  • In an effort to discover if there's a voice that can actually make Elizabeth uncomfortable, Jesus and Satan decided to team up in prog rock, and see if stark contrast might do the job.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Ne Obliviscaris for the first time, performing "And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope."

I should make a note here about the harsh vocals (with a bit of history): the two distinct extreme metal styles which use harsh vocals are Death Metal and Black Metal (then followed by Doom/Funeral Doom metal, but that's a different topic altogether). Philosophically, Black Metal (chiefly its second wave in the late 80s, early 90s) was meant to be "anti-metal", a resistive and political response to many things happening in the world and metal back in the late 80s. Death Metal with its deep growls was all the rage from America, featuring guys in sloppy track pants. Black Metal deliberately did the opposite - highly regimented, restrictive, TENSE, and right down to the harsh vocals: instead of deep growls, high pitched shrieking / rasps. What Mark (the harsh vocalist) is doing here are the Black metal shrieks. It's MEANT to sound painful and uncomfortable, even torturous. There are other Black Metal vocalists who take things to even more extremes with their use of shrieking. In NeO's music he often switches between Black Metal shrieks and Death Metal growls, something which first became noticed with Norway's band Enslaved (and caused an uproar in extreme metal circles at the time).

Ive known the boys since they first started touring Australia and have had many an unforgettable time with them and they often stayed at my house before they got signed.
No one deserves this kind of respect and appreciation then these blokes. They have worked so hard to get to where they are and I can say right now that finance has little to do with it. They adapted to the international touring expenses and profits as an Australian band after co-headlining the Cradle of Filth European and North American tours a few years back.
They have been ready to go for years but couldn't, mainly, because like every other touring band in the world, they had no venues to perform at due to social distancing.
Rest assured they have been keeping busy and will no doubt pump a massive tour for their new album and I cannot fuckin wait \m/

Kai Hahto the current drummer for Nightwish was the drummer for Wintersun at the time.

Well he still is in wintersun too as far as I know. He haven't just had time to play there recent years... Anyway definitely worth of checking that. Insane drumming, and vocal work as well as guitar playing. I think on a real records Jari was composing and playing all instruments (apart from drums which Kai did, although on seasons record he didn't had time and Jari was just programming those in). If I have understood correctly he has done all the background tracks too, which by itself are already insane (and have been published separately)... Insanely good composer, and vocalist and player. I like how you pointed out this was late in the set and how much energy they still had. If I have learned anything from going to metal shows, it's that nobody gets tired. Not the crowd, not the band, not the mice under the stage. It's like unlimited energy fills the entire room and feeds everybody. It's really one of my favorite things about live shows.
Edit: also yes, some of it is meant to make you feel uncomfortable. One of their longest pieces "Painters of the Tempest" starts off with a large segment that is INCREDIBLY uncomfortable, but the way the song flows and evves beyond that is really astounding and the ending is just.... so sweet.

The drummer isn't buckled in. He is wearing a GoPro camera on a chest harness. You can see the perspective of the chest-GoPro at 9:27 in the original video. To answer the question about Head Banging and playing.
Yes and No. Now, to give some context to the answer - some things are harder to play than others - I'll use Drums an example (since I'm a drummer) - but take your basic 4/4 Rock Groove (AC/DC style) I can play that without barely thinking, it's pretty much all muscle memory. So, if I'm playing that, I can head bang, Windmill, gesture, pull faces - pretty much do whatever as I'm not using a lot of conscious effort to play the Beat.
Now, if I was playing something that was very mentally taxing and requiring me to 'think' about the hits I'm playing, then I would find it harder to head-bang consciously, There'd probably still be a degree of head-bobbing that is an almost unconscious reaction to listening to/playing music, but not a determined head-bang.
And then of course we have to talk about practice and repetition - the more you play your own music, especially live, the more you are going to Head-bang along (assuming you are playing Metal and are getting into it) and the easier it becomes - I've seen George Kollias (Drummer for a band called Nile) Headbanging along whilst playing some 260 BPM Blast Beats, an impossibility for me, but for him (who regularly plays at that tempo), it's obviously 'easy' enough for him to head-bang along.
So to conclude, the harder the material for your current skill level that you are playing, the much harder it is to Head-bang and play, but as you progress and get used to it, the easier it becomes (like most things...).

