    I live in Spartanburg County in one of the smaller towns outside of the city. We moved here in 2022 and we love it. Yes, it's growing and there's a lot of construction, but there's so much to do here and the people are great. The reality is that this county is getting a TON of political transplants (republican voters who fled blue states, mostly) and the big issue is maintaining the infrastructure for all of the new families moving in.

    A few things that you probably don’t know about Spartanburg. It has one of the oldest law firms in the US, est 1825, it has what is believed to be one of the largest cemetery monuments in the nation, the Wonder of Life monument, it had the first airport, radio station, community foundation fund and artists guild in the state, it is where the the first college football game in SC was played and where the words to the song Amazing Grace were set to music. Spartanburg is home to 7 colleges and the SC School for the Deaf and Blind. Martin Luther King’s uncle was once pastor of a church in Spartanburg and the inventor of the PC modem is a native of Spartanburg. Due to training received by Spartanburg’s fire department, the city has named a FireSafe city. Spartanburg has a Neighborhood Toolshed program in which city residents can borrow lawn maintenance equipment free of charge from the city.

    One of Spartanburg’s oldest neighborhoods, Converse Heights, has a storied history. Residents have included mayors, former governor/US Senator and President of USC Donald Russell, former governor, US Supreme Court Justice and US Secretary of State James F. Byrnes, Domestic Policy adviser to President Reagan Kenneth Cribb, textile magnate Roger Milliken; the founder of WSPA TV / radio; Fred Wolfe, the brother of famous Asheville writer Thomas Wolfe; Faith Burwell who married the owner of the Russian Tea Room in NYC and ran it after his death; a former director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and a 16 year old boy who saved Spartanburg’s train station from being torn down after a fire.

    Can we just talk about the high crime rate in the city? We could go into why the crime rate is so high but then that wouldn’t be very PC.

    • @orgrichard
      @orgrichard Рік тому +2

      I was born and raised in Spartanburg and live in an older neighborhood in the city. Except for avoiding certain areas at night I consider Spartanburg overall to be very safe. Most of the crime is property crime. Crime rates fluctuate. Lewiston, ME had been named the 13th safest city in the US prior the recent mass shootings there. Spartanburg reports all of its crime to the FBI database which not all cities do. The best source of information about Spartanburg’s crime rate and trends is the police annual crime report for 2022 which is posted on UA-cam. Several years ago, Neighborhood Scout published crime statistics for Spartanburg that drew data from a larger area than the city which inflated the statistics. The city has taken a number of steps to address crime including community policing, holding 2 gun buybacks and upgrading police technology.

      Crime happens in all cities, national and world wide, however I do like your second part as to why. Like is there a high unemployment rate and people are stealing? Or is it just people being destructive? Or is it because the population is a small number the crime rate appears high, but compared to other cities it is not so bad?

    • @orgrichard
      @orgrichard 11 місяців тому +2

      @@forestcatkay14 Part of it is crimes committed by repeat offenders who are not kept in jail for previous offenses. Earlier this week, a man from Greenville, who was wanted in Spartanburg for armed robbery, led police on a chase in Spartanburg County and barricaded himself inside of a home. Fortunately, the incident ended peacefully with no shots fired. According the the sheriff, the man had 20 outstanding warrants in Spartanburg County and 45 in Greenville County.

      Could it be because you're a Right-to-Work state, so don't have union representation of the working class? Could it be that SC has no minimum wage? Could it be that, when I investigated moving to SC, the same job that I get paid nearly $100,000 per year for here in rural New York State paid less than half that and had terrible benefits? Sorry carlos, but you need to get out more.

      There are cities with higher murder rates than Spartanburg. For example, Greensboro, NC had 65 murders last year. Spartanburg (city) had 6 murders in 2023 and 2 murders in 2022. Homelessness is all over the US.

    You may or may not like it. After 3 months I knew it had nothing for me. Work wise the pay is garbage, the cost of living isn’t great, the people are fine, they just don’t want to know you or want you here, but they’ll be polite about it. There’s crime, but it seems to be mostly in certain areas. As far as goods and services or construction, people here will hire the cheapest person even if it bites them. I’m still trying to figure out what makes them tick here, I guess family. The fishing is awful unless you don’t know any better. You need to rent here before buying, because there’s a chance I am right and you will hate it. Oh and expect to pay big time at the dmv if you bring car here, there’s a mandatory $250 fee for that plus property taxes on it then the registration. I am 100 percent va disabled and they tell you you’re tax exempt, but you have to jump through hoops, instead of them just looking at the letter of proof you have in hand. Then they deny that because you’re not 100 percent permanent and total, total bs just to seem pro veteran. I ended up paying over 2500 to register two cars and a trailer. Most people here I imagine lie about the value of these autos and trailers, but I don’t believe that is moral. Remember when you watch these videos, you’re watching a video from somebody who makes money off selling houses in that area. Is it beautiful here, yeah it pretty, in the fall and spring, winters are gloomy and cold. It’s affordable for a reason, do your due diligence or you’ll get stuck somewhere that has nothing for you.

    Anderson and Greenville counties get way more snow than Spartanburg. Tell it straight. Also, let's talk cons. The homeless population is exploding. The police force is lacking. The county and city governments are really bad, but people keep voting the same people in. Infrastructure is beyond bad. Really, the cons outweigh the pros for this county.

    • @orgrichard
      @orgrichard 2 місяці тому

      As for infrastructure, in November 2023, Spartanburg County voters approved a penny sales tax for road improvements. This was a re-purposing of a penny tax that was passed for building a new courthouse, city hall, police headquarters and 911 center. Last week, Spartanburg city voters approved a referendum to build a new elementary school to replace an older one and to build an early childhood development wing onto another school. The city has just allocated $7.5 million from left over Pandemic Relief Funds to replace aging water pipes in the downtown area. Spartanburg’s city police department is one of 2 in the state that has implemented high tech Real Time Crime technology. The city has a team called HEART ( Homeless Engagement and Response Team) that is addressing the homeless issue.

      Spartanburg was named after the Spartan Regiment, a local militia who helped win the Battle of Cowpens in the Revolutionary War. The regimental flag is on display at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. The origin of Spartanburg’s name was a Jeopardy! clue several months ago.
