Trailer Falls off Semi on Freeway!

- Trailer Falls off Semi on Freeway! Imaging driving down the freeway, then looking in your rear view mirror and seeing your trailer on the ground behind as you gain speed? Unfortunately, it does happen. Most of these are due to people not doing a tug test and dropping these in a yard or while leaving a facility. In cases like this one, sometimes it's just faulty equipment that you can't do anything about.
This driver immediately noticed his trailer fell off his tractor during traffic. We were called by CHP to respond to lift the trailer back up and set it onto the semi. After several unsuccessful coupling attempts, Alex realized that the issue must be with the 5th wheel plate on the tractor. Newer ones are electric, but sometimes these 5th wheel plates can get jammed.
Such as this case, where a faulty locking mechanism caused this trailer king pin to slide out during transit and fall. Luckily, no one was injured and no property damage (besides of course the trailer itself). Realistically this was the best case scenario for dropping a trailer on the freeway. The guys worked quick to clear the scene, and Rudy used his wrecker to pull the trailer to the shoulder to open up traffic.
From there, Coffee Joe arrived in our brand new 2024 Peterbilt tractor to transport the trailer back to our yard per the customer's request. So what do you guys think, unlucky or lucky driver? Sorry everyone, been so busy with that lithium battery explosion 2 day job and another huge rollover I didn't have time for a breakdown on this one. Still a cool video, what did everyone think?
Saw your footage and the trucks on abc news way over here in NYC! Crazy how your drone caught the initial explosion. Hope the drone is fine.
The one on the news ? You guys really do get all the crazy calls
I wondering were is breakdown, really enjoy that.
Shame you are very busy do understand❤
A good truck driver will always visually inspect that the king pin is locked in.. and do a simple tug test. This guy put everyones lives around him in danger. All bc he's lazy. Drivers should lose their CDL for accidents related to not doing a pre trip. Period.
You got that video up Josh
The highway patrol bato was doing everything possible to locate a sliver of shade from the Hulk!
I like this guy no showboating just gets the job done.
Nice job on battery seen your names on LA news great job
This is just my observation I could be wrong Josh if I am let me know. But judging the fact the driver could even back up straight to get under the trailer makes me wonder when he originally hooked it up he bent the coupler but it still held. Of course I’m sure he didn’t do a tug test but also didn’t check the coupler to make sure it fully locked to the king pin. If he would have done those steps in the first place when he hooked it up this could have been completely avoided. ALWAYS DO A TUG TEST AND CHECK THE COUPLER TO MAKE SURE IT FULLY LOCKED. It’s part of your inspection to make sure it’s locked.
I had a fifth wheel lock fail one me one time. Did a tug test pulled a trailer for about 5 mins through town multiple turns and it just let loose. This guy in this video I’m not sure about his experience lvl but mechanical failures do happen. I will never forget that day and I have done multiple tug tests from then on after hooking a trailer. Hasn’t happened since, that fifth wheel did get replaced after that.
@@SuperBobblehead77 that’s why I said that if he bent the coupler on the first hook up it still held but then going down the road it came undone.
@@laura_774 I was not disagreeing I just lost in my thoughts I agree with completely.
In Denmark there was a train accident on the Great Belt bridge 🌉 track, a half-empty trailer in a pocket car in the train luggage compartment broke free from the lock to the king pin in strong crosswind storm ,the trailer hit another passenger train where the side was torn up and people were killed/injured by it.
See the professor on the scene doing his smooth operation
I’m a retired truck driver drove truck for 49 years always did the tug test and I always got underneath with a flashlight to make sure that the jaws were closed on the fifth wheel never had a problem always do a visual
Trust me , it will still fail. I was in that situation once and i have had the fifth wheel lock and wouldn't release yup things do happen in the field
Alex is such a pro, and he hustles, with no wasted steps. The traffic coming so close made the hair on my arms stand up. That's dangerous work. Great video showing all the work required when the trailer landing gear is damaged.
This is clearly the driver's fault. He didn't confirm the fifth wheel was locked on the king pin. He needs to be retrained and retested to verify he fully understands how to line up, connect and confirm he is properly latched to his trailers
I didn’t think we would have a video since you’ve been super busy. This is definitely a bonus. That driver came too close. Can’t they open another lane??
Alex. another solid rescue! I'm just glad I wasn't behind that trailer when it came to a screeching halt! It's amazing how you guys can work two or three feet away from high speed traffic while nobody slows down! Great video!
Way to go Josh. I seen all the news stations give you credit for the lithium battery explosion video.
Your 35 ton driver that hook that trailer at such an angle with the chain all the weight will be pulling on on those pins in the cross bar or open the hooks on the receiver, should've gone farther back especially if was loaded.
Should have disqualified the fifth wheel immediately upon the first drop in which it could not be determined the exact fault or the fifth was found to be bad, however a fifth wheel failure is very rare if the first hook is properly confirmed. I work with a major carrier, if a driver drops a trailer it is an automatic disqualification of that driver. That is how rare equipment failures are...
Alex seem like a crazy set up….everyone was very fortunate on the highways that that trailer didn’t take anyone out!
If he can’t back under a trailer properly how in the he!! did he get a CDL??? Well, at least he’s not wearing flip flops!
