A detailed tour of my horse barn/run in shed. As a new horse owner I brain stormed to come up with an idea that would be both practical and functional. I needed a safe shelter for my horses while also providing the room I needed to store feed and tack.
So far this has proved to be very efficient. Feel free to give me ideas on how to expand in the comments section below.

I don’t know why, but this video made me tear up! It’s so clear how thoughtful you are when it comes to meeting Pearl’s needs. Thank you for the tour!
A 12 x 12 area for hay can fit about 100 bales when it's actually loaded from floor to ceiling. Don't ask how I know.
Personally, I would get some 12 ft long horse panels so you can close the area off up front, make the one into a stall by just using a horse panel or two. I'd consider two things off the back. One is hay storage. The other is tractor/vehicle storage. If you use a 4 wheeler to move hay around from a bigger shed or move bales from the back into the front smaller area once per month it would work. Same with a tractor which has too many uses to count on an equine property.
For a feed room I use Gamma2 Vittles Vaults and have worked at professional barns who do as well. They hold about 60lbs each and have a food grade BPA container with a fully sealing lid where you can write the name of the food or horse with a dry erase marker and then wipe off if you change feed, amount, etc. I also like Tuff Stuff Feed and Seed storage containers if you will be doing over 50lbs of grain at a time and want to store 100lbs+ in a container. I have used them for 10+ yrs and had no problems with mice getting in for bulk chicken feed.
Great little setup. I had horses for 30 years. Everything looks really workable. I see a couple of things you might have problems with. 1) I had stall partitions similar to what you have, I eventually had to put plywood on both sides as horses kicked and chewed through those boards. 2) The horses will chew on your support posts eventually. I solved it by putting a pvc pipe over the posts. I did it before I put the roof on but I think it would work to cut pvc pipe in half lengthwise then glue and zip tie or wire the pipe together. 3) The glass window...I would have a horse find a way to get it's self hurt somehow. Maybe build a fence to keep them away from the window.
Thanks for the tips.
@@RuralVibesVa My pleasure.
@@RuralVibesVa I thought the easiest way to protect your horses from breaking the window is some hail screen on the outside.
You seem to understand horses. Do you think that if bought as adults they will be hostile? I am asking because I intend to buy a horse. in the future.
@@alexanderhans3266 Wow. That's an interesting question. Do you mean if they have not been handled before will they be hostile? Horses are rarely aggressive as they are prey animals so they tend to Flight over Fight per their nature. They fight when they feel cornered or threaten and that's why we train in round pens where there are no corners to be threatened in. I would advise you find a horse place to take lessons in the future and learn your own skill level with horses. A green rider/owner and a green horse = black and blue for both of them. If this is a first horse and you have limited experience you want a more seasoned horse with a few miles on it, but still many miles to go. You would need a horse person to help you find a good horse for you and your skill level so getting to know horse people in your area through lessons, riding schools, etc. is a good way to network and you may find someone has a horse they are looking to sell also. Always get a PPE (Pre Purchase Exam) by a vet of your choosing. This is like having your mechanic check out the car before you buy. Always. Have an unbiased experience horse person give you their opinion on the horse.
I think it’s absolutely perfect for two horses !! I also love the scenery in the pasture. I’m pretty jealous!! It’s exactly what I’d like to have. Thanks for showing me !
Merry Christmas 🎁🎄
Oh gosh you just saved me the biggest headache of trying to figure out how I wanted mine built. Using your footprint! Beautiful!
I thought I was here for your barn tour but I was really here for pearl
Beautiful! Both your barn, your ideas and inspiration…..and Pearl is a Gem.
Thank you :)
She now has a buddy and they are inseparable.

