Great tips. The one I would add: Make sure you don't target a fragment when launching your collectors, if you do the limpet destructs after picking up just that one fragment.
Also another tip is to leave the refinery at the station but equip everything else. The limpets will ignore the fragments and just pick up the materials, useful if you don't like using the srv for surface prospecting.

Yeah, and I can' argue with that - that said I've only asteroid mined for materials a couple times as I just don't think about it. These days when I need minerals I just grind at the Anaconda crash in Orrere as you can get several grade 4 mats there then just trade for what you really need.
I throw a mining laser on my small errand-runner ship (was DBX, now Dolphin) for this reason. I have one on my exploration Asp too, just in case! Hardly ever use them, but it's nice to have the option. I wonder if switching the refinery off would work? Bit of a long shot...
Another tip. Before deploying a prospector limpet shoot the asteroid first and lock onto the fragment. If it contains at least 10% of the mineral you're looking for then its highly probable that the rock contains more of that mineral. Deploy prospectors at this point then mine away. Use EDDB to know which mineral sells well. I usually mine for Painite

You’re the new guy and you CMDR WILL be EXCELLENT for the few new and old next generation of Elite Dangerous player. You’re fresh and not beaten down by the grindstone. I wouldn't say I enjoy it but I certainly don't hate it. Actually in VR it can be really impressive as the scale of the asteroids is incredible. The first time I dropped into a ring I was pretty awe struck.

Great video! I'm really enjoying your vids. Very concise. The fragments come off the asteroid normal to the surface you are hitting with the mining laser. If you shoot the right area, you can get them to go under your ship. For instance, if you had aimed a little bit down in your side-view shot, they would have gone under your ship instead. This shortens the path your collectors have to take (since your scoop is on the bottom) and thus increases the rate at which they pick up the fragments. This lets you get away with fewer limpets/less space madness.

CmdrStar Srceam it's good for downtime when you don't feel like jumping back and forth between random stars honking along the way, or trying to shoot down pirates and getting a crap payout. It's stable, relatively safe, and good to put Netflix on another screen and zone out.

Note: If you have collector limpets active and jettison some limpets from your cargo hold to make space, it's likely that your robot friends will collect them and put them back for you. You may want to wait until you don't have any active collector limpets before dumping things to make room :) This happened to me last night and was very amusing. My work around was just to fire some prospector limpets instead.
As a mainly combat player the 500 tonnes to unlock Selene Jean is a bit crazy about 2 hours of mining is all i can manage before wanting to go crazy but guess that's the grind for you
Yeah, like everything in Elite rather than giving us something hard or interesting they give us something short/simple that we just have to do over and over and over and over and over. That said at least with this one it's how many tonnes you've mined in total so if you do it here and there it's not too bad. When I got to the SJ unlock I already had like 450 tonnes done.
Yeah I've had to start at 0 as having done alot of combat decent amount of trading and some exploration , mining has been something i never thought about doing and really after I unlock selene will most likely never do it again . Just gotta do as much as i can stand each play session till its done then refit my type 9 for trading again

This is a great video! I didn't bother with mining until the update, with deep core mining mechanics. I wonder if mining lasers are now obsolete? Or are they more for new players, to earn the cash for the extra tools, to crack the rocks open?

Ive been enjoying flying around in my python for a good week now. Damn good ship...nippy for its size easy to handle with decent combat and cargo capabilities. Literally just upgraded to anaconda...wat a shock! Conda is like steering a slug!! Love the cargo capacity and ive got a fighter bay. Wont be doing combat in it for a while...at least until c grade most modules and A grade important ones. Was thinking of trying mining...never done it so far

Would you buy a Ferrari with a Honda engine and donut spare tires? A smaller A rated ship is always better to fly than a bigger E rated one.

