Oh man, you have just hit on the million-dollar question, I could talk about this for a LONG time. Brace yourself :). I'll talk about why I left the game, then address the FOMO question. I'll preface by saying this game is still one of my all-time favs. My reasons for leaving the game are all personal, and based what I observed in my own heart as I owned and experienced this game. I don't assume everyone will or should respond the same way I did. I'd say the main reason I got out of the game is the INVESTMENT this game demands of players, both time and money. Money: A complete collection runs $2,000 - 3,000 ish. How much of your money would you like to invest in a single game, for the purpose of entertainment? I personally found when I had THAT much money tied up in one thing, my heart was tied to it, and my mind was constantly thinking about it, obsessing over it. Jesus says in Matthew 6:21 "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also". I felt that - I invested in and treasured this game, and so that's where my heart was, and my mind was dwelling on it almost constantly. Ironically, I sort of felt like Bilbo not wanting to get rid of his precious ring. I don't like feeling that kind of attachment to a material thing, especially a game. So after selling my complete collection, I thought I'd try being content with a smaller collection, and that's right when they came out with the Revised edition! That would solve the problem, right?? Almost, except I came to realize my other problem with the game was the investment of TIME... Time: This is a "lifestyle" game, a hobby within a hobby. When you invest in games like this, you'll spend more time learning about the game, listening to podcasts, watching videos, reading blogs, building decks, organizing your collection, etc. than you'll actually play the game. If that's what you're looking for, something to sink hundreds, even thousands of hours into, this is one of the best games for it. I just came to realize that this is not how I want to spend my limited free time in this season of life, it's too much for me. One of my favorite things about the game is the deckbuilding, but it's extremely time-consuming, and caused me to stay up late at night too many times. To answer your question about the FOMO - yes this game gives serious FOMO, but less than it used to. The original release model of 6 adventure packs + Deluxe box for a cycle caused SERIOUS FOMO trying to hunt and track down individual packs on online stores. The new release model of just two products per cycle is much friendlier to consumers, and less FOMO-inducing. Start with a revised core set, there's a lot of game in there. Then move to Dark Of Mirkwood / Fellowship Of The Ring Saga Expansion. If you love all of that content, you'll probably get hooked, and the FOMO will come. If you are a completionist, and you have already played the game and know you want to invest your time and money into it, then you should just buy a complete collection on eBay or on the FB group. If you don't want to invest $3,000 into a game, just getting a Revised collection for like $700 (ish) will give you the BEST content for the game, and still occupy many, many years of your time. It's my pleasure! So I think what you're describing are "side quests", which first featured in the Angmar Awakened cycle, then later un future cycles. Side quests are covered in that expansion's rulebook, but essentially they remain in the staging area, and before committing characters to the quest you get to choose what quest card becomes the "active quest". Hi there! I recommend a sort of hybrid - I usually put my hand and the staging area on the Uberstax, and all the cards I play on the table (heroes, allies, attachments). If you don't use many ally attachments then you can use the Uberstax for all of your in-play allies; you can fit wooden cubes (to mark exhausting) and dice for damage counters (or even the actual damage counters) on the Uberstax, so that still works too. Also, I only use one color for resources. Since resources go on your heroes, you always know what "color" the resources are. Hope that helps!

@ Are you playing solo? If so, be sure to play Escape From Dol Guldur either in campaign mode, or play it 2-handed; that quest was not designed for solo one-handed play, it's almost impossible that way, but campaign mode fixed that :).

That's great! Having played those others, I don't think you'll find this game very complicated, it's a joy to play but just plan plenty of time for your first games that will probably go quite long.

Oh oh, yes I see your question now. The answer is no, all standard attachments always go away back into your player deck between missions, even for a campaign (unless a campaign card effect tells you otherwise). Boons and Burdens are the cards that can act differently in a campaign setting. Also damage counters and threat level normally reset between quests in a campaign as well, unless you're playing an Expert campaign where damage is persistent. Hope that helps!

Thanks for watching! In Part 2 of my How To Play series I cover the rules for campaign mode, if you haven't seen that yet I would start there, then read the rulebook on that section to get clarity. There are specific rules around the cards you "earn" throughout the campaign and add to your "campaign pool", so definitely pay attention to those, especially the ones that have the "permanent" keyword. The first quest - definitely. The second quest - maybe. The third quest - not necessarily. I would say the best way to start this game is with the core set + Dark of Mirkwood to have a 5-quest mini campaign that's really great for learning the game. There are plenty of decks you can build out of the core set that will help you learn the game and that you'll have a good time with! As soon as you move on to another campaign or want more deck/player card variety, go for the starter decks. They're fantastic.

That's the million-dollar question :). Personally, I don't see a need to rush after the revised/repackaged content that's been released over the past few years (everything released after the revised core set). The whole reason they revised/repackaged this game is to set it up to remain an "evergreen" game that can be reprinted for a while, because historically it has sold well. My advice is don't buy all the expansions until you are sure that you want to invest in a game like this - a "lifestyle" game that you can sink hundreds of hours into, basically a hobby within the hobby. Until you know you love it, just start with the revised core set and the Dark of Mirkwood pack, and play through that whole 5-quest mini campaign and experiment with different deck builds out of the core set. If you are loving the process of building different decks to overcome different challenges, and you like the difficulty of the game, then dive in to a degree that your free time and budget allow :). @ I spent many an evening solo-ing this game when my first was born :). You and I are certainly near the target demographic for this game, and it's excellent for what it is, as long as this kind of deep entertainment (a "lifestyle hobby" really) is what you're looking for!

I'm a perfectionist, and the scripting/editing I do for these types of videos can take hundreds of hours. I hope to be able to return when kids and career enter a new season, but we'll see!

I forgot to add. I restrict my own decks to cards that were available when a specific scenario was released and hence these starter decks don't work for me personally.

You'll have to remind me where I use those tokens - I thought in this video I only used tokens that came in the base box, but might have forgotten...

Glad you liked it! "Travel cost" is a broad term for the things printed on a location that explain what you need to do in order to travel there. The Travel cost could be anything, like exhausting a hero, or paying a resource, or revealing an additional encounter card...whatever the location tells you is the cost. Hope that helps!

I believe I got that ruling from BGG; thought it was an official ruling, but it's been a long time so I could be wrong.
