After watching this movie I was so scared the martians would take my mom that I literally followed her everywhere, even the bathroom. I slept on the floor of her room. She tried to get me to stop but eventually she realized she just needed to let my fear run its course. It took two weeks for me to drop it

16:26 To answer the question of the whole year/day thing, a day on any given planet is determined boy how long it takes to make a full rotation on its own axis, while a year on the planet is how long it takes to make a rotation around the sun. This means that a year on a planet could in turn be shorter than a day on said planet. Mars is about 1/3 further the distance from the sun than Earth is, making its year longer, and it spins on its axis 3x slower than earth, making its days 3x longer.
But when I google “how long is a Martian day?” It says 24 hours, 39 minutes and 35.244 seconds. So that’s only a little longer than our days! 🤯 I googled that too when I was editing I don’t know why I didn’t add that
@@AthenaPOfficial Well in the video you did say their days are triple earth’s days, but that just seems to be the movie’s logic. Hope that cleared up any confusion 😁

As a kid this movie gave me so much genuine trauma and fear that after watching that movie with my brother and my mom, I refused to let me mom go and would not stop crying until i passed out from exhaustion. And even afterwards the next few days I would barely leave my mom alone because I didn't want to lose her. I love my mama. (I was like 10 and I have adhd so I was very emotionally unstable at the time.) Glad to see Aethena covering how fucking weird and traumatic this movie was! 👍
I have an old memory of Mars Needs Moms, think it was the scene when the mother was being deleted by the laser beam. I remember being Horrified; I ran behind our couch and was crying like crazy, my parents came over to ask what was wrong, told them that I was scared that was GOING to happen to Mom. Don't know if the movie successfully made me appreciate my Mom more or just scarred me lol.
Count me in for the interactive Mars Needs Moms screening 😭 (side note, I do have a narcissistic/abusive mom and she DID use this book/movie to guilt trip me lmao, you really hit the nail on the head with that one)
Ngl I think the scene where the mom gives up her helmet is why I love self sacrifice tropes now. I love that part still tbh but the rest of the movie was an acid trip.
Dude, the scene where the mom sacrifices herself SCARED ME SO BAD AS A KID. 😭😭 I think it was a mix of the uncanny animation and the fact that we are literally watching this woman DIE in front of her son. You're so brave for watching this girlie 🫡
I loved Mars Needs Moms when I was a kid. The only thing I think was terrible was the alien language. It doesn't work like a language, it's just the characters making random sounds, and they don't even make the same random noises so it doesn't sound like there's a matian language but rather they're just shouting meaningless sounds at each other ~ because that's what the actors did.
Even though this movie isn't considered particularly good by most people, there's just something so nostalgic about that uncanny motion capture aesthetic from the late 2000's. It's charming, in a kinda unsettling way. Also the mom screaming when she realizes she's woken up in space, 10/10 performance! Best part of the movie
I have distinct memories of watching this movie late at night at my dad’s apartment. All I remembered about it for a while was the stuff on earth and the other human’s mom dying
The scene with what happened to Gribble's mom was so dark. It's stuck with me, like she got straight up vaporized. That is so f-ed, made it worse that is was in space. It's already so cold, empty and dangerous, then you get that and it's scarring.
7:13 i can see how one could interpret the mother’s reaction as guilt-tripping, because yes, it is incredibly dramatic. however, i don’t really see it as the mother intentionally trying to make her son feel bad, but rather as genuine shock and her trying to think of a response back, but the words dying on her tongue as she begins to comprehend what exactly her son just said to her. i get the sense that milo, although argumentative and rude at times, has never gotten to the point where he has ever said anything that hurtful to his mom. so it’s not so much how tame his words are in comparison to other more heinous things he could’ve said, but more so how strong they were in comparison to how their normal arguments end. idk, maybe i’m looking too much into it. besides that, excellent video! i also have a soft spot for this film, so it’s good to see it discussed in a positive way!
i haven't watched the video yet but mars needs moms made me SOB as a kid i don't wanna hear the slander. IT'S SPECIAL. edit: it seems i've forgotten a lot about this movie
I feel crazy every time MNM comes up bc I didn't hate it at all. Folks complain about Gribble being immature but he hadn't spoken to another human since he was a kid so made sense to me. I wished the movie was more about him.
