Nice reaction! It took me some time to appreciate these types of harsh vocals, but I'm glad I did, there is so much that I would have missed otherwise. Also, this song was studied in Sydney Conservatorium of Music, as proposed by Professor Matthew Hindson. Here's what Professor Hindson commented about the subject: "I will be presenting 'And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope' to the composition students at the Conservatorium next semester as an exemplar in structure, mixing timbres, meters, modes, how to approach virtuosity, sound and noise, extended performance and techniques. The students will need to study 2 technical aspects of what Ne Obliviscaris have done in their music, and then use these techniques in their own classical music compositions. It is my pleasure to introduce such high quality music making to our students, alongside other music by composers including Beethoven, Gershwin, Steve Reich and Peter Sculthorpe. Musicians deserve to hear the music of Ne Obliviscaris, and the music of many other metal bands, in order to appreciate the compositional complexity that lies within it, no matter what their musical tastes." Other Ne Obliviscaris songs I'd suggest for future reactions: - Forget Not- As Icicles Fall - Painters of the Tempest (Part II): Triptych Lux - Devour Me, Colossus (Part I): Blackholes - Eyrie
There’s quite a few metal bands I could think of that would provide a good basis for lessons on technique and compositional complexity just off the top of my head: Necrophagist Obscura Death Opeth Tool Fallujah Beyond Creation
Good time to mention Opeth.....an influence on this band. It is because of Opeth ,that I can appreciate bands like Neo.... When listening to Opeth, think of opera.Their songs are narrative, and often gothic in subject matter .The growls serve as a voice for the dark elements of the song. The clean vocals are always beautiful. AND there is only one lead singer... doing both.
I compare all new metal bands suggested to Opeth when starting out honestly. Still Life, Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries are immortal albums (any piece from these albums would do -- The Moor, Benighted, The Drapery Falls and Baying of the Hounds are highlights of their career).
I'm glad you guys liked it as much as you did. I would say that with the growling vocals it's more of an expression of the subject matter, as well as a juxtaposition against the beautiful parts. Kind of a contrast.
Yes, I was thinking it is not a bad song/band to give the harsh vocal a chance. It's not just part of the genre, or a plain expressin of agression or noise. There's the clean to contrast with, maybe read the lyrics to better appriciate the dark and bright voices in the story. And there are more minutes instrumental than singing
Exactly! Metallica is not the be all end all of Metal music. Metal is produced in over 3 dozen countries on 5 continents. It comes in dozens of styles or sub genres that their is something for everybody if you're will to seek it out.
The song means that 'Only when faced with extreme circumstances do our true and raw emotions/ colours shine through. Every person is a work of art.' Im assuming thats why the contrast between the growls/ vocal fries and the clean vocals are needed there.
Keep an eye out, I am doing a reaction to this with Halflifesistah and her hubby Wolf in a couple of days time and will be uploaded in a couple of weeks when it is edited. I have a feeling they will both love it.
She had an eargasm @ 4:54 . Ne Obliviscaris is my favourite band from my home - Melbourne, Australia. So glad that you have react to them. You should check out Countless Skies by Be'lakor, also from Melbourne. Cheers!
This song is incredibly good. Every little part. Every instrument part is amazing. The vocals are complementing each other. Love them both. I've listen to harsh vocals since the 90s so I have no problems that.
When I first heard music with growling (Epica - they have soft vocals+growls), it didn't just disturb me, I was scared :P and it really was an acquired taste. Now I can even enjoy it. I found this band after a lot of practice in listening to growls ;) so I didn't have any problem with it. Now there are some specific forms of growls that I just hate.
Beautiful. Having a lead violinist in a metal band is just breathtaking and unique. Love this group and y'all's reaction is priceless. All of them are. And it's awesome that this appealed to Kel's classical sensibilities!!
Some other very good songs with a mixture of screams and clean vocals, that I think you would actually like: Amorphis: The bee Insomnium: While we sleep These are bands from Finland (like Nightwish)
2 excellent bands, doesn't matter where they're from; especially Amorphis. Been rocking them since early to mid 90's when I first heard Black Winter Day and thought that it was the coolest song I've ever heard; in spite of the growls which at the time I had not embraced.
