The substance is not only the best film so far of 2024 it is the best female directed film of all time. Its insane. Its depraved. Its absurb. It is a film that is so compelling and unforgettable you can't take your eyes off of it for a second. Its requiem for a dream meets the fly meets Barbie but far more epic than any of those films. If there is any justice this film makes $100 million and gets ten Oscar nominations. 10/10
I saw the trailer pop up on my feed the other day, that alone just gave off a sense of discomfort and I was hooked… watching the film today I was completely blown away. I have no words for it, one of the craziest films I’ve seen.

I LOVED this film. The audience was incredibly respectful even though I thought it would've been kinda fun if we were all reacting. I can't wait to see this again. Can't believe this film was made with such a recognizable star.
I think it probably was. I also thought The Substance stuff in it's syringe looked a lot like the fluid from another Yuzna film, The Reanimator, and the Substance did technically do the same job.
Thank you Dan! I decided to watch this movie because of a comment that Dan made on a Box Office analysis and I'm so glad that I did. There were whole sections that I had my hands covering my eyes and face. It was a very intense movie that left me drained emotionally, mentally and physically. I could hear people munching away in the audience and I can't understand how they were able to do so. By the end of it, I was impressed by the maturity of the audience that I didn't see anyone walk out and I could hear a fair amount of them laughing. I was like: people are getting it! One of the best cinematic experiences I've ever had.
This movie is a flash bang stun grenade. Both brilliant & disturbing. It speaks to a strong topic without filters. I find blood and gore a hard watch. I squirmed a lot in this movie because of that. There were parts in the end chapter where they had used very strong imagery that I couldn't stomach. Overall - I could definitely see the art, and philosophy in this movie that left me completely speechless. It's such a weird feeling watching a movie knowing it was such a good movie, while feeling like I don't have enough brain soap to remove certain imagery from my head. Well done. I hope to never watch this movie again, while also recommending it to those brave enough to watch it. Wild.
At the end, i think the more risks u are willing to take and the clearer your voice as a filmmaker becomes, the bigger success you'll face !!! Can not wait to watch it!! Greetings from Mexico!
The movie has a 89% critics score and 82% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, a 8/10 IMDB rating, and a 4.1/5 on Letterboxd. I think it's safe to say that most ppl are loving this, the "divisiveness" that most ppl have brought up doesn't seem to be in play here.
Only comment I have, is that Elizabeth and Sue are LITERALLY one. Two different bodies, yes, but they do share consciousness. They recognize things from their other self, and their bodies obviously physically react to what the other does. The question is, why do they not remember certain aspects if they fully are one? But I do believe they are the same, one person. Because the person behind the substance said it multiple times. “You are one.”
I have watched it in Moscow tonight and it is absolutely about experience and feeling, not about pleasure of watching.. Totally would recommend it to people, who are more about art
The substance is a great homage to 3 greatest horror films of all time: Jekyll and Hyde meets The Fly with Carrie at the end! The blood splatter scene on the audience 😂
I think they do have the memories of the other self. They are one person and one mind. The thing is as the movie progresses the protagonist dissociates the two identities and starts thinking of them as seperate. Almost in the same sense of how when you do something stupid when you are younger, you can betrate your own behavior.
I haven't been this floored at a movie theater in years (well ok Speak No Evil in 2022 but that was at Fantasia...) - The Substance was such a spectacular movie on so many levels. Stunning actors performances, punchy, artsy, rhythmic direction, provocative yet straight to the point punch in your face message, insane gore and practical effects all rolled up into a movie.
They definitely are one person. They keep reminding you that they are one person with one mind. She just develops a different personality depending on which body she’s in.
@@DanMurrellMoviesI mean I’ve definitely woken up after a rough night and thought “what did I do?” But I was still the same person. And Sue has Liz’s memories that’s how she knows where she works and where to get her packages. I don’t think the movie is telling you they have two different minds I think it’s telling you that she’s developing a second persona.
@@DanMurrellMovies Sorta like D.I.D. maybe? Two separate entities that share Something™(in this case, a consciousness, not a body) and the other doesn't necessarily have memories from when the other is "in control."

As I mentioned before, visually it is not much different than Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse. If you can handle that, you should be able to handle most of this. It's kind of cartoony because of the lighting. Sure, the context is different but, it really isn't that bad in my opinion. EDIT: Someone below mentioned "Requiem for a Dream"...see, I would argue that that movie is MUCH WORSE than The Substance (for comparison).
