Some of the people from the Legendary and infamous Dee Why Beach House took a very young me to The Royal Antler Narrabeen late 1979 to see a band called Midnight Oil.
I was already a music fan, but this opened my eyes to a new world of LIVE music. People were taking jugs of iced-water up to the stage and if memory is correct I think Peter Garrett poured one of them over his recently shaved head. Steam then came off his head. What a sight to see.
This venue had a part of its ceiling that opened up. I remember looking up at the Stars and the Stars on stage as well. Great place on The Northern Beaches of Sydney.
Midnight Oil are one of the best bands of all time.

Regarding the comment by Ulysses8765 this recording was 100% recorded live at the Royal Antler in Narrabeen 02 May 1980. This recording was taped live by the radio station Double J team and played on air. I personally recorded it off JJ at the time onto a cassette tape and still have it today 38 years later. Double J was way before the current station Triple J. In the recording Peter refers to a Malcom, this was the Prime Minister of the time Mr Malcom Fraser. Cheers Paul

This is why bands today can't write a song that stands the test of time, this is why musicians nowadays can't play anywhere near as flawless end efficient because back then you HAD to be able to play if you were going to be a recording artist, everything was recorded to tape in analog and mistakes stuck out like a sore thumb. Musicians were just so much better back then, they had to be.

What happens when a live band gives and gives to an audience and the fans give back just as hard year after year decade after decade
One big family singing along, dancing, sweating, smiling both band and fans have an understanding never let each other down.
The fans have recently spoken all over the world snapping up tickets to the "Great Circle tour" because every one knows Moginie Garrett Hillman Rotsey and Hirst will put on shows leaving every single punter with their jaw on the ground dying for more.

1980 I was 10 .. I would have to wait another 2yrs til my introduction to "The Oils" .. Living 3 hours from Melb, a visit to my best friends house had him drag me out to his older sister boyfriends Kingswood .. He was from Melb, and his wagon had mags, lowered and loud sound system installed. "Got this new album we've been play'n" as he pushed the cassette inside the slot, "have a listen to this" .. 10, 9, 8 .. 2, 1 wasn't a countdown, it was an epiphany. I stayed up one Saturday night when I was young around this time and saw some band I'd never heard of before called Midnight Oil playing at some place called The Royal Antler on Lee Simon's Nightmoves. The gig was awesome. It could have been this. Nightmoves would have a live set from a band every week, many of them Australian. At least that's what I remember. That show never gets mentioned like Countdown does as being influential. I discovered Midnight Oil, The Radiators etc on Nightmoves.

Was the original bassist still around for this gig?

      No
Andrew James had left only a couple of months before this gig
Not taking anything away from his replacement Peter Gifford
But Andrew James was a freak
If you listen to his contribution to the first 2 albums
      Especially the first album
      Well …

@@GilbertMcGovern-ys2ji But yes, "Bear" was very gifted. Imagine the course they may have taken if either he or Giff stayed, and there was no Bones
I believe Giffo may have been shoved, for want of a better word, for Bones, i maybe wrong
