Born and raised South Carolina. I certainly appreciate you bringing real living, real issues to peoples' consciousness. At the same time, my family came from this rural part of SC. At one point driving through one of these towns, I made a remark that it is so sad, that is is so unlikely that people growing up here will have upward mobility. My father (who grew up far poorer than this) gently, but firmly corrected me. He changed my entire outlook. He grew up in a housing project, but he went on to be the first in the family to go to college - marry a beautiful, loving spouse and create a family. While statistics may say one thing about the poverty, personal diligence and perseverance can mean a whole lot more. This part of the country can be a vast reserve of grit and determination - which make for a hugely important factor in life success.
I live in Aiken ,SC and drive to Hilton head island a lot. I take the back roads through many small towns. I find them fascinating like you and enjoy seeing the country side. Keep up the good work.
My 1st husband grew up in New Ellenton. We lived there in late 70's until 83. Loved that place! It has grown since we left. Kim Poston Williams is the mayor now. She lived across the street from us. She was my daughters friend.
I was born in Columbia but only lived there till I was 7, then moved to Oklahoma and later Alabama, my grandparents lived in Spartanburg and owned land up near Cowpens - Gaffney on an old farm with abandoned house and wooded area with creek, the times we went there are priceless with the visitations reminiscent of exceptional food and the smell of honeysuckle and Carolina Jasmine, to the north you could see 2 mountain peaks that were the south boundary of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Living in the UK, I find this a fascinating insight! I liked Denmark best - the history of the college was great...and I wonder what stories the old abandoned houses could tell. The way Nature has reclaimed then make them almost works of art. Thank you for sharing :)
What ruined this Amercian Colony - the US if how the politicians allowed manufacturing to go overseas. This destroyed the middle class as anyone with only a high school education more than likely got stuck in poverty. In addition or elementary and high schools the quality of education has gone down and down and the respect for teachers and those in authority does not exist so frankly the country here is finished.
Born in Sumter, SC and proud of my town. Planning to go visit my mother this weekend. Hard workers and many successful classmates from South Sumter area(across the tracks )
Thanks for showing these hidden parts of the Palmetto State that even most who live here rarely see. There are really two South Carolinas. The one that includes urban areas around Columbia, Greenville and Charleston, as well as Myrtle Beach and Rock Hill, can't build homes or improve infrastructure fast enough for the massive influx of new residents. But many other parts of the state like these towns are just backwaters now with little in the way of economic growth or incentive for people to stay or move to. It's sad to see the state of decay in these places that were left behind in an area of the country that is overall experiencing explosive growth.
Just because they show urban areas that have more money, more people and more menial jobs like fast food ,it doesn't mean small towns are a bad place to live ,the small towns across america were thriving with people once, Those people that stayed, are mostly just retired and living the same life as if they retired in a large city, Many just choose to stay for the peace and quiet and feel not having all the cars and people driving by is a much safer and better place to live then any larger city, The good part about these small towns a lot of times are cheap prices on property, cheaper taxes and low crime, that'smainly due to young people who prefer big cities., I retired and lived in the city to make money, then retired early ,bought a few hundred acres of land and built a home in a area similar , all because of low prices , low taxes and low crime, I would never want to move from the country .
Surely over time the population pressure will see a demand for these small towns if they are not too far from the coast which could be the centre of the action. Not everyone can afford to be in the centre and many are happy to be on the edges. People live where they can afford, be happy and hopefully safe. What may look like a dying town with many abandoned buildings will be very different in 10 years. I've seen this happen all over the world and South Carolina will be no exception. The penny will drop, a few will see the opportunity and before you know it real estate is booming. Watch this space.
@@donm3844 That's why I live where I do. But you have to be careful about advertising the areas with the benefits of low cost of living! If there is a golf course in 5 miles you'll attract "people" that will move in and run the cost of living up!! Before you know it you won't recognize the neighborhood!! Or your tax bill!! Forget Myrtle Beach, they're colonizing the whole damn state!! Florida's gotten too expensive!

