- 1958 Gibson Les Paul Standard PAF Gold Top, Mahogany
Single cutaway solid body. This guitar is very similar to Dickey Betts 'Goldie'. One of the very early 1958 PAF Goldtops, this guitar weighs just 8.40 lbs. and has nice, fat nut width of just under 1 11/16 inches and a standard Gibson scale length of 24 3/4 inches. Solid mahogany body with a solid carved maple top. One-piece mahogany neck with a wonderful medium profile, and Brazilian rosewood fretboard with 22 original thin frets and inlaid pearl trapezoid (crown) position markers. Headstock with inlaid pearl "Gibson" logo and "Les Paul Model" silkscreened in gold. Two-layer (black on white) plastic truss-rod cover. The serial number "8 1791" is inked-on in black on the back of the headstock. The top of the guitar has single-ply cream binding and the fretboard has single-ply cream binding. Individual single-line Kluson Deluxe tuners with single-ring tulip-shaped Keystone plastic buttons (stamped on the underside "D-169400 PATENT NO."). Two PAF humbucker pickups (double-black) with outputs of 7.33k and 7.83k. Both pickups with the small rectangular black label on the underside with "Patent / Applied For" in gold lettering. The cream neck pickup mounting ring is stamped on the inside "MR491" and "M-69 7" and the cream bridge pickup mounting ring is stamped on the inside "MR490" and "M-69 8." Single-layer cream plastic pickguard. Four controls (two volume, two tone) on lower treble bout plus three-way pickup selector switch on upper bass bout. Gold plastic bell-shaped "Bell" knobs. The potentiometers are stamped "134 649 & 134 701" (Centralab December 1956 and January 1957). Two original "Bumble-Bee" capacitors. With the original black plastic control cavity plates. ABR-1 non-retainer Tune-O-Matic bridge with metal saddles and separate stud tailpiece.
This incredible guitar was re-finished by Tom Murphy in 1995.
This is one of the very last of the Les Paul Gold Tops, we have seen Gold Top serial No. "8 2700" and we know from Yasuhiko Iwanade's book The Beauty of the 'Burst that serial No. "8 3096" is a 'burst which is now owned by Slash. This guitar plays, sounds, and looks phenomenal, and is in exceptionally fine (9.00) condition. Housed in the original Gibson "Stone Case Co. Brooklyn N.Y.") brown five-latch hardshell case with pink plush lining (9.00). Included with the guitar is the original brown leather strap; the original Gibson folding hang tag with "Les Paul" stamped in blue; the original "Humbucking Pickup Adjustments" sheet; the original "Instructions Tune-O-Matic Bridge*" sheet, and also three original tags: "Sonomatic Strings", "Professionals Attention" and folding "Gibson Les Paul Model".
In all honesty I kinda forgot I was subscribed to this channel
same, was hoping (in vain) that Phil X would be hosting...
yea me to
Snap! 😂
Here in the backroom of ,..oh wait they're closed monday's,,hey Andrew, how's bass?
Phil doesnt want to do the show anymore.
Just to be clear, Phil left the show over two years ago, we didn't "Replace" him... we can only move forward and try to bring you more great guitars and great players to show them to you. The whole point of the show is to be able hear real guitars played by real players. We're so happy to have had so much success, and Phil is a huge part of that. We plan to continue to bring you videos. Michael Grant stepped in to a tough gig with some of you, but he's up to the challenge and does an incredible job in the upcoming videos. THANK YOU FOR STICKING WITH US!!
Michael Grant is awesome I am so glad that he is the new man to demonstrate these guitars a very underrated player
I’m just glad the channel is continuing 🤙🤘
Hi Staff FA, what is the song at the beginning?
thanks frettedamericana for more videos and Michael grant sounds like he's got the goods, phil, jared, michael all rock in there own style who the hell couldn't appreciate that,i love phil like the next guy but am glad for the change cheers from new zealand
Well put
Any Fretted Americana is good Fretted Americana. WELCOME BACK.
