for sharing that Ben have a great day, brother
Every summer Goat Man came by our house and camped by the Tennessee River which was approximately a mile from our house. He usually stayed a week or more. Sometimes he would buy eggs or vegetables from my parents.
that's awesome!
Thank you so much for sharing that my friend. Hope you have a blessed day.
This is real history! Thank you so much for telling!
Need these stories in our schools, like so many of your stories.❤️

Thanks for the memory. Saw him several times on Hwy 80 near Pembroke Ga.
Very adventurous life to have lived,, spreading a good message.
Great straight forward talker and true believer in God.
wow, thanks for sharing those memories
Born in the North GA hills in 1955, I saw the Goat Man many times. Word would spread weeks before his arrival and everyone would make plans to go see this oddity. I'm glad I got to see him.
Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks for sharing those memories. I enjoyed reading them.
Thanks for sharing this memory
Saw the Goat Man several times in my childhood, JD. He spent the night a few times along Highway 41A in Pleasant View, TN. Fond memories of days long past! Thanks for sharing, brother, and G-d bless!
Thanks for sharing that brother it sure is amazing how far he traveled with some goats and a rickety wagon
We appreciate all your great stories.thank u sir.
So nice of you
Growing up in Macon GA, I got to see the Goat Man twice during the 50's & 60's, once in Macon, and another time in Dublin GA. He was truly a unique character with his jingling old wagon and herd of goats.
I remember him in a small town in nc on 301 I remember some of the 🐐 goats hoofs some were in bad shape from pulling the wagon on the roar I enjoy seeing him I remember him being nice sometimes in the fifties you could smell the goats that’s all people talked about for a long time the goat man
wow! Thank you for sharing these memories!
Thank you for telling this true story!!!!!
Thank you!
My hometown in georgia they still talk about when the goat man came through town
How bow that! Thanks for sharing
Thanks so much Luther!
What a delightful story! One of your best.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing that memory
I'm glad to see your story about the goat man
When I was young saw him between chatt and Cleveland tn
Then later in a cloverleaf in DC still have photo of him with bible
thanks for sharing this memory
Born in Dalton GA. I remember seeing the goat man as a child in Ringgold GA. Thank you for sharing his story. I never knew all this about his life.
Thanks so much for sharing that memory! ❤️
That crazy!
History is all around us ❤️
My Dad was born in '55 and still talks about seeing the Goat Man when he was a kid growing up in Blount County, AL. I wish I could've been there.
God Bless America 🙏🇺🇲
Thanks so much for sharing that Mr. Rogers
I lived in Decatur and I never heard of this man until I moved to Etowah County , there were people who talked about him coming through here . I always thought it was a big fish story , guess not .
What a man. God Bless him and I'm sure he was. Hero.
Amen
I remember the Goat Man coming through Rome, GA sometime in the early 60's. I don't know if he preached or not but he was camped on the side of the highway and we stopped and talked to him.
Thanks for sharing this Larry

This is a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing . Keep up the excellent work. God bless you and yours.
Thank you, nora and thank you so much for commenting. I always look forward to your comments. Have a blessed day, my friend.
I remember him well. We’d occasionally pass him as we drove through rural Georgia. Even though it was only for a few seconds, we were delighted to see him, his laden cart, and his team of goats. Thanks for the memory.
We Always enjoyed seeing him come thru Ducktown TN 💕
I’ve got to get to Ducktown Tennessee someday
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller hasn't changed much . Neither has Turtletown, where I'm from. Love Coker Creek and Tellico. Moved to North Georgia in early Nineties to manage a farm. Too much traffic and building of rental cabins here, but my husband's farm is home now. Don't want to move again. Besides we'd be like Jed Clampett, moving all our livestock 😂
I lived close to the goat man in wilkinson county Georgia when I was a child. He was a very nice man .I loved seeing his goats
Thanks for sharing this!
Oh, JD! That was marvelous!! I wonder if the Goat Man ever came out this way? I loved the photos!
Thank you, Carol. Where are you located? I can tell you if he was over there. I know he went to all 49 states except for Hawaii, but I literally clipped hundreds of newspaper articles from small towns talking about him.
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller I’m in Carthage TN

Growing up in Cleveland Tennessee, I remember when the Goat Man would come through town. He could certainly draw a crowd.
I saw the goat man in the sixties when I was about ten years old, he was in Jefferson county close to Wrens Ga. It was astonishing to see all his goats and how they pulled his wagon.
Thank you so much for sharing this. He really got around.
❤❤❤❤ you have a true gift at storytelling.

Wow, super story. Thanks so much for your work ❤
Thank you 😊 really appreciate you ❤️
Thanks for sharing this wonderful story and re-igniting the fading embers of my childhood memories of once visiting the Goatman at his campsite in the mid 1960s and seeing him traveling down the edge of the hwy. on several other occasions. I had not thought of these times in an untold number of years. ❤
Thank you for sharing your memories
I would Love to buy your Book. But at the age or 65 wild a lot of issues with my health I may not be able to read it . If I was able it would never be as Good as your voice when you tell it. Put out an audio book of your stories. God Bless Tim S.

Great story my friend.
Thank you so much. I hope you’re having a great week and looking forward to a great weekend.
Thank you Kathy ❤️
ABSOLUTELY i do remember him and the goats coming through our town in south Alabama. He stayed a few days at the road side park, "today they're called a rest area". If I remember correctly he had some people with him traveling in a car. He did draw a crowd but i never saw preaching going on . 🐐
Thanks for sharing that, south Alabama, wow!
The Goat Man was a little before my time but I remember hearing the old timers talk about him coming through north Alabama back in the day. I was just a kid when he retired from the road but you still hear people mention him occasionally even now. Fascinating guy!
Wow, thank you so much for sharing that amazing memories
People can be so hateful. Why would they try to kill a man or an animal? Breaks my heart 😢
Andie, this is the probable explanation... John 15:18-25
A human being because of sin ,an animal to survive
I remember him coming through Dallas Ga back in the 70s. We would hear that he was coming. Us kids would wait for him.
He had more excitement in his life than i ever thought of. However the thought of traveling by goats across the country doesn't sound like something id enjoy. 😂😂 Great job JD
Agreed Rusty. I couldn't have done it, but im amazed he did for nearly a half century. Simply incredible!
Saw him twice as a youngster in the 1950s once on hiway 90 in Crestview Florida and years later I the early 1960s going through Sneads Florida on the same hiway. Quite the character indeed.
In Florida! Wow!
Goat man would preach quite often....he had a clanging old wagon. My family is from Cade's Cove, TN....John Oliver was my grandfather's great great grandfather....😊
Wow, that’s some legendary history in your family
I know some Ogles in that area.😊
