  • I really don't know how to deal with this. Is there a need for my UA-cam channel? I don't understand the algorithm and I'm so confused! I can no longer do this keyword/algorithm/thumbnail chasing grind. SOMETHING NEEDS TO CHANGE for my golf channel to continue.

Steve, as I write this, your video has already had over a thousand views, so your opening comment about how nobody is going to watch this one is null and void! As for where you go from here, you keep doing what you're doing. The thing about golf instruction, in my mind, is that you can go over and over the same subject matter ad infinitum and people will continue to watch so long as you present the content in a different way. Danny Maude is a perfect case in point! As for what he's doing that you're not, well, I would wager (and win!) that Mr. Maude has a professional marketing team behind him that has helped him grow his channel to the point where the number of his subscribers is attracting attention from some of the equipment and ball makers. There is no difference in the quality of the videos that you both make. Further to that, you both present as strong on-camera hosts. In fact, your sense of humour and self-deprecation (and that great Scottish accent!) combined with your unbridled enthusiasm makes for a winning formula, buddy. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you ARE Eureka golf! It's your swing and it works. Maude's stuff, as good as it is, is just text book next to yours - nothing unique. I've watched your channel since the days when you only had 20 thousand subscribers and now look where you are! Stay the course, Steve. We need ya!!

Steve: I'm retired and 71 years old. I remember a time when one of my boys was young and he asked me what he should do with his life. I told him I could not answer that for him but I told him this: Whatever you do, 2 things must exist for you to succeed (besides $$, of course). First, you must be good at your job. Steve, you are very good at what you do and it's why I watch you. Second, you must love what you do. I watched this entire video because I feared you would leave for good. Grateful that you'll be sticking around. But you must find a way to love what you do and it appears you have come to the same conclusion. Best wishes and I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos.

Steve, I now live in Sydney Australia and have been a subscriber to your channel for a while now, Why? Because I really enjoy your simplistic way of helping golfers get better. The way you explain things is easy to understand, no gimmicks, no BS just honest help and guidance. The others you have mentioned are all doing really well, Rick Shiels may well be doing great on UA-cam but I would love to see you take him on at the game, my money would be on you. Please stick with it your efforts are really appreciated.
I was diagnosed with Cancer in Feb 2020 and was given 6 months to live. I was devastated. 16 surgeries later, intense radiation and chemo, a colostomy and I am still here, Why because I didn’t give up and made my mind up to beat the bastard deceased. I am now nearly 4 years cancer free and recently took golf up again after a 10 year break. Your tips inspired me to get out and play and you have helped me love the game again, so thank you. Life is too short mate, live for today and enjoy life while you can. There are no pockets in a shroud Steve, oh and I love Jelly beans but the ones they sell in Oz are crap. Hang on in there mate and throw the towel down to the others you mention and challenge them to a game, film that and your numbers and theirs will go crazy. Good luck Steve

Hidden gem golf courses in Scotland would be great to watch.
Scotland has some of the best scenery in the world. Stuff the palm trees.
As a terrible amateur golfer, I get into bad situations alot. Under trees, the rough, sand you get the idea. Never see any lessons from anyone of how to make the best of a bad situation.

I think this is an awesome idea.... Steve - you have an amazing camera manner, and we're sitting here in the home of golf with some of the best, and most famous courses in the world on our doorstep. You can deliver great content to the biggest golf market in the world, in their own language (albeit, with a Scottish twang 😂). Take a combination of your instructional content, on some of our best known, and hidden gem courses and I think you have something completely unique. You're not Danny Maude, Rick Sheils or Peter Finch. You are you, and you live in a far better location. A bit of traction in the US based on uniquely Scottish content and I think your channel could explode. I've been a subscriber since around 40k, and you continue to deliver.
Worrying about the algorithm is like worrying about pension. If you look daily, you'll follow the ups and downs too closely.
Looking forward to the new content, and the gold play button.
      Cheers,
      R

Would be great viewing to see you doing course vlogs. The courses you have in Scotland you'd be spoilt for choice. Got to be worth a try. You mentioned Rick Shiels and yes he has lots of followers on YT, but look at his content, look at the courses he's playing and he doesn't do tuition, not sure if he does club reviews now. His break 75 is a really good watch. Could you do something similar in Scotland? But don't give up what you've built.