I live in SC., near Augusta, GA. My house has a large front porch. The big porches in the south were necessary before air conditioning. They not only shielded the windows from allowing the sun to shine right in, keeping the house cooler, but they provided a shady area to sit outside when the house became unbearably hot, especially when there was a breeze blowing outside, or when the sun was going down. Denmark is one of, I believe, three towns in SC that have an Amtrak station.
I live in SC and enjoy taking the long way to wherever I'm going just to pass through towns like these. SC has plenty of them, probably more so than any other state. The mills all set up at the bottom of the mountains and the ruins can still be seen at the fall line across the state. All the processing plants died when they did.
I enjoy watching people venture into towns in South Carolina. I am a faithful citizen of a town in SC, all my life I've traveled through county's and what a road trip. South Carolina is filled with rural towns some are often afraid of traveling through especially at night. History and stories are often known for the history of each rural area. But you also have towns people refuse to talk about and what's the real reason the town is the way it is today.I can say Columbia maybe the capital of SC but it's also a place to know your surroundings. Blessings to all your adventures in the wonderful world of SC!!!
he's talking like we all heard of the frog jump here in SC....I never heard of it or I forgot if I did ..I grew here He's prob one of those people who think hollywood has learned southern accent to lol
I live about an hour from here in Manning. I've been here many, many times. Lots of little towns like this in SC. Black bars in the south are often called "social clubs"

Great video! Lived here in SC for about 13 years now. Never been to that part of the state. That's one of the poorest areas of the state. Also that way up around Dillion and Bennettsville along the NC border.Great job with all the numbers!
Well done. I am a South Carolinian and LOVE this state. Have been to all the towns you showed. You sure picked up on Bamberg's lack of parking downtown. Think this was a Federal government project years ago to "modernize" the downtown. Oh for the good old days when these places were prosperous and fun. God Bless America!!
South Carolina has ranked near the bottom of the Nation in education for decades while leading the Nation in traffic fatalities & domestic violence related murders..... probably why trump is so popular in S.C.
I really enjoyed this video. My grandmother started out at Voorhees College in Denmark before transferring to Claflin University in Orangeburg. It was exciting in Orangeburg for her compared to St. Stephen SC.
Guess what you didn't see in this video; homeless encampments, piles of trash, choking traffic. I am so, so very thankful that I was born and grew up in rural North Carolina. I'm just a couple of minutes from South Carolina. Also, I just got back from a trip to India. After experiencing the streets and traffic of Delhi, these wide, clean, empty streets look like the road to Paradise. So you see, a town that might not look like much to you, can be that slice of Heaven, for someone else.
I’m Indian and just spent all of February 2023 in India. I live right by Carowinds on SC side and I relate. The city is so so different than my small town in SC
Born in Augusta, GA and raised in Aiken, SC. I live in Columbia, SC now. There are so many back road towns in SC., Ive been to the frog jump and the chitlin strut in that area. You should check out Neeses and Great Falls, SC. Also North, South Carolina. Its a very small city.
I was raised in Denmark and Springfield from 82 until 2000 and I also lived in blackville from 2000 until 2002 moved to Greenville great times in those woods and back roads..
I love your video! You are not "downing" the poverty that some folks end up living in. All the facts you interjected were also very interesting. Please continue... Look forward to more.
We live in FL and have 2 sons that live in the mountains or NW North Carolina. When we travel back and forth we usually travel hywy 321 through Denmark, Norway and Neeses because it is not a bad road better then I-95 in that area, more visually interesting. The grocery store, Piggly Wiggly in Neeses has a large country style resturant we found by accident. We were going to try to find some deli type sandwiches but now we enjoy the resturant
B.P. ...................when me and my Pop used to go hunting and shooting , 50 or 60 years ago we went all over the country side , still hit the back roads of Fl and Ala now !!!!
We are a couple who are reaching our mid 60s, and have nothing. But I was inspired to see how many wonderful homes there still are in areas not so nice... (we don't care about nice neighborhoods) and I am suddenly inspired to find one of them, though we are soon to be on SS only. Maybe a rental... Anyhow, this has really set off a bomb in my mind. Thank you, God bless you! PS We currently rent a nice 1963 2 BR bungalow in Greenville on 1 and 1/2 acre, but too close to town, would like to be further out.
There's plenty old cheap homes for sale outta town on large blocks. You probably find the rent your paying where you are now would pay for one of these homes and blocks of dirt . One thing is lack of services like medical ect . And that's very important when you're getting older to have them close by. Take care and best of luck in life.
@@charliepearce8767 I live in Australia in a neighbourhood where nothing ever happens. This was a very enlightening video. I drove all four of those town back in 1993 as a delivery driver for Alco Health Services. The people was so nice and sweet at every stop. I was born in Laurens County, South Carolina and have lived in SC since I was born. I spent most of my life in the upstate and you would be shocked by how much of our state looks like this due to all of the old textile mills shutting down. Also lots of big beautiful houses rotting right in the middle of town.

