Hi friends! Today I'm sharing my tips for how to do straight line quilting on a quilt. I'll be showing you how to what supplies you need as well as some of my helpful tips for marking your designs and trying something new! I hope this helps you out! So let’s get started!

I have been a quilter for 20 years and most of my projects are straight stitched because I prefer that look. Much of what you've shown were hard won lessons for me as no one seems to address this subject. Your projects are beautiful and so precise looking. I will say that putting a queen size quilt through the throat of a standard sewing machine means that one cannot just flip the project around and carry on in a new direction as one would with a tiny demo project. Adjustments and concessions for bulk must be considered. And I still wish I had an alarm on my machine to tell me when I'm about to run out of bobbin thread instead of discovering it miles of zero stitching later! The reward for having achieved a finished straight stitch quilt is gratifying and also a little character - building. Thank you for the video.
Hi Erika Thanks for the info You mentioned about the lines if the frixon pen coming bac in the cold About 3 years ago I took a class and the instructor gave us a tip that if we spray the fabric with Best Press FIRST then press it dry then put the lines on then when we are ready press the lines off the line WONT reappear in the cold She is RIGHT!!!!! Try it!!!!!!

You did a really nice job of introducing people to straight line quilting! I found it especially helpful for someone who may not have the budget to buy some of the numerous popular tools used in free motion quilting or the more advanced skill to do that kind. Straight line quilting can be beautiful in itself and very rewarding as well.
My older machines don't have the serpentine stitch (wavy line) but one machine has a tricot stitch. It's a multi stitch form of zigzag. I use that a lot on kid quilts. You use a walking foot and change the stitch length to 3 or 3.5, and width to 5 or 5.5. Thanks for the video making everything so clear.
I just did a king size quilt with a walking foot n a s design from my quilt designs. I love how it looked and it was easier than I thought. The quilts heavy but very doable. Thank you so much for the video and ideas. I also had the metal bar tool I never knew what it was for.
I searched for a half an hour on youtube to find a video where someone showed that wavy or decorative stich for straight line quilting. Im pretty confident in saying that you are the only one who posted a video like this. It seem like people either post a stitch-in-the-ditch video or free motion, and nothing in between. So, thank you for showing that so clearly and comprehensively.

Thank you Erica, for a beautiful, clear video. I have been afraid to do any quilting on my tops, since I thought that I would screw up all my hard work on putting it together. Was sending everything to my local long-arm quilt finisher, but she is now taking months and months to finish my tops -- very frustrating. Finished is better than perfect. People love the dorky homemade look. Besides, if you don't like the outcome, you can always use a seam ripper.

Also, instead of using a marking pen you can use painters tape, which also comes in different widths!

Great video, thanks Erica. And good that you made the point to warn quilters about marking with Frixion pens... after washing, those chemical lines are *permanent*, so best not to use them on quilts. It's ok for marking the centre lines on squares for HST's, since those are the cutting lines, but not for marking the front of any sewn piece. The "bone folder" you mention is usually called a "Hera marker" for quilting, fyi.
Right, in sewing it was always called a herra marker. But card making became popular and makers call it a bone folder used to flatten or burnish the fold of the card they cut from card stock.
This would have been nice to have when I made my first Faux Chennelle quilt. Can't wait to have it for my next one.

Any suggestions on how to keep the metal guide from moving around while you are quilting? Mine kept getting knocked and then I didn't know how to line it back up. Also, thanks for showing us the "start in the middle" part. I've never seen anyone bring the bottom thread up through the quilt like that. Helpful to know!

Hello! I wanted to share with you that I have tested the frixion markers a couple times and they do seem to come out in the wash and then they don't reappear. I marked on a couple different fabrics some of them I erased with an iron first and some I did not and then I washed, dried and put them in the freezer and no ink reappeared!
Okay, good to know, I've heard if you iron them off, then wash the quilt they don't come back. Thanks for sharing!

Using a Frixion pen is great, lines will stay away forever after you wash the quilt!!

Thank you very much for your tips about tension issues. I bought a Brother Straight stitching sewing machine. PQ1500S on the 24th December and I am having problems with deciding witch of the top or bottom tension (bobine) I have to adjust. I am getting to see the bobine aqua thread just a little point on my top beige quilt and I don’t understand how to work with all the adjustments and I did go on the site of the company after checking out my book, but the explanations are not user friendly because they should be giving there customers examples of the situation along with the solution for that particular issue. Your explanations were much clearer so I will try them out tomorrow and I shall use my walking foot also because the batting is thick plus the 2 layers of cotton fabric. Very useful, especially the S curve. However you used the plate for stitching up to 9mm width stitches when straight stitching I would normally change this for a 'straight stitch plate' which has a few holes, as the stitches are better controlled and look more straight.

I know regular ink comes out with isopropyl alcohol. Perhaps try to see if the frixion pen ink will come out with the rubbing alcohol and you can get it off of your tractor if it bugs you lol.

I bought a foot from Amazon called Distinctive Border Guide, it has a wide plastic guide plate marked in red and marked on both sides of the needle that works great as a guide. Check it out.

If you want to put it in a show never ever back stitch. Leave the thread out and bury it in the fluff after!
Tineke Williams I’a newbie.. just want to know you shouldn’t back stitch when entering in a show?
When I straight line quilt a bed quilt, if I have to leave the quilt for any length of time i'll put a pin in as a reminder to start stitching in the other direction when I return.
I use my blow dryer on high and that works great.

I used friction pens on a green fabric. I tested it first and it worked fine. But I found that if I left the marks on there for a week or so, they did leave white marks. I guess you have to get them out quickly.
Good to know, I usually iron them off right when I'm done, so maybe that's why I haven't seen any white marks on my fabric. I've also been told if you wash it after ironing the marks off, the lines will not reappear.

