Millions of SUV, trucks have dangerous front blind zone

- It's a surprising secret for many drivers. Millions of popular vehicles have a hidden blind spot that puts children at an increased risk of being injured or killed. That large blind zone, located directly in front of the vehicles, has contributed to hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries, according to safety advocates who are now trying to warn consumers.

Front cameras?!?! Just redesign the f*cking vehicles.
Auto manufactureres would rather sell you things you don't need, create problems we didn't have, and solutions that cost more.
It's not real American freedom if it's not ridiculous and dangerous at the same time.
American "freedom" means freedom for the rich to make as much money as possible. Without having to care about anyone or anything else.
Freedom is best, and hard choices!
The injuries caused from SUVs to children up to a certain height are also worst, more deadly. The front hits the head and/or they get under the vehicle.
In my opinion this cars should not be allowed in cities.
No one talks about how dangerous SUV's are to other drivers and especially pedestrians. The scariest part is that usually people who are bad drivers are more inclined to buy them as they feel a need to take extra safety measures to protect themselves.
Again, no one is blasting the automakers that they do not have to make these vehicles mile high tall! But I guess fans of these vehicles like how it makes them feel safe - and don't care if a few children have to give up their lives (I hope you noticed the sarcasm)
But SUV's are also bad for the roads as the wear on the roads increases exponentially with weight. It's why roads with a lot of trucks have to be resurfaced every decade while roads where no trucks or cars come can last for centuries.
I think there should be regulations on the purchase of vehicles above a certain weight. Key part is that it's by weight and not size. A station wagon has similar dimensions to an SUV but it's about half the weight cause it has so much more space.
"Safety advocates say requiring front cameras in all vehicles would reduce front over deaths, a statistic which has nearly doubled in the past decade."
You know what else would do just fine? Buying a smaller, and most likely cheaper, car. You definitely don't need an SUV to drive your kids to school.
Buy a car? How about building trucks/suv's with low heights? Only off-roaders need that height - not soccer moms.
@@NoferTrunions HOW ABOUT FEWER CARS AND MORE WALKABLE AND DISABILITY FRIENDLY CITIES
@@clarkj3396 That doesn't make any sense. You should suggest quit building cars with poor visibility in front of all places.
It actually does make sense. The US is chronically automobile. Most US cities are specifically built around cars, to the point that navigating one without a car is impossible. Americans have been sold this idea by car and gas companies that "having a car = freedom, therefore reducing the number of cars is an attack on your freedom." Personal vehicles are the most costly and least efficient mode of transportation. The US needs to invest more in public transport.
And this doesn't just affect emissions and costs. People say "kids need to play outside more," but ignore the fact that the outside they have built is no longer child or pedestrian friendly.
@@NoferTrunions It sadly does make sense. My husband (blind) is fully reliant on me to get around due to living in a car dependent area with absolutely no way to walk to any of the businesses fairly close nearby because there are no sidewalks. Nor is there any good public transit to speak of. Building smaller vehicles is a good start, but doesn't help everyone.
It's not an unexpected blind zone, it's simple geometry.
Well said. I am terrified when I have to drive my friends new 1/2 ton and even his new Colorado. And if you are cresting a hill, it is a total crap shoot. I had a 72 Eldorado Cadillac with a low hood, but it was a "mile long." Cresting hills was very dangerous.
Yep, if you are shocked by that front "blind spot" you are an idiot driver and a menace.
Apparently not simple enough for American buyers.
Surprising that these people never had a clue. Those huge front hoods obviously block the view.
Shows the level of intelligence and concentration people set aside for driving.
must they be that big though? Why? All the risk... and no benefit?
I understand people want to have ample of trunk space. We need to bring back more station wagons for this purpose.
And hatchbacks.
You don't need to build mile high vehicles for trunk space.
Wagons have significantly more space than SUVs anyway and they can tow nearly as much
wagons are perceived as "the pensioner's choice". as a result not even pensioners want to buy them.
