Being someone who was deeply committed to climbing for 25 years, that was a total pleasure to watch. The quiet passion and humor is so familiar. While I can only stand back in awe of the talent & dedication that Hazel F (let alone Alex H!) bring to the game, it took me straight back to the essence of why I and friends spent every spare moment climbing. Jeez, am I really too old to go climbing again ?!
Nate Trent "thus this is fake" - oh, really? Why would I would want to pretend I'm an old climber? Wish I were a young one again. I used to climb a bit with Hazel's father but never met her at the time - doesn't bother me in the slightest if you believe that or not. I just thought it was a very well made glimpse into climber mentality and felt like saying so.
This is one of the greatest photography stories I've seen so far! Fantastic photos and locations. Love the differing perspectives given by the presenters.
My life needs more exploring! Travel everywhere, climb everything, hike and bike until I run out of earth then jump on a sailboat and continue the journey :)
I am an Arab, and in Oman and that side of peninsula that for any action looks strange or odd they call it witch or jinn in exaggeration of course. Also, we are rarely climb rocky mountains especially on free soloing, we tend and lean towards hiking more than climbing.
Geoff O'Neal The rockfaces they climb usually have a grade accompanying it which is a indicator of the difficulty. Honnold is known for his bold climbing of routes he knows he can do and has done before. These are not at his absolute limit. When he tries hard for something with a rope or when going bouldering he has not reached the grades plenty of other people have reached. Atleast 60 people a year reach the 9a/5.14d treshold which Honnold has never done. The same goes for bouldering, 8C has been done quite a few times but I don't know if Honnold ever got above 8B. So yes, he is a very talented climber who surely understands his limits and body, but he is by far not the best.
Geoff O'Neal not using a rope makes you better at climbing in my book. when climbing without a rope you are unable to lose focus, you will fall. Climbing with a rope, you are able to lose focus, the rope will catch you. It takes more skill to keep focus for HOURS on a wall, i mean think about it, when have you ever kept your focus on somthing for longer than 10 minutes? Simply put this guys brain is wired differently than ours, and he has a high level of skill in being able to focus and keep fear out of his mind. Alex Honnold is fucking epic man, a damn good free solo climber.
philomath369 Not using a rope does not make you a better climber. He only climbs stuff he is sure about he can do without falling multiple times in a row. I have also done a few highballs that I could've broken some bones with those were all much easier than what I am capable off.
Rainbowstunting he climbs stuff he is confident he wont fall, he never knows for sure if he will fall or not, and climbing a wall for hours on end without a rope, without falling is amazing, is all im saying. climbing style without a rope will be different than with a rope, so we shouldnt really compare the two.
Great video. 3 great guys each different. I don't think Marks an ass he's just older with lots of experience under his belt. Someone has to hold reins.
I wont follow these boys after watching this, they are just such nice guy's and If I follow their careers I know something bad will eventually happen to at lease one of them. Great climbers and thoroughly decent human beings
Breathtaking and inspiring and funny as can be too! As a housewife I never look at this kind of video.. but I sure am pleased to have stumbled across this with its catchy luring title!
Really nice talk of them. I like they give insight in the expedition and have time for some jokes as well 👍 Exploring the unknown - that's not a dream anymore, it's a plan! 😏 This summer it's gonna be all 180 summits above 2000m in the state of Bavaria/Germany 🤘 Wish us luck!
pigjubby1 The way you speak about the vid shows you clearly do not see the determination and effort required for what they do, and as such probably have never ''tried'' so hard, or you would recognize it, and that you're probably a bitter person complaining, like all the others, saying ''rich people can do this, I can't because I'm not lucky!'' What arrogance? You speak out of your ass and belittle athletes who pretty much live to climb, and are probably training, thinking, dreaming and speaking of climbing all the time. Most (most, not ALL) climbers are far from rich (by my and probably your standards), and you would know if you bothered to check a bit and not talk out of your ass like that.
I agree this 100% climbing with out rope absolutely shows u have more confidence and no fear one wrong move and ur a goner that has to be in there head +Philomath369
I got it !!!! You climb on rocks with great difficulty falling into the sea full of sharks !!!! I loved it !!! lol Guys, you guys are very brave !!!! I almost freaked out with the opening of the video !!! I am a very fearful !!!!
Best climbing video. One of the best, seriously! But super annoying yellow square in the right low corner! Why? To constantly be reminded that it's a National Geo. docu? Sad ...
This is a really well shot video. The Musandam is a great place for adventurers and really close to where I live in Dubai, only 90mins by car. It’s been popular with climbers for ages and DWS has been going on here for at least 9 years. There’s a great guidebook to the whole area including the DWS, which was published about 5 years ago but expats have been DWS here long before that. I noticed that no one mentioned this in the video. There is a lot of readily available information out there, if you just look. They should have got in touch with the guys who pioneered this area. The village of Sibi, where they did the long climb, is really close to a popular tourist and cruise-liner port at the town of Khasab. Most of the DWS is done off a dhow (an Arabic wooden boat) rather than the gin-palace these guys were on, though many people circumnavigate and explore the Musandam by kayak and surf-ski. There’s even an adventure race here that’s been running for several years.
Mark Synnott's a splendid story teller!
It reminds me of that quote that a raconteur is just a fancy word for a liar. He’s great!

