FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: 1.) Will this defrost the ENTIRE refrigerator? - No. It only defrosts the freezer section. The fresh food section is not affected. 2.) How long does it take before it starts to defrost? - The defrost cycle happens every 6 hours. You should notice if it's working at least 6 hours later. Sometimes the cycle can start earlier depending on when you forced the long defrost during the last cycle. 3.) How long is the long defrost cycle? It is exactly 21 minutes. The short defrost is 10 minutes. Sometimes 10 minutes is simply not long enough to thoroughly thaw out the lines. 4.) If the power cuts out, do I have to redo the procedure of setting it back to long defrost? - Yes. The fridge does not have stored memory. If the power cuts out, the defrost settings revert back to "AUTO." You must reapply the long defrost settings. 5.) This trick didn't help, what else could it be? - A severed wiring harness at the bottom door hinge is usually the culprit. But in rare cases, sometimes the defrost element can go bad. The water line pump can also go bad. Or the ice maker harvester motor can also go bad.

This worked for me, thanks for the video. When my fridge/freezer was installed the builder lost my manual, there's probably one on the internet somewhere but pushing buttons to get into maintenance mode is not something that immediately springs to mind so even with a manual I would be unlikely to find the fix. Great video. Test mode 38 is forced defrost. It doesn't set your fridge to defrost short or long automatically. It is only a manual defrost that you can choose whether you want a short defrost or long defrost and will start as soon as you exit diagnostic service mode
With many whirlpool refrigerators, there is a sheet of paper with all the diagnostic codes hidden under the hinge cover of the right-side door (top hinge). With my fridge, there is one Phillips head screw to remove. Hope that helps.
My Whirlpool side by side is an older model, ten years old. When I hold the two buttons on the left of the display I then receive a '01', but when I press the options button it starts with number '28' and doesn't go higher. You went down to '38' to get to the right zone. Any thoughts?
Question about another ice maker issue. Before it quit making ice, which is what brought me to this video, the cube selector quit working. The little door opens when the pad is pressed, but the auger will not turn and dispense the ice. I checked to make sure the auger turns, and it does, but it simply won't dispense. Any ideas? By the way, great video. Trying your instructions now to get the ice working again!
My ice maker never stopped working but, I could tell water was being sprayed on the inside of the door. When I took off the front panel, I noticed that ice was built up in the black tube where the water flows into the ice tray. I took a blow dryer and melted the ice and a started to work again. 24 hours later the same thing happened. Hopefully this defrost option will work! If it does thank you so much!

This is a great video, Do you happen to know the codes for Model WSF26C3EXF01 (this only goes up to 30). Do you know what number this model uses too? (Whirpool manual does not have this info).
Your fix didn’t work but your other advice re other problems did uncover the problem. The wire bundle at the bottom of the door was split open and at least 2 of the wires were severed. Anything we can do about that short of calling a repair person? Thanks so much. You’ve been very helpful so far.
@@MShr-i2g That's unfortunate, I wish it could've been the easier fix! Sadly, the repair will be tedious. Each individual wire will need to be spliced together, kinda like installing a car stereo if you've ever done that before. I think another issue with the wire bundle are that the wires are too short and can't handle the door at full swing. So when you splice them back together, I'd use extra wiring to give it slack when it does open full lock. The professional way of doing it would be using a soldering iron and heat shrink tubing. I only have one video of such an install, but it's automotive in nature

When you put the mode into Long defrost mode, will it defrost the whloe freezer or just the water line to the ice maker? Will I need to empty out the freezer first?
I don’t know about other people but when I initiated the Long DF it basically defrosted my entire freezer so I would remove all food. No this wasn't the problem, it was a broken wire at the bottom of the freezer door like many others on youtube. As the freezer door opens and closes it breaks the wires at that point. My refrigerator is 8 years old. Only had one wire broke.