      Headbanging whilst playing...
So, drummer with long hair here. Too many times with my old band, swallowed my hair... Choking whilst playing through the whole damned song without dropping a beat was always and interesting muscle memory check. If you want to stick to more interesting metal from Australia I want to point you to Be'lakor. Alternatively take a look at Swiss-American Zeal & Ardor. It's avant-garde metal with influences of both black metal and African-American spirituals, truly a unique sound. Oceans of Slumber is also interesting, they're doom metal but their new stuff is quite experimental. On the other side of the ocean you have Thy Catafalque, another avant-garde metal band from Hungary. Or try Myrkur, who alternates her post-black metal with Scandinavian folk (rock), because variety is the spice of life.
Btw a violin isn't remotely the weirdest instrument in metal. Mesopotamia Inc uses an accordion and Rivers of Nihil enjoys a saxophone. It's the beauty of metal, if you want to you can mix in literally anything. Honestly though, it's a joy to watch your journey here. Even if you decide to check out none of the above. But I recommend you do :P
On the drummer, he's not strapped in. That's a chest mounted drum cam.

Also if you watched the most recent where she analyzes The Odyssey by Symphony X, she's not averse to long instrumental sections. For more of that scream/singing duality, I suggest Fleshgod Apocalypse - Epilogue. Fleshgod frequently uses an opera soprano in their recordings, and I'd love to see your take on them :)

Yea, they'd be a great reaction for an opera singer to do. Great blend of the styles. Or perhaps some corpo-mente.

Yes definitely. I want to suggest Anaal Nathrakh, but live they're very different from recorded, and the videos don't show the band much (unsurprising really, as there's only two of them).

Saw the thumbnail and am going to die waiting to watch this. Can't wait to hear your breakdown of time signatures, dueling vocals, and the intricacies of the entire song.
After watching your reaction, love when they both start singing and you can't control yourself. A song by them to appreciate their vocals more would be As Icicles Fall or Eyrie. Little shorter in length and definitely feature more vocals.

Sometimes headbanging while playing an instrument actually helps you keep track of time, especially if you're not playing in a normal time signature. And also it looks cool haha. Also you should definitely check out Oathbreaker - 10:56 / Second Son Of R (on Audiotree Live) their vocalist is really something else. Kinda similar to this vocalist in a way, you might get The Ring vibes from her too.

This band put together everything that I like: extreme prog death metal, with a good balance of clean and guttural vocals. The violin as a main instrument is the icing on the cake. Many death metal band use some this orchestral instruments just as an introduction to some songs and the rest just usual of style. They are just the best band I ever listen to.

Usually I’m not into these reaction videos but I have to say that this one being dissected by someone who actually knows music in general, as far as the writing process of arrangements, time signatures and choice of notes and melody is something I can appreciate. Especially when it’s a beautiful woman who is doing it as well.
If you haven’t already I highly recommend this you give this entire record a listen, several listens in fact. PORTAL OF I is the name of this, their debut full length. Then listen to CITADEL and URN and I promise that your mind will be blown in their musical progression as a band and also individual musicians. These guys are hands down one of the best bands I’ve ever heard quite honestly. One of my all time favorite bands. I can never get bored listening to their music and I’ve heard every song of every record hundreds of times and it doesn’t get old.

In regard to the tail end of the video: Xen isn't Satan. Haven't you ever heard the Charlie Daniels Band? Satan plays the violin. Tim is Satan. Xen is Jesus.
Dan isn't wearing a seatbelt. He's playing with a GoPro strapped to his chest so you can see the drums from his perspective.
I love this reaction so much.

Like some others here I would like to recommend that you check out some Opeth. The singer Mikael Akerfeldt has both a great singing voice and at one time was said to have one of the best growls in metal. Would specifically like to recommend basically anything from their Royal Albert Hall concert, as this is where he began to become a much more confident and colorful singer (even though he had an amazing voice before anyway). Will link a couple of my favorites from that concert below. Have been really enjoying the reactions, excited to see you checking out this sort of stuff.
Harlequin Forest - ua-cam.com/video/0HRett4kOpM/v-deo.html A great first Opeth piece, song starts at 1:30ish but there is some funny banter beforehand
The Moor - ua-cam.com/video/Of-cMd1XHA0/v-deo.html A bit heavier and an older piece of theirs with more growls than Harlequin Forest
Harvest - ua-cam.com/video/oJYepilhlRY/v-deo.html A rather chill song with only clean vocals