Who’s the new driver ? Loving the breakdowns as always great Job Josh you always make these videos to perfection
Looks like the first guy could have done all that by him self. He hooked up and moved it anyways
I always look forward with enthusiasm to Alex's videos.
Is Truck 35 a 9055 50 ton?
Also, Truck 24 is beautiful!
Need put down some real cones the triangles can barely be seen
Driver missed the tug test on his pre trip. At least he had shoes on.
I Don't know how the driver of the truck got his CDL. Hmmm,
Classic steering wheel holder
It may be hard to believe. In the 70’s i worked at a freight company. We had a driver take a trailer from Montabello scale’s 10 freeway near Banning and dropped the trailer. Went out and inspected 5’th wheel and found no issues. Hooked to the truck and drove it back. 20:57
He lost it very far from pickup. So he probably had a gap from apron and fifth wheel plate. It will hold until it doesn’t. Good luck all.
That battery had an unwanted surprize
In Alberta nobody was respecting flashing yellows....a new law was passed that allowed flashing blue's with the yellow...gets peoples attention better.
First again! I love working night tours lol.
Edit: Josh, the breakdowns are cool but they’re a bonus, if you get slammed, you get slammed, they don’t have to come with every video, I’d like to think most of us your viewers understand and accept that.
Edit to add: per your question in the description, I think the driver was very lucky. Like you said Josh, sometimes mechanical equipment will fail and you wont know it until the next part happens, like in this case, lock failed and trailer fell off. I with only knowing what you told us, I don’t think the driver is at fault at all.
It'll be worth it just to show you guys how crazy that lithium battery explosion job was!
@@PepesTowingService I've seen it on instagram very exited for the video
@@PepesTowingServicebro I saw the short, and almost spit my coffee at my work computer. Here in nyc (dispatch for the fire dept) we get those calls allllll too frequently about the batteries burning. They burn out a store, or apartment or a house quick and easy, and those are just the small e-bike ones… your call was MASSIVE, damn lucky all that happened was blowing open doors and bulging out the can.
True Bro, nobody follows the move over law. Lost a good friend of the family to an idiot that didn't move over and hit and killed 5 people and 3 vehicles on highway construction
Hey Alex, I'm getting ready to watch the video, ya'll do an awesome job on all the recovery's & I really like big flipper
Highway patrol dude wanted to be a star in the video. Never seen one stand so close to the rig for so long.
Chiliwili back in action lol great video Josh as always from your number one fan ❤
Buenas noches, Alex, buen video, un gran trabajo , saludos, ❤ 👏👌💪🇪🇦
Alex great video! Thanks for sharing! Kevin
I love what you are doing mat and I love you trucks
Both drivers of those tractors were wearing headsets. Aren't they illegal? They block all surrounding noise? Great video as always.
Can only cover one ear.
Headsets are legal, provided they only cover one ear. The Pepe's drivers use headsets that cover both ears when they're working on towing - both for ear protection and communication.
60,000 I think he was over weight
Move over law is good if it's enforced
🤓🙋♂️❤👍
Well done Alex and team!
Great video Joshua
When he banged his head into that strap I was just going to say workers comp but you beat me to it LOL
👍👍👍👍👍
❤❤❤👍
Awesome job , being a former California resident a lot of other states don’t know how crazy the freeway s are 😱. I live in Missouri and it’s good to see mostly everyone move over, I know I ALWAYS DO!! And I use my signals for every turn , don’t know if that’s just a California thing 😵💫. Awesome video as usual, be safe out there and Great video . Peace Out ✌️
👍✌️
👍✌️😎
Great work Alex, the wrecker driver is new to me, he seems like another hard worker and a take charge, get r done kind of guy. Pepe’s workers all seem to really work together with ease to get the job done.
Just a note; never rely solely on the "tug test". Having done that, go under the trailer with a flashlight and visually inspect that the 5th wheel has properly closed around the neck of the kingpin (not the crown), that there is no space between the 5th wheel plates of the tractor and trailer, and that the tractor 5th wheel latch, a large pin that keeps the latch from moving, is closed. It sounds more complicated than it looks, but, it only takes a few seconds and it can save a driver from experiencing problems like this.
Good job, gotta love those speader bars
Josh, if I ever break down in LA, I'm having my company call you guys!!
Good job Alex lifting and trying to get it to hook up.
I really liked your teamwork in this video, just doing what needed to be done.
Saludos de Tijuana arturo padilla ei ales guasa
Very nice job guys again keep up the good work
Great job Alex and Rudy Java will do a great job too. 26:09
cool mate. they don't like slowing down.
Just have Java Joe do the breakdown!
U have an awesome crew
Great team work!
Surprised it wasnt a SWIFT Driver
I am beginning to think that dealers should throw in a backage (package) of marshmallows and a stick with all EV's. I wonder if the LI ion batteries might not be ready for prime time. Great job here with Alex and supporting cast. Lane opened quickly and careful care for the casualty. Thanks for posting, I can't imagine how you can keep up posting.
Statistically, ICE vehicles catch on fire a lot more than EVs, anywhere from 20x more to 80x more depending on which country you're looking at.
