      Most definitely. Every time I see someone on Reddit ask anything about airbrushing I recommend Marco's videos. Ive seen so many others, but none of them really helped. I started using mixing cups to thin my paints and a little drying retarder. I havent had a clog since

      @@lucasthomas9184 same, and also when ever any one asks about using oils (though for the life of me I can't get the hang of highlighting with oils, I've found oil washes pretty awesome). Marco's airbrushing advise has also helped me reduce clogs (I still get the occasional one, but far fewer than when i started out with in a few months ago)

    Everything boils down to your astounding grasp of color and all those concepts, once you have that I bet you can achieve the same results with cheap craft paints and a ratty sponge. To the rest of us that don't have said grasp, it kinda feels like magic, even as we see it happen with explanations.

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  3 роки тому +1

      Well, that's a huge generalisation based only on your experience. There are many intermediate and advanced painters that don't consider this magic, but just a new idea to try. Plus even if you are a beginner and you can't use this now it's still a bunch of new knowledge able to enrich your understanding of painting and in the worst case scenario, something inspiring to aspire to...

    I've been painting like this for a while. These days I use vallejo washes and then go over that with Pro-acryl transparents. Now the pro-acryl transparent line has a white and black you can mix so many colours. I love how the colour of the wash really impacts the way the transparent layers look on top of it. I do also give a highlight drybrush to help give that pop through the transparent layers. Then highlight these after.
    Great to see someone highlighting this kind of work!

    This is basically my routine with one key difference. I undershade it as you did and then I use CPs and Inks to color it. But because I am usually in a hurry and I am mostly speed painting board game minis, after the all the base coloring is done I do not highlight them as you did. Instead I lightly drybrush it again with white, just going for the highest spots and then I lightly re-apply the CPs and Inks, perhaps I bit more diluted, just to recolor those top highlights. It wont look as fantastic as yours, but it is great compromise if you want fast!

      Thanks a million!!! Oh yeah inks can easily behave like Contrast or premade washes with the right balance of medium and water; it's difficult to give a precise recipe because every colour reacts a bit differently but the ingredients are always the same

    Excellent video! Of the limited number of products i've tried contrasts are more enjoyable than most. Have a better chance of developing my skills using them than traditional paint. Ordered some Montana aluminum primer to try on pewter hoping it will be tougher than what i've been using. Which cap would you recommend for priming a mini?

    It seems to be a great technic ! I'm definitely gonna try it for my next Blood Bowl team. Just wondering if this warm shade would also fit a turquoise lizard mini ? I like the fact that it could make the lizard warmer but I wonder if it would work on a predominantly cold color min or if I'm "forced" to go with a colder shade (blue or green) in this case.

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  2 роки тому

      In this case I would start with a warm tone more compatible with an evolution into saturated blue and turquoise like magenta or a warm violet!

    Awesome content as always. When you airbrush do you use a ventilation system in your studio? Thanks!

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  3 роки тому

      Thanks man!!! No, I don't have a ventilation system; I work only on single models/small skirmish warbands with a very precise spray and in a large room with a big window next to the table! But I have a good respirator for heavy priming. It depends mostly on your set-up and how you use the airbrush, but if you feel the slightest need of a ventilation system grab one with thinking twice 😉

      @@MarcoFrisoniNJM Thank you for the info, it is greatly appreciated. I was debating if I should move my airbrush set up from my garage to my studio. I do all of my priming etc there especially for terrain creation. But for mini painting it makes more sense to be in my studio. Thanks again! On another note as a traditionally trained artist, I love to see oil paints being used in miniature painting and you do a great job of explaining the reasons why they can be such a great medium for this application.

    Hey Marco! What are the advantages of heavy body acrylics over oils when you're doing highlights? I've seen you use both but they seem to give the same result.

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  3 роки тому +1

      Hi! It's more a matter of personal preference for a specific workflow because in terms of results there's no real difference between the two! Oils give you extremely easy blendings and acrylics deliver slightly more saturated tones but when you know their properties you can easily play with their strength and work around their weaknesses to arrive to the same point

    Is this process can be achieved even without contrast? Can I use acrylic super diluted color instead of constrast?

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  3 роки тому +1

      Sure, it just takes a bit more time to create the same kind of opacity Check this old video where I use a similar idea: ua-cam.com/video/e_HiDJ-4eqQ/v-deo.html

      Yep, Contrast paints are simply diluted inks 😉! A bit of water, medium and maybe some flow improver into inks and you get the same behaviour

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  3 роки тому +1

      For oil painting I use cheap odourless mineral/white spirit from the hardware store. The most common brand on the shelves here in Ireland is Bartoline (but it's always the same chemical and brand doesn't really matter!)
