[SPOILERS] My stomach sank when I realised what Sue was going to do on the night of the show in using the activator serum but Coralie explaining is great. It was an oddly tender and sad moment of that being accepting itself in contrast to the earlier scene where Elizabeth can't bring herself to leave the apartment. That and the cries of "its me!" to the audience.
Yes funny it’s about female beauty, society gaze, and both actresses wearing high heels and uncomfortable outfit… given the topic of the film I would have said: “to hell I’ll wear flat and long dress”
Exactly, its like they completely forgot what the movie was about : don't bend over society expectations. The fact that they still wear uncomfortable shoes shows that the problem is not coming only from men, but also from themselves ! It mades the film even more relevant

You MUST see Coralie's previous film, Revenge. Where The Substance focuses on "internal" violence against women, Revenge focuses on external violence on women. Both equally stellar feminist masterpieces.
Then you should look more Cronenberg (dad and son) movies, its basically the matrix to this film. Antiviral, Naked Lunch, Dead Ringers, Crimes of the future... a lot gems on their filmography even if it aged poorly

It is not feminist movie! It is movie about corporative hysteria of youth no mater what and people who no mater what try to be that because of there insecurity and weakness. They fall for outlook instead of soul search in themselves. The movie is about how big aggression some do to themselves for not loving themselves. She literally saying that at the end of the movie. Message is wonderful, we should all first search love for ourselves in ourselves, and for that we have to keep our untouched pure soul as a portal which we are all connected to each other and the Universe. We really live in Matrix so we have to brake free from it. We are much more then just physical good look. That is why this movie is a masterpiece, because it is not only women story it’s story of aggression on human beings.

Outstanding film. Watched 2 nights in a row just so I could expose it to another friend and because I couldn’t get it out of my head. Also the practical effects were so insane. Nothing ever felt forced or out of line in the film for something that becomes so unhinged by the end. Sound design, acting, cinematography…honestly Masterful

I think it might at least get nominated for best screenplay or best make up. At least I’m hoping. But yeah horror is always skipped at the Oscar’s. Maybe Demi can avenge Toni Colette not getting one from hereditary
This is the best body horror movie since The Fly. Even In the age of digital CGI and AI, nothing makes a more impactful presence than practical effects. I am so glad the crew decides to adopt practical effects over fake digital. It really does makes a difference.
I went to several movies at this year's TIFF, and in everyone, all members had chairs. Even Denzel Washington asked for more chairs to bring more people of the Piano Lesson crew. I don't know why it didn't happen here :( I wish I could have seen the Substance, but I didn't find tickets :(
I just saw this fim here on mexico city and the whole theare was pack!!!! it was crazy to experience with everyone and even the people who worked there like people from the cleaning stuff and the end of the film there were also talking about !!!! it was crazy

Oh heck no. That was the craziest, over the top ending I’ve seen in years. The only movie I can think of that has a similar vibe to this in many ways is American Paycho, which is my all time favorite movie.
that ending was so fucking satisfying. I don’t think there was any other way to write it. The director has said that she wanted the end to be so cartoonish and over the top because she wanted to represent the ridiculousness but also the violence that is behind a woman’s internal conflict with her physical self and the worth she applies to it. Because it’s ridiculous when you break down these beauty standards but it doesn’t stop people from literally slicing off their skin and fat and sucking things out of their body or starving themselves for these standards. The blood pouring out onto everyone in such an overstated silly way was such a beautiful representation of the silliness and horror of it all and that we all have the blood on our hands.

The trailer uses the “come hither” body close ups, that have been exploited by filmmakers for at least a century: same exploitation-different film. The ‘Revenge’ film was simply a pretty girl running around in her underwear - it said less than nothing about rape or about true love.
The body close ups are literally to show the point? Both characters are shown naked, Sure, but for Sue, they wanted to frame for body in a objectifing way, because that's the point, they see her as an object, she is literal eye candy, and the way they shot her body, in and out of the movie, reflects that, unlike when we see Elizabeth, being completely limp on the ground, while the camera makes sure to capture the "flawed" texture of the skin, most of shots of Elizabeth are very "raw" looking, none are meant to frame her body in a flatering way, there's no glamourization of her naked body, and that's also purposeful, It's meant to show contrast on how those two womans are viewed by the world around them, Sue is desired by the industry, while Elizabeth is not, well, at least that's what i got anyway lol
I personally felt disgusted over all of the closeups. And after so long it’s just so ridiculous you could laugh. Which is also the point. If you leave the movie just feeling horny, you didn’t get it.

It focused on her own ideas of what it meant to move in the world as someone who hated herself. Pretty unique in that way honestly.