Steve hang in there brother. I’ve had my youtube channel for 9 years and over 3500 long form videos and only have 23.5 thousand subscribers. You’re doing great man just keep doing what you’re doing and remember if you’re trying to do this channel to make money it will inevitably fail. Continue doing what you’re passionate about because that’s what rubs off to the audience. And if the money and everything else comes through in the long run, then that’s just icing on the cake, but you should be extremely proud of your efforts and what you’ve accomplished I would give anything to the number of subscribers and the amount of views that you get

Hi Steve. As someone who is 72 and has just survived a heart attack ( I was playing golf again 2 weeks later), and who lost his last labrador 2 years ago, I'd gladly trade places with you. I can't answer why the likes of Rick, Peter and Matt Fryer have such huge followings, but I think I can say why Danny Maude has. It's his massive enthusiasm for golf, and his very simple way of coaching. He's my number one teacher because of that. I get that you are down in the dumps, maybe because of your friend's cancer, but Hope you can pull yourself through this spot of depression. I'd love to see you doing some course vlogs showing us some of the amazing courses you have on your side of the border. Maybe take a mate along with you as some of the other UA-camrs do. I'm a subscriber, and look forward to seeing more from you.

I'm in my sixties and took up golf around 6 months ago after more than 20 years of a gap due to back issues. Danny Maude was the very first UA-cam video l watched back in August and l still dip into them now and again on long rainy days, along with Peter Finch, Alex Elliot and Golf Life etc. I think I've watched just about everybody at one point but Steve your instruction resonated with me the most by far. I've improved every aspect of my game especially driving (although l still need to improve on slicing and aiming!) Don't give up you are very good at what you do and being born and bred in Scotland the weather is normal for me but maybe a sneaky wee deal with the golfing holiday companies would enable you to do some stuff from abroad? Also persuade Wilson to help you out with a few giveaways?😊

One of the best honest golf vids I have seen. So powerful. It all comes down to exactly what you said. Golf is life. Life is not a straight line. Ben Hogan said if you hit a straight ball you got lucky. Life is a bunch of draws, fades, duck hooks, shanks and slices. It’s all how we prepare for them when it happens. Golf is all about preparation. Golf is all about learning. When you think you have golf all figured out, golf kicks in the butt to say, hey you have a lot more to learn in life. Don’t be so content. I have been teaching gold for about 18 years. I’m 74 (don’t have many jelly beans left). I have made hundreds of swing videos for my students. And this is the answer I get when I ask them or there parents if they watched them, studied them or practiced them and 99% of them give me the same answer, no with some type of excuse. Is it disheartening? Most definitely. But I look at it as panning for gold. You can pan for years and get nothing but sand, rocks and maybe some gold dust. Then one day out of nowhere when you are ready to give up you fine a good nugget that’s worth thousands. Just like life. Just like golf, just like getting a hole in one. It comes along when you least expect it. If it wasn’t for your videos I would have never got my first hole in one. I have a saying “when you are in the valley look to the mountain top and when you are on the mountain top beware of the valley. But never give up until that last jelly bean is gone. I love your content, the way you teach in the conditions you teach in, the beautiful scenery. I love the accent. Hoping as you move forward you will grow stronger, maybe add some content videoing you giving a student a lesson and during your videos walking the course just reference some of your past instructional vids. Always remember this great game is all about life’s lessons, you against you, you against the golf course. Looking forward to your new content.

More of the beautiful Scottish courses and scenery, and you just playing and talking through your game and shot selection and reasoning behind it. I have found that to be a great help in my game, and I learned it from you on this channel. Me personally, I love the look of the Scottish golf courses, and would love to play there (I’m in the USA). 100k subscribers is an amazing achievement but it appears the goalposts for being a high profile channel have moved up. Keep at it and fingers crossed you reach that critical mass and the subscribers will snowball.
I think you've got the fundamentals right - you have a clear channel brand based on technical coaching and your personal humour. You have a great, natural presentation style that 100,000 people like. In my opinion you should not change these fundamentals even if you decide to experiment with different videos.
Things you might want to consider compared to other channels -
    - please don't go down the clickbait route but maybe consider experimenting with different thumbnails and titles to see what works
    - maybe have a series of videos focused on a theme such as playing difficult lies, changes when playing in wind or rain etc.
    - what about a series working with 4 different players you coach helping them break 100, 90, 80, 70 working on all aspects of the game including course management, reading your lie and shot selection, short game etc
    Keep up the good work

Steve, there's a lot of golf instruction out there on UA-cam. While many channels seem to be carbon copies of one another, even to the point where their weekly lessons are nearly alike, your content connects with me. I've watched you for at least 3 years or more and gone back through your channel archives many times. I'm in the US and you're easy to understand and the points you make about the game and swing are so easy to understand as well. Steve, An interesting vlog.
I would adopt some of the 'variety' offered by some of the other 'UA-camrs' (inc Iona, Tubes, etc).
Do some (on course) 'challenges', inc explanation/coaching of shots.
Keep your humor and editing skills, that is one of your greatest assets!
Be an ambassador for the 'Effortless Swing' (and market/promote that), that's got to be a huge winner?
    Celebrities?
    Visit key courses/holes?
'Down to earth'/'The working Mans swing?
    Back to basics?
    The 'everyday' swing?
    Skill shots competitions (via invitation/video).
Subscriber problems (and how to fix).
Hope this helps! I am now recovering myself from cancer, and enjoyed my first game today (albeit a bit wet!) since my operation. As I head into retirement I wish to get back into the game, and having subscribed and watched most of your videos, will use these for skills and inspiration.