Got to see it tonight, I gotta say, top contender for best film of 2024 imo. Loved it !!!!!!! It wasn't afraid to go there and beyond, fearless, and my fav part, it wasn't afraid to inject belly aching comedy throughout
Wow, just watched it.The nods to Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch, Tarantino and movies like 2001, the Shining, Alien, Eraserhead, the Fly, and so much more.Clearly exposing the vanity of Holywood and the substances they use to stay young.Demi Moore gained my respect for taking on such a brave role.If you have not seen The Shining, Eraserhead, 2001 and Pulp Fiction you will miss the nods to all those movies and more. Its way more clever than what your giving it credit for.Its a metaphor for humanities efforts to fight aging and also the damage you can do to yourself by taking medicine or medical procedures. This move is extreme and so clever. Is it a comedy or tragic horror. This director who made this knows the history of cinema and the cinematography is incredible.I give it a 8.5 out of 10.LOVED THIS MOVIE.
The film constantly reinforces that the sexualization is as seen through her own eyes so the take that this is seen through the male gaze falls pretty flat. Its her internalized misogyny thats the center of her conflict. The men paved the road with their lustful wants. She chose to drive on it. And the film holds her accountable for that. Its why the film punishes both of the Hers. Its not the male gaze that we the viewer see objectifying her. We dont need the middle man. The men just verbally overtly do it. No the gaze is hers. Its why half the film is seen through a mirror. Society, and the studios, are held accountable too. Them having her blood rain on them is a specific visual metophor. But its the whole crowd. Not just the executives. The spectators are held to the same level of accountability. And not simply men. Its even the little girls who emulate her. No one gets a pass. But she is held to the highest and thats why she suffers the most. The game rotten but she didnt have to play it. And thats a bold statement in 2024. Personal accountability is pretty old fashioned these days...no wonder you got distracted by "the male gaze." Its the easy critique and wouldve been a much easier, and safer, film. Thankfully the film was more thoughtful and more daring than this.
Highly anticipated and definitely delivered. Coralie Fargeat is a force to be reckoned with. Amazing performances and barely felt the run time. Regardless if you respect the film or not, you will walk out having seen something not put to film this year.

This movie is CAMP AF. This is my favorite movie of the year hands down. It’s gross but it’s so deep. There’s so much to unpack here. It’s edited incredibly. To explain the plot is to give away so much. It’s better to know as little as possible. Demi Moore is absolutely incredible. Margaret Qualley is electric. She should be the next Wonder Woman. Cast her now!!!
I thought this was one of the most insane movies I have ever seen! That being said, I absolutely loved it! I didn’t know what to expect and I wasn’t disappointed! I think it’s one of my favorite films of the year and Demi Moore and Margaret Qualey were amazing!
It's an actual theme that has to be discussed with spoilers!! Dennis Quaid is sooo underrated actor. He is great!! I felt so sad for the character during the whole movie
Goddamn, I LOVE this movie so much! To me it was absolutely perfect. It's wierd, messed up, beautiful, sad and actually funny at times. To make perfect use of all those emotions in one film is really good work. Everyone involved with making this movie should hold their head high and be proud.
Imagine an ending where everything was nothing more than a coma "dream" due to the car accident, where in the end she wakes up giving her a second chance to value the beauty he has and enjoy life … Much better ending giving a life lesson
this movie genre is absolutely not my thing but I watched it because I always thought of Demi Moore to be a highly gifted actress. Her performance in this movie blew me away. To me, it's so honest, pure, vulnerable, sad and full of wisdom and truths. Oscar worthy acting.
Saw it last night. I loved it. The actors did a great job and the director is one to keep up with, Can't wait to see her next one and I just ordered Revenge to see her first one.
I saw tonight, and was absolutely suprised, shocked, but LOVED IT!! I really hope people get out and see this unusually fabulous movie with Demi Moore absolutely shining as the great actress she is.
This is the first DM video I've watched in years. since shortly after you departed Screen Junkies. Sorry. I already saw the movie and thoroughly enjoyed your review. Lots of comments echoed my own thoughts and had me laughing out loud. Good to see you again. Subscribed.
Best Actress for Demi Moore! What a powerful performance, and I think Margaret should also contend for Best Supporting Actress....this is a new cult classic!!!
