    My Mum and Dad met on VE day 1945. She was 18 and he was 23 and in the Navy. They told me that London was going absolutely crazy......people were singing and dancing in the streets and kissing and cuddling each other. London took such a terrible pounding during the war, especially the East End (where I was born). My Mum told me that one night she was supposed to attend a birthday party in the local pub, but her Mum (my Nan), begged her not to go......she had a bad feeling about it. So my Mum didn't go to the party, and that night the pub took a direct hit from a German Bomber. Everyone was killed, and my Mum would have been one of them if she had not listened to my Nan......strange to think that I wouldn't be here today if my Nan had not had that weird premonition. My parents are dead now, but I believe that they were the from greatest generation, so brave and stoic.

      the fighting and hostilities continued long after the official war ended.
      Pockets of Nazi rebellion and Japanese holdout squadrons continued to fight perceived enemies in the following 5-10 years.
      A single Japanese private from the days of Imperial Japan, Hiroo Onoda, *continued to engage in combat against until as late as 1974* because he refused to acknowledge that the emperor would ever have surrendered, and that leaflets and newspapers of the time must be propaganda by the Allies.
      A Japanese man that discovered him later had to fly all the way back to Japan, prove to the Japanese government of his existence, and then find his superior officer (who was now working as a bookkeeper) to fly him all the way out to the Philippines to order him to surrender.

      @@hobomike6935 "Pockets of Nazi rebellion" - what are you refering to?
      because unlike I'm severely mistaken, there wasn't a significant "nazi rebellion" after the end of the war at the 8th/9th of May.

    • @hobomike6935
      @hobomike6935 2 роки тому +4

      @@xxxaragon that is true: no significant German Resistance occurred after the fall of Germany in 1945.
      although not necessarily German Nazis, fascists and nazi sympathizers rebelled against government order and continued to promote ideology well into the 60s, Unsanctioned. Among the most significant of these neo-fascist groups was the MSE, the MSI, and the Tambroni Cabinet.
      Although “nazis” and “fascist” groups still exist, they are largely uncoordinated and extremely divided on who is and isn’t part of their collective and who can actually be described as a fascist.

It was the best anniversary ever and I can remember inviting my entire street to my house for the 75th anniversary celebrations and we didn’t care about rules. We still followed social distancing obviously; i can remember dancing on the table and I fell off - it tremendously hurt but that didn’t stop my celebrations.

    Watching this as an American gave me goosebumps I love the relationship between Anglo & American people and how as King George V said in the first world war (roughly) The two English speaking peoples have teamed up to save the world. And then again 20years later we did with his son King George VI.
    75 years today VE Day!

    As an Argentine, I'm always thankful to Britain because they've changed the whole world for the better with their 17th and 18th revolutions. Bringing economic development, free trade, democracy and freedom values who were born in the British Enlightenment, the abolition of slavery, sciences and medical development and they stopped the nazy tyrany.
    Here in Latin America, our modern nations were born with British help (supporting the wars against Spain) and we made constitutions based on the Enlightenment. As it is for Argentina, our state became economically strong during 1880-1930 thanks our commerce with Britain and British investments in our land. Our GDP ranked in top 5 for several years. That economical boom brought a mass of immigration from Europe and the make of the middle class.
