The British Must Not Reach Virginia! - Battle of Guilford Court House

- The British launched their ambitious Southern Campaign in early 1779. They achieved tremendous early success, capturing key cities in Georga and South Carolina.
In response to the British invasion, America would send two massive counter attacks to try and push the British from their position, both of which would end in disaster for the Americans. However, American propaganda depicting atrocities committed by British forces inspired many Southerners to continue resisting.
An endless train of militiamen and volunteers began flocking from Virginia and the Appalachian mountains towards South Carolina. When the third American counter-attack army arrived, they were heavily aided by the militia troops and by the guerrilla insurrection which had been destabilizing the region. The Americans, under Captain Daniel Morgan, achieved an outstanding victory at the Battle of the Cowpens.
Following this victory, Cornwallis came to believe that the South could not be held without first capturing Virginia and starving the Americans of their supply of militia reinforcements. The head of the British army disagreed, and ordered Cornwallis to remain in South Carolina, but Cornwallis disobeyed.
Cornwallis and his army began pushing north in a race to reach Virginia before the American troops could gather and oppose him. This event would become known as "the race to the dam", and it would reach its dramatic conclusion when the American force intercepted the British at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.

Sorry about the Music from 8:00 to about 10:00. I port the videos over from PowerPoint. Sometimes when I port it to youtube, some weird errors or changes occur. I believe the music track begins to loop at 8Min so it essentially has two music tracks going until the 10-minute mark. While the timing isnt so bad (since the battle really kicks into gear at 10min), its unfortunate that UA-cam won't let me add annotations without 1000 subscribers, so I have no way of letting viewers to know they should skip ahead a bit.

Great video. But the music was covering your voice. Good choice of music! hit But I wish this was toned down a bit. Is there anyway to for you to edit the video to lower the music volume?

For some reason, youtube has been recommending this video to people all of the sudden. I just want to note for people new to the channel, this video has a clear audio error during the first 2-3 minutes of the battle where the music unfortunately loops and is louder than the narration. This was an error that occurred when I tried to upload the video to youtube and didnt become aware of us until after it was too late. This error is not present in the other videos in this series (with the exception of 1 earlier vide, I believe).
Tarleton was not a general, he was a Lt Colonel. Morgan was a Brigadier General however.
Nice work, but a couple of inaccuracies: 1) That Picture you put up of "Gen. Greene" was really Gen. Morgan; 2) The "Race to the Dan" was not because Cornwallis wanted to get to Virginia, it was because Cornwallis wanted to destroy Greene. Green needed to get to Virginia to refit. 3) 'Nathanael Greene' is how it is spelled. 4) William Washington led the Cavalry on the American right. 5) Green's strategy was to bleed Cornwallis army and he did that very well. Between The Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse battles, Cornwallis lost nearly half of his Army and Greene was only getting stronger.
Lower the music
Still cannot hear the narrative over music. Also, there is a significant portion where the positions and movements of Cornwallis are described but not displayed. Correcting that omission would clarify the campaign.
Ah I'm sorry to hear that. I would consider revising a few of my old videos (namely, Brandywine, Trenton, and Brooklyn Heights) but unfortunately I've lost the original file for the videos. Monmouth is coming out soon (the Battle portion of the video is already done). I've been focusing on being more cognizant of the background sounds. Animations are a bit trickier since I do these in PowerPoint and it will crash if I try to make too many things happen on one slide

This would be a fantastic video to watch, but the music overpowers the narration. I can only watch up until about seven minutes into it and then I couldn’t even make sense of it. Please try to redo this with the music at a lower volume it would be really fantastic to watch.
Music is still to loud I previewed the entire video. Just lose the music an interesting subject becomes an irritating submission. Too bad.

At 4:28 read the inscription in the yellow circle, " the South beings to crumble." At 6:50 the music drowns out the narration. Fix this. Keep making videos. I appreciate it. I had three ancestors at this battle.
Just a little correction it was called "The Race to the Dan" since Cornwallis was trying to reach the Dan river before Greene could cross into Virginia.
I live in Eden N.C. which the Dan river runs straight through Greene made a stand at Guilford Courthouse and although technically Cornwallis won the battle Greene Inflicted heavy loss' on the British and was able to cross the Swollen Dan into Virginia and was basically the turning point in the war.
Thank you for pointing that out! It's always great to hear from somebody with local knowledge. Trying to find some of the geographic information regarding these battles and events is fairly difficult since many of them have been forgotten about by most everyone but people studying the war. For example, it was particularly taxing to try and find the location of "Fort 76" and equally difficult to try and find out when it was established, and why it had that name. Unfortunately this sometimes leads to some guess work on my part, but I try hard to avoid that when possible (although, in this instance, the "race to the dam" was simply a brain slip I had while doing the audio recording)

Background music is way too loud. This video would have some potential if they could eliminate that annoying music.... much too loud and obstructs the narration. Nice try.

At 6:00, the picture you identified as “General Greene” is actually a picture of Daniel Morgan, not Greene.

It was a good talk, but was hard to concentrate on what you said as the music was too over powering and very hard to hear what you said at times.

I skipped it during the process because it is hard to know whether to characterize Lee as a traitor, an incompetent or merely somebody misjudged the situation. History hasn't treated him kindly, and while there is some evidence that he was after Washington's job, it his actions during Mammoth were not totally unreasonable
See if you can do Monmouth next, many history channels don’t talk about it much, but you make battles and events in so much detail
Thanks for your support, it means a lot. Monmouth is definitely on the list, I regretted skipping it but I was rushing a bit to get to the South. We really only have 1 or 2 battles before the war ends at this point, after that I plan on going back and doing Germantown, Monmouth, and perhaps an overview of the Indian conflicts in NY
Virginia was much bigger than on that map. West Virginia didn’t exist until 1863.

Ah sorry, that is nothing. I was trying to cover up a couple cities that were on this map that were not there in the 18th century
I highly recommend u drop the music. It serves no purpose and drowns-out ur vocals, making it difficult to understand u.