This is a recurring thing in many accidents, for instance with kids coming from behind a parked car, etc, drivers confuse 2 things:
A) "seeing that there is no one"
and
B) "not seeing anyone"
the drivers in this test were under B), except they usually assume it's the same thing
These aren't cars, they're trucks and should be regulated as such.
Trucks were made low to the ground in the 60's and 70's. There simply is no need for Mile High Monstrosities unless you want to be perceived as a Big Man or BadA$$
They need to require cdl’s for these
You can thank CAFE standards for this. Fuel economy requirements are much looser for a larger vehicle than they are for a smaller vehicle. This is the primary cause for the shift to most new vehicles being taller crossovers, SUV's and pickup trucks. It's all to get away with less restrictive emissions by increasing vehicle size.
There is a loophole that the companies have to pay far less taxes for them. This is not due to some reasoning but due to heavy lobbying.
Also they have found that they can sell SUV's for more despite them being about the same cost to make. Because of the subjective idea that you pay more for more car.
This video makes me rage even years later.
3 years ago yet they just keep making them bigger.

You mean you can thank car manufacturers gutting CAFE standards for it
NO, height has nothing to do with CAFE - in face, reducing frontal area INCREASES mpg!
Thank You so much for this information.
I will be sharing this with everyone I know❣️
Do what you like in America. I'm in Australia. Unfortunately, these oversized vehicles are finding their way here and the road toll is on the increase for the first time since the 1970's.
i pray for you that these idiotic tanks never become popular. they are parasites and most people don’t care about how deadly they are.
Need to close the Light Truck SUV loopholes. Only reason they can even pump out these big trucks is because they aren't held to the same standards as sedans, for safety, crashes, or emissions. Not good.
amen but money talks and the people making cars and laws are in each others pockets too much for this to change. not that most people would want to, cause ‘murica. we americans are apparently proud of being ignorant suckers who fall for sales tricks and propaganda advertisements.
this is scary and should be shared more
These junk behemoths have been there for some decades, and ppl just realized the danger in twenty fking nineteen? Downright ridiculous.
Yes, that is how Stupid people are. I was shocked to hear that someone was actually calling out this problem.
That's unfortunately how it always is. A problem is ignored for as long as people can say with reasonable certainty "I t won't affect me"
That is until it has grown to the point that it will affect most. Also these specific behemoths haven't actually existed that long. The average weight of newly sold SUV's has increased by 25% in the last 20 years.
What they don't mention is that most pedestrians hit by vehicles, are done so when the car is moving backwards. Hence why backup cameras have become mandatory.
This is the problem with SUVs, along with their propensity to roll and the fact that they kill pedestrians at half the speed of a sedan. They need to be phased out. front cameras will only sol;ve some of the problems. Get rid of Stupid Ugly Vehicles, problem solved.
This is an insane stat, thank you for sharing it.
Yes, Death to the Stupid Ugly Vehicles.
Has anyone researched that these hyper tall grills and hoods are a result of NHTSA Pedestrian Safety mandates? These mandates were to minimize damage done to vehicles hitting pedestrians. They killed low front ends in sports cars as well as sharp edges, pumpers, etc.
How about getting the car makers to redesign the front of the cars!
No one even suggesting it's a bad design
The love of Americans of big polluting SUVs
Pointless SUVs
Then just buy a not so monstrous car
But what about my 5cm peepee?
...and nothing will change and cars will still keep getting bigger. Gotta love America
Why do americans think they need these massive SUV's.... come to europe, we use station wagons, and normal cars.. YOU DONT NEEED SUVS
I won't come to Europe. And you don't tell me what we need or don't need.
YES! Our pickup trucks look like Death Race 2000 vehicles designed to kill people. When you see one in the rear view mirror, it is clearly menacing - and most of the people that drive them act out their big, mean truck.
hell yeah man just listen to what car advertisements tell you what to want!! the american way!!
i love america but people are too proud of being manipulated by ads and salesmen. why be proud to be a sucker?