What a blessing it would be to live near a spring like that. Nothing beats clean spring water. I hope the wifey enjoyed it. It was thoughtful of you to bring her some.
Just catching up with your southern tour. Born in East TN and have lived and traveled throughout the region. Some places grow, some fade, some are destined for ghosts. There are just so many places to see and they all have tales to tell. Safe travels on the back roads.
The frog jumping contest comes from the Mark Twain book: “The Celebrated Jumping Frogs of Calaveras County.” Lots of places in the country have the contests.
NOOOOO 😱🤦🏽♀️🏃🏾♀️ Not frogs . Never been although it's down the road from my daughter's house 😩 Been to Springfield many times. My daughter is 20 mins away in Williston. Peaceful, unbothered place. I collect water from the Springs often. So clear and refreshingly cold especially in Summer 💦💧
This video stirs up a lot of fond memories for me. I would travel these back roads...first as a child with my parents and later by myself...when traveling from just outside of Atlanta to Conway, SC over a 40 year period ending in 2007. My parents loved the backroads. We would take the interstate until we got to Augusta and then backroads through the small towns the rest of the way. I haven't made the journey now for 15 years...parents and aunts and uncles are all gone now. I miss those trips.
I love your videos but am really saddened by them too! Not sure how to read the way America is going, but it looks like the employers outsourcing has really brought rural America to it's knees!
The rich wanted to be richer. And we made it super easy for them to do it. At great cost to everyone else. I grew up in that area. It was never in a great state of affairs, but a whole lot better than today.
Anne, so correct! "NAPA, OUTSOURCING, AND EVER BEGINNING TO ALLOW FOREIGN COUNTRIES TO BUY OUR FARMLAND" are great atrocities. Closing all the factories had an unbelievable effect on S.C. and the U.S.A.
People buying foreign cars and profits go overseas even if vehicle is built here. Keep $ here and keep jobs here. But American when possible and stay outta walmart.
@@christinesommerfeld9815 that's more about design though, foreign cars were better value and more economical and safer that their US brothers. When all your jobs are moved to another country the consequences to local economies is massive. The highways from the coast/ports for instance, bypass local towns and close down local businesses while goods are transported by truck to greater urban depots. And that's just one example. Lowered standards of living due to lower wages which only work as long as goods that are produced cheaply don't make a sudden rise in price due to unforeseen events. Even the tech age profits of US development have gone to another Country while those working in the sectors development are earning salaries far greater than the average citizen. Only advantage to tech is that location is not always a disadvantage, but influence does reside in one main location. Sorry to be so longwinded but the consequences of outsourcing have been devastating and far greater than all I have listed here.
Hit Springfield on Saturdays for the live stock auction. They have a second auction after 10 am for tools, farm machines and antiques. They also have an amazing bbq sandwich you can buy out of the front office.

Hope you enjoyed the sights of our very own backyard Jumanji! Denmark is very close to home for me and it has always been a testament to the fragility of an establishment and fervent determination of a people.
I’m glad u mentioned the healing springs. My daughter and family lives in Moncks Corner, SC and we go every time we go up there to get the water. It’s so fresh and good.
My state, maybe not the city where I grew up. Spartanburg is my town. My daddy lived here all of his life, born in 1917 and the things he told me. Life was hard and my mother grew up in Campobello and she picked cotton. She was born in 1937 and she was raised as a farm girl. Great story.

Once again, you never disappoint. I loved our drive today. The Rexall drug sign is a beauty. My grandfather had a drugstore in my hometown in Kansas. Rexall was the competitor. The buildings next to the bank & post office ( with the Borden sign you were interested in) are actually an antique mall. The pink building as well as the building left of it are part of the antique mall.
I actually cried watching this video. At 10:44 the large home that has sadly burned was my girlfriends families. It was burned down in gang related activity in 2021. It was over 100 years old and im sure beautiful in its time. I stood outside of this house and felt tremendous sadness and grief for her family. All her childhood and all of her mothers belongings were lost and they maintained loved and cherished this home. Im a year late and not a subscriber but stumbling across this has blown my mind.

Nuremberg bamberg , Williamsburg . And all of the places have a stench of southern Bavaria . Country country county . Definitely about to do more research
Thanks for the tour ! Not sure but on a hunch the first town with the annual jumping frog contest may be a direct homage and celebration of one of our national treasures , author and humorist Mark Twain. The story in question is the famous short story : The Jumping Frog of Calaberous ? County .