Yea the first time I went mining in my cobra mk 3 it was for low temp diamonds I found a hotspot almost fell a asleep trying to find an asteroid found one, refinery was 87% full didn't even get one sellable low temp, tried finding another only to discover that was basically the only astroid that had diamonds so I ditched it. Ye I was pretty upset cause I was trying to stay awake for not even one diamond.
I think it's remarkable that in trying to make an immersive game, Frontier leaves us to rely on a Google search and 3rd party website to find the best places to mine. Surely it wouldn't be difficult for them to make this part of the game.
I think Frontier does a pretty good job of providing limited help tools. Part of an open world sim is for players to figure out much on their own. CMDRs like Exigeous do a far better job than they will ever do, so I'm not eager to criticize them. I'd prefer they spent their time fixing bugs and developing add-ons.
I played elite 2 years ago doing taxi missions and If I remember they paid me around 2 mil for a short fast route. I never did really long runs for 30 mil price and more, I don't have time to fly 2 weeks to the destination. So how much can you make with this setup for full cargo is mining worth it?
Not a lot, but mining has since been updated with a lot more activities and is currently a very lucrative and much more fun endeavor. Find a more recent tutorial on mining void opals.
Another tip from reddit.com/r/EliteMiners: Only use A-rated Prospector Limpet Controllers. They increase the output from the asteroid more than any other rating. You lose out on minerals and materials by using anything less.
I'm not saying this is incorrect but is this published by Frontier anywhere or like everything else is the community forced to work out the RNG to see if this seems true or not?

Da** XD Thought Limpets could only be synthesised. Have a Collector Limpet on a Cobra for those Salvage Missions, where its speed & boost will let me quickly distance myself from the NPCs, then going into Supercruise
Now that simple boom data delivery missions just aren't paying enough anymore. I'm trying to get into mining so I can save enough to create a fighter build.
BTW as I've gotten a few donations I was able to upgrade my Adobe suite and will be using Audition for all my future videos. The audio quality is about to go up quite a bit - so if you see anything after my (upcoming) Pip management video I'd love your thoughts.
Narration and on-screen info waaaay too fast to understand properly. I'm new to this game and this was so fast I'm still no closer to understanding how to mine. Disappointed.
Well if you're looking for someone who'll be slow, boring, droning and waste your time there are many UA-camrs who will fit that bill. If you want someone who is clear, concise and to the point you've found the right channel. This is one of my older videos, before I added the progress bar and chapter marks - as I assume you'll need to pause and rewind, using them like a tool to get just what you need when you need. So if you'd like to listen/watch less and play more this is your channel - if however you'd rather listen to people talk about Elite instead of play it there are many that will be happy to waste your time :D
@@Exigeous It ought to go without saying that I - anyone - wouldn't be looking for such a person. Why would anyone want slow and boring? I just want slower. Your content was interesting but just much too fast for a new player ... so it is really the speed that is the issue in this particular video for my taste. The problem with rewinding etc is that it is still unclear, to me anyway, what you're actually doing on-screen (ie what you're buying or fitting and where it installs to), and since there is no slow-mo option it just means I am going back over the same fast footage. That's what I did. So I am sure others will find it useful, which is good, but for me, it's too fast to be of real use. I'll see what other tutorias are around, unless you have a better one you've done. Thank you nonetheless for taking the time and trouble to reply, I appreciate it.
Well again this is my style and why I started the channel - as there are numerous channels that will go very slowly, drag on, talk around the topic and waste your time. This also isn't at all a "beginner" tutorial and would be designed for a player with a good understanding of basic mechanics, that's why I cover certain topics quickly. As I said my videos over the past year or so include chapter marks and a progress bar so you can easily move around the video - if it's that I talk too fast, sorry that's how I talk, you can always set the video to 75% speed mode as I have gotten comments from others that do that. I always appreciate constructive criticism but in this case I'm making an active choice to make my videos in this way and it isn't something that will change. It is why I was the fastest growing creator in Elite history and continue to grow at a rapid pace, as most people greatly appreciate my style. As I said there are plenty out there who will go very slowly, covering a topic in sometimes 5-10 times as long as I do. I've seen videos where I convey the same information in 3 minutes take over 20 from others, that will never happen here.
Heres my tip (to add your already hood ones): Dont move your mining lasers while tou mine, so mine fragments are gonna fly on a same path. After some flight time they are gonna stop and pile up in a nice mass. So after you depleted the asteroid, fly your ship a bit above that pile, and tour limpets are gonna haul that whole pile to your ship in a seconds! :P ... Keep your lazy ass limpets busy, commanders!

No, just cargo or better said ore. It has to actually be refined and I think even sold but that I won't swear to.

Ye I was pretty upset cause I was trying to stay awake for not even one diamond.
I think it's remarkable that in trying to make an immersive game, Frontier leaves us to rely on a Google search and 3rd party website to find the best places to mine. Surely it wouldn't be difficult for them to make this part of the game.