Nate Trent quiet possibly the single most stupid comment I have ever read and I can deduce that you are a true douche, take a bow.
You're never too old to climb! There's a 97 year old climber at my gym!
@@michalifabian9646 What a dope 97 old! That's amazing.
@@Rycamcam yeah, me two years ago was mistaken, he's 90. Still amazing,!
thanks, these longer uploads are much more enjoyable.
This is one of the greatest photography stories I've seen so far! Fantastic photos and locations. Love the differing perspectives given by the presenters.
The story with the bandit around 7:00 was the funniest thing I've heard all week
+Thomas Todd I think they were sand people. It looked just like Tatooine.
same I'm laughing so hard rn 😂
They should have beaten those bandits up and threw them off them ledge.
Alex!! I don't know why I like him so much
+shaikha almeer Same, he's just so real, so humble, and just has that something special. Dudes rad
shaikha almeer I meet him today at climbing school
Maybe bcs he lives in a van / lived.. :p
A 4yr old post, but I was crying almost all the way through the video...serious climbs, yes, but funny banter throughout had me in tears!
My life needs more exploring! Travel everywhere, climb everything, hike and bike until I run out of earth then jump on a sailboat and continue the journey :)
Did you do this?
Beautiful comment
Nat. Geo. wow I'm really loving these pieces on people sharing stories of their climbs. both inspirational and amusing!
Are there any more of these talks recorded since 2014?? These are sooo good! +National Geographic
"Basically they think Alex is a witch." Omfg xD

*Almag, Faris* thanks for the explanation!

So Jimmy shot all the footage? that's really nice camera work, not to mention very nice cameras.
Awesome. And a high five to Nat. Geo for chronicling the efforts of these superstars. The recent magazine piece was great.
this has to be one of the most beautiful and entertaining climbing videos i've ever seen
I meet Alex today at my climbing school!!!!!! I was like waaaaaaaaaaaht !!!!!!!!!!!!
I really enjoyed this. Glad to meet the people that surround Alex too.
Honnold is funny as hell. 'Mark you have to divide by 10'. LMAO
I don’t think you can top this. This is by far the gnarliest thing ever. Period. I don’t see how anyone could ever. Ever do anything more gnarly
Have you seen Alex's El Capitan climb?
I love those stories. Thank you! Amazing pictures by the way =)
Alex is truly a ROCK STAR.

Wow, an awesome, "What Men Want," movie advertisement!!
RIGHT at the 21:40 mark when Jimmy has just segue'd!!👍
Any sport, Alex Honnold is the premiere athlete on this Planet, possibly this Galaxy and most likely in the top 10 in the Universe. Really.
kentish ! He is a good climber, but there are way better. The thing with Alex is his incredibly calm mind and his lovely approach to climbing :)

Ron Wylie and now Alex has done the impossible climbing el cap.
thanks for the upload and thanks to the actors Alex and co. Great shoots.
Crazy to think that this was more than three years before Honnold's epic, (and Academy Award-winning,) ascent of El Cap in June 2017. 👍
So inspired right now. These guys are true athletes!
Yeah. Alex will be remembered as one of the greatest athletes that ever lived.

Rich people traveling the world and climbing rocks.
Sounds like fun.
pigjubby1 People who worked waaaaaay harder than you EVER will are doing what they enjoy so yeah, its probably fun.
How do you know what I do, or have done, for a living? You get online and think it gives you knowledge to make that statement? Wow, what arrogance.

Also shows that humans are primates and are just as capably when it comes to climbing as all of the other apes.
+PootisPigeon I don't think this is what shows we come from primates.