@@OctaneSlain Thank you for the prompt reply - I'll let you know how it shakes out in the morning...it's been an eventful Holiday season - sewage line laid down just before Thanksgiving - making that day memorable for ALL the wrong reasons. Then two days later after finally getting the entire line replaced 9this past Thursday...a tub faucet quit turning at full throttle...into a slow draining tub...so while my wife was bailing the tub into the sink to keep it from flooding (due to the slow drain) I'm frantically trying to find the cut-off valve in our 94 year-old house tore apart a modern wall to find WHERE the cut off had been concealed in a back room renovation in the cellar. Fun times.
The ice slowed waaaay down the very first summer we owned this and we purchased the warranty, so a professional came out and replaced the entire door. But the new door's hose wasn't the same size as the old door, so we didn't have water/ice for over 7 months while we waited for parts to come in. This 2nd summer the ice has slowed and fingers crossed this EASY trick works for us. I'll keep you posted!
No, just leave it on long defrost. Your freezer will continue to act as normal. All this method does is extend the defrost duration of the ice water line.
Could this impact pressure to the water dispenser? Mine is making ice, but water pressure is low and the filter isn’t the issue because when bypassed it’s still low.
Has the fridge made a hissing sound at all? If not, it could be the water feed tube solenoid going bad. You can try to disconnect it and see if water comes out during the icemaker cycle. And while the line is out, try blowing into it. If you can't pass air through it easily, it's got an ice blockage. If the air blows easily, more than likely the solenoid has went bad and needs replaced.
Thank you! So, it's making ice but not dropping it. Water then drops and freezes in the ice holder and also drips out onto the floor. Is there some other quick fix I can do or check to see if the mechanism that flips the ice tray isn't working? Thank you.
These don't have a reset button on them, or none that I was able to find or search online. The tray stuck could be an issue with it being frozen. Can you rotate the tray by hand?
There is no water going to my ice maker but water is coming out through the water dispenser. It is completely impossible for me to move the refrigerator out. It barely got through the door when it was delivered to start with and it's way too big for me to handle. Pushing the little buttons in the front does not work on mine. Should I just flick off the circuit breaker for an hour or so? This, of course, assumes that you still feel that it would be a frozen line even if I'm getting water out the front door. I know it's a Sunday and I have don't expect you to respond but I'm kind of hoping that I'll get lucky. I ordered an emergency filter from Amazon and reset the thing that flashes that says that I need a new filter. I have an inline filter under the sink so I didn't feel any pressing need to change the one in the refrigerator/freezer. If Whirlpool is spiteful maybe they have something built in that automatically shuts things down. I'm uncertain. It's been a whole hour and a half since I ordered the water filter from Amazon. Yes, flipping the circuit breaker would let the line thaw out. It will probably take a good while for it to defrost. What exactly are the buttons doing? Not registering your input at all?
@OctaneSlain The buttons don't do anything at all except give water or lights or ice. It is impossible to push in two buttons and effect a service panel. It's really weird because every video that I watched on UA-cam does it and the owner's manual even says to do it. I must have that odd refrigerator. I won't complain because I seem to be the only one that never has problems with mine. I didn't change the filter because I have an under the sink Rainsoft P-12 and it should be quite sufficient. The filter, when I did take it out of the refrigerator, did weigh a good 3 oz more than the brand new one so there was some accumulation in there. I cannot imagine what is taking the ice so long. I put the filter in on Saturday afternoon and the bucket still isn't even halfway full. Water is coming out perfectly fine and the ice will normally fill up within a day. It really doesn't make a lot of sense to me. It's not exactly logical. I put my thermometer in the freezer in the ice bin and it is -1°. I don't think it could possibly be too cold to make ice. I have the setting in at medium and the little lights say "ideal". At some point when I have somebody around that can actually move that gigantic food chillin' machine, maybe I'll just go back there and change the tubing out. I don't think it could be clogged but ya' never know. OH! Also, I tried flicking the circuit breaker off for 10 minutes to see if I would be able to push the buttons in and it still wouldn't work. I tried it with the ice maker off and the ice maker on. The ice maker needed the "eraser tip reset". It's working. It's just taking a ludicrous amount of time. It is now Tuesday for Pete's sake! I could have driven to Alaska and retrieved a few bags of ice from the eskimos and driven back home to Chicago by now. Of course it would have to be time warp travel because it's only like 90° out so the ice might not have lived. 🧊