Demi Moore blew me away. The scene of her trying to get ready for her date but ultimately spiraling into being unable to leave the house was one of the most upsetting moments in the movie for me - one full of crazy and grotesque body horror at that.
Quaid was PHENOMENAL in this movie, just his little parts. That scene where Sue is mentally (and physically) breaking down before the New Years ball, the way he says "pretty girls should always smile!", the inflection on 'always smile', it wasn't a suggestion, but a command, beneath the guise of his *own* fake smile. Outside of the blood bath scene at the theater (which I get is probably a metaphor for her getting back at those who used her), this movie is a fantastic 9/10. Had anxiety through the entire movie. Is Hollywood back at fresh content? Would love to hear some thoughts.
As a person in showbiz, this movie experience made me feel weak and it made me rethink my career path. When the movie ended, I felt like I had just donated blood.
I first became aware of Qualley in Kojima's Death Stranding, the crazy dancer in Spike Jonze perfume ad and Fosse/Verdon. She's earned her indie credentials and interested to see what she'll do next. I will say this film starts VERY arthouse, but the third act is pure joyous bonkers Screaming Mad George territory 😄
I went to see this movie on a whim, I hadn’t read reviews or seen the trailer. Let’s just say this movie shocked me and left me completely speechless. Having no preparation to see a movie this grotesque was, in a sort of traumatizing way, the perfect way to go.
If Moore doesn't get a Best Actress nomination, all it does is emphasize the very point the movie is making. Personally, I think Qualley (especially) and Quaid should also get Best Supporting nominations too, but if either get nominations without Moore getting one then there's something seriously wrong with the awards voters. Last year I could actually make a case for Robbie not getting a nomination for Barbie because quite honestly the Best Actress category was absolutely stacked. Moore's performance, however, is the best performance I've seen in quite some time; absolutely outstanding.
I haven’t seen the movie yet but can you clarify one thing for me. When the “other body” is walking around, the younger one, is it the same brain that’s being shared, or is the real person just completely unconscious and have no idea what’s happening while they aren’t the active one? Like when the real one wakes up do they know what’s happened?
@@Moobeushonestly, it’s kind of a bit of both. Like after a night of heavy drinking and looking back the next day being pissed at yourself for doing/saying stupid shit and potentially getting yourself into trouble. You might not remember it all clearly, but it was still the same you
The "Gaze," as you called it, the way we watch the bright scenes with Sue that are very flashy and sexual, made me feel nervous and uncomfortable, obviously the point, and it's done so well. Seeing this woman birthed out of another's back and walking around taking her seat to live a more fulfilling life with such provocativeness was for me the true horror and unease in this film and they knocked it out of the park.
Also, I want to point out, I wish we had more horror films like this and Midsommar. So many films are dark and gritty. I love the change in style of horror being out in the open with bright colors that resemble or exaggerate everyday life. It introduces the possibility of what sacred us the most doesn't hide in the dark but in the light and around us in our everyday life, making us feel more vulnerable and thus, more terrified. I want more of that.
The only thing that will stop this from winning best film, director, actress, make up etc…etc… at every awards ceremony is the fact that it’s a body horror flick 🤔 it’s unbelievable, and I can’t remember the last time a film left such an impression on me a whole week after seeing it 😬 brilliant filmmaking
Toni Collette have the best performance in 2018 and got snubbed because she was in a horror film. The Oscars don’t really have much credibility anymore because of how they exclude certain genres regardless of the quality of the film…

Saw this yesterday night, and it was amazing, the gradual absurdity just kept me on my toes and essentially gave me what i wanted by the end. One of my favorite horror films this year by far!
10/10
Well said, Requiem for a Dream meets The Fly meets Barbie. And then cranked to 111.
I'm glad to hear you liked it. You and Jeremy Jahns are my two go-to reviewers that I respect and trust the most.
I saw the trailer pop up on my feed the other day, that alone just gave off a sense of discomfort and I was hooked… watching the film today I was completely blown away. I have no words for it, one of the craziest films I’ve seen.
Sounds a bit like 2016 "The Neon Demon" (Which I thought was great )...... Guess I should go see The Substance. Thanks Dan 🙂
I definitely got Neon Demon vibes! It's a decent measure of if you'll enjoy it.
I didn’t think that they didn’t have the same memories. I thought Elizabeth was clearly in Sue’s mind while Sue was activated
I love that it's basically a modern, crazy remake of Death Becomes Her. Even the ending is quite similar.