The skits in this video are mad hilarious 😂 the forced tears followed by a fart had me dying I swear I only never watched this cause the animation creeped me out lol
genuinely so in love with the way you recap story events its insane. the reveal with Gribble was always sad to me but the way you talk about that scene and the character development he goes through because of it really hits the nail on the head in terms of what made it so heartwrenching to begin with.
Oh that was Mindy Sterling as the Supervisor, neat I remember her as Frau Farbissina in the Austin Powers trilogy which actually had Seth Green in the two sequels while this movie almost had Seth Green as Milo or something like that
It’s my headcanon that John Carter (another Disney film set on Mars that was released *_the very next year_* ) is set in the same universe as Mars Needs Moms.
i genuinely cant handle watching this movie even though im an adult now. it traumatized me to my core and even seeing clips makes me sob 😭 this movie gave me night terrors as a child where i or my mom were abducted by aliens. this lasted for yearssss! its a fucking wild movie and im so glad you covered it because for the longest time i thought i dreamt the movie up cuz no one i told about it knew it existed!!
Damn, for some reason I remember Gribble coming back to earth and being Milo's new dad. I have no idea where this idea came from, but I watched this movie, like, a decade ago in my childhood and barely remember it.
Fun fact: Not only did Seth Green do the motion capture for Milo, but he also originally voiced him until his lines were scrapped and dubbed over by an actual kid, implying that Robert Zemeckis didn't realize how awkward it would be to watch a realistic looking child with the voice of a grown-ass man.
In a few hours this video will have thousands of views,is amazing I'm happy that you're growing, I love when weirdos like us show our real selfs it makes me so happy, that we have a community of weirdos that are just happy to be weirdos
That scene in the beginning with the kid throwing a tantrum for ice cream but then throwing the ice cream on the ground every time their mom bought it for them broke me in an inexplicable way it hurt my chest so badly to watch it was more horrifying to me than everything else in the movie. Somethinf about the parent still trying to make thwir kid happy and the kid just throwing the ice cream on tjw ground.
I liked this movie when I watched it, it surprised me. I was expecting to hate the Mom but I was on her side, and if anything I found it odd when Milo called himself a slave when she was doing the chores. I also remember hating Gribble at first but I liked how he changed after we saw his backstory. I felt a lot of heart in the story, even if it didn't always show up in the acting, though Gribble's actor carried 100%. Also I just didn't care about the aliens at all, their whole society and stuff felt like B-plot, I was in it for the moms. I think that if they ever remade this movie, or if it was at least traditionally animated or even live action, it might've done better, (also if they cleaned up the pacing a bit).
YESSSS!!! Honestly sometimes this movie feels like a fever dream because its so hard to describe and some of my siblings genuinely just dont remember it. BUT the art from the aliens live rent-free in my head. The behind-the-scenes was really cool to watch as a kid because they literally showed how they mapped alot of Seth Greens movements and faces down to Milos size and I loved the concept as a kid. I wont lie it definitely had me bawling at the end, with a newfound appreciation for my momma. LOVE LOVE LOVE to see this classic (in my eyes) covered by you Girl
Adding in little comments as I go here- YES, Gribble was *super* weird and frustrating to watch as a kid, BUT I think it made the storyline that much more immersive! Although he was definitely immature, thats just the point! HIS mom was taken away from him and murdered, all of which he either witnessed or later learned through the next mom abduction. He had no one to raise him or guide him, especially emotionally, once his mom was taken from him. AND he was no longer on Earth, meaning no other adults ever got to teach him these either. He had no way to "adapt to society" like getting a job or being in public. He truly just *survived*, and I have to imagine he had to have alot of whimsy and entertainment to just simply not go insane or possibly even off himself. I think especially once he came around to Milo and saw how "human" he was- missing his mom and wanting to save her despite their disagreements and dispite the unlikely odds, it kinda helped remold Gribbles perspective, and maybe even gave him some nostalgia of times way past. I think he also realized subtly how small Milo was, how much Milo didnt know, and how dependent Milo could be; therefore realizing how much he had come to grown/learn himself. Having Milo around ultimately helped him mature from his "kid stuck in a mans body" perspective, and that storyline I can appreciate.