If you check out the live version it may help you appreciate the vocals more. They are just awesome live and both singers are amazing. You will see more how talented he is.
Good reaction as always. This version is very good but the live performance from Colorado is freaking amazing. Give it a listen sometime and watch these guys actually play this live.
Congrats on your first 1000 subs! You guys deserve it! I’ve been leaving comments on other reaction channels telling people to come check you guys out so hopefully that helps you guys continue to grow subs.
I would like to humbly request Rebirth by Eluveitie. Like Ne Obliviscaris, they feature instruments not commonly found in metal bands; unlike Ne Obliviscaris, though, Eluveitie are Swiss folk metal, which means strong roots in European folk music. Their song Rebirth is one of their latest.
Between the buried and me - selkies. I dont know if you guys are ready for them yet, but i think is worth a try. One of the most influentials progressive metal bands of this generation
Love them. But that's death metal vocal overload for them. You'd have to start them on a song that utilizes the singing quite a bit more like Astral Body or The Coma Machine.
I agree harsh vocals are tough to like, I found them really difficult at the start, but have grown to appreciate them at times. I would be happier without them to be fair, but can enjoy them enough if the music is as excellent as the one you have listened to. I again have to recommend Insomnium - While we Sleep, an awesome song with harsh and clean vocals. It is a truly amazing song, it may just be the perfect song to hear harsh vocals and just forget about them as the music carries you away.
This was the first time listening to this band and I thought it awesome. The thing with extreme metal genres is that most people fixate on the growls and because of that miss out on the music so kudos to you for keeping an open mind. I was like you many years ago; I wasn't into Death Metal or Black Metal but my ex was and she told just to ignore the growls and shrieks and focus on the music. You guys are like me, into the old school melodic metal with soaring vocal harmonies where you can understand the lyrics. You can't do that with extreme metal. You're going to strain your brain if you try so just let it become part of the soundscape and embrace it as you would another guitar part. Probably the best musical advice anyone has ever given me and today I'm a better Metalhead for it. Oh, and yes, frequent repetition will help in your acclimation into extreme metal so keep on doin' whatcha doin'. My 2 cents anyways.
First time watching you guys and just subscribed. growling really is an acquired taste, and like others have said below, it helps reading along the lyrics with the songs until you get used to them. if you want to dive in to the style you have to check out bands that do it right and are great musically. My recommendations would be "In the shadow of our pale companion" by Agalloch for something epic and different, similar to the song in this reaction. "The Phantom Agony" by Epica since it mixes the classical instruments/vocals and metal (including small amounts of growling). "Insanity's crescendo" by Dark Tranquility that has clean vocals along with growling, but the singer/growler in that band has some of the cleanest growls out there that are fairly easy to understand. Then maybe some folk metal that mixes folk instruments with metal like in "Rebirth" by Eluveitie which is heavier and has more growls but still very good, worth giving a shot. Keep it up guys!
With screams, it REALLY helps to have the Lyrics pulled up. Then you can often actually pick out the screams and they can become more than just a guttural sound you hear it as now. Their songs get better with time. So unique. Also; could you please React to Ayreon: The day that the World Breaks down official video? thanx ;)
regarding the growls: it is an acquired taste, I think no one who started their journey into discovering rock, hard rock and metal just started out with cannibal corpse, I was appalled by it in the beginning too. Another good band to get into growls would be Khemmis, since they also have clear vocals, but a few growls here and there in between.
You should check out "The Piper Never Dies" by Edguy. Such an emotional and epic song. In the vein of Iron Maiden I'd say, but also their own at the same time. Classic power metal :)

The uninitiated usually find these vocals "evil". Sure some bands have those themes but others do not. Other bands speak on topics like politics, environment, religion, philosophy, the human condition and spirituality. I find this sub genre to be very creative and it's one of my favorite metal genres. For me this kind of vocals with music like this cathartic and beautiful. Beauty amidst chaos. Its like looking at a super nova. Its beautiful but it is very intense energy. Yet this kind of energy is both of destruction and creation. Kind of like the Hindu god Shiva Nataraja. Devour me, Colossus is another amazing song to listen to. I seen NeO live 3x and they never disappoint. They sound just like their albums. Doing vocals like this isn't easy at all and to learn sustainability and not injuring your vocal chords takes dedication. It not actually screaming, check out vocal coaches explaining how to do them. Hope you guys check out more of this great band!
