I will never not refer to that British actor as “The guy who played Mason in Wizards of Waverly place, the pillow lips one.” I don’t think I’ll ever be capable of registering and logging his name into my brain.
I think the “them dating ruined the friendship” thing was just a popular tween/teen tv thing in the 2010s. Girl Meets World, Austin and Ally, and the Vampire Diaries all tried to play with this trope too. Makes a good excuse for a multi-season on again off again relationship, or a reason for a show to refuse to experiment with a pairing at all. Still doesn’t make any sense as a trope though
You obviously have left an impact on me because When you said that you hate when a show says that they're really good but they suck at singing, all I could think about was Violet from WordGirl
I used to watch faking it at least once a year; the drama, cringe, and characters were peak guilty pleasure. Side note: Felix was my absolute favorite character, as I remember it he was the most grounded character out of the whole cast.

i was so pissed when they had amy sleep with liam. Up until that point the show had heavily implied she was a lesbian. They really decided to go with the 'lesbians will sleep with guys' route. obviously i had to hate-watch it for the train wreck it was. but they could not come up with a more unsatisfying ending. they know their audience was rooting for karma/amy as that was the crux of the show and then they just find replacement karma to put amy in a relationship with because i guess making karma bi was too much??? even though that's what they were building up to?

32:06 I agree with that! My partner and I were friends for years, and we ended up becoming a couple (going on 2 years strong after being friends since 4th grade). I kept hearing things like "Dating your friends only makes drama!" and "You're going to drive a wedge between you two and your other friends!" (we had another strong mutual friend at the time), but I find that it just takes communication and healthy boundaries. We still go out to tea places and hang out and make crafts just like we used to when we were just friends, but now there are sleepy cuddles involved as well :]

Bro, this was one of the shows middle school me was watching late at night on MTV (or when nickelodeon switched to nick at night). I recently rewatched Faking it, and omg, "progressive and problematic" is kind of the best way to describe this show.

"Two people in love with the same person, hurt by the same person, do it. Does it make sense?" Well, teenagers don't make sense. Because something similar-ish happened to me. And i still think what they did remarkably stupid. *Flashback 10th or 11th grade* I was asked to prom by a guy "as friends". I said sure. We were in some clubs together and in one act plays (as lights/sound/stagehands) so i'd say we were decently close. He made the gods-awful decision to tell me he likes me at 6am at the start of a 2 hour busride to a one act performance. I told him i didn't feel the same, but that i wasn't going to not go to prom with him as friends for his asking. Cut to prom. Another friend of mine comes up to me and is all upset that she told a guy she liked him and he...said he liked me (bear in mind i'd spoken to this person maybe twice). By the end of the night, when the guy who liked me and the girl who got rejected by a guy who liked me had comforted each others' broken hearts...they started dating. That night. It did not go well and he apparently kept pressuring her into sex and she would come to me upset but then call him to join us while we were hanging out. In the end i had to drop them both completely out of my life Compared to my telling a guy i liked him: i said i had to tell him so i'd feel better but i knew he was gay and obviously would not feel the same. We stayed friends and even when we haven't seen each other for nearly a decade, we got along very well when we did meet up.
i remember this show and do not remember watching it at all but everything that comes out of your mouth takes me back and i’m like “oh yeah i remember that!” tbh i was probably stoned the whole time.
I was just talking about 'Faking It' with my mom the other day. I remember it so well because I was obsessed with it since it came out when I had realized I was LGBTQ. It was the only show I have ever watched every episode of as they were aired on TV because I was that obsessed.
Horrifying to hear this show exists! It feels like the writers were trying to dance in a minefield for views but they triggered multiple mines and then kept dancing with missing limbs. I understand why young people questioning their sexuality would be fascinated because if my parents didn't keep the TV permanently on fox news I probably would have been obsessed too.
I guess he was gonna do that typical trope of "We've waited so long for this moment that now that we're here it feels kind of bitter sweet." Where they make you wait AN ENTIRE SERIES for a couple to get together only for them to say it Just doesn't "feel right" with no real explanation other than they didn't want the ending the audience was expecting
Lauren's arc was such an eye-opener to me man. I had no idea it was possibly to be born intersex before but it has stuck with me ever since Faking It had it's questionable moments for sure, but Lauren's journey broadened my perspective much like DTNG's Adam Torres did Sidenote: Reagan is so fine, I am so bi! 😚
For whatever reason I’ve watched this video like five times and I just noticed that the UA-cam app puts in a tiny and frankly insane looking picture of Athena’s face in the bottom corner when it’s in full screen Also your videos are incredibly re-bingeable