Long time subscriber here. You asked a lot of questions in the first half of the video … why are you low on views? Etc.
Later the reveal of life news.
I love your channel… but I’m Scottish and I Get it. We are a minority.
I play golf in all sort of shitey weather… as do you… again minority.
Cardrona GC is nice in nice weather but mainly looks a bit rough … not exactly Mike Malaska country … minority.
But your personality and transparent honesty is your USP.
Fk the algorithm , do what you want to do, be happy and …. and this is Gold….get some winter sun every year… we suffer from seasonal affective disorder in the north ( SAD) wether we believe it or not, it’s a mood killer and makes our life tougher than it needs to be.

Steve, I think your channel and teaching is brilliant. You were the first teacher who told me that my golf swing needed major surgery without fear of of rejection, and I am now a better golfer because of that. I think I watch your videos because they come over as well informed and unrehearsed, and I like that. Anyway I just enjoy watching you hit a ball and talking about it.
Please keep in mind that you don't have a production team. some of the slick content I watch has a production team to feed and these would definitely fail without a lot of subscribers.
By the way I've watched Danny Maude and others often but never felt the urge to subscribe to them. I can't stand the way he talks.

Love this channel and he's definitely helped me, esp with his advice on simplifying pitching and chipping. I would say, as a late-50s aging high-handicapper, that more of that - simplying the game, but also the thought process, is what I'm after. How should I think about the game? About each hole? What decisions can and should I be making with limited (and fading) skills that will enable me to keep enjoying the game? I feel like that's most of us who seek out these videos. The guys that are really good don't watch these, they are already good or have their own coach/instructor. So in order for these to resonate, they have to appeal to those living right where Steve is now - on the verge of quitting or, at the very least, wondering how much longer they can enjoy the game. Help me do that and I'm all in.

Steve, I latched onto you because I tried the open stance swing you are teaching. I then dropped it for a while, then came back to it and have been with it ever since. Although it works really well, not everyone needs what your teaching, and so more varied content I think will help. One of the other guys on here said about regurgitating content and presenting in a different way, if you add to that playing rounds at courses in Scotland, maybe the odd giveaway or competition for gear, teaching or subscription, it will appeal to more golfers and gain you a bigger audience. I always enjoy the way you present content and use you for long game and Dan Grieve for short, but do believe that golfers are always looking at playing in Scotland, but cant always afford to do the big courses, so maybe playing videos at medium to less expensive gems around Scotland. There is also scope for live Q & A’s as well as live or edited lessons. Keep going, I can tell it is a bit draining at times, but there is a value to what you are doing, and a few tweeks will pay you back !

How do I translate what you are telling me to do into actually doing it. I'm obviously not doing what you suggest even though i am trying. Steve.....3 items....1. From North Dakota, in the states, two years ago i decided to try to learn how to play golf having never even picked up a golf club. Your video is the first one i ever watched, and i never miss one. The fact that you showed me everything i know about this amazing, frustrating game speaks to your relatability because what i dont want is some snobby uptight F-ck stick talking down to me. 2. Of all the channels out there, you are on the top of my bucket list to play a round with, because you are as real as it gets, and that is what folks really want. Fake is what the world is turning into, and you give me hope for world. 3. My USMC bros and I have a saying "EVERY day above ground....is a good F--ckin day! " Keep doing what you're doing for the love of it...money comes and goes and if chasing that algorithm is pissing all over you love of what you do...F-CK 'EM...in the end true happiness is priceless, and fleeting. You bared your soul for the world, and your integrity will see you thru. Keep hittin em straight....most of the time. 😊

A really honest video Steve . I sense your frustration and also emotion cos you put some amount of work in . I see your videos as all instructional based and the others are more in the entertainment ‘camp ‘ . Like golf life etc . I see them as a different market share type thing . Danny Maude was a great comparison cos his are all instruction based and his coaching is not better than yours and wouldn’t say his accent is any easier to understand . I’ve often wondered why your subs are around the 100k mark . I’m no expert on UA-cam algorithms . Maybe a change in directional content could help and some advice on this from a much more creative person than me . The others seem to collaborate a lot more and market each other . Could you do that ? Play them in matches type thing ? Obviously it’s dead easy for me to suggest that and not easy in reality
Keep the head up mate . There are still many that really appreciate your superb content . 100k followers in this type of market ain’t too shabby but clearly deserves more

