It is awesome you are the owner of a original unmolested 1958 Burst! The old Bursts to me are the Stradivarius of electric guitars. I only own a Re issue 58 but treasure it and can only imagine what playing and owning a genuine late 50's LP is like.

I’ve no doubt that the ageing process improves the tonality of good instruments but it’s important to remember that when those iconic recordings such as the ‘beano’ album were made those ‘bursts were not even ten years old..good guitars in the hands of great players..good shout for Gary Green..everybody needs to watch a few gentle giant videos during this lockdown!!

What a BEAUTIFUL guitar.58-60,the BEST Les Pauls ever made.You don’t have to apologize to anyone for that purchase.Good for you,Sir.I’m 65 and my sophomore year in high school I had the chance to buy a ‘57 Goldtop for $300.00.I thought it was too much money.In 1970 a ‘57 Les Paul was just an old guitar.Win some,lose some.Life goes on.Keep up the good work.
Lovely stuff Bob. Some great stories there. Even in the early 70s a 'burst would sell for around 400 quid which converts to around six grand today. Cheap by today's prices but few could afford them at the time. The best I could manage was a 1971 Les Paul Deluxe with a stripped down top. The mini humbuckers came out and a pair of full size pickups went in.
Bob, to me there is absolutely no need to explain why you own such a valuable guitar instead of some contemporary successor. It's been your dream, you've done all necessary to make it come true. Now you do the best thing to do with such a beautiful guitar, you play it. Plus, you do the second best thing, you show and explain this beauty to us. Most of us will probably never come close to such a guitar so we cherish the close-up views and sound bites you share with us. Thank you very much, you're a very kind and generous man!

We, who live in the USA, owe so much to Great Britain. The Brits jump started rock 'n roll in the 1960's, after we paused a bit due to the loss of Buddy Holly and Richie Valens. We needed new music from the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Peter Green, et. al. Thank you for offering Jimi Hendrix a second home, as well. Music and popular culture thrive in an environment of new compositions and artistic feedback (across the ocean). The 60's were the perfect storm for those lucky enough to live through it. I know Bob owns some fine examples of ES-335's, but I'd love to see his collection of Les Paul Jr's, and SG's, the more affordable line of Gibsons for aspiring musicians without a suitcase filled with quids.
Jan Akkerman playing a 56 Black Beauty with Alnico 5 neck pickups and P90 bridge ... ( Focus live at the Rainbow 1973) ... Even Clapton et al would weep at the tones Akkerman achieved! Not to mention His technical ability and His absolutely crushing, musically, and emotionally ... Heartfelt playing. (BTW ... great video ... totally ignore the mentally disturbed haters)

I don’t have anything remotely close to your burst but I do have several very nice guitars. Thanks for letting people know that we don’t have to apologize for getting guitars we’ve worked hard for. I was obsessed with Mark Knopfler's tone on Brothers in Arms so I had to have a burst Les Paul. Couldn't afford a real '58 so I bought a replica '59 burst built by Gil Yaron. It's the best guitar I've ever played and I have quite a few good ones.

You are a musician as far as I'm concerned. as an audio engineer I had the opportunity to have worked on many of EC later records and a rare moment with Blackie, which a private (venture capital) client owned at one time along with the 64 red 335. I was born in 1955. We grew up in a great time for music and a great time for guitars. My dream was always a Gold Top with P-90's. I am fortunate to have one, its isn't a 58, but it will do just fine. Great story Bob, I love listening to you talk guitars. Keep it up.

When I was 14 years old I worked very, very hard to save up enough money for a brand new Fender Twin Reverb, that was back in 1976. I still own that amplifier and use it daily. Of course not the same appreciation in value as a Burst, but that isn't the point I'm making, anyone can indeed do what you've done. Congrats Sir and again I thank you for sharing. And get that finger healed up, wise to spend the time practicing slide.

I could listen to people like Bob and joe bonamassa all day, genuine passion and knowledge for the instruments they own, who would the trolls rather have the guitars, guys like bob or some collector who has them in a vault never playing them
I have a fantastic 60th Anniversary R9 that’s a good one. It’s loud acoustically and screams plugged in. There’s a lot of dogs out there so you need to play them before you buy them. Don’t just look for the flashiest tops either. People need to remember that those fantastic 60’s blues albums were done by what would be considered today as a bunch of amateur musicians. They were barely in their 20’s. They used those Sunburst Les Paul guitars to the best of their young abilities and gave us legendary music.
You are the kind of person who should own this type of instrument. Too many of these go into vaults with 100 plus guitar collections, never again to see the light of day. They are only appreciated for their monetary worth. You on the other hand will play it , truly appreciate it, and are sharing it . You deserve it .Well done sir . Great video. Nothing but respect for you in your quest to own a vintage Les Paul. I remember As a 16 year old in Liverpool pressing my nose against the window of Hessey’s music and staring slack jawed at an ebony les Paul custom lying seductively in its pink lined case. I worked two jobs for 15 hours a day for three years until i could buy one of my own. Now many years (and many guitars) later I’m in a privileged position to own some wonderful guitars both vintage and modern and although I’ve done my fair share of touring and gigging with them, sometimes just opening the case and sitting in the living room and having a blast through a small tweed amp brings great pleasure to me.
Bob, I could listen to you for hours. Even if I am not even in my thirties, I also share the same passion that you have for the music and specially for the golden era you mention. It has been as well a dream for me, since I realized about the existance of these almost mythical instruments, to not even own, but to have the chance to play one. Hopefully it would be possible one day, but here in Spain the chances are unfortunately minimal. As far as I know there is only a burst in Spain, one of the four lefties burst that were produced in this era, but that's all. Hopefully one day it will happen. When I came across your video I took one look at your LP guitar and said to myself " He's got my guitar! It looks identical to my LP " but mine is not a 58', it's a 59' re-issue that is aged. Plays great but I'm sure it doesn't cross the finish line like yours. Congrats on your purchase ! Why would anyone 'Troll' you for owning a vintage Les Paul? You don't have to be a famous musician! I see you as a competent blues guitarist with a considerable amount of knowledge on the historical aspects of the Les Paul. You've worked hard to achieve ownership of a beautiful guitar. May you and Ramon long continue with your association and ownership of those historical instruments.
Yes most of the 70s 80s LPs were logs Most sounded ok but just didn't seem to have IT Lot's of pros say their lighter guitars are the better sounding That is one clean LP you have there Awesome You deserve that guitar my friend 😊

Why would anyone 'Troll' you for owning a vintage Les Paul? You don't have to be a famous musician! I see you as a competent blues guitarist with a considerable amount of knowledge on the historical aspects of the Les Paul. You've worked hard to achieve ownership of a beautiful guitar. May you and Ramon long continue with your association and ownership of those historical instruments.

Yes most of the 70s 80s LPs were logs Most sounded ok but just didn't seem to have IT Lot's of pros say their lighter guitars are the better sounding That is one clean LP you have there Awesome You deserve that guitar my friend 😊
