happy to see atleast 1 video on a 4.8 pulling a camper. i have the same set up and i bought a 4500 pound camper and was nervous about trany heating up but it seems yours did just fine so thank you!
I have never towed anything with a Chevy truck before, I've owned all Fords. I've got an 01 F350 SuperDuty XL with single rear wheels and it's a Gas job truck and it pulls considerably better than my previous 01 F150 7700 did with the same amount of loaded trailer. It's honestly amazing on how much of a difference it makes when your truck's got bigger and better auxiliary trans coolers, engine coolers, bigger rad, and all that. Not to mention bigger brakes, rotors, axles, suspension, and stronger frame rails. The heaviest I've towed so far with my 01 F350 was 10,000 lbs that being my 2000 lbs equipment trailer with a Ram 2500 Cummins, Mega Cab 4WD truck on it with a blown rad. Buddy said it weighed roughly 7800 lbs plus my trailer was just around the 10,000 lbs mark + 2 additional people riding home in my truck. Towed it amazingly well actually for a gasser truck. Had to tow it for an hour long drive down a highway at 1AM to get it back into our home town. Had my truck in tow/haul mode and in drive gear and just went smooth and gradual with it, was able to hold 95-100 KM/per/hour on the highway with it no problem, and slight inclines in the highway didn't serve as a big concern either surprisingly. I'm not saying I'd wanna pull 10,000 lbs daily or even weekly with my gas 1 ton but in the back of my mind I do know it can safely handle it if I ever needed it to. Most of the stuff I've hauled with it with Load+trailer was normally around the 5000-7500 lbs mark being cars, trucks, small SUVs and sometimes the odd piece of farm machinery or hydrolic equipment. Tows it fine, and more importantly it stops it fine as well, with a good aftermarket Curt brake controller, and tandem 5200 lbs trailer axles with electric trailer brakes, it never really scares me slowing down or taking a down hill slope with my 1 ton.
This truck was at least 7800 lbs the dude who owned it told me he weighed it in at that weight. If anything it was heavier than that. Is your truck a diesel? 4WD? His truck was a Dodge 2500 Mega Cab, 4WD, with the Cummins diesel. It was lifted a good 6 inches, and had wheel spacers with offset tires & rims. It was huge. Just barely fit on my trailer. My Gas 1 ton weighs in at 7000 lbs I just gave it an updated weigh the other week. It's a crew cab, long bed, 4WD, single rear wheel, with a few aftermarket accessories, my loaded toolbox etc. If my truck was diesel it would easily weigh another 800+ lbs. I'm on the Ford Super Duty forums and my truck is actually one of the lightest trucks on that whole group, a lot of the guys on there have diesel 3/4 and 1 tons that weigh well over 9000 lbs upwards to 10,500 lbs in dually 4WD but those are the big F350/F450 Crew Cab, Long bed FX4 Dually trucks with 6.7 PSD in them.
The 5.3 is a significant improvement. Fuel economy varies mainly based on wind. With no wind, probably somewhere in the 10-11mpg range. With windy conditions anywhere from 10 down to 6.
That's only MPG though. The Vortec 5300 got AFM, but the Vortec 4800 doesn't. But, this guy tows and AFM won't activate under a load, since maximum power is needed. For a significant improvement in power, what this guy's most likely concerned about, go with the Vortec 6000 with 360 HP and 380 lb-ft of torque (or Vortec 6000 Max/HO (High Output) for the performance version with 367 HP and 375 lb-ft of torque). Or, for the highest performance engine, go for one of my two favorite Vortec engines, the Vortec 6200 with 403 HP and 417 lb-ft of torque. And MPG, I don't give a fuck about MPG, but for people that do, you can expect to get around (I believe) 13 MPG from the Vortec 6000 and Vortec 6000 Max/HO. And my truck, an 08' Sierra Denali with the Vortec 6200 gets 11.5 MPG.
@@gmcdenali7178 The 5.3 is dog shit AFM ruins your lifters and then thats 12 hours of work and a $2000 job at least im a tech at Gm i would take the 4.8 over the 5.3 anyday
@@isaiahbrellisford8982 Gotta agree! I see no benefit in the 5.3, especially in this model year. 10 hp difference. Plus the 4.8 is more likely to have the 4 speed, harder on fuel but not known for exploding either. It's been in their 1 tons for 20 years and that was my main reason for the 4.8, second of course being the "dog $h!t" AFM.
very nice keep the videos comming with what you pull with your halfton.. i have a gmc sierra short bed half ton 4x4 with the 5.3 v8 and 3.75 rear gears. also upgrades is dual exaughst, air raid intake stage 3, and bully dog chip stage 3.. i pull trailers every day with my truck weather its my 5x8 loaded down to 1900 pounds or my 7x16 enclosed trailer loaded down to 4200 pounds.. get 12 miles to gallon pulln 7x16 and 16 miles to gallon pulln my 5x8.
I think the 4800 are stronger than people give them credit for. Especially if geared properly. Theres literally only have a liter more displacement with the 5.3 or only 500cc more so there not bad for what they are.
Tyler dotson I know there the same block bit everyone loves the 5.3 I'm just sayin for the 4.8 to be 500cc less it's still can be made stout but to many people kick the 4.8 to the curb
Only video I could find towing , I own a 5.3 Tx edition version Hauling a 20ft enclosed trailer at 3,420 Lb empty Haven't weighted when loaded with my equipment but I would say 6-7k range and not sure if it that's pushing it for my pick up no distribution bar yet and no sag ( 2'5 inch ball drop ) Hills are the only time I have to floor it.
The trailer switch is known as Tow/Haul Mode and it's used when the truck is towing/hauling a heavy load. What it does is it raises the shift points, meaning the trans will shift differently to try to keep the engine spinning as close to the power band as possible so all the power the engine can put out is used. And when he put it in 3rd gear, actually, what that does is it doesn't allow the trans to shift to any higher gear than the one selected. So, since this truck got GM's 4L80 4 speed trans and 3rd gear is selected, the trans can shift through gears 1st though 3rd, but can't shift to 4th gear. So, this guy wanted the trans to try to keep the engine spinning as close to the power band as possible with only using 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears.
Funny your worried about your trans temp at 79c lol mine hits 250f every weekend (that's 121c)pulling hot desert hills in the summer with 6k lbs behind it. Just change the fluids often and it's been reliable, slow, but reliable.
The blocks are not all the same only the 4.8 and 5.3 share the same blocks the 6.0 is a larger version all together from the smaller of the two. My experience......4 years Chevy tech, parts driver for corporate and now working for Ford corporate. 7 years all together in the auto industry.
You can't be serious. They're the same engine aside from the 4.8 having a smaller crankshaft. You can't tell the difference by sound. Everything else on them is the same.

