Tiny matchbox apartment hides closet & bathtub in drawers

- Micro-apartments are common in historically dense cities like Paris and Barcelona, but architect Valentina Maini wasn't interested in typical small space solutions like lofted sleeping quarters or murphy beds. She wanted her 25 square meter home (269 square feet) to look a bit more conventional, but to stack functions.
She hired a carpenter to create a dining table that slides over a matching bench to create more room for guests (she's had 20 over for wine and cheese). She didn't stop there. The bench also slides to reveal a full-sized bathtub: her micro-spa. Valentina filled her need for leg-less chairs using traditional zen tatami chairs that can be placed above her bathtub/bench for eating or reading or removed for bath hour (or used to create a viewing lounge outside her balcony window).
Not interested in the daily work involved in a transforming bed, Valentina simply raised her mattress a few extra feet and set to work creating a closet below. Recycling three large cabinets from her former workplace (her tiny pad is now also her home office), she created sliding drawers for clothing that tuck within sliding drawers for the cabinets that all tuck neatly beneath her sleeping quarters (though if she'd had 20 centimeters more in height she would have created a hanging closet within the cabinets).

My God, she’s truly an excellent designer.
"Essential freedom. What you have is inside you not outside " I love this womans perspective.
Once it is inside you ,you take ownership .

@KStar nothing, I actually think she's a very smart woman, I'd love to see her not smoking
This lady is really smart and creative. I am lacking the visionary gene, so I admire people like her.
Nakidz she’s smart cause you think she’s smart lolb
Nakidz. I agree she's smart. Intelligence comes in all forms.
@@BarryaLLen-ik8bq She's an architect. What do you do?
You have that too, it's just burried deep within you 😊
Nah she’s a smoker...
I think it would be depressing without the wall of windows & terrace- they are both amazing. Use of space is wonderful
Such smart ideas
So clever. She got me at the bathtub! Such personal touch.
+On Garn Me too! Now I want one too!
And what will get HER, are those electrical outlets right next to that bathtub (4:22) :P
YES, love the chance to soak in an honest to deity TUB. If you're the only person living in this space, there's no reason NOT to have a bathtub right out in the middle of the living space. If you have guests, transform it into a seating area, If you're alone, wallow away, bath brush and all.
What an amazing luxury to have a tub surrounded by the things you love! Books, the square outside the window, all cozy ;o)
True but what about her cooking place kitchen
This is super clever and really well thought out.
She basically wanted a great view, but had to compromise on space.
Which she then optimised.
Couldn't be better.
It's like she came for the VIEW... and stayed for the Tub. LOL. Good Job!
"I think it's an old human thing: refuge. You have a small space and you can control everything when you are inside, feeling very safe, in a way. It's a sense of freedom."
Myriam Cliche I've just discovered this channel and the whole idea of living in a small space, which is not for me at all, but I'm amazed at what people can achieve in the space they have. Today I thought about it some more and I feel like its almost like reverting back to childhood. Having a cubby house, a tree house, or even a small tent in the backyard to sleep in once in a while was always fun for me and my siblings (I'm one of five) Perhaps when we were younger we were on to something, but we grow up thinking more is better.
I loved the way she expressed that!
"The heart understands what the mind cannot describe"*, but you described this perfectly!
*I don't know who said this, but I can't take credit for it.
@@jamiepage2733 thank you! Now i know ;o)
Yes!!! That is a brilliant way of describing it... Love it 💖💞💖💞💖
Maybe it’s just me but I’m in a constant state of wanting a small cosy home but also wanting a HUGE ASS mansion
Lol, time share! Find a group of like minded, a delapitdated estate and restore on shares.
Older houses should render many spaces of servant quarters and other such space to be converted to micro apts. Larger formal rooms could then be restored for ??
@Maria Machado. HEY YOU!!! GIVE ME BACK MY BRAIN😄!!! But Yeah! Welcome to my torment😁!
Hyman O'Cohann zoning laws in most places prohibit that
maria machado . Any time you have no desire and. Don’t want ,you are dead 💀. .WANT , means you are young have hope and you alive .from the bottom of my heart ❤️ hope U will get your mansion.
