How to : Ring Test a Bench Grinder Wheel

- Here is a quick & easy method to "ring test" a grinding wheel for a bench grinder.
This will prove that there are no hidden defects/cracks that could literally make the wheel "explode" & will save you a trip to the emergency room.
It can be done at home or at the store with simple hand tools in less than 1 minute.

** For demonstration purposes, I used a glued together wheel that I broke so you can hear the differences in sound. A wheel that simply has a crack in it, will make the same hollow knock & will not make a clear "ring" when tapped **
Here are directions for the ring test, direct from Norton Abrasives (grinding wheel manufacturer) - www.nortonindustrial.com/uploa... - Авто та транспорт
Excellent video. We did this when I worked in tool and die 40 years ago. We had a wall that was covered with grinding wheels hanging on pegs. Always handled those wheels with great respect.
I am happy to say I learned something today. I did not know about the ring test. Thank you! Now if you'll excuse me there is something I need to do in my shop...
Thank u fir your video. I just bought my first bench grinder from Harbor freight. Never used one before. I'm trying to learn all that is necessary to operate the machine and safety aspects of it.
Thanks for this video. I appreciated that you demonstrated both a passing and a failing test result.
After hitting it with a screwdriver, you must hit it again to make sure the first hit didn't crack it, then you need to test a third time to make sure your second hit didn't crack it ..... repeat process and grab a face shield. I'm kidding, thank you, nice video
Exactly my thoughts
Excellent video, will test my stone currently installed and store test the next ones before purchase.
A simple and good quick way to make sure your wheel is safe to use .Brilliant
Great information.
When I watched your video I remembered learning that many moons ago
Fan-Dog-Gone-Tastic Information for a 12 Pak Joe. I have never even considered the condition of my grinding wheels of which several are second hand thus I am clueless as to the wheel condition. From now on I will be checking each and every grinding BEFORE and AFTER I swap the wheel.Wish I could get this type valuable information on more of my daily interactions with various shop machines.Very much appreciated,Warren In Alabama
EXCELLENT VIDEO!! I never knew this test existed, and I have my stone wheels sitting in my tool box (brass & steal wheels replaced them for parts cleaning). I will be testing those stone wheels every time I put them on. Great vid man, keep em coming!!
Thanks! :) Hopefully this video will eventually save someone from getting hurt!
Thanks for caring enough to make this vid! I'll definitely use this test to check all my grinding wheels from now on!
RenewTheRWandBlue Thanks for watching & commenting! I am glad I could help!
This is one of your best videos
Nice, helpful advice. Thank you!
What a great how to! I too never knew they could explode. I love your videos. Learning a lot and finding some awesome new tools to buy. You're very clear with explaining everything and you are thorough and to the point. Keep up the good work.
Well thanks a lot! :) Grinder wheels can be very dangerous, and I felt like showing people how to verify that they are safe to use, would hopefully prevent injuries at some point. I appreciate the kind words, it definitely motivates me to continue making videos. Thanks again!
Woow thank you, I never knew what was all about
Nice one !! this has been really helpful
Excellent, thank you, I just bought a bench grinder and the ring test is mentioned in the manual but it didn't explain what it was or how to do it. Now i know. Thank you
+Steven Mason Awesome! Glad to help.....better safe than sorry!
Thanks man! It's very helpful.
Another tip to preventing deadly injuries, is to make sure the guard is properly fitted, and stand to the side when first turning on the grinder, that way, if the wheel should shatter for any reason, you will be well out of the line of fire. Also, grinding aluminum will clog up the wheel, causing extreme heat due to friction, and ultimately lead to failure.
Excellent tip, thank you. Will now test all my wheels.
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching! :)
Dear friend: Thank you VM and congratulations by your video. This is an very important detail which many people, like me, like to use many tools , and their danger. there were time long ago a friend machinist told me about the sound of grinder wheel when it will be broken. But I never ear the sound type. Thank you , your intentions are very useful to many people in the world, because every day, someone is hurt with any tools, isn't it? . Best regards from Córdoba Argentina
+Fernando M Thank you Fernando! I am glad to help!
Nice tip buddy. Thanks :)
Do this with or without the label on it. I just bought a 6 inch stone and tried ringing it but didn't hear a ring just a thud. But my hearing is bad also.
YTM. Love that Knipex swag!
Thank you for that! Cheers
knowledgeable video
Thanks. Great vid.
I am about to buy a new grinder and wheels, so I'll do this. I was already aware of how dangerous they can be and they can explode, but I didn't know this simple test was available.
I Love Taylor Swift No problem! I am glad I could help...hopefully this video will save someone from getting hurt!
Real Tool Reviews Thanks. I have a question: How do I tighten up the nut on the spindle after I have installed the new grinding wheel? The reason I ask is because if I hold the nut on the other end with a spanner, that one loosens up as the other one tightens! And I don't want to grab the grinding wheel with a pair of mole-grips or pliers in case it damages the wheel and risks an explosion of the wheel (after passing the ring test before installation!)
Maybe that would be another good video for you to do - "how to change a grinding wheel" - I can't find one on here at all.
I Love Taylor Swift I need this answered too! Did you find out? Thanks:-)
Bettina Stepek No, he didn't reply. I tightened it up using my own initiative - spanners/mole grips etc…
I Love Taylor Swift hey thanks for answering, I got onto a welding site and a guy explained it perfect, take off both, put the left one on and tighten, then put the right one on and tighten, I did that and it worked! Just don't over-tighten or you gotta do it again. You made my day for answering though!
It says in the instructions with my abrasive cut off blade not to use it if it has been dropped. Dropped how far and how hard? Doesn't make sense. Can you test the blade to se if it is ok with this test?
fantastic
Sunil Ghorpade Thanks Sunil!
thxs!
Great video! Very good information. The test can only done with the wheels removed from the grinder right?
Cheers!
That’s correct
I saw the video I ran away in the workshop and made the test.. what do you think hapend?one of the stones have crack that cloged noise could be heard, that is when i've remember that once i dropped down..and broken her
zoltanlucian Well I am glad you saw my video then! Hopefully it saved you from getting seriously injured. Thanks for sharing!
This may sound like a silly question, but does tone matter? Or pitch (not sure what it's called) the ring is there, but one wheel is a little higher of a ring, like two different bell sounds. Hope I'm making sense:-) Thanks!
Bettina Stepek If they have a clear unbroken "ping" or "ring", I would say they are fine. If there are cracks, it is going to sound fast and hollow. I would assume you are hearing different pitches since the stones are a different brand or grit.
Bettina Stepek Different diameters will emit different ring tones (resonances). The pitch is not nearly as important as the decaying duration of the ring tone.
Solitaire 514 thanks, that's exactly what I was wondering. They seem to both be ringing just fine, but they were just a bit different. :-)
Solitaire 514 Question: I found an old power kraft bench grinder wheel. Its a 6 × 1 × 1/2 vitrified aluminum oxide. The max rpm label was worn off. My bench grinder is 3450 rpm. Do think its safe to use? After ring testing, which I already did. Thanks
does this apply to an angle grinder?
yes but you have to dangle the grinder upside down by its chord and stand on one leg to reduce vibration through the tool
👍💯
do you suggest buying grinder wheel online ?
Imagine it's a Pizza... Now I'm hungry. #1800PAPAJOHN'S
Steve-O!!!
No kidding! It's a compliment though.
do an internet search for grinding wheel injuries... that's no joke
A ping rather than a ring.
you kept me 4 minutes watching a stupid grindstone
And now you learned something new. You’re welcome. 😉👍
