The World Turned Upside Down: Siege of Yorktown

- In 1781, the American war for independence has largely come to a stalemate. The British, mainly under the leadership of General Clinton and General Cornwallis, occupy major coastal settlements throughout the colonies, while the Americans, under Greene, Washington, and Lafayette, occupy the majority of the American frontiers.
In 1781, in an attempt to break the stalemate, General Cornwallis would lead his men to Virginia, in an attempt to capitalize on the success of Benedict Arnold. However, before long he found his supply lines over stretched and his force relentlessly harrassed by American militia. He soon received orders from Clinton to move his men to Yorktown and construct a naval port.
Once in Yorktown, Cornwallis had essentially doomed himself. A French fleet under the command of Admiral De Grasse was entering the American coast from the West Indies, while at the same time, the French and American forces were unifying at Westpoint in order to launch some sort of counter offensive. When word of Cornwallis' vulnerable position reached Westpoint, the Franco-American forces launched into action.
The armies marched with all haste towards Yorktown. The French Fleet would engage the British fleet, led by Admiral Graves, in the Battle of Chesapeake Bay. Though the battle ended in a draw, Admiral Graves unexpectedly retreated his fleet back to New York. This decision allowed the French to enact a naval blockade on Cornwallis' position.
Soon Cornwallis would find himself surrounded on all sides. Though he patiently waited for reinforcements from New York, which Clinton had promised were in-route, the reinforcements would never depart the city. Within 45 days the Franco-American bombardment would force the surrender of Cornwallis' entire army.
With the surrender of Cornwallis, and mounting pressure from the wars ever-expanding global scale, the British would ultimately be forced to surrender and sign the Treaty of Paris in 1783. Thus, the American nation was born, and independence, at last won.

I live in Gloucester and would walk by the cave Cornwallis hid in just casually walking the beach, I would stare into it and try to imagine what was going through his head. Great video man!

I know this is 3 years old, but it is apparent you have a passion for history. Do not give up on it. My advice, is for you to be more confident when you speak. Maybe even rehearse the script a few times before recording, so you do not stumble. That always worked for me! I hope you do not think I am criticizing you. I really enjoyed the video.

This was excellent. One of the best visual histories of the battlefield I have seen. Great job. I visited Yorktown last summer and did the self guided tour. The size of the battlefield is deceptively large. The areas where the American and French armies kept troops, horses and all the equipment necessary to support the army extends for a couple miles of now wooded terrain. The field where the British surrendered their troops and arms is preserved. The 2 British redoubts have been reconstructed; one is falling into the river and is closed to tourists.

Two of my ancestors on my mother's side were lieutenants under Washington at Yorktown. One was my grandfather's ancestor and the other was my grandmother's ancestor. My grandfather's ancestor was from Staunton, VA and my grandmother's ancestor was from Philadelphia, PA.

I feel it is a insult to the Americans that fought very hard against the British that O'Hara tried to surrender to Rochambeau instead of Washington first.
Definitely meant as an insult to the Americans. Although, it could be easily argued that this victory really was a French one. It was the French navy, artillery, and infantry that allowed this to happen. Heck, it was even the Frances planning. But Washington had the vision and will power to move the American troops and begin the entrenchment. He passed the sword to Benjamin Lincoln because, if Cornwallis second in command was going to surrender, then Washington's second in command was going to accept. Its one of the few times we can witness Washington demonstrating pettiness (although obviously justified)

I agree with Lincoln - it was an insult to the Americans. And intended as such, though the French and American commander’s classic responses have been immortalized in every retelling of the Revolutionary War Ever since! British contempt for Americans and their victories continued long after Yorktown and the end of Revolutionary War. A British Naval practice of taking American sailors and forcing them to serve in the British Navy-as if they were still colonists subject to being drafted-continued into the 1800’s. This insult to American sovereignty sparked another war with Britain. The British invaded the US. They marched on Washington D.C. (and burned down the White House), and took New Orleans. (War of 1812).

