Jay Nelson's travel micro-campers: from bike home to tiny boat

- "I don't know if I could have a car without a bed in it." San Francisco Jay Nelson has put beds into nearly every vehicle he's ever owned, including a semi-totalled Honda Civic (bought for $200) and a tiny rowboat (found on craigslist).
He's even made a moped into a camper, but his most impressive podmobile is the electric camper bike he built from scratch using parts "you can find at a hardware store".
He bought the PVC pipe chassis online, along with an electric motor (he discarded his initial pedal-powered design because of the San Francisco hills) and began to build the vehicle in his driveway.
He calls his tiny mobile home the Golden Gate and with an electric motor range of 10 miles, it can go basically anywhere within San Francisco (7 x 7 square miles) at a top speed of 20mph.

Boston Whalers are unsinkable! I will never forget the commercial where they cut a 14ft in half and it still stayed afloat!
Brings back such good childhood memories of Jamaica Bay, Rockaway Beach Queens NY!
Jay's Honda Civic camper was a truly inspirational design which maximised the habitation module interior space without overloading the car with a heavy structure.
Human beings can be awesome! I would love to live on a planet full of free & sovereign, creative humans!
Clever work on those windows... he's definitely thinking outside of the box... impressive... even if the range is walking distance!
Don't apologize for what you are building, you are completing "Proof of Concept" designs. I have built many (11 two, three and four wheel electric bike designs), they don't always look great, but they do perform well. Keep up the great work.
Very cool, this dude's quite inspiring. I wish I had as much time on my hands as he appears to have. Another great video Kirsten enjoy your work as well. Thanks for sharing.
UA-cam is so much more interesting than TV when you can see stuff like this.
This is, like, you know, like, an accident, like you know, waiting to happen.
Kirsten, you find quite possibly the most interesting people in the world. What a cool guy!!
Lots of good energy. I'm also showing this video to my two daughters.
Both of my girls (11 and 6) said 'That's cool, I wanna see another one'... these videos are quite inspirational and informative. Thank you
Wow, those designs are absolutely fantastic. Those faceted windows look amazing. I also quite like the idea of calling them crystal windows, sounds nicer.
Looking forward to see a followup on that new project.
love it! and the study case is brilliant.
Thanks for sharing your unique concepts... Ignore the catty-comments... You know the importance of your vision ... And your designs have a place on the horizon !
Have a great weekend and God bless !
Artsy, and some of the ideas are quite clever! I like!
❤ this guy's "beginner mind" energy!
I think this guy is related to Willy Wonka,,,
Love the creativity.
Love the design!
This is my favourite enclosed e-bike yet!! I'm thinking that body made out of rigid foam board would be fairly easy to do without a frame, especially with the fibreglass encasing it, and provide a fair amount of insulation here in Canada. Plus it would give me plenty of room for a large battery bank and solar panels.