When using the quilting guide with the walking foot quilting straight line how do you turn your work to sew the other way? There’s nothing for that guide foot to run along when you turn the piece?

I would try and re-iron the markings if you used a Frixion pen and if they go away, stick it in the wash. I've also been told that will get rid of the marks for good! :)

I’ve started “thinking” of doing a mini quilt. Starting off with placemats actually. I noticed you don’t have to hold on to your threads when you start off. If I don’t hold on to mine, I get the proverbial “nest egg” underneath and my material gets gobbled up. Is this a function of your machine that going thread doesn’t get eaten up?
No, I used to have to do that on my grandma's old machine. But I don't have to hold them on my Juki :)

Be sure and check in the stuff you've put away since you bought your machine because a lot of machines come with a walking foot.

If you are starting your straight line at the edge of the quilt sandwich, do you need to secure it in any way, like a back stitch?
No, I don't backstitch at the edges, but you can if you want to. I don't because it will get secured when you add binding.

When you make your practice sandwich do you also put fabric on the back side... So three layers? Or do you just do top fabric and batting? If only two layers, will your tension be different when you add the third layer for your real quilt?
I would probably do the backing/batting/top for the practice sandwich just so you can get your tension right.

I'm ready to do a cross hatch straight line quilt on my quilt project. What is a good distance to use for the diagonal lines on a 55x67 quilt. 3 inches ? or more ? or less? I will use the guide on my walking foot to help.
Hi, I think it's totally personal preference to what you think looks better. I tend to do larger quilting, so maybe 3" apart, but I know others who prefer tighter quilting like 1" apart or even less! Totally up to you :)
Do you backstitch at the end of a row or pull up bobbin thread and tie off or what?
If I run off onto the edge of the top I don't back-stitch at all. Those stitches will get sealed off when you bind it. But if I'm stopping/starting inside of the quilt top then yes, I back-stitch just a bit.

If you wash the quilt after using the friction pen will that remove the marks you put on the quilt? Or will it always be there. Great videos. Thanks !
You'll want to use heat to remove the pen marks first, then wash and they should be gone permanently. If you don't wash the quilt and it gets cold again, they will re-appear.
I'm not sure if you'll see this because my comment is coming so far from the date of this video, ... (1) thank you for these amazing tutorials!! (2) I am confused on the pattern that you did on the practice (white) quilt. if you have # of lines horizontally, will you have the same # of lines vertically? (sorry, this whole thing is confusing to me). I think you implied to another comment that it's your own design and there isn't a set pattern but I just wanted to make sure I understood that right. How many are needed then to secure the quilt? (Does my comment scream BEGINNER?" lol)

Hi! So for the sample I was just showing you how to do straight lines. If I'm doing that on a full quilt, I'll just follow my seam lines usually to make straight lines. I wouldn't worry about having the same amount of vertical/horizontal lines so much as I would focus on making them the same distances apart if that makes sense. And I tend to prefer diagonal lines to vertical/horizontal as well. It really just depends on the quilt :) As far as how many lines are needed, you'll usually follow the instructions on your batting. Most batting I use recommends quilting lines every 5" apart at a minimum.

Hi Erica, can I use a walking foot on a 1978 Kenmore ?This sewing machines as given to me by my grandma back in 2003 and I’m just now using it to make my first queen size quilt. The top is done. I went to a quilt shop to pick up the batik fabric and the lady helping me said that I should just have someone else quilt it. After watching your videos and finishing a ragtime baby and now this I really want to do it myself. If the walking foot isn’t an option for me, should I invest in a new machine? (This one is really old but wow it is still kickin!)
My friend has a late-70s Montgomery Ward machine and a walking foot works fine.

When starting your lines: is best to start it towards the middle of the quilt? or is it better to start at the edge and work your lines vertically towards the middle and the other end?
I usually start towards the middle and push out towards the edges. Otherwise you'll end up pushing fabric towards the center and there won't be anywhere for it to smooth out so you'll get a bunched up section.

friction pens can also leave white marks on some fabrics. always test the fabric first.
I second this. I thought Frixion pens were THE ONE when it came to marking fabric until I ran it across some red fabric. As soon as I ironed it, it left white tell-tale marks, almost like a bleaching effect. Sadly, this was on a nearly-finished piece, so I had to work around the marks. The same thing has occurred on every solid color fabric I've tested, and even appears on some white fabrics. DEFINITELY TEST FIRST.
By the way, I read recently that the white marks that are left behind are actually the gel part of the ink, and that it can be washed off. I have not tested this, but just wanted to throw that out there.

hi Erica! I recently bought a Singer heavy duty 4452 sewing machine. It came with a walking foot along with a normal presser foot but I dont see a place where I can install the guide that you walked about in the video, does not every sewing machine have a place where you can use a guide?
I believe most do, I would look online to see if you can find any info on how to put it on that specific machine. You might also look in your owner's manual.

No it's sitting on top of my dining room table. Then I have a Sew Steady acrylic table expansion on it that I ordered from Amazon.
I have a general sewing question- my machine was making beautiful stitches, then yesterday I was trying to teach my sister and cousin how to see on my Juki and now it will only do too tiny stitches even though the stitch length setting hasn’t changed. What can I do?!?!
I would check to make sure your feed dogs are up, and that your foot pressure is on. Also make sure to adjust your stitch length knob.
Erica Arndt thanks.... my feed dogs are up and my stitch length is the same but I will try putting the presser foot pressure back on. I had put it up since I’m quilting now, and I do this sometimes but I’ll give it a shot.