Margaret Qualley is actress Andie McDowell's daughter.
She is but she's not a nepo baby. I was skeptical at first but the girl is a better actress than her mom !
@@bo2720 Being the daughter of a famous actress is the definition of nepo baby.
@@andlowrider No. Achieving fame because of your parent's fame is the the definition of nepo baby. Whether she is a nepo baby or not is debatable but one thing that isn't is her obvious talent as an actress
@@andlowrider Agreed. No matter how good they are or what they do to earn their parts, children of famous actors only get the opportunity of because of who their parents are.
@@andlowrider Yes you are right. I stand corrected! I will say the term implies there is no individual talent or merit. It's been the case with many nepo babies. But she's actually talented on her own, and thats what I do respect is what I mean to say.
Loved the polarized recommendation outcomes you described!😂
I LOVED this film. The audience was incredibly respectful even though I thought it would've been kinda fun if we were all reacting. I can't wait to see this again. Can't believe this film was made with such a recognizable star.
I wouldn't watch it, body horror isn't for me, but I'm glad it got made.
Normally, I would have passed on this one, but now I’m really intrigued. Thanks, Dan!
“…. Seen through the eyes of Society.” Nice shout out to Brian Yuzna, intentional or not.
Seeing it tomorrow, and I can’t wait!
Ooooh, intriguing premise! I hope it does well in the box office.
well*
This movie is a flash bang stun grenade. Wild.
Just saw it tonight. Loved it. Thank you for the recommendation Dan. Did not disappoint.
Not divisive in the slightest. Some people just have bad taste but they are in the minority
@creepycutieeee5332 That ending had Freddy Krueger vibes LOL!🎩🧤🧣🙆
I have watched it in Moscow tonight and it is absolutely about experience and feeling, not about pleasure of watching.. Totally would recommend it to people, who are more about art
The substance is a great homage to 3 greatest horror films of all time: Jekyll and Hyde meets The Fly with Carrie at the end! The blood splatter scene on the audience 😂
This is brilliant and that third act. Wow. Loved this. The cinema sound is vital to this. That squishy audio work. 10/10
Kind of wild that we got multiple See It Now movies in September. Glad Dan is here to highlight them.
I just left the theater after watching/experiencing The Substance and I gotta say .... I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT !!!! Definitely in my Top 10 of the year
I think they do have the memories of the other self. They are one person and one mind. The thing is as the movie progresses the protagonist dissociates the two identities and starts thinking of them as seperate. Almost in the same sense of how when you do something stupid when you are younger, you can betrate your own behavior.
I´m a Coralie fan already, gonna watch "Revenge" ASAP.
I agree that the two are one person - but I think it's clear that neither of them remembers what the other one has done when they wake up.
Yes it was made very clear they share the same consciousness.
It makes no sense though. If they are one person, how does old her watch the young her live on tv? And the other stuff that happens later makes even less sense. No logic
as a filmmaker this is the best film I have ever seen. the pacing, the script, the edge of ur seat, the titling, the closeups, the concept, the editing, everything 10/10. This movie was absolutely amazing. Last scene had me in shock and I absolutely loved it. Greatest film of the year. I envy seeing it for the first time.
Please tell me the ending. I’m not gonna go to see it
@ watch it when it’s available to stream. I can’t do that it’s not even describable u would have to se it
@@raeisland2963 I don’t even know how to stream and I won’t. Can you just explain what’s “ shocking”. Line, is it a dream? Did Demi die? What is the ending?
@ then you don’t want to know. I’m not telling you. Go find a spoiler video the
@ there are none
Visual masterpiece and very intense
Just saw this. I was speechless at the end. Just complete WTF. Was wondering several times if there was more or it was over...but nope another insane crazy level was reached. The "monstro" reveal was like someone was messing with my brain. Couldn't help but laughing but at the same time intensely disgusting. This movie a masterpiece.
I'm not into body horror, I may have to wait until I can pause and gather the courage to continue.
It’s honestly a rough watch in that regard, I love practical effects and have a strong ability to rationalize it as fake in real time, but this one had some grrrroooss stuff in it I had to watch through my fingers
If you're not into body horror you should honestly wait
As I mentioned before, visually it is not much different than Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse. If you can handle that, you should be able to handle most of this. It's kind of cartoony because of the lighting. Sure, the context is different but, it really isn't that bad in my opinion.
