Making Mismatched Fuel Sender and Gauge Work Using Meter Match

  • Today I install a Meter Match in the old Willys Jeep which is now using a tank and sender from a CJ7. This mix of parts will not work together unless calibrated using the Meter Match. The Meter Match can be used on fuel, oil, or water senders and gauges as long as they are resistance based to ground.

    Loved this one. No idea if I'll ever need to do this, but now I know I can. Thanks Steve.

    Absolutely stellar video, I used this to get my gauge in my 71 volvo 142E to work because I installed a rallye cluster, which was never really available here in the US, so they used a different sending unit, got it wired in and everything works with your help! Thanks again!

    Very nice tutorial on this calibration. I was a testman for an electric utility and that was top shelf instructions you provided. Thank You

    Thats a great piece of kit and looks to be able to accommodate several ways to get accurate readings. Good vid. Would love to see more like this.

    I have never seen anyone show this fix ! That was great Steve! You should add the link at the description but also contact them once your views are shown to see if they would sponsor a video or provide you with a bunch of free gear to add fixes to other cars ! 👍🇨🇦

    All my old GM trucks had different empty locations on the dash gauge. This is what I needed to fix that. Very cool Steve.

    Great to see I can get rid of the stick I use to check fuel level. Educational and something I have not seen before. Thanks

    Matt's Off Road Recovery, and Robby Latham Channels (Utah) need your collaboration on several non-metered vehicles...
    Could be a great "Fuel Rescue" video to grow your channel...

    Interesting subject, we all got sick of fuel gauges that read either 3/4 full or empty! this is a perfect application for a cheap modern microcontroller.

    It's a great idea... Didn't work with my old Toyota Landcruiser for some reason. I think the factory voltage is too high coming from the sending unit. They even send a replacement unit.

    If you have an irregular shaped fuel tank, the sender may not match the actual fuel level. As a check, I put 1/4 tank of gas, then 1/2, then 3/4, then full, and see if the gauge reads correctly (that's assuming you know how many gallons your tank holds).
    My tank takes a long time to get from full to half, then from half to empty, it goes quick. I set the device so the gauge reads half when the tank is filled half full. I'd rather know when I'm running out of gas than when its full.

    Have this unit. If I put my 12v to the meter instead of my gauge, and a wire from the meter to the gauge, what goes on the other gauge terminal?

    Years ago I wanted to convert my Fire Department Jeep to 12 volts. It is a '54 CJ-3B. The instruments were the thing I had the most difficulty planning for. I got a lot of advice. Ultimately the project was nixed due to office politics. Now the Jeep is retired to parade duty. The Tanks Meter Match is the thing I would have needed back in the day. And, I never was fond of sitting on top of the gas tank.

      lol try doing the 12 volt conversion using the delco alternator and having the starter re-wound for 12 volt and installing an in tank fuel pump. Only to have a seat bolt break, slide the seat frame forward and pinch the fuel pump wire to the point you're going down the road and smoke starts coming up between your legs.
      LOL I couldn't bail out of my 48' willy's quick enough! fortunately I was able to turn down a gravel road and let it come to a halt in a field. Jumping off and releasing the pressure of the pinch probably saved the jeep.

    Can you explain how to connect the wires rather than explain the working of this gadget (which is in the manual anyway)? Can I use this device to operate the original (moving coil) prewar Fuel Gauge (Smith) with a more modern sender unit? I have a "+" and a "P" (petrol tank) terminal on the gauge, and a "W" (which means +) and a blank terminal on the sender. The "+" and the "W" terminals are connected with a RED wire, the "P"and the blank terminals with a YELLOW wire. You use 4 different colours which makes it difficult to see which is which. Can you perhaps explain?

    mine doesnt work, since my car is a evo 8 which has too fuel levels as its a saddle type tank... i had too take the signals from the oem cluster harness as both sender send the signal togather to cluater gauge. ... when i try to calabrate the meter match with a extern fuel gauge all is okay for full empty and middle as far as calbration is concerned with the fuel assembly out of tank but when i put it in the tank the fuel lvl gauge goes to full... so i dont know what im doing wrong even the meter match team dont know how to help me.... the fuel gague works sort of okay expect it bounces a lot when i drive the car without the meter match.

    I guess it will also work with resistance based gauges such as oil pressure. Is there an equivalent item for speedos which use square wave counters?

  • @leighwilkinson2428
    @leighwilkinson2428 3 роки тому

    Would this item work if you have a fuel sender from Europe that reads low resistance when full and a digital gauge from america that reads other way round. I need to reverse the way gauge reads as full tank is empty.

    How much value resistent can be adjusted sir ?

  • @poker8193
    @poker8193 7 місяців тому +1

    Could you just use a pot or resistor to make it work ? Just asking

    • @ThisWeekWithCars
      @ThisWeekWithCars  7 місяців тому

      Nope that won’t work because a resistor can only offset it one direction.

    • @ThisWeekWithCars
      @ThisWeekWithCars  7 місяців тому

      And what if your gauge works opposite of your sender. This device lets any sender work with any instrument.

      @@ThisWeekWithCars follow up I used a reostat to dial n my gauge then measured the omms and used a resistor to bring the total range down to work with the factory. I asked an old guy and it took 20 minutes to get r done