I feel like I occasionally saw gifsets of this show but I never actually watched it. Am also bi so loved the bi makeup! Yay for bi (and intersex!) representation in media, but boooo for blatant biphobia (not to mention all of the other problematic aspects you touched on). I know Gregg Sulkin from Wizards of Waverly Place (and also Pass the Plate lmao), but was the actor who played Shane the main guy in GBF?? If so, him being the character that outs so many people becomes much more layered lol. (And if it’s not him then whoops disregard this point). I enjoy your commentary just as much as your lore! By the end of the night, when the guy who liked me and the girl who got rejected by a guy who liked me had comforted each others' broken hearts...they started dating. That night. It did not go well and he apparently kept pressuring her into sex and she would come to me upset but then call him to join us while we were hanging out. In the end i had to drop them both completely out of my life
Compared to my telling a guy i liked him: i said i had to tell him so i'd feel better but i knew he was gay and obviously would not feel the same. We stayed friends and even when we haven't seen each other for nearly a decade, we got along very well when we did meet up.
As someone who was outed when I was 13, I hate the sheer amount of outing in this series. Plus the casual underage relationships? Yikes.
Just started the video but I love today's makeup
i remember this show and do not remember watching it at all but everything that comes out of your mouth takes me back and i’m like “oh yeah i remember that!”
tbh i was probably stoned the whole time.
I was just talking about 'Faking It' with my mom the other day. I remember it so well because I was obsessed with it since it came out when I had realized I was LGBTQ. It was the only show I have ever watched every episode of as they were aired on TV because I was that obsessed.
I’ve never head of this show but as somebody who lives in Austin I always get giddy when a show takes place in my home
OMG THANK I THOUGHT I WAS GOING CRAZY CAUSE NO ONE AROUND ME REMEMBERED THISSS THAT SHOW IS WILDDDD😭😭😭😭
I liked holding hands, i wish more youtubers did that 😃
I think you're officially my comfort channel. Love you Athena
I have never heard of this show, but holy carp have you peaked my interest
Also love your "ally" look
For the EpiPen thing ,i give mine to who i trust most so i can see why the pain is there
I would love to see Athena's take on She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.
this!!
I literally never seen the show a day in my life and I was super invested in this video. Love every video you make, please make more. ❤
This video is a masterpiece. My favorite line was “you’re g - g-g-gay all d-d-d-day”
Horrifying to hear this show exists! It feels like the writers were trying to dance in a minefield for views but they triggered multiple mines and then kept dancing with missing limbs. I understand why young people questioning their sexuality would be fascinated because if my parents didn't keep the TV permanently on fox news I probably would have been obsessed too.
can relate w the “this is very ally of me” 💕💜💙
I guess he was gonna do that typical trope of "We've waited so long for this moment that now that we're here it feels kind of bitter sweet." Where they make you wait AN ENTIRE SERIES for a couple to get together only for them to say it Just doesn't "feel right" with no real explanation other than they didn't want the ending the audience was expecting
5:16 Athena, we were holding hands 😔 you cant just leave me like that
5:43 I didnt want to edit or comment twice, but I love this
First off; who, in this entire planet, names their child “Karma”????🤔🤨
That just doesn’t seem right
Her parents were also hippies also I respect that they tried something unique
one of my bffs named her daughter karma lol
@@kendelkx WOAH!!😲😵
Lauren's arc was such an eye-opener to me man. I had no idea it was possibly to be born intersex before but it has stuck with me ever since
Faking It had it's questionable moments for sure, but Lauren's journey broadened my perspective much like DTNG's Adam Torres did
Sidenote: Reagan is so fine, I am so bi! 😚
I had forgotten this was before the butt auctioning and I was like “oh damn when she’d get a new one so fast?”
Core memory unlocked 😂💛
Man, idk how you don't have more subs. You're for sure my favorite content creators
For whatever reason I’ve watched this video like five times and I just noticed that the UA-cam app puts in a tiny and frankly insane looking picture of Athena’s face in the bottom corner when it’s in full screen
Also your videos are incredibly re-bingeable
I'm going to be honest I have never heard of before but this lore it might matpat ( game theory ) very proud of you
Please do a video breaking down awkward and finding carter and all of these coming of age teen dramas that were out on mtv in this era because it was truly peak cable television and I have to hear you talk about it😂❤️
I feel like I occasionally saw gifsets of this show but I never actually watched it. Even if I don’t have firsthand experience with the subject. Also would love to hear your take on Awkward. because that show had a hold on me back in the day!