Why are people hating on this dude? He did a good job. Let him settle in, then have an opinion
Going to be honest, I subscribed because of PhilX
Phil doesnt want to do the show anymore
same here
Give this guy a fair shake guys, it’s not his fault Phil left 🤙 I for one am gonna take this as a good thing we get to seeing and hearing more rad guitars and gear that many of us will never have the pleasure of owning or even playing 🤘🤙
Honestly I think Michael is doing an awesome job. He's delving in to the guitar's responsiveness to dynamics and different situations and is actually letting us hear the guitar, more that Phil sometimes did. Him using a pick means we're getting a better example of what the guitar would sound like over Jared who played with his fingers.
Exactly! Michael is a great player/singer and really shows what the guitar will do.
i get why they “replaced” Phil
they want to keep demo ing their guitars in the store so people can hear them before maybe buying.
but Phil brought this channel to a whole different level his energy, crazyness, goodlooks and playing is what made people come back.
Phil is now a member of Bon jovi and touring the world, he doesn’t have time anymore to do these videos.
Sadly Jared was faced with mixed reviews, and my guess is this guy will get that to
But i wish fretted americana all the good luck
It's too bad about Jared, because he's an awesome player, he can sing and has the rock attitude so he was a really good replacement for Phil actually.
NowakP agree jared was great becaus he didn’t try to be Phil
his playing style was really different, i really loved it
@@NotSosigRamsey Now Jared is touring around Europe and so forth too with those Epi Les Paul Custom with a single P90 tearing it up. The good ones have to move on at some point. Good thing there are old videos still up.
AntmanFelix yea
i sometimes watch the old videos with phil x
great stuff
Not Sosig Ramsey don’t know why Jared had mixed reviews. The dude is killer and since then has gained massive tours with Fozzy, John 5, and is now hitting up festivals like awaken this summer. Very impressive player.
This new guy is great too. Just because they don’t have Phil’s eccentricities doesn’t mean people should hate on em
Phil said on Twitter a while ago that he's done with this, for those wondering where he is. He said something along the lines of "It was a blast at first, but wasn't fun anymore towards the end."
Rod Belding you could tell by the end that he wasn’t enjoying it anymore
i've known Mike forever...My Brother from another Mother...Awesome to see you winning at what you love and were born to do...on and on 'till the next show Love and Respect
It isn't even Friday...
Awesome Mr Grant! Glad to see Fretted Americana back, learning about awesome axes, and learning about (and from) Michael as a musician! Now that the seal is broken, feel at home, and rip into it! \m/
Glad the demos are back!!! Keep em coming!
I want to say welcome back, Fretted Americana! I, too, was hoping to see a return of Phil X, however, it is good to see a new face. Michael Grant, thank you for taking the time to play two Beatles songs on your debut. I look forward to hearing more from FA and MG soon!
YES! I missed you guys!
Ps: I like this host, great player
Glad the channels back, missed em
I like the dude ! Give him a chance. I'm gonna keep watching !
He’s got a real good voice, definitely a pro
are people complaining about a new host? I don't remember this being "The Phil X Show" or even The Jared Nichols Show". This channel has always been about the guitars.
Beautifully restored and sounds even better! Thanks for sharing the Holy Grail of guitars experience. Some of us can't get enough samples of gold top tone.
Glad to see more vids coming out, this guy is great!
Michael Grant welcome to the madness! frettedamericana thank you for bringing in mr. grant!
It’s all good! Life’s about change. Please just keep bringing us the vintage goodness, and I’m sure all will be forgotten.
Love seeing this back!!!!!
He has some big shoes to fill and some won't accept the change but he did a good job just different from what we are used to.
Glad to see the show back!
Well done Michael Grant and FA. Great video
Yesss! I loved Phil but I also love the variety of different players! I'm just glad to see more videos! Thanks for uploading
Michael Grant you are the best. Best LA Guns ever had! I went to every show I could to see you play. Good to see you again.
Really liked Jared but all things must change
Yeah i really like Jared too, followed his socmed since his videos. I think it's a blessing for him to not come again, he's bigger than his haters here. Not hating frettedamericana (heck i subscribed), it's just Jared came in a not so ok time here.
I don't think anyone can 'replace' Phil, but this guy made me want to pick up my guitar and play and thats a huge part of why I loved Phil. Thanks FA!
