  • This is my second oil change on my 2018 KTM 390 Duke. The first time I had it serviced I had it done at the KTM Dealer. It cost $250. Come to find out I don't believe they even changed the oil. 1,200 miles later my oil light came on and my Motorcycle stalled out while driving to work. Thinking maybe it was me I let it go. Until I came home and the same thing happened. The Next day a friend and co-worker looked at my bike. We saw no leaks; However the oil was below the looking glass. Concerned I went to the KTM Dealer and bought a full service Kit to do it myself. This video show's what I found and how to change your own engine oil and where all three screens are on the 2018 KTM 390 Duke.

    just wanted to say I appreciate your video. found myself in a similar situation -- got my first maintenance at 800 and then at 2100 I saw smoke from the radiator. Both my coolant and oil levels are abnormally low, so going to fix both myself. thanks for guidance!

    Thanks for the video..I bought a 2018 Duke 390 from original owner with 1550. Oil change was done at 660mi. Up here in North Jersey I realized that it was low. But yes, KTM dealerships are crooks. Come springtime imma change the oil. Can you believe they dealership tried charging $50 to transfer warranty?!?

    I think those 390 engines just chug oil like crazy. I've had the same experience recently at 6200 km (3.8k miles), around 3000 km (1.8k miles) and 6 months after the previous oil change.

    You should have looked in the sight window. You would be able to tell if there was new oil in it at least.

  • @nigel439
    @nigel439 9 місяців тому

    You do have to regularly check the oil level on the Duke 390. Its been said that they do burn oil a bit and need topping up. So watch out for that one.

  • @kronomarine

    I know that the filter looked similar, but with the kit being for a different bike, I would have certainly double checked that part number on that new filter before I would have installed it. It could possibly not be the correct filter.

    My service light went on during tonight's ride. I pulled over and check when my next service is due, 158kms before next service. So then I checked my oil level and there was no oil in the window. I didn't get a oil warning light. So would the little to no oil level cause the service light to come on?

    If your leaking oil it’s not because you removed the front sprocket guard it’s most likely because you have a bad crank case gasket removing the front sprocket cover shouldn’t cause your oil to leak on any bike

  • @JQUICK21

    Thanks Justin! Is there anything I should be checking after every ride or at any time after my first service? The bike is a month old with 1100 miles and since it is so new, I just climb on it and go thinking surely nothing can be wrong or needing my attention. Obviously you have not filmed a video while resetting the TFT screen after service because I was thinking I could find it in your Channel line-up.

      I will see if I can get the information again from a friend of mine, but something is wrong with my bike. I have 2,100 miles ish on mine and had the oil originally changed at the recommended service. Now they swear they changed my oil, but when the oil light came on and I did the oil change only half of the capacity came out. I took it back for an oil consumption issue. They put 2 miles on my bike said they couldn't find any leaks and that they were no longer a KTM franchise so even if it did have a problem they couldn't do anything with it. They had my bike for two weeks. I haven't ridden it since. Not sure what to do. Do I ride it and break down or do I travel farther to another shop? For now I let it sit.

    • @JustinDowDIYcentralhighway

      I can't get a solid answer from KTM either, but if you can show proof of millage and receipt of oil and filter purchased you should be fine. Video everything. KTM Only offers a 2 year warranty and I have had zero luck when it came to an oil consumption concern. KTM Really needs to step up for those shops not willing to cover items under warranty. just sayin

    Hey Justin first of all great video. I wanted to ask if the 390 was still using oil after you changed it yourself? My little bro has this bike and I performed the first service for him and like you had to reuse the screens. He’s ridden maybe 800 miles since and no oil can be seen in the sight glass. I’m thinking there’s definitely an issue; found your video so I have wanted to ask you how this turned out.

    I wonder how much the tech made that serviced your motorcycle? The bill is very high, but I bet the tech was making a low hourly wage. What is minimum wage in California, $12? But there are no excuses for not doing the work you were billed for.

    Hey Justin. as I am writing this I feel like I know the answer already.
    I didn't change the O ring and the bike is now dripping just a little bit of oil every 30 mins or so from the oil filter area. Just a tiny little bit.
    And I assume it's because of the O ring. I guess I will find out now haha.

    Hi mate. I own a bandit 1255cc.
    The adjustment marks of the chain when set equal, the sprocket teeth then touches the chain to the inside side or are just beside it. But in order to make the sprocket sits centered inside the chain I had to not rely on the equal measurement of the tension markers on the swingarm!
    What should I do!!!!
    Should I keep the sprocket teeth centered inside the chain even though the chain adjustment marks are not even on both sides ? Or is it okay to make the sprocket teeth tilted to the inside of the chain and therefore the chain marks on the swing arm on both sides are somewhat similar!

    • @kendallas3705
      @kendallas3705 5 років тому +2

      Get the back wheel off the ground and spin the back wheel. Check sprocket to chain alignment and if the sprocket is rubbing the chain adjust accordingly. I never race prep bikes from the adjuster marks on the swing arm.
