I am 67 years old, and wish I had viewed this earlier. Two days ago I put a grinding wheel on my grinder, used one, I was grinding the nubs off a drill bit shank to get it to fit in the drill index again. When I started the grinder there were no odd sounds or vibrations. As soon as I touched that bit to the stone it exploded, and I mean exploded! One piece hit me in the chest and than flew and hit my jaw. A few bruises and small lacerations, but no ER visit. I was lucky, it could have been sooooo much worse. Thanks for getting the ring test info out there!

Thanks for the video. Great advice. One of these wheels exploded on a guy in our shop. Luckily he was wearing an ANSI rate face shield plus safety glasses underneath. Some of the shards from the wheel went right through the face shield and actually got lodged in his safety glasses. Without both layers of protection he probably would be blind. Even so, he was lucky that he wasnt seriously injuried. What do you value more: a few moments of your time or your eyes, fingers, or even life? Complacency costs lives. Always check your equipment before using.
Can you provide more details. What size grinding wheel? Was the grinding wheel heavily used? Was it recently installed? Was it laying around the shop prior to being installed? Or was it a brand new wheel that just "randomly" failed?
This is by far the best ring test video out there! Having both with & w/o crack sounds immediately next to each other, and some other videos didn't seem to be hitting the cracked one the same, almost like they're trying to exaggerate the thud sound, which just makes it harder (for us) to determine the difference between the two sounds. Sorry for the rant:-) I have a question too, my two wheels both ring, but the tones (or pitches?) are different, like 2 bells. Is that normal, I would think so, but just wondering your thoughts. I have an old Chicago 7320, works great!

What the aluminum does is lodge in the wheel because it is soft. It wedges between the grains & pries them apart, starting a radial crack. That is why the wheel explodes.
It would be helpful to know more details about your grinding wheel. Was it an 8" grinding wheel? Because an 8" grinding wheel is not supposed to run at 3,450 rpms. If you do calculations, the speed on an 8" grinding wheel is exponentially higher. It's unfortunate that most grinders run at a default speed of 3,450 rpms. The 1,750 rpm motors need more windings to run smoothly, and cost more to manufacture, so they aren't as common.

Very good video, Your a lucky guy if there was no serious injury when that wheel exploded. I was working with a guy a few years back and that happened to him when running a grinder, he all but lost his lower jaw bone he still in not fully recovered and prolly will never be. Safety first when around spinning grinding wheels. 5*****
Studying safety standards, my material referenced a "right test". Your video did a great job explaining this new concept. However, referencing other material i did notice you should not use gloves while using grinders. Since the purpose f the video is to be treated as a "safety related", i think it would be imperative to example high safety standards in every manner possible. Just tryin to look out~
SubArcticWolf Tools & Outdoors, Yup, same with long sleeve shirts - they're a no-no, or at least keep them rolled up. Any rotating tool can cause an injury - whether it be a hand drill or a drill press, etc .... they all can catch on loose clothing or accessories and it happens faster than you can react.
It says in the instructions with my abrasive cut off blade not to use it if it has been dropped. Dropped how far and how hard? Doesn't make sense. Can you test the blade to se if it is with this test?

Joshua TOA I'm not sure about grinders but sometimes wearing gloves is more dangerous because the glove can get snagged In rotating equipment.

Unless the wheel is super heavy, it is much easier to hang the wheel on your finger.

Angle grinder wheels are a very different composition and have a different center. I doubt the ring test would work on them