Wow!!! Thats so beautiful...I love the colours and the front porch area such a good idea there!! Pearl is so lovely.
Beautiful. I’d love to have this type of setup.
Love this!
My setup as a kid was quite similar:)
Our setup had individual stall/run ins with a door that opened into combo tack/feed rooms in the back, easy to add on to further utilize your open space at the rear, while repurposing your current build if ever need be.
In the front of the run/stalls we installed partition fencing to create small private runs (that also was were our water troughs were to cut down on moisture) the runs than opened into the pasture, perfect to make the horses rehabbing feel included or to give them some sunshine if the weather was to iffy for full turnout.
All in all I love your design!!
I like the porch overhang idea.
Nice video thanks for the insight and thanks for getting straight to the point!
That is almost exactly what I’m getting ready to build! Love it! Pearl seems like a sweetheart and excellent helper ;-) Thank you for sharing this video!
Glad it helped, thanks for watching. :)

Aww your mare loves you! Hope you get a second horse soon, she needs a buddy!!
We’ve actually gotten a second mare since this video and they are inseparable. :)
Horses follow the person who feeds them.
Looks good! We are moving from Arizona to Tennessee! So many changes to make for our 16 head. We will have a few stalls especially for our stallions. another wise it will be pasture!
She is darn cute and that barn is really nice
Great design and horse friendly with options. All horses LOVE to come and go at will. Good Job!
Beautiful Barn and pasture
That is beautiful!
Love the barn! Nice view of the pasture too.
That is a nice set up. Very practical design and looks nice
Thanks for watching. :)
Very nice set-up. I've owned horses my whole life and I think you did a fantastic job. The netting or wire on the ceiling is genius! I've never seen that done before!
Thank you! ☺️ The entire set up has proven to be very useful and practical. Thanks for watching.
Awww she's beautiful 🥰
That’s really beautiful
Heck yeah! Beautiful job
Very nice, clean and organized- and looks good too. Looking forward to more vids!
Thanks for watching.
Beautiful Barn! Love the setup
Thank you.
Nice ! I like the blue and the flexibility you created for future
PERFECT! Love your horse
Shamelessly emailed to request your builder's info to build that barn on my own place here in the Blue Ridge. It's perfect
Thank you for the video. That is the exact set up we are looking for on our property. 👍
I'm looking to build something like this too. I have a concrete pad already down that had a large shed/workshop on it originally
Thank you this will help
It is beautiful brother.
This is a great looking barn/run in shed. It is very well thought out. I have been studying it for months and have plans to use your prototype to build our own.
How tall is your barn? You mentioned at least 10 feet. It looks closer to 12 or 14 feet. For add on purposes would 16 feet be ideal?
Secondly, is there anything you would change or modify now that you have two horses and have been using it a while?
Thanks again for this great video and the one where you showed the stages of building it. It has been very helpful.
@@brookebutcher hi there. Thank you. To be honest I don’t recall how tall it is but I would estimate 14’ at the tallest point.
To this day I can’t think of a single thing I would change. Since the build I’ve only had a couple of mice sneak in. Thats becuase of the wood ceiling I have in there has made sure they stay out.
I would also recommend you get the bird netting.
Thanks for watching. So glad it helped.