I like the guy,
Definitely going to looking up his is music!!!
A bit out of tune that G-string... :(
Keep em coming!!!!!!!! This dude is awesome!!!
3 things I always liked about this channel were the humor, the great playing, and seeing someone beat on guitars that can be the price of a modest house like they owed them money.
I hope Michael can let more of his sense of humor come out more. I’ll give it a few weeks. Hopefully the comfort level goes up and we can see who Michael really is!
Good first effort!
Was glad to get the notification that a video was uploaded! Killer man...and Michael Grant seems like a cool dude. Lookin forward to more!
pretty bangin' licks on that outro!
Sweet 2018 Les Paul Tribute! Just got one myself.
This guy is good, no need to cry about it.
DUDE YOU HAVE KILLED IT, I SO LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hell yeh! Welcome back. And welcome Michael!
Great to see some action on this Channel, nice job Michael 🎸
Best of luck Michael!
Michael kicks ass ! Sweet vid
Nice to see you Michael!
I like this guy!!! Phil X lyte ;-). Can't wait to see more content with Michael.
I was thinking the same thing. Like a mellowed out Phil, even the accent is similar
Great to see Michael Grant here. Did a tour way back that his band Endeverafter was on. I was working for Airbourne on their first US tour.
Hey Michael, Cool video & nice guitar! You rock! Hope all is great, see you around!! =)
His skills are reasonably well developed
I liked Phil X because of his playing and his sense of humour. I like this fellow for his playing and because he's good 'n' sensible, no airs or graces.
Thank you Michael great demo. I would like to see your band doing a song at the end like the drills did. Time to show up and show off! You are perfect for this channel.
well done MG
sick guitar!!!!!!!!
Welcome back!
Seen Michael live several times with LA Guns. He kills, brings, destroys it every time. Cool to see him on these videos.
This is like when Steve Perry left journey, ILL CRY CRY FOR A COUPLE YEARS BUT ILL BE FINE! (we love you and miss you Phil!)
chill out a bit people, just be happy we get to see more guitars. no one can replace phil x...
When I heard Endeverafter, I thought "He's gotta play No More Words!"
I remember seeing Michael play with Endeverafter at the Last Day Saloon way back when. He absolutely killed it. Cool to see him here.
Welcome back.
Welcome back ! After Phil X and Jared James Nichols, here comes Michael Grant. Keep those vids coming ! \m/
Hey brother, great guitar, tone and of course what a touch! I'll catch you in LA in January :D
Wow fretted Americas back. Today is a good day. Miss Phil and Jared though. Excited to see the new guys style show.
that guitar sounds unreal
Oh hell yeah MG 🤘🏻
Phil was awesome, still is awesome in what he's doing, but he's been gone from here for a while. I think we're all glad for more Fretted Americana, even the people that are having trouble showing it.
Also, MG was bloody great. Can't wait to see him a few videos in after he's warmed in to it!
finally a new video.
What amp/effects post production used?
Whoa... I see I'm not the only one caught by surprise this channel is resurrected. In my case, though, I literally thought this was Phil X's channel. Learn something every day.
I will give him a chance because any beats the shit out of Norman's Rare guitars.
Kevinpaul hey what’s wrong with norms?
BeholdenYeti ! Are those guitars sick or cool? Mark leaves me up in the air.
Michael Lemmo is the one of the best guitarists on UA-cam
BeholdenYeti I guess I miss Phil and Mark is under pressure and under paid
I prefer Mark from norms
In the beginning loads of people hated Phil, well, some people hated him till the end.
So let's give Mr. Grant a chance and be glad we can hear some great guitars.
THATS A TELE IN DISGUISE, WOW I CANT BELEIVE HOW MUCH THAT GUITAR REMINDS ME OF A TELECASTER.....IT HAS THAT SNAP, AND TWANGY THING GOIN ON! THOSE ARE JUST GREAT PAFS ON A GREAT MAPLE, ROSEWOOD, AND MAHOGANY THAT HAS 60 PLUS YEARS OF SONG IN IT,THAT MAY BE THE BEST ONE I EVER HEARD, AND THATS ALL I DO IS CHECK OUT OLD LP;S ON UA-cam...AMAZING
Best part about it? "SEE YOU ON THE NEXT VIDEO!"