You confused 🤣🤣. Get something in between
"What you have is inside you, not outside." Best advice of all time!!
That's what the elites tell the poor to believe

👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
She talks a lot about what she sees from different angles in the apartment. It's definitely important for you to be able to see things that you love, so what you have on the outside is important, too.
Anyone else wondering how she got all that stuff up those gnarly ass stairs lol
Terrace i think
I've seen people with these small apartments have a crane bring up the furniture through the terrace or a large window.
Xeno Foxx, very carefully.
Piece by piece think IKEA ;)the bath tub would have had to come through the terrace forsure
She seems french
When I saw the bathtub under the bench I flipped with joy😍 That is just wow. She really makes tiny living spaces efficient.
Don't you have a giant mansion with a Roman pool? lol
Come on really how many times do you think she gets in and out that bath. You know that bath aint getting used.
I wish we’d seen more of the terrace. Spent a good 3 minutes just showing her move the table. I wanted to see that space!!
The raised bed storage is brilliant. So much better than the usual solution of a few boxes, or a heavy lift up mattress that only provides a fraction of this amount of space. The room under that bed must be equivalent to three or more large double wardrobes. Genius.
A lot of beds you can get drawer frames for.
Undoubtedly one of the best tiny apartments ever. I've watched this multiple times, and that's rare for me. The bathtub is so ingenious.
this apartment looks really airy, I would have loved to have seen the terrace though!
Unique storage! & the Japanese chairs, nice touch
You look young for someone born in 77
Awesome 👍
@Creative Revival The terrace, not the cute balcony, was full of plants. Between 1:06 and 1:14 you get a small glimpse of it. Wish they gave us a better view of it.
Question Everything exactly my thoughts 😁
I love how she uses this space. I really think the chairs and tub are so creative and dividing the bed space so you cannot are it plus all the storage. Bravo!!!
Right when she went to the balcony and mentioned, to get some air, I felt a nice breezy wind and felt like I was at a park.... such a nice looking apartment
I got the same feeling too
S.A Masquerade nice 😌
Same.
And the VIEW! .. Lovin it.
Same!
The huge cross ventilation in such a small space is a LUXURY. BRAVO! 👏🏽👌🏽
The view from the balcony window is spectacular! What a beautiful square! I love the apartment. Very efficient design.
I think this lady has some great ideas for Micro living. The drawer within a drawer is genius.
Has it occurred to anyone that is calling the bookshelves a waste of space that she works from home and those books are necessary resources intended for research, not novels (and if they are novels why shouldn't she surround herself with what she loves)? And to those who prefer ebooks, she may not have an ereader, or she may have had the majority of her library before getting one. Replacing all those books with digital copies, assuming all those books are even available digitally, would be very expensive.
***** Plus, books are awesome and digital books, not so much.
I like both but digital books don't work well for research unless they are totally searchable. Plus, what's better than being surrounded by books? :)
if the books are her priority, why should anyone object to that lol it's obvious she's dedicated the space for it also i love books too and think they add a sense of home
Books are never a waste of space. People are stupid.
she’s surrounded by knowledge it’s the closet you could get in another’s brain
Been a fan of this channel for years. This was the first video I actually saw. And no matter how many apartments or houses I see, I keep coming back to this one. For some reason I'm just so attracted to location, the simplicity, the comfort level, the way the bed is, and the terrace (which you could have showed us more of) . Oh, I can't forget the bathtub! I don't know what it is, but I just love this apartment!
I feel the same! I have re-visited this video so so many time. I absolutely love the bath/table, her bed/storage combo and her terrace. I have way less personal possessions than whats shown in this apt. and every time I see this home I marvel at the possibilities of what could be done with the space.
I like the bed and bathtub storage ideas in this video. I also like the Japanese chairs! But really, the bathtub/seating/table option is awesome.
I would put dry goods and shoes in the bathtub when not in use.