This movie fucked me up. I have OCD and constantly worried I was acting like that kid and would make my mother leave or die because of it. or because aliens would randomly take her and she would be gone and it would have nothing to do with my actions at all so I couldn’t control it. wow maybe I shouldn’t watch this video
I FRIGGIN LOVED this movie as a kid. I remember watching on my grandma's old tv at like rhe dead of night cuz my grandma went to bed at 7. I cried for daysss at the scene when that older dude sacrifices himself for Milo. I can't remember if I thought it was going to happen to my mom but I just remember desperately trying to find this movie again but never being able to
mars's structure kinda feels like alternia from homestuck, instead of nannybots, there are lusii, instead of hatching from the ground, the mother grub makes them, the supervisor is the Condesce, but it just feels similar
This movie was like a fever dream from my childhood 😂 There's scene thats really impactfull like Gribble losing his mom and the mom giving Milo her helmet Say what u want the movie has its moments
Actually that slur from Gribble would make sense, how long has he been on Mars and what year was he at at the time his mom was kidnapped and it's not like a kid who probably isn't at grade where this stuff is taught, probably doesn't know enough to just tell him it's not ok to say that word, heck is the time in the movie our time or in the past where Natives were still mislabeled Indians. And to the people making a Mountain out of a molehill over this, Free Palestine.

My mom bought me a copy of Mars Needs Moms the day Borders closed and I loved it. So, I was excited when I learned a movie based on the book was coming out and then I was very disappointed I when it finally watched it. However, I’m glad you were able to appreciate it!
I always liked this movie, and know that I’m a bit older I can fully understand the story of this movie and how traumatizing it is some times. I was talking to my Dad about the movie and he was telling me he couldn’t watch the movie because he’d cry since he knew for a fact that he would have done the same thing Milo’s Mom did for Milo by taking off her helmet to save him and the conversation had almost got me sobbing.
My experience with this movie was when it was first released and they just aired it on Disney Channel one night. And I was SOBBING at the scene where Gribble's mom died. Its the only move this far to genuinely make me cry which is really tough to do.
My friends used to have an inside joke where we'd say the name of this movie to each other like it was terrible news. Like we'd act shocked by something on our phones and when somebody asked what happened you look at them like sombody died and tell them "Mars Needs Moms"
35:17 this. this statement right here i wholeheartedly agreee with. I know it's fun to trash on things we consider "bad" but every human labor has value, and we should remember this more than ever
Also, the score by John Powell is the only good thing I remember about this feature. I mean 2011 was a big year for him composing the music for this, Rio 1, Kung Fu panda 2, and Happy Feet 2. He's currently working on That Christmas for Locksmith animation and Netflix at the moment
All I’ve seen of Mars needs moms before this was like a small clip from the beginning of the movie several years ago when I was a kid I too avoided like the plague because I heard it was the worst movie ever I’m glad you decided to do a breakdown on it I have new respect for it. The scenes where Gribble’s mom died and Milo’s mom almost died legitimately made me start tearing up for characters I barely knew about but I guess I could myself in their shoes as some who’s really close to his mom. Also Athen I think this is one of my favorite outfits from you it’s a lot more simple than the others but still amazing work the Red and orange hair is super lively and the pink on the face and shirt bring it together even more. The crown is amazing too I like that it’s made of all those individual space rocks beautiful work 🔥 also really cute nails I like the rusty red color on you .
I saw Mars needs Moms when it came out and it was always a distant memory and I only remembered the boy saving the mom. I was convinced it was a fever dream until last year.
I also watched this movie recently & was really touched by Gribble & how they handled his story. I really felt for how lonely & isolated he must have been hiding from the aliens on Mars for years. But overall it's a really silly & fun movie & I don't think it deserves all the hate.
