When the book Homeland came out I started reading it around 8:30pm and finished it around 4am. Never had I read a book so fast in my life. That's how good it was.
I don't think they would conquer all of it, they would definitely extend their influence in the short term (because their infighting is what keeps them to be the strongest they can possibly be over time so over a few centuries their culture would decay and lose it's edge over the others) but I also don't think they could take over the Ilithid colonies. These two races are the top dogs of the Underdark and I don't think they could take out each other (or even want to try to because of how dangerous the prospect is). So imo, if that scenario were to happen, the Drow would conquer most of the Underdark with some small pockets of Ilithid that stay out of their range, but as they start to become complacent and decadent over the centuries, said Ilithid will finally see an opportunity and you will have the different colonies start to make their moves as the Drow become weaker and expand their own territories in the process, forcing the Drow to retreat as they got spread too thin. TL;DR : If the status quo of the Underdark is broken in that way, I think it will ultimately benefit the Mind Flayers, and it feels extremely in character for them to just wait it out and entrench themselves waiting for when the Drow become weaker and an opportunity arises
Since he was mentioned, and he is by far the coolest character in Menzoberranzan, I feel the need to mention that Jarlaxle is in fact Yvonne Baenre's 3rd born son!
@@one_for_one this, is also news to me lol I just remember reading part of homecoming as a kid in the early 2000s n later my dad had got a graphic novel for my mom
Long time fan of Drow, but didn't actually know about the no building and no occupying abandoned structures laws. Given their penchant for killing each other and the possibility of rival houses eventually being sentenced to death, seems like it puts the city at a perpetual downard trend in power. I know that houses will often absorb a lot of the common blood, the nobles mainly being those put to death in a house war or destruction; but having nowhere for a new house to take residence is tough unless you're specifically pushing for an expansionist strategy. But, given it's a culture worshipping a chaotic evil goddess, somehow I doubt the law will be upheld should it come to a great detriment.
If i recall, noble houses cannot be reoccupied only if they were destroyed as the result of a House War conflict, as the empty ruins serve as a tombstone for the destruction of all of the losing house's members. However, noble houses not destroyed by a House War can be occupied by a new family of designated nobles or absorbed into a surviving noble house. Destroyed noble houses from House Wars can also, interestingly, be reclaimed as long as any member of the fallen house turned out to have survived, meaning that the victor house ultimately lost the war due to the rule that a House War must have everyone of the opposing house wiped out to the last member. So if one random member of the house just so happened to be on vacation somewhere and returned to find the rest of their family dead, that final member has the right to reoccupy the house as the new head and the house who destroyed everyone else would be designated the loser of the House War for failure to wipe out every member. This also, funnily enough, means that House Du'urden is impossible to destroy in a House War due to Drizzt wandering around the surface and refusing to go back home. As long as he's not confirmed dead, it's extremely difficult to officially declare a House War against House Du'Urden since Drizzt not dying during it would be an automatic loss for whichever opposing house attempts it.

I recently watched a review/abbreviated playthrough of the 1990s DnD "Menzoberranzan" computer game. I didn't realize that the game's title was the same as that of the city-state.
My eye is on Menzoberranzan's future... if, at this point, it even has one. As of the most recent book (at the time of this writing), Lolth has been slain on the prime material plane and will require at least a century or two to return, so among other repercussions, no magic for her clerics. A good sized chunk of the drow population has left for the surface after denouncing the Spider Queen, including the leadership of house Baenre, so the political leadership has been kneecapped as bad as the priesthood, and all of the city's enemies (and slaves) will no doubt be eager to capitalize on Menzoberranzan's current vulnerability, to the point that I would argue that chances are good by the time Lolth is able to manifest in Faerun again, the city and its inhabitants might well be GONE.

Very odd section of the video. Lolth absolutely did not apear personally on toril. She technically interfered indirectly by empowering Yvonnel Baenres magic to pull house oblodra into the clawrift. Too bad what hapoened to the city. I guess chess nasdad is not that bad alternative lol. Book lore. Go read them.