Do you really need the Big SUV? The real answer is no you don’t need it. But the ignorant and or selfish, and maybe stupid person say’s I want that SUV.
The auto companies are pushing these trucks and SUVS like there is no tomorrow for the sake of profit. Remember, the illusion of something bigger means it may cost more in dollars to purchase.
Aliens are watching asking "Are they really gonna kill them?"
I almost ran over a puppy in my yard .
TFW the M1A1 Abrams MBT has better forward visibility than many of the USA's most popular SUV/4X4 vehicles.
needs more awareness.
It's time to stop selling these stupid cars
Or if not, then make a front sensor or something
It's bad enough that american city planning makes it near impossible to live without a vehicle but you should not be able to drive trucks/SUVs without a work related reason.
I had a 1969 Chevy C20 (3/4 ton) pickup with a 396 engine. It was built so the hood and bed were as low to the ground as possible. There is simply NO REASON why these new vehicles have to be so tall.
but "muh wife can't drive gud" is a legit reason? /s
@@NoferTrunionsactually the size is to accommodate all the modern occupant safety equipment.
@@calebmelton5989 Size isn't the problem. Consider the Fiat 500 and the Smart Car.
@@NoferTrunions I know size isn't the problem.
This video is shear lunacy. "I didn't realize there was a blind zone" is ridiculous if you are driving a vehicle. Everyone knows you have to see in front of you! Duh!
It get worse: THE BLIND SPOT IS COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY: They are talking front facing cameras which is more lunacy because the ridiculous hood heights on these monstrosities is COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY. If you look at a sports car, the hood is very low to the ground. If you add 8" of ground clearance, truck/suv, HOOD HEIGHT COULD BE 8" HIGHER THAN A CORVETTE.
Unfortunately, monster trucks empower people. It's a real shame people with psychological problems or just plain stupidity are moving stylists to built these abominations.
Myself, I drive a 1974 Datsun pickup - it is like a Ferrari (!)
Get a smaller car. Or better still, get rid of your car and adopt a car free lifestyle.
With american infrastructure that is basically impossible
@@Katzelle3 true. Then let's make it possible.
@@pbilklobbyists don’t want this (but i do)
These are irresponsible drivers driving on the road. They didn't even know that their cars have cameras! Talk about how easy we can scam these people. Always do a 360 before driving your car people. Be responsible for what you buy.
Buy a normal-sized car is what you can do about it.
Know your surroundings
I’m so glad I have cameras!
Thanks eco gecko
The simpler solution to this would be installing a camera in the front of the vehicle and some detectors that wont allow you do move forward until the road is clear
to be fair the kids are sitting, they should be standing . it’s still bad but not that bad
Stop buying big trucks if you can’t drive/ park it. That’s the problem. If you’re not a careful driver you don’t belong in them
just be taller bro
Some of these SUVs have blind zones big enough for a whole-ass car.
Lol, some trucks are as tall as a grown up man's nipple.
@@Bhaidostyaar interesting point of reference
add a front camera and sounds, easy....
just put camera on grill and big screen on center dashboard. Visibility problem solved. you can totally see. Seriously I don't know why Car manufacturer doesnt put front camera and make it always visible from inside of vehicle. All vehicle should have it.
Or how about a smaller car
@@Katzelle3 some people need large car yet
@@takoyaki-gq1qj
They would be appropriately served by a minivan such as a Toyota Sienna
The real advantage of such a camera would be a down angle so you could see exactly where your bumper is when parallel parking. I had a 60 Cadillac and the trunk sloped down right into the bumper - through the rear view mirror it was like parking an old (i.e. low) truck with the tailgate down.
@@NoferTrunions it good to see blind spot too
Pay attention to your driving. Know what's going on!!! Pay attention to the road!!!!! The conversation is secondary!!!!!!!