I wasn't going to bother commenting how much I love your new hair, because I figured a bunch of people probably already had. But since you asked, I love the new hair 😂 I was wondering to myself while I was watching if you had done it yourself, I dye my own hair in vivids all the time and have been doing neon pink and orange since Valentine's Day lol. The way that it looks solid in some places and like an overlay on your natural hair and highlights in others is so cool. ❤
If you ever talk lore of video games. The chibi robo series is nuts. Namely because I can confirm in the world the game is in, humans have shows that are in the tokusatsu genre
This movie honestly made me think Seth Green (yes, that Seth Green. Chris Griffin Seth Green, TMNT 2012 S3-5 Leonardo Seth Green) was a lot younger than he was. Like I thought he was at least a few years older than me when I was a kid when this movie came out. I didn't watch the Second Scooby Doo movie, and I purposefully blocked the Austin Powers movies from my brain cuz... I would rather not get into it... So when I saw Seth's name pop up for TMNT 2012 in season three, my brain went "Oh! He might've been a bit older than I initially thought." Only for years later to realize "Oh wait. He's also Chris Griffin"
So fun story: one of my English teachers in high school worked on this film as I believe he used to work for a company that would basically help edit scripts or something along those lines. All I remember is that this was one of the last big films the company worked on and that my teacher tried to help make the film better but it didn’t really work out. He did get his name in the credits of the film and the movie itself became a running joke in my class
I saw the spider kids show at the end and I just... A repressed memory surfacing type moment. Vague memories of this from when I was 3 or something. That's crazy.
Fun fact; I made my family watch this for two whole days. Let me just say, the belt has never gotten that much use since then. Ps, I am fine! Don't worry.
I want to defend the slow door shut at the beginning of the movie. Well, the tear might have been forced, but I always thought she was just trying to give Milo a chance to apologize. What he said hurt her, and she wanted him to at least take it back, but Milo is stubborn in this scene. It was definitely dramatic, but I think she was justified.

@@isaiahdooley5953yeah I don’t know why I didn’t include the fact that I KNOW HOW DAYS WORK! My brain is mush 😭 (I appreciate your comment I just hate the brain fart it took me so long to smell ahhhhh)
@@AthenaPOfficial it’s ok! Some brain farts are stinkier than others, and sometimes they’re brain shits. My brain does that at least once a day.
@@isaiahdooley5953I feel like this was full blown brain diarrhea I’m so embarrassed hahaha the fact that I googled the mars hours in a day while editing too and didn’t put it in??? Appreciate your comment so so much! Thank you!!
The crown??? The hair??? The adorable Cinnamaroll overalls??? Excuse me??? Incredible!!!
This movie scared me so much as a kid. I don’t remember it that well I felt like the aliens tried to vaporize the moms brain
The whole entire mom!!!
Shit I’m so sorry!!! 😭 the screening will be so fun though!
Therapist: Matthena Patt doesn't exist, she can't hurt you
Matthena Patt: 9:40
Even though this movie isn't considered particularly good by most people, there's just something so nostalgic about that uncanny motion capture aesthetic from the late 2000's. It's charming, in a kinda unsettling way.
Also the mom screaming when she realizes she's woken up in space, 10/10 performance! Best part of the movie
"We should really try to uplift the good parts of bad art" 100% agree 💪✨
Mars Needs Moms is a movie I will always like, even if everyone hates it.
This movie fucking traumatized me as a child
POLAR EXPRESS MENTIONED I REPEAT POLAR EXPRESS MENTIONED MOCAP MARAUDERS UNITE!!!!!!!
I remember seeing this with my mom and both were crying when she sacrificed herself. Also the big dude mom's death and him stranded is very sad.
I have distinct memories of watching this movie late at night at my dad’s apartment. All I remembered about it for a while was the stuff on earth and the other human’s mom dying
The hair!!!😭😭 this is the best/healthiest it’s ever looked, goddamn this is your color
My cousin forced me to watch this on loop for hours straight lol. We made fun of it the entire time because that's how we watch movies

YOU'VE UNLOCKED A WHOLE NEW CHILDHOOD MEMORY!!! Why did I think this movie was a fever dream I made up from my childhood???