This is the most inventive use of space! She’s a genius. Bless her she loves her books, Imagine how much more space she would have if she used a kindle lol
hi all, thank you again to all that have sent me great messages!! my web @ the moment is down so is not possible to download the plans... i hope i'lle get back to that soon!!
I have watched this video so many times. It helps me dream about my favourite city. I can't wait to go back. Thank you for the inspiration!
your apartment is amazing, the terrase mmmmm. Do you still live there Valentina?
Valentina: It seems you can use the 'top' of the bathtub as a base to a bed; all it needs is a comfortable mattress:)
So cozy ❤️
where r u from plz
I saved this video and return to it again and again for inspiration in my own tiny space. I have about 15 more feet to work with than she did, and particularly find the bed with storage exciting because I am getting too old for a loft with many stairs, but I also like the fact that you can hide the bed in your living area. The fact that I already have the existing dressers is a plus. I have the tatami chairs which I hang up Shaker style on pegs when not in use. My grandkids love sitting on them while they play video games or watch a movie at my house.
I totally agree about Lofts. I have had 2 broken backs, plus other medical issues over the years and if I only had a loft... I could not have gone home. For me a bedroom area on the living level is an absolute MUST.
You don't think much about stairs until you can't STEP UP. sigh:::
she was very lucky to find the terrace there. it looks nice.
Love her ingenious space, function and aesthetic solutions. She freed herself and made a small comfortable sanctuary filled with culture and almost zero up keep to tie her down. Best small space I've seen, ever. Thank You!
This is the most real and creative small apartment I’ve seen. Without all the fake white walls. It’s so personal man.
Wow!!! it ends with her words, "what you have is inside you, not outside". Love it!
Among the dozens of videos I watched about simple living and tiny houses (many of which are provided by this beautiful channel ;) ) this continues to be one of my favourite. Valentina sei stata bravissima: complesso e semplice si fondono in un ambiente che trovo meravigliosamente confortevole e...spazioso! Il mio ideale di piccola casa/rifugio in cui non si rinuncia a nulla.
For all the people saying she still has too many books: ok, we have e-readers now but come on, books are the companions of a lifetime...I think she would like to have even more! And that's maybe my only doubt about tiny homes: lack of space for books!
my favourite too
Oh my! Who cares how many books she has! It's her life, her apartment, her choice. Too many people don't even know how to enjoy a book today, they are spoiled with computer/tv/phone screens.
Elizabeth Staeheli Exactly.
I couldn't agree more, especially about books. Everyone has preferences. I felt completely at home when I saw her bookshelves. So happy to see a furnished home 😄📚📚📑📒
People could easily add doors, roller blinds or art over bookshelves, but then you wouldn't see the books!
Talk about making the most out of what you have!! That was awesome! I would NEVER have guessed there was a tub in the middle of that room!
This is a great apartment. So bright and plenty of outdoor space. Does not seem small at all. Great use of space, especially the tub is just fantastic.
I really liked this home. I share her love of books and would not want to part with them. I love how she got so much functionality in such a small space. It's just brilliant.
This apartment is really really nice. Stairs are kinda hardcore, but apartment and all its fitted furniture is awesome use of space. One of the best I've seen on this channel so far. I wonder what was the cost of buying the place and furniture made for the place.
DentargPL I agree. This is the first video that I looked at and said, I could live there (if I were single)
@@dogie1070 the lady sounds Italian, though...
DentargPL Definitely not disability accessible!
The stairs.

I LOVE this space! I could absolutely, very easily live in a space like this, and I would take a bath every night!! Fabulous! Very well done! And how lucky to discover the terrace too!
Love the simplicity of the bathroom and brilliance of the table, chairs and tub. wonderful
I love her place! So small and personal. "A room without books, is like a body without a soul." She gets to live how she loves and I'm all for it! 😊
I love the clever furniture in her apartment. The bed and drawer system , the table and tatami chairs and the bathtub!! Wow , what a wonderful way to make the most of your space. Kirsten you have a wonderful job lol! Thank you for uploading all these videos , I've seen some really imaginative ways to live tiny :)
In videos like this one often finds rich people who do this as a challenge and not because they will live there. This lady is a breath of fresh air. She was financially restricted but she managed to get something so cute and special. She was also very clever with her design and that bathtub is genius idea.