Vortec power!

Nice. How it do on gas?

just seeing this. why did you have it in 3rd gear and the trailer switch on?

Trans is 4L60E not 80E
4l60e the80 is in the 2500 and 3500 with the 6.0.If it's gas .
Im sure it was a typo
also like to mention the gmc is a 1999 model.
U smashing on it you're gonna fuck up your truck !!!!!° u dont have to speed towing

thats not THAAT many miles. It is high though. My truck at the time had like 1,500 miles on it. (2500km)
@Branigan Shoemaker Nobody makes a 3.75 ratio you mean 3.73
You do not have to floor it all the time.
Kevin Price i agree. they need to be easy on that small engine
manny6584 The 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 are all the same block, just different cylinder boring. It will not hurt that engine.
I don't agree.
Only the 4.8 and 5.3 are the same block......I work for Chevy if you want question my information
Kevin Price As did I. I wonder if you were properly trained on GM LS Blocks.
So what's the purpose of this fool running his truck like that? Smh..
What are you crying about? How is he a fool?
@714BroDGAF not bad, about 12-14mpg loaded. But we had a slight tail-wind. Goin into the wind the week before it got like 6-8...
It tows really nice.

That’s definitely a 5.3 liter. Listen closely when he gets on it definitely not a 4.8
My 4.8 sounds the same nice gravel to it dont know till you drive one

I can say from a 5.3 owner myself this does sound like a 5.3 but it's probably the 4.8 like he says, also 4 speed auto
The stroke is different.
Thats a 4.8 it has the 4sp trans in 2011 if it was a 5.3 it would of had the 6spd trans with the shift button on the gear shifter