My girlfriend and I ran away from a dying bush town as soon as we were old enough to get our car license here in Australia. We both got good trade jobs and became successful in life. 20 years later, we dropped into the local drinking club to see if any of our old friends were still living there. Finding some old friends we were asked "When are we moving back home ?" These people were stuck in time looking sad and old with no money or future.. They failed to see their town had nothing to offer other than poverty, addiction, boredom, and a wasted life. They weren't happy just surviving.

Many of those towns fell into harder times when factory work began relocating overseas in the 90s. There haven't been any economic cycles for towns to catch up. Beautifully said. I am a new transplant to SC and it is a quirky, gritty, lovely place. I am happy here and love it and the people.

@@trishberry3821 I go 278 through Jackson!! But I do know New Ellenton.
My 1st husband grew up in New Ellenton. We lived there in late 70's until 83.
Loved that place! It has grown since we left. Kim Poston Williams is the mayor now. She lived across the street from us. She was my daughters friend.
Hey my grandparents live in Aiken we always visit in December and go to Hope Gardens house and get hot chocolate and walk the property. Fun times...👍👍
Only if your grandparents still have that land in Cowpens :)

Living in the UK, I find this a fascinating insight! I liked Denmark best - the history of the college was great...and I wonder what stories the old abandoned houses could tell. The way Nature has reclaimed then make them almost works of art. Thank you for sharing :)
@Lee Roland good thing art is subjective
What ruined this Amercian Colony - the US if how the politicians allowed manufacturing to go overseas. This destroyed the middle class as anyone with only a high school education more than likely got stuck in poverty. In addition or elementary and high schools the quality of education has gone down and down and the respect for teachers and those in authority does not exist so frankly the country here is finished.
I was born and raised in SC! I went to college in Orangeburg, SC. Very country with a lot of poverty but man I had some good times in O'burg!!

Well done. I am a South Carolinian and LOVE this state. Have been to all the towns you showed. You sure picked up on Bamberg's lack of parking downtown. Think this was a Federal government project years ago to "modernize" the downtown. Oh for the good old days when these places were prosperous and fun.

South Carolina stand up 💯
South Carolina has ranked near the bottom of the Nation in education for decades while leading the Nation in traffic fatalities & domestic violence related murders..... probably why trump is so popular in S.C.

Yes! This channel is a treasure! 💎
This is what happens when back stabbing trade deals like NAFTA are signed.

Youre travels are so interesting. Thank you for sharing this.
Thanks for watching! :)
I’m from Walterboro, SC and currently live in Rock Hill (more urban…Charlotte metro area)…I have always had easy access to interstates…I definitely want to explore more of SC.
@13:00, I remember when my great grandmother's had a spring, I saw them use it a few times. One time the electric pump that brought water into the house froze up the pipe lines, we had to dig a new line and replaced the outside under the ground pipes, insulated better etc,...
You weren’t far from Hampton where my sister in law lives. It seems many of those older small towns are just a shell of what they once were. Enjoyed the ride LS 👍👌
I live in the South. The issue with these towns is lack of jobs due to manufacturing companies leaving the US. Time on your hands leads to drug problems which leads to crime. It makes a big difference when a company like BMW or Michelin Tires come in. Skill jobs is what helps.
Wow! You have solved every problem
These areas of the south Carolina state they don't change , they don't like education, and the poverty level is very high so when you don't change your town gets left behind
There is a very charming town about 30 minutes north of Aiken called Ridge Springs that is worth checking out and you were not far from Salley, home of the Chitlun Strut a big event in those parts!
Ridge Spring!
Thank you for showcasing these beautiful towns that are sadly 😢 underused… there really should be no homeless, no struggle, we should be able to empower and uplift one another!! Thanks for highlighting my state
What kind of people live in such small towns?
Medium home values in the US are ridiculous that is why more people can not afford homes especially if they are disabled I really enjoy your videos keep up the good work!
Good video Spoda! I loved the springs. Thank you.

My mom & dad lived right there in Hilda SC for about 13 years. Dad was the pastor there for the Methodist church in Hilda. Thanks for sharing.
Your video is very good. I'm an Army Brat. My dad was stationed at Ft. Jackson. We were shocked when we moved to SC.
I would imagine that in Bamberg the downtown buildings are right up next to the street because the streets were widened to become right next to the buildings. Roads were nowhere near as wide back when the town was built. The city engineers in later years messed that up big-time.
That was really so lovely of you to get water for the wifey. Hugs to you both from Germany.
🤗🤗🤗
I'm from Johnsonville/Lake City area of Sc. In a place called Prospect. We really are just a community with a country store an a dollar general.