I was hoping you guys would get around to this song. Personally I fell in love with the growly voice since the first time I heard it as a little kid but it takes most people awhile before they go from just tolerating it to actually enjoying it.
just look at the screams as another musical texture rather than a lyric as such and you can accept them much more readily! Then after a while you will find them no longer a problem in songs.
I highly recommend listening to some Opeth. If you are not ready for the growls, at least try one of their mellow songs (only clean vocals). For example, Burden, Face of Melinda, Hope leaves, A fair judgement, etc. But I encourage you to also try some heavier songs (clean/harsh vocals), I hope you will appreciate the beauty of their compositions :)

It's a scream. It's a 'blackened scream' -- so the type you will commonly hear in black metal. They also do some blackened instrumental things as well. But yeah, I'd imagine you guys would have a pretty tough time with Vektor so it's probably wise to not put them on the list.
Luemm3l allegaeon Next album is going to be a beast… The first three songs they have released are better than anything on the new Fallujah, Which was extremely disappointing.
@@Myfartslinger yep, already heard apoptosis. Arguably their best. Also wasn't too crazy about ultraviolet, but harvest wombs, dreamless and flesh prevails all reign supreme over allegeaeons entire discography, at least in my book. That's the nice thing about music: something for everyone, even if we don't agree with each other.
you need to change your mindset. dont try to get better at tuning out the screaming, get better at appreciating and enjoying it. these vocalists train their voices and exercise their talents very comparably to an opera singer, i understand its not appealing to the ear at first, but its an acquired taste that you wont acquire if you only focus on tuning it out,
This band is very good, just not my taste. That death metal roaring I’ve tried so hard to like but I can’t. It just sounds so messy and too chaotic to my ears!
For me, the death metal vocals take away from anything good that may have been in the music. I like occasional not constant growls & screams. Slipknot does this well from their 3rd album on. Otherwise it's just distracting unpleasant noise for me. I've given it enough tries in my life.
Why not? Some things take a bit to cook. Are you into working on something that takes s bit of time to get right/better? This is like that . I hated Megadeth at first. His voice...that screech. It was just new, that’s all...
I feel ya. Now I get your first reaction. We are liking some of it more now. Check out our VEKTOR - Recharging the Void Video Reaction. ‘Nuff said for now. Thank you!!!!!

Luemm3l exactly!!
you need to change your mindset. dont try to get better at tuning out the screaming, get better at appreciating and enjoying it. these vocalists train their voices and exercise their talents very comparably to an opera singer, i understand its not appealing to the ear at first, but its an acquired taste that you wont acquire if you only focus on tuning it out,
This band is very good, just not my taste. That death metal roaring I’ve tried so hard to like but I can’t. It just sounds so messy and too chaotic to my ears!
It is an acquired taste. I took me many years to like it and the only bands that I love that uses it is this band and Opeth.
For me, the death metal vocals take away from anything good that may have been in the music. I like occasional not constant growls & screams. Slipknot does this well from their 3rd album on. Otherwise it's just distracting unpleasant noise for me. I've given it enough tries in my life.
You shouldn’t have to try to like it
Why not? Some things take a bit to cook. Are you into working on something that takes s bit of time to get right/better? This is like that . I hated Megadeth at first. His voice...that screech. It was just new, that’s all...
I do judge the song based on the scream and it sucks
I feel ya. Now I get your first reaction. We are liking some of it more now. Check out our VEKTOR - Recharging the Void Video Reaction. ‘Nuff said for now. Thank you!!!!!
You seem like the guy to avoid at parties, bud.
Please no more

Its not musical
Andrew Shupe what do you think “musical” means? Asking because I genuinely don’t understand your comment.