The Bo Burnham dad reveal was a more dramatic twist than the titanic
i haven't watched the video yet but mars needs moms made me SOB as a kid i don't wanna hear the slander.
Again. _Star-Lord_ gets a pass, but not this guy?
Exactly, gribble being immature is literally pivotal to understanding what he's been through and who he is as a person
The skits in this video are mad hilarious 😂 the forced tears followed by a fart had me dying
I swear I only never watched this cause the animation creeped me out lol
genuinely so in love with the way you recap story events its insane. the reveal with Gribble was always sad to me but the way you talk about that scene and the character development he goes through because of it really hits the nail on the head in terms of what made it so heartwrenching to begin with.
0:01 is so relatable though I do the same thing help.
I LOVE YOUR CINNAMOROLL OVERALLS AAAAAA
Seems like the A in Athena P. actually stands for Aliens! The more you know...
I somehow meshed this movie and Planet 51 in my head so I 1000% thought this movie was way worse than it actually is
i genuinely cant handle watching this movie even though im an adult now. it traumatized me to my core and even seeing clips makes me sob 😭
this movie gave me night terrors as a child where i or my mom were abducted by aliens. this lasted for yearssss! its a fucking wild movie and im so glad you covered it because for the longest time i thought i dreamt the movie up cuz no one i told about it knew it existed!!
I thought there was going to be a reveal that Ki was raised by Gribble's mom robot.
We need descendants lore eventually
Also that soundtrack tho
Yes please! Especially after Rise of Red just came out.

It SHOULD be a cult classic and I’m so down for a rocky horror style watch party
I loved this movie as a kid, as an only child who only had a mom in his life it really spoke to me.
I agree, my mother would've definitely gaslighted my sister and I with this book if she was the tiniest amount of booksmart 😅
Honestly you sold me on MNM when you talked about the things we could do at a screening of it, I'm so in now
That scene in the beginning with the kid throwing a tantrum for ice cream but then throwing the ice cream on the ground every time their mom bought it for them broke me in an inexplicable way it hurt my chest so badly to watch it was more horrifying to me than everything else in the movie. Somethinf about the parent still trying to make thwir kid happy and the kid just throwing the ice cream on tjw ground.
The mewing joke made me laugh outrageously hard 💀
OKAY OKAY OKAY BUT LIKE CAN WE TALK ABOUT ATHENA'S OVERALLS FOR A MINUTE CUZ THEIR MY SOULMATE NOW OMG THEY'RE SO CUTE =0
This movie was like a fever dream from my childhood 😂
There's scene thats really impactfull like Gribble losing his mom and the mom giving Milo her helmet
Say what u want the movie has its moments
I was questioning on why the aliens were thicc as a kid.( you see that I have been on the internet for a long time with long breaks too.)
I am down for these gimmicks while watching the movie. I was dying laughing
Athena is out here saying the things that need to be said. Mars Needs Moms is not a bad movie
I ADORE the tradition ideas for group watches!!
Thank you for another awesome video! Mars needs Mom is a childhood classic admittedly 😅and of course Mindy Sterling is an icon ❤
The skits are genuinely so fucking funny. Like the amount of times I rewatch them is wild
Thank you so so much that makes me so happy to hear!! 🤩
From an in-universe standpoint it makes sense, but it doesn't mean it should've been in the movie!

I wish I had friends like that lmao
35:17 this. this statement right here i wholeheartedly agreee with.
Girrlll the orange hair looks so good on you! Especially with that purple eye shadow!
When the hair is ✨hairing ✨ I love it
I saw Mars needs Moms when it came out and it was always a distant memory and I only remembered the boy saving the mom.
To be fair, we can't breathe about 70% of the fluid covering the surface of our planet either
I remember seeing the beginning to his movie and being traumatized. That's it
I wasn't going to bother commenting how much I love your new hair, because I figured a bunch of people probably already had.
I watched this movie as a really young kid so I always thought it was life action
this movie felt like a fever dream and im so glad that looking back on it it still is in the best way
Fun fact; I made my family watch this for two whole days.
I like your new hair a lot! And I loved this video! A thousand percent agree the movie doesn’t deserve the hate it gets.