Listening to you at 02:49 on Tuesday 2nd of April, what comes to mind as I don’t know the process/algorithms for you tube is, i watch you when you put stuff out and go back to your previous content when i need reminding how to play golf, i thought you tube was the bonus on top of everything else you do, but realise the time and effort you put into it which is often not recognised, your humour , the occasional swearing, the mistakes, the banter, Scotland etc are what make us check out the videos learning in a good way at an easy pace , you being from Scotland and playing the courses up there is a huge wish of many like myself so maybe some of the hidden affordable courses pushed by you would not only give us insight and options to play but could by affiliation be beneficial in regards to rewards i.e. gear tests, playing deals, places to go etc as well as the continued tutorials on issues we golfers may find ourselves in when playing different courses such as links, lakes, hilly, flat courses, i for one will continue to follow you, in regards to jelly beans let them count themselves pal we do what we can with out planning every minute every second as what happens will happen its how we respond to the good the bad and the ugly that make us who we are, hope this make sense as i have had a wee dram or two😂….. just a bit more as i have half a glass left, the influencers you mention are sales people and living of the early times, there is less and less more helpful content coming from them which why you are stuck with me and I don’t watch their look at me entertainment, don’t get me wrong i am impressed with how they got there but not how they sit on their stuffed mattresses and push out mediocre content. Keep up the good work and if you need to take a timeout then take one but let us know for how long so we can do things until you get back like meaningful conversations with our partners, home educating the kids, sleeping, flower arranging, etc, stay strong youth😂

I'm not a content creator but rather a golf addict so I may not know what I'm talking about but I do know what I like to watch. The only suggestion I can offer - forget the stupid algorithm! Make videos that highlight why all of us are so addicted to this game. The promise of the next shot being our best is what makes this game so special. The joy that comes from hitting a bomb drive, a pure iron shot or a chip that finds the bottom of the cup.... Share that happiness (and sometimes the disappointment) that golf brings to the world. The night is always at its darkest right before the dawn.
As a subscriber I appreciate your content. I found the eureka method fascinating and have put it on on-course use. Perspective can change with age and circumstances and our lived experience of life and its ups and downs and of those close to us. The realisation that our time on this planet is finite, comes into sharp focus, and we question what it is we are doing and what we want to do with our remaining time. I know of one hugely successful individual who has a countdown clock of the average male life expectancy on their phone, they see it everyday, and they use it as a motivation in their daily life to achieve and focus on what is important to them.
Ultimately, if an activity, like being a youtuber gives you sleepless nights, or the stress if it outweighs the fun parts of the job, then make the decision that is best for you. If there was no more new Steve Johnston content, I would miss it, but I would understand and trust that it was the right decision for you.. I have watched your method for quite awhile and your technique has worked for me. I go back and watch many episodes again and again. Because your method doesn’t mirror the current pro style, younger viewers may be reticent to take it up. It is not as sexy in their eyes as they watch the tournament pros hit and listen to the commentators review their swings in slow motion. These folks (many of which never had any athletic ability) think that somehow they can replicate what the pros do. They chase every new club and gimmick instead of simplifying their swings. I suggest that you take several of your students and show them during lessons and on course and track their improvement from start to finish. Your technique is so valid more people need to see it from the view of senior, mid age and junior golf students- anyway, that’s my view from Arizona. Everyone that sees my open stance wonders what the hell I’m doing until they see how I can hit with so much more consistency than before- Thank you for Eureka

I've watched a number of your instructional videos Steve and they are always easy to understand and relate to. so thank you for that, I have noticed recently you don't appear so often on my feed and then of course I drift away. ( no fault of yours ).
This video I would say is less about golf and mostly about life, the crossroads you face is one we all do, I was 48 what feels like you the other day and now I'm 60. I'm considering all that beings 60 means and what life holds for me and my family in the same way I did at 48. True happiness is the journey you go on, the things that you look forward too and excite you on the journey is the enjoyment, the actual events are just a culmination of all that.
So do you what makes you happy on your journey, the rest will sort itself out.
    Take care

Hi Steve, Great, honest content. I think from watching the other guys, Danny, Rick, Liam, Andy, and so on. They all have people with them, guests, camera people, sound people. Tubes and Ange, Golf life. Golf can be an extremely lonely game, and to do what you doing, and trying to achieve on your own is incredibly difficult. Your golf tuition is great, easy to follow and we can see almost instant results. All these other guys are playing abroad in some exotic places, which I know costs money, but there's and old saying, "You've have to speculate to accumulate" Don't give up, we want you.