Very very nice. That's what I need for my animals
Thank you, hope it helped give you some ideas.
Thanks for watching.
Beautiful
Looks amazing! Good job. Question…… what did you do for the stall floor? Was it originally grass? Did you put something just over the grass? Thank you
I keep all my animal feed in 32G, 20G, 10G Brute bins with tight lids, the rats and mice are not an issue anymore. I store the hay on CBS blocks elevated from the ground, and out of the weather.
Good idea, thanks for watching.
Exactly.
Exactly what I’m looking for!
Do you mind sharing a drawing of this or approximate cost?
I don’t have a drawing available. Imagine 4 12x12 squares then another 12 foot overhang off the entire front.
The cost in April 2021 was around 23k I believe.
Hey men what is the name of the contractor you used so I can get in contact with them.
4:31 she stole the show!
We are looking to build a barn when we find the house we are going to move to. This is exactly what I want built. It's perfect for our two horses. Did you have to have someone that specialized in barns to build it? I have only checked into prefab ones so far.
I hired someone who builds pole barns. (Contractor) he’s built others for horses but builds all sorts of building for different reasons.
He went mostly off my hand drawn ( non talented) sketch. He was the one who suggested I make it a bit bigger to maintain 12x12 spacing. Glad it helped and thanks for watching.
@@RuralVibesVa Thank you for responding so quickly. We are looking to buy a house with some land to bring our horses home and this is the perfect barn.
You could put four in the middle if you made two stall under the overhang putting the horses all together and feed and tack on the ends.
Love the tour and barn. Thanks for the info! I'd love to know ballpark cost and what area of the country to compare. I'd love to have something like that to start as well.
Thanks for watching. I live in VA and in the spring of 2021 it was right at around 24k. To even get that price I had to shop around extensively.
@@RuralVibesVa Love the quality and detail you put in! I am in MD, could you please let us know your builder? Thanks for the video!
Thank you! Love it.
Also. Run a water like to your barn. I didn't and had to haul water twice a day, sometimes in 10 inches of snow.
Yes, I do intend on doing that this spring. I currently have their watering trough close enough to my house for a long hose.
Gee 4 replays, no responses,.let's try 1 more. Very nice video, very interesting and informing. You could just keep adding on as you see fit. Do you have any idea what your stall floors may turn out to be. Dirt,. Sand Rick. Etc. Thanks
Thanks for watching. It is currently dirt and I use pine shavings.
Looks awesome you got a great job done 👍🏽
Thanks!
What were the budget numbers (round numbers are ok) for this vs a pre built wooden option?
Hey bud around how much did it end up costing you for that setup if u don't mind me asking?
Hi, it's been about a year, how has the ground in the stalls and around the barn held up. Again what did you put down over the ground and how is it to clean up. Thanks and Take Care
My first barn was a converted work shed. I divided it in half. Half a run in she'd, half feed room. I kept tack in my garage. Converted shed had electricity so I could keep heated water buckets. You don't need fancy, expensive . Improvise.
Do you know what color that siding is? I love your barn.
I am not certain for the color, but it was off the “color chart”. He ordered it from a building supply in PA. All the blues he had access to didn’t match our house.
Not sure where you are located, but would you mind sharing your builder's name/info?
Hi. Could you please tell me the height of your bldg, ground to rafters and ground to peak. Thank You,have a great day.
Thumbs up!
How much this Would cost to get it built ?
What did this cost you? Maybe I missed that part.. thanks!
What was the cost
Hi, may I ask what is the distance from ground to rafters on your barn/run in shed. I would greatly appreciate it. Really like your set-up.. Thanks
Hi. I’ll have to measure it when I get a chance. I would say it’s at least a good 10ft or more.
Don't want to bother you, but did you remove any grass or did to get to bare dirt before building shelter. Thank you so much, plan on using your design with a few changes. Have a great day
I didn’t remove any grass either. The contractors did a bit but that was just to they could set the floor joists. All the grass died in exposed areas soon after we put the horses in there.
Hi, Did you prepare your ground in any way before you put your shelter up. If so, How. Thanks
No, I didn’t. It was “relatively flat”. Even in it’s construction the workers framed and set the floors in both rooms. As for the run in portions it’s just bare dirt.
Where are you located and what the total cost of the build?
I see the cost was 23k in April of 2021
Hi, on your barn ,run in shed, is the exterior bottom brown section, wood or metal. Thank You.
It’s tongue and groove (pine?) wood boards. I just stained it.
Hi. Based on the way your barn turn-in project currently sits, may I ask approx how much cost do you do you have invested, minus land. Thanks Alot
As of April 2021 you can expect 20-25k
(Thanks to covid)
@@RuralVibesVa Thank You
Do you have any estimates on the cost to build this?

I think cutting corners such as skipping on lighting is going to cost you in the long run.
If you eventually have more than one horse you will trap the lower horse in the free access stall. There is only one way in. Not good. Note that the rails on your fence are on the wrong side of the posts.
