      I loved the review. You made a really good point on why the hand car is priced the way it is. Mentioning Marvel and Star Wars was also good to mention too considering that they are all owned by Disney too

    As an animation and theme park artist (including a few projects for The Mouse) and rail enthusiast, I can’t say enough about how much I appreciate the authenticity of this piece. Love that it was made just like the originals. It truly belongs in every O collection because it marks an extraordinary time for both Lionel and Disney. Production was limited though like I believe Eric pointed out. Originals do still exist out there but it can be very expensive to find one with minimal wear.

    Very nice, for sure. The old, clockwork trains, were pretty cool. Ives was a major producer, before Lionel basically forced them into electric train production. They still produced them until the end in the early 1930's, when they went out of business. Other American and European companies, such as American Flyer, Hafner and Hornby, produced them, as well. I have a friend that has a number of clockwork trains. They are fun to run.

    I was thrilled with the one I got. I've always loved both Disney and Lionel so when i saw this in the catalog it was a no brainer. The extra effort Lionel put in to the box, packaging, and more really made this a winner!

    That Disney 100th Anniversary Lionel Box is bad to the BONE! In 1934, Lionel sold more than 250,000 of the Mickey and Minnie Mouse Hand cars in 1934, if any of you are wondering, that is.

    I made a Large Scale Handcar for 7&1/2" LIVE steam locomotives 🚂 😀 , by using 2 Mickey and Minnie stuffed dolls on a wood platform and also small wood wheels because there aren't any small metal wheels 3" D. Also a battery 🔋 and electric motor with small flywheel to maintain momentum and extra chain drive. Plus ➕ driving rod to the Pumping Handelbar.xxxx.typo. P.S. I also have extra dolls of Mickey and Minnie as Santa 🎅 🤶 and Mrs. Clause for CHRISTMAS ✝️🛐✡🇮🇱🕎☮♾‼️🎄 💖 .

    It would be cool if Lionel did replications of their old pre-war trains every now and then. Wonder if the Mickey and Minnie hand car will revive that like MTH use to do. Does anyone know what happened to the tooling that MTH had?

  • @johnblair8146
    @johnblair8146 8 місяців тому +4

    The original was mass produced by the tens of thousands. Irvington just literally puked those things out. $199/ $150 is QUITE FAIR for that item which was undoubtedly handmade.

  • @SteamKing2160
    @SteamKing2160 8 місяців тому

    yea Lionel sold 253,000 of those original handcars after creditors were "banging" at their door and in the fall of 1929, the toy train manufacturers were anticipating the best christmas season ever but the great depression happened. This had a really bad effect on Ives who was overtaken by Lionel in sales in 1924 and then filed for bankruptcy in 1928. Lionel's revenue in 1926 was twice that of Ives. So when Ives went under, Lionel purchased them and continued their line of trains until 1932. This was also interesting for the lower end line, the Winner Lines introduced in 1931 which was priced for $3.35 including a transformer, train, and track. In a few years it became Lionel Ives in 1933 and then became Lionel Jr in 1934. They were forerunners of Lionel Scout sets of the postwar era. The other handcar they sold at that time that wasn't mentioned in this video was Donald Duck and Pluto.

    Mickey Mouse has entered the Public Domain.

  • @Shipwright1918
    @Shipwright1918 8 місяців тому

    Strictly speaking, Mickey didn't save Lionel on his own. Lionel produced a line of inexpensive trains in clockwork and electric under the "Winner Lines" branding that sold well during the Depression.
    The M-10000 streamliner set also gets the honors as it was wildly popular along with Mickey and the Winner Line trains.
    It's really neat Lionel made this to celebrate Disney's 100th, and that it's so faithful to the original, but like the original in today's market this repica has got a steep price tag!
    Interestingly, Schylling made a clockwork handcar for Lionel's 100th in 2000 which can still be found quite reasonably. There's always the classic electric handcar too for reasonable prices, got both instead of Mickey and not sorry for the substitution.

      @Ericstrains  8 місяців тому

      maybe

    • @TobyPasman
      @TobyPasman 8 місяців тому +1

      Yes, because it was the first of Lionel’s many streamliner trains. Lionel, working with blueprints supplied by the Union Pacific, had a model of the M10000 cataloged in the summer of 1935. They offered it in two color variations: canary yellow and brown, and aluminum color. The M10000 was followed by the Hiawatha, the Commodore Vanderbilt, the Flying Yankee, the PRR Torpedo and the UP City Of Denver. All of which were big hits. When they did the Flying Yankee, they offered a silver and red variant made for only one year exclusively for Macy’s. In addition to the streamliners, Lionel introduced the air whistle in 1935.

    I wonder if they will make a today's standard Minnie and Mickey mouse car but instead of just the one handcar it's the whole entire thing with an engine, tender and passenger cars and not make a limited amount but instead continue selling even after they run out. But of course make some that are limited edition and sell about 100,000 of the limited edition ones but allow people to pre-order them and make it an affordable price but the rest make them non limited edition and continue selling them.