I think Frontier does a pretty good job of providing limited help tools. Part of an open world sim is for players to figure out much on their own. CMDRs like Exigeous do a far better job than they will ever do, so I'm not eager to criticize them. I'd prefer they spent their time fixing bugs and developing add-ons.

I played elite 2 years ago doing taxi missions and If I remember they paid me around 2 mil for a short fast route. I never did really long runs for 30 mil price and more, I don't have time to fly 2 weeks to the destination. So how much can you make with this setup for full cargo is mining worth it?
Not a lot, but mining has since been updated with a lot more activities and is currently a very lucrative and much more fun endeavor. Find a more recent tutorial on mining void opals.

Another tip from reddit.com/r/EliteMiners: Only use A-rated Prospector Limpet Controllers. They increase the output from the asteroid more than any other rating. You lose out on minerals and materials by using anything less.
I'm not saying this is incorrect but is this published by Frontier anywhere or like everything else is the community forced to work out the RNG to see if this seems true or not?
/r/EliteMiners have a hard rule about never recommending anything less than A-rated, so I'm pretty sure they already worked it out the latter way.

Thought Limpets could only be synthesised. Have a Collector Limpet on a Cobra for those Salvage Missions, where its speed & boost will let me quickly distance myself from the NPCs, then going into Supercruise
Nope, that's actually a very new thing - you buy them in Advanced Maintenance.
Now that simple boom data delivery missions just aren't paying enough anymore. I'm trying to get into mining so I can save enough to create a fighter build.

That absolutely counts - if you look at your in-ship stats you should see your total mining activity there.

Yep, they sure do - check EDDB.io, go to the stations tab, enter it right there at the top.

Narration and on-screen info waaaay too fast to understand properly. I'm new to this game and this was so fast I'm still no closer to understanding how to mine. Disappointed.
Well if you're looking for someone who'll be slow, boring, droning and waste your time there are many UA-camrs who will fit that bill. If you want someone who is clear, concise and to the point you've found the right channel. This is one of my older videos, before I added the progress bar and chapter marks - as I assume you'll need to pause and rewind, using them like a tool to get just what you need when you need. So if you'd like to listen/watch less and play more this is your channel - if however you'd rather listen to people talk about Elite instead of play it there are many that will be happy to waste your time :D
@@Exigeous It ought to go without saying that I - anyone - wouldn't be looking for such a person. Why would anyone want slow and boring? I just want slower. Your content was interesting but just much too fast for a new player ... so it is really the speed that is the issue in this particular video for my taste. The problem with rewinding etc is that it is still unclear, to me anyway, what you're actually doing on-screen (ie what you're buying or fitting and where it installs to), and since there is no slow-mo option it just means I am going back over the same fast footage. That's what I did. So I am sure others will find it useful, which is good, but for me, it's too fast to be of real use. I'll see what other tutorias are around, unless you have a better one you've done. Thank you nonetheless for taking the time and trouble to reply, I appreciate it.
Well again this is my style and why I started the channel - as there are numerous channels that will go very slowly, drag on, talk around the topic and waste your time. This also isn't at all a "beginner" tutorial and would be designed for a player with a good understanding of basic mechanics, that's why I cover certain topics quickly. As I said my videos over the past year or so include chapter marks and a progress bar so you can easily move around the video - if it's that I talk too fast, sorry that's how I talk, you can always set the video to 75% speed mode as I have gotten comments from others that do that.
I always appreciate constructive criticism but in this case I'm making an active choice to make my videos in this way and it isn't something that will change. It is why I was the fastest growing creator in Elite history and continue to grow at a rapid pace, as most people greatly appreciate my style. As I said there are plenty out there who will go very slowly, covering a topic in sometimes 5-10 times as long as I do. I've seen videos where I convey the same information in 3 minutes take over 20 from others, that will never happen here.

Yeah, the first time I mined I didn't understand them so I did it all manually - to say it sucked would be an understatement.
Heres my tip (to add your already hood ones): Dont move your mining lasers while tou mine, so mine fragments are gonna fly on a same path. After some flight time they are gonna stop and pile up in a nice mass. So after you depleted the asteroid, fly your ship a bit above that pile, and tour limpets are gonna haul that whole pile to your ship in a seconds! :P ... Keep your lazy ass limpets busy, commanders!