Fretted Americana is back! And Michael was awesome!
Yeah Saludos desde Perú
As much as I miss Phil X, this guy is decent 👌🏾
spinal tap, nice
I WISH HE WOULD TUNE THAT FUCKIN GUITAR!! HOLY SHIT.
First time ever watching this channel !! I don't know who was Phil...but this dude on the video is dramatically good and clever!! Thumbs up !!
Nice job by new guy...Mike...we are here to hear the guitars and he’s articulate and not over egotistical....
While I miss Phil I gotta admit. This guy is a hell of a player
I've calmed down a lot since I watched the last fretted Americana vid. Michaels chilled out vibe suits me better theses days! 😂
Phil X still rocks tho! 🤘
Didn't get the notice that this was up until two weeks late. Like a lot of people here, I watched the FA videos for Phil at least as much as for the guitars, but during the last round of reviews he did you could tell he really wasn't into it any more. Over the past 10 years, I've had a few transactions with FA, both buying and selling, and David Brass has been nothing but a class act (hell, he even invited me over to his house for one of them!) so I'm not going to whine about "where's Phil??", I understand why he isn't doing these any more.
This is the first I've heard of Michael Grant, but I didn't know who Phil X was either until I started watching his reviews and that turned out to be a huge game changer for me and the way I play guitar. Michael can obviously play, hopefully he'll stick around long enough to win over the naysayers.
Where’s phill?x
I would guess busy. He is in demand these days.
PX got a better paying gig. That's what professional musicians do. Wish him the best, but sure miss him here. Pretty sure we all do.
A little known band called BON JOVI , i heard they're slippery when wet
He moved to Belgium opened a balloon factory with LaToya Jackson and Todd Bridges.
Who is Todd? I have heard of these Jacksons...
Bwahaha! Shit! I just broke out laughing! Michael did the "MASTER...MASTER...MAsterrrr...masteeeerr!!" Dude that's awesome!
Welcome back FA! Welcome aboard Michael! You people will dig Michael! He's cool as fuck, can play and can sing!
Jared was great and I'm happy to see the channel back, open to give the new host a chance. But please, make sure the guitars are properly tuned, guys!
I thought that this year's videos would never come. I'm happy to see this new guy in showing us cool guitars. That 58 is monstrous, great tones! What amp is he using?
I hope he gets the band in... I loved the covers Phil did a few years back
this is the first video I've seen from them in a while. I thought they'd closed up shop.
Great little Spinal tap ref there... sweet. Good job! Hopefully we get to hear and hear about different amp setups like in the good'ol days? @frettedamericana ?
didn't know I was still subscribed.
We miss you Phil
Looks like the 50’s Goldtop I saw Nels Cline play with Wilco a couple years ago, which I think used to be owned by the late great Duane Allman.
Very clean axe nonetheless, looks almost like a VOS reissue.
Michael Grant - Fretted Americana is a good match. Bring him back and demo more great guitars.
Tough to fill Phil's shoes but i'm willing to see what he's got. Needs a little work but it's his first vid so let experience sink in and see what happens. Guitar sounds/looks amazing tho
I wanna watch the man who plays the guitars with full of happiness.
Title says 58, but the intro card says 68.
it is a 1958... sorry there is a typo
Filling this position after PX made it a great _SHOW_ of good INFO-Tainment value for Guitarists/Musicians will be very difficult for FrettedAmericana. The axes were only co-Stars. I wish them great luck. And I'll continue to check out their offerings (and watching PX repeats).
Maybe Michael loosens up a bit as he does the other axes in the rack. That's a snazzy LP in this one.
Welcome back. Where is that crazy guy?
This was cool. Michael is cool. Just make sure the guitar is in tune next time! :)
I may just get a sg lefty but it has to be custom shop
Icki Madrasi the struggle of being left handed I feel you bro
Love Phil, but this guy introduced guitar,I think it’s good for people who wants to know the sound of guitars, this channel back again which is the point
I liked it but of course I miss Phil but whatever this guy is all right. I'll keep watching.