EDIT: Someone below mentioned "Requiem for a Dream"...see, I would argue that that movie is MUCH WORSE than The Substance (for comparison).
@@69johndz Okay, so it’s as scary as Beetlejuice 2 but not as scary as requiem for a dream? What? Lol
@@botanicus2921 No...I said that Requiem is an example of much worse body horror. I think Requiem is legit disturbing, lol.
I saw the trailer for this in theatre. My jaw dropped and looked at my wife in silence. I have to see this movie..
Don’t waste your time
The film constantly reinforces that the sexualization is as seen through her own eyes so the take that this is seen through the male gaze falls pretty flat.
Yeps. And I loved that the ONLY time she's happy and smiles is at the very end when Elizabeth has completely shed her physical body.
@@interdimensionalsteve8172 excellent observation
Highly anticipated and definitely delivered. Coralie Fargeat is a force to be reckoned with. Amazing performances and barely felt the run time. Regardless if you respect the film or not, you will walk out having seen something not put to film this year.
I was very indifferent bec I loved everything till that last 30 mins. “3 months later” was when the film dropped off for me. Not that I hated it but just didn’t fully work for me
This movie was like if John Waters collaborated with Troma. And I love it.
🤣
That Mando ad was more body horror than the movie.
I just got finished watching it and I loved it. I think she should win an Academy award for this performance that’s I’ll get the movie was.
I saw it yesterday and it's just fabulous, I was totally gripped from start to finish.
OMG!!! This movie once seen you will never forget it! It’s a mixture of different movies, BUT that last 15 - 20 minutes is absolutely insane 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Can you tell me the end bc I don’t want to see it. I don’t care about spoilers
The substance is the perfect blend of Neon Demon + Requiem for a Dream on a Max Speed
This move was amazing, i was sold on the concept; went in blind and I was shocked 😮 LOVED IT
Shocked why? I’m not gonna see it so please tell me the gist and the enfing
Imagine an ending where everything was nothing more than a coma "dream" due to the car accident, where in the end she wakes up giving her a second chance to value the beauty he has and enjoy life …
Much better ending giving a life lesson
@ bruhh
@ brilliant response
Such a lazy ending, it was all just a dream
@@carlosramos3890 lazy was the shit end thei did.. no sence thoo...
An amazing shared experience. It’s really hard to watch but worth it! See it in the theater with other ppl.
Saw this last night and was blown away, truly the craziest movie I have ever seen!
this movie genre is absolutely not my thing but I watched it because I always thought of Demi Moore to be a highly gifted actress.
Fabulous? Really?
@@Ashley-os1ce Genius!
terror giggling. That's the term I came up with for how I was acting for the last act of this film.
This is the first DM video I've watched in years. since shortly after you departed Screen Junkies. Sorry. I already saw the movie and thoroughly enjoyed your review. Lots of comments echoed my own thoughts and had me laughing out loud. Good to see you again.
Subscribed.
That was harder to watch than any Saw movie.
I haven't felt this way since Requiem for a Dream
Best Actress for Demi Moore! What a powerful performance, and I think Margaret should also contend for Best Supporting Actress....this is a new cult classic!!!
So Demi Moore is the next snub a la Toni Collette/Hereditary?
This is what i mean when i say i want films to be experimental events.
Demi Moore blew me away. The scene of her trying to get ready for her date but ultimately spiraling into being unable to leave the house was one of the most upsetting moments in the movie for me - one full of crazy and grotesque body horror at that.
Bring your MANDO with you into the cinema theatre!!!
We have so many personalities.
We need to respect the balance of everything.
We Are Just One
As a person in showbiz, this movie experience made me feel weak and it made me rethink my career path. When the movie ended, I felt like I had just donated blood.
I first became aware of Qualley in Kojima's Death Stranding, the crazy dancer in Spike Jonze perfume ad and Fosse/Verdon. She's earned her indie credentials and interested to see what she'll do next. I will say this film starts VERY arthouse, but the third act is pure joyous bonkers Screaming Mad George territory 😄
It was not bad not good just Ok, and accept for Demi Moore who kills it as usual. Your right it is a messed up movie lmao
Saw it last night.... bonkers, imaginative...
I loved Revenge and I'm glad her followup is this mindblowing.
You might not remember it all clearly, but it was still the same you
This movie was wild and I left the theater with no words
It’s one of the best things I’ve ever seen in my life. Worthy of being called a masterpiece. For what it sets out to achieve, it’s near perfection.
