    What's the difference between the IEW Themed units and the Student's style & structure video curriculum? I explain it here!! ua-cam.com/video/QZq4xD4xark/v-deo.html

    Thanks for that game idea!! Love that!
    I didn't buy the Fun & Fascinating teacher guide. I just taught from the student's book because like you said on here, the guide didn't look like it was helpful. Glad to know I was right!

      You were right! And since you’re probably also familiar with IEW, definitely wouldn’t need it. Experience is very helpful!! 😉

    Thank you for this video. I am working through fun & fascinating at the moment with my 9yo. I haven’t used the teacher guide either. And I was literally googling last night “do I need IEW teacher guide for themed units” as I’m thinking of doing the ancient history one next and shipping to Australia is $$$$$ so wondering about just getting the student book. So helpful to see how you find the other teacher guides more helpful.

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan

      They are definitely more helpful!! HOWEVER…… if you feel confident in helping your student using the IEW way, and you understand all the “style and structure” lessons (and this could be if you’ve used IEW multiple times), you could probably do without it. You could also stream the teaching style and structure! That’s where Andrew Pudewa teaches you how to teach it. He teaches the main concepts of each unit. So his teaching wouldn’t be specific to your specific themed lesson. But it’s is specific to the topics of each of the 9 main writing units that are in every IEW writing curriculum.

    Apparently IEW isn't selling All Things Fun & Fascinating anymore. It was discontinued in Dec. 2023. I just know bc I was trying to buy it in Feb. 2024. I'm going to have my 5th & 6th graders do it next year, and I was able to find clean student books on eBay. I didn't think my kids would enjoy the history themed books, as I also have experience with those through CC with my older kids. Then I realized IEW has a whole new line of for elementary school that lines up with their new deal with Hillsdale. The teacher manuals look good for those. But I'd already bought the AFF before I realized the new ones had come out. I wish I'd seen the other ones earlier bc I appreciate a good teacher manual, but since I have prior experience with IEW, I figure I can manage with AFF.

      Oh seriously?!?!? I wish I would’ve seen that! I bet they’re updating it, which be a great improvement!! But then I would not have spent time making this video. 😂😂😂

      Yeah, there are new theme-based writing ones for 3-5th grade called Discoveries in Writing, Adventures in Writing, and Wonders of Science Writing Lessons.

    We did Fables, Myths, and Fairy Tales this year in our co-op (not CC) and my fourth grader and I loved it! It's soooo much better than Abeka's writing program! We are going to do Structure and Style A this coming year for him!

      Really??? I’ve never looked closely at Abeka. I’ve considered BJU. But I’m curious. How is this better than Abeka?? I’ve always had the impression that Abeka was strong in language arts.

    • @jenniferborka8328

      @@OurHOMEschoolPlan Abeka is amazing with phonics and grammar. But I don't feel like they teach you HOW to write like IEW does. To be fair I am basing this on their 2nd and 3rd grade writing program. Perhaps the older grades are better. But based on those grades I knew I didn't want to do the older grades. They would give a writing prompt and that was about it. My son would just stare at the page blankly, not knowing what to write. Also I grew up using Abeka and since writing came easily for me I didn't find it hard, but my other siblings really struggled with the lack of direction. They expect 3rd graders to start doing book reports without really teaching the basics of good writing. I have all my kids do Abeka from k-3 (their phonics and reading program is so so good) and then I switch the LA to IEW.

      @@jenniferborka8328 now that you say that, that IS actually what I’ve heard also. One of my friends sent her kids to a Christian school that used Abeka and that’s exactly what she said. No instruction on HOW to write a paper. She actually began homeschooling her kids a couple years ago and switched to IEW for that exact reason. I can’t believe I forgot that. 🤪

    I noticed highlighting in the passages. Are they highlighting what they are putting in their key word outline?

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan
      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  Місяць тому

      That’s something I had then do. But they can also underline. I think it’s easier to read everything and underline/highlight before deciding what goes in the key word outline. 😉

    I need help placing my daughter to start IEW. She will be in 11th grade in the fall and we have never used IEW. We used fix it grammar level 1 a few years ago.

      ALL of the writing programs that teach style and structure (including the themed units) will all start from the beginning of the writing process. If you’re worried about it going too fast, I’d consider dropping her back to the JR High levels (Check out the free lessons - I have a link in the description for that) and you can see the difference in levels with the videos. The only difference between the age/grade level of all these are WHO the audience is (in the videos, the classroom will be that particular grade level). Also how quickly it moves through the material, and the source material. So for example, when first learning how to write from a source text, the text will be a much easier reading level for the younger grades than for the high school grades. But the process is all the same for the most part. The high school levels will go a bit deeper.
      If that didn’t help, I’d ask IEW for help placing her! 😊

    I’ve had my 6th grader do the S and S 1B this year but also have an up coming 4th grader. Do you think I could do a theme unit with both my 7th and 4th grader together?? Just don’t think my 4th grader is ready to do the videos alone 1A level so was thinking theme based for her but wondering if both of them could do it together? Thanks so much for your videos…they are so helpful.

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan
      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  2 місяці тому

      You’re welcome! ☺️ I think you could as long as the material is a lower level (which in my opinion isn’t that big of a deal even for an7th grader). And then you could also just have your 7th grader do more papers per unit and allow your 4th grader to do less and go slower if needed.

    Did/do you have them go through a keyboarding program of some sort to teach them to type?

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan
      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  2 місяці тому +1

      I think I used a free online program for my son to learn proper technique and then he perfected his skill with an online game called “nitrotype!” He connected with friends on it and it lets you race against them (typing fast helps your car go faster towards the finish line). He types faster than I do now at about 90 words per minute!
      I haven’t taught my daughters proper typing technique yet.