Love the idea of the bath tub like that
And those Japanese chairs... So innovative
Such a nice space, and I love that she kept the tub!
Wow. So impressive. Really excellent space saving solutions. Valentina has made a very small space spacious, and that's down to her smarts. The bath was just great! Well done and thanks for sharing.
When 80% of your stuff is books, you don't need a lot more..
It's basically paradise
As long as there's a library nearby with books in English I'm happy
My eyesight has faded and the Joy of reading has become a memory
U-tube is becoming the sanctuary the library once was.
@@hymanocohann2698 you should look into apps like auidable or other book reading apps. Some there is some libraries that offer it free on apps or even on tape so long as you have a card to their library.
@Jude Fenwick that's why you can read on line or do e-books
I didn't see the bath tub coming ... :D
Nice sliding table concept!
Yes, the whole arrangement is brilliant. From the glass table to the zen tatami chairs, it is so well planned. I love how easily the bamboo furniture moves. It is so well-made too. This lady is a genius.
Despite the title?
The bathtub idea is so creative!!
I love the bed and the closet....the bathroom needs to be thought out better, but I adore the kitchen table and those Japanese chairs!!! But the best part of all is by far the bathtub!!!! Absolutely genius!!!!!I could easily live here....well done, BRAVO!!!!
I am not Neil , from Canada , This is brilliant this Lady is a genius !!! She should get an award for this design , I am very impressed , I absolutely love what you have done ! Incredibly inspiring !! Most efficient use of space I have ever seen , remarkably cozy , Thank you for sharing
Freaking awesome use of space. Genius.
I Love that space! It’s neat and clean and relaxing 😌 she has made, literally, the most and best of her living space. Awesome 👏🏼
I remember watching this when I was in high school and I was like “OMG I WANNA LIVE IN A PLACE LIKE THIS” I am now 24. I do not want to live in a place like this. BUT I still want a hidden soaking tub
Just the thought of having a tub inside your room is a really cool idea. I've only known hotels to do that.
Absolutely love your home. So quaint and unique. I have a small house and you are so right when you say it's what's inside you... I had big houses but I've got to be honest I'm happier in my little home. Less mess, less bills and more time outdoors.
Watched this video when it first was posted and cant get this apartment out of my head!!!... Soooo clever and as a book lover I like how they feature here , the high bed for messy people like me soo idealistic, the tatami chairs and of course the bathtub !!!
Same. Still one of the best I've seen today except those hideous stairs
The whole mindset is what is most attractive- the way of life- more inward value than external. Really love and appreciate this
I really love that she used bamboo. Made it personal and has a view. I couldn’t live without my books ( bookshelves) too. But I would really have liked to see the toilet ( bathroom) more and kitchen. My bed is also raised ( containers/ storage ) under and I have a balcony ( small). growing herbs and orchids. It’s expensive to live many places and using my imagination was key 🕊
This is genius!the bed, closet, kitchen table and seating, the tub and use of the balcony...just WOW.love the tiny wet area for the commode, shower, sink.this would totally work for me.nicely planned and executed use of space, not an inch wasted.
Great use of space. Really, this is brilliant. As human population goes up, and space decreases, this will be the new way of living. Humans think they need more space than they actually do.
Taking notes from her on bookshelf ideas. All those books...must feel like paradise!!!
great use of the space! I live in a tiny space myself, so this video is great inspiration ...I must say that everytime I read a comment about books being "way too many" or a "waiste of space", is like a knife going thru my heart...so glad I'm a babe from the 60's prior to the e-shit...
I like it! Clean lines, not too fussy. First time I'd like a small spot. Perfect! STURDY...EASY...YES!
maybe my favorite of all the tiny apartments/living quarters you've shown! I LOVE the chairs - must get some!
Beautiful and efficient! I love how she was able to work in so much space for her beloved book collection, it's clear she spent a lot of years and a lot of money acquiring them.