Hey, enjoyed the video. On the next one you should consider mixing the voice-over a bit louder than the music. Also not a huge deal but there were several parts where you stumbled over the script, I think things would feel more polished if you took the time to reread those parts.
I think you're right, I've been in a consistent struggle to get the music/audio balance right. Regarding the script, the issue there is that I have to record while also working the animations. I need a microphone I don't have to hold so that I don't have to try and memorize the scripts

The most impressive thing about Yorktown is that George Washington managed to convince the British that a siege was going to assault New York. When the entire time he was hoping to win the south and defeat Cornwallace. He kept it all to himself until the last moment when he sent the orders to the army to move against Yorktown. What a brilliant tactician
Not really, Washington intended to attack New York all along, he was literally forced to move against Yorktown by Rochambeau going south without permission.
Washington's spy ring could have planted the false intel.
I think that the miracle is that more than the victory itself, it's the fact that Rochambeau succeeded in convincing the stubborn Washington to abandon his dream to take NY which was almost impossible...
The miracle is the victory won by Washington that successfully and brilliantly outlasted a superior British force. You're just pissed off that he succeeded.
@@eagle7399 I am not pissed off, it's not Washington which decided of the strategy, it's French Marshal Rochambeau. I am happy that French-american alliance has beaten Cornwallis. Nothing is more enjoying than an english defeat !

@@eagle7399 This war was a global and a world war. When Benjamin Franklin succeeded to convince France to enter militarily with all ehr weight (in fact it's the result of the important battle of Saratoga which confirmed that US minutemen could do something if european powers were entering in war), french diplomacy involved Spain and Netherlands. The Spanish king was of the house of the Bourbons, the french King family, they were usual enemies to England. Netherlands was an economical opponent, they heard french argument sin favour of a global war. English had to share their fleet and ships all around the globe. The combined fleet of France, Netherlands and Spain was enough to give a good run to the Royal Navy. Also, after the loss of Canada, France had launched a great plan to modernise and improve greatly the french navy.
Sure, Yorktown was truly necessary to obtain the Paris treaty, but if Spain and Netherlands hadn't been involved, it would have been very hard to win. if both three (Fr, Dutch and Sp) hadn't entered in war, it would have been almost impossible to win for the "insurgents" ;)

I disagree. I feel that the music adds a pleasant background to the words being spoken. While the volume of the music is subjective I feel like it’s loud but not too loud to ruin the commentary of the doc.

Ah. Great video, mon ami! One of my favorite pastimes was embarrassing the British.
However, you missed the part where as the British surrendered they played World Turned Upside Down they only stared at the French soldiers til I told the American band to play Yankee Doodle at which point they swung their heads in unison to the American soldiers!

Clean this up, and this documentary would've rocked!... It was still good, but it could've been really good...
Take as many takes (as it takes) to get the narration perfect... No stutters, no voice volume fluctuations, and better cadence with less speed (in other words slow down and let the information breath in the minds of your viewers)... LOVE LOVE LOVE the constant maps, however, when needed throw in some full screen stats and analysis to parallel and support what is being said (because seeing and hearing information at the same time helps the absorption of said information).
This was my first viewing but I subscribed (because the history was excellent and accurate) so it won't be my last.

Another great video. I think every American should read the Treaty of Paris 1783 VERY closely. You’ll be surprised by what you discover. Also look into the Act of 1871.

Great video. Constructive criticism-Since you obviously spend a lot of time editing, you should be able to correct your verbal narration mistakes where you misspoke. Your narration should be just as good as your video production, otherwise those are a distraction.

It’s so weird but Martha Washington’s son John Parke Custis who was George Washington’s adopted son and who was marry Anna Custis lees grandfather died during the siege of Yorktown not from fighting but from camp fever which is epidemic typhus or dysentery and he was 26 and it’s weird because of how young he was but it’s also interesting to me because I know someone that is related to Martha Washington

You need to rehearse your monologue a little better. You had way too many mispronunciations and hesitations making it seem a little amateurish. Other than that it was pretty good, and I think you have some real potential as a content creator.... if you can clean up the monologue.

The French Generals were masters of strategy, Washington was a mere tyro and nowhere near a great General, but enjoys the kudos that the victors who write history bestow upon him. Similarly FDR gets praise due to being President during "great and dangerous times" yet clearly mostly a bungler in many of his projects and initiatives.

Dude the British were just as good as us when it came to light infantry tactics and skirmishing. Hell they were the ones who gave birth to Roger's Rangers.

So the American Revolution…not a big war by any means. Only 6800 soldiers of the American Military died in battle.. 130,000 died of smallpox… yikes
I know you are trying to create a sense of drama, but some of the language you use to create that effect betrays the truth of what really happened. Be more careful with your selection of words and be sure to read multiple sources to get several perspectives.