*This is cool....now if only we did something like this for the homeless, or even a little bigger, instead of charging crazy rents every month*
@@Ali-pb6jb not all communities allow them, it's a shame.
@@Ali-pb6jb not very many. :-(
@@Ali-pb6jb a lot of the tiny homes they actually charge for too
They can actually be really expensive to put together.
What a remarkable and brilliant use of space! Thanks for sharing! I am amazed that anyone would criticize this woman for having books. The accumulated knowledge and ideas of man is, to me, the only material thing worth having. They can take everything else from me but not my books. A society that does not prize books has already descended into savagery and a new Dark Age. Thank God for those of us who are like the Irish monks preserving precious legacies.
That bathtub idea is fabulous, love the whole apartment!
One of my favourites. Love all the books and the terrace.
I could live in that no problem. I really like the bed/storage thing, it's really smart. You can pull all of them out and have a nice workspace desk. And I like the fact that it has 2 rows of drawers so the things you don't need that often can be more at the back, so you don't need to pull the whole thing out.
If it was my, I wouldn't probably have a bath tub and I would make the bathroom a bit bigger.
If she had the bath tub in a bigger bathroom, then she'll probably won't be able to relax with a cup of wine looking to the view of the sky.
Watching this for the third time. It's my all-time favorite tiny apartment--such a clever use of space. The owner is extremely creative.
I'd love to have a home like that small but functional and surrounded by book shelves and books!
Wunderbar! So klug durchdacht und voller praktischer Überraschungen. Endlich mal eine kleine Wohnung mit Büchern !
Genius idea with the bathtub (and the chairs)! I wouldn't want to give up on a nice bath either :)
I absolutely love this apartment. She has everything she needs. But the tub...oh heck yeah! How can 406 people give this a thumbs down?! This is a great video. Thank you once again for sharing.
I adore this apartment!
I'm amazed on how people living in small spaces can be so creative in terms of using every inch of the space they have. Genius! 👍
Absolutely brilliant use of space!
Alas, too many people with closed minds would refuse to even try out such a small space... well, to each his/her own.
Brilliant!!! I love her view on life and how she created multiple views of the outside world from one tiny space!
7 years later, UA-cam recommended this video for me!! I am running out my quarantine video options 😂

I do indeed love the bed solution, the elevated space that's a bit separated from the rest of the place. Very cosy. And indeed, the rest of the room seems 'tidier', less crammed.
this channel is a hidden gem. thanks for your hard work
I love seeing the indulgent details in a micro space set up for long term living. All that book storage. Full bathtub. Those slinkies on the window sill!
I like her mobile chair and I like the spot where she can sit n watch people down there

7yrs later I'm still in awe of this video
She is brilliant! Love her innovtive designs! Having lived for years in Santa Fe, NM in a garage apartment (10 x 25), with traditional 'leg' furniture, I'm totally impressed with her use of space.
Really nice studio apartment, Valentina did well at buying it; whenever she decide to sell it she certainly won't have a problem since upgrading with the cool ideas she put into it. The narrow walk up is awful though. I wish she said how much she paid.
Very charming! Small places usually make me feel anxious. Even watching them on video. This apartment, by contrast, is very soothing. Such a relaxing, peaceful place!
Wow...this apt is amazing! What ingenuity! Spectacular!
I absolutely love the bed and storage underneath it. The bath and Japanese chairs. BRILLIANT.
That is heaven, i wish i could live there
This lady gets it! There are just some things that you don't want to tuck away in a tiny house and should have their own dedicated space (e.g. the bed) BUT you also don't want to feel like you're sleeping in the kitchen.
And that bathtub next to the balcony and window! How relaxing would that feel!
This is one of my favorite tiny spaces!
I am very impressed. I, too, need a bathtub and love the way she managed to have one in that very tiny space. Pure genius.
I love the space! I'll live there in a heart beat!
I'm just ever so thankful for a yard to go sit in during this lockdown. Can you imagine not having a yard to go out and enjoy the air but instead be stuck in a tiny place for months on end.