@@OctaneSlain Just wanted to let you know that the ice bin is almost full now. It is Friday morning at about 1:20 a.m. and I just heard another batch of ice fall. I want them to check it and it's just about full. It only took 6 days. I purchased a generic filter but the flow rate on the back says it's identical to the Whirlpool model. I used to work in the water treatment industry and I know that generic filters are just as good as the brand names USUALLY. They must submit much more stringent reporting than the big brands as they are continually scrutinized. I suspect that it might be a good idea for me to grab a guy friend to move the refrigerator out for me so that I can change the PVC line going in. The Rainsoft P-12 solid carbon block filter that I have under the sink does NOT remove mineral content as a coconut carbon fiber would. Its mission in life is to remove things like lead, chlorine, bacterium, etcetera. NOT mineral content. Therefore💡...this COULD actually be my fault after all. I very stupidly didn't stop to think that the configuration on this refrigerator could be so different then my previous refrigerators with ice makers but, now that I've had the opportunity to think about it, the PVC takes a very peculiar turn to feed the freezer compartment unlike traditional feeds that are pretty much a straight shoot from water source to ice maker and therefore purge mineral content right into the ice so it does not back up. This refrigerator's water feed takes turns before it ever reaches the ice maker. Mineral content is essentially pulverized rock. It is heavy. That filter that's in the bottom of the freezer compartment pulls much mineral / rock material out of the water. It, therefore, stands to reason that when that thing got full of rock material rock material backed up through the PVC feed and likely solidified thus impairing the flow of water. The only logical fix is for me to replace the PVC line. I asked your professional opinion. Do I pretty much have an accurate assessment of what is happening in your opinion? Thanks
Leave it on long defrost, don't change it back. Sometimes if your power goes out for a long period of time, it'll reset back to auto. You will have to repeat this process and set it back to "long" defrost. Auto mode doesn't do a good job of cycling between defrost modes and let's your water line freeze up
This is the best explanation and easiest fix. But where did you get your test code? I have a different model and my test code only goes to 27. So I don't have 38. How do you get the code? The internet doesn't seem to help.
I saw another video, where it shows you where sometimes they leave the code list and troubleshoot guide, if you go up on a step stool. On the top of the right side door the will be a cover for the door hinge, undo the screw and pup the cover off and there should be the code list .
Does this problem have anything to do with the refrigerator side freezing? I have both problems and hope your remedy will solve both. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem?
What if one's buttons will not push in? I have held the buttons, even carefully trying to balance them equally and absolutely nothing happens. It is completely impossible for me to move that gigantic food chillin' machine. I had to pull woodwork down when it arrived for them to even get it into the kitchen and then more woodwork down for them to slide it into the opening. Since I cannot unplug it, because I cannot move it, might I reset it by turning off the circuit breaker? I have the emergency water filter on order from Amazon. It should be here any minute now. Hopefully that will fix the world which is now crumbling in because my tiny little 5 lb dog, who is in the picture, absolutely positively HAS to have crushed ice in her water!

When I hold the ice type and light on my whirlpool fridge it just resets the filter timer. Any idea what I need to do to get to that menu?

My Kitchen Aid only gave me the Short Defrost option. I chose it, waited 24 hours and still no ice production. Any suggestions?

@@OctaneSlain Thank you for the prompt reply - I'll let you know how it shakes out in the morning...it's been an eventful Holiday season - sewage line laid down just before Thanksgiving - making that day memorable for ALL the wrong reasons.
Then two days later after finally getting the entire line replaced 9this past Thursday...a tub faucet quit turning at full throttle...into a slow draining tub...so while my wife was bailing the tub into the sink to keep it from flooding (due to the slow drain) I'm frantically trying to find the cut-off valve in our 94 year-old house tore apart a modern wall to find WHERE the cut off had been concealed in a back room renovation in the cellar.
Fun times.

The ice slowed waaaay down the very first summer we owned this and we purchased the warranty, so a professional came out and replaced the entire door. But the new door's hose wasn't the same size as the old door, so we didn't have water/ice for over 7 months while we waited for parts to come in. This 2nd summer the ice has slowed and fingers crossed this EASY trick works for us. I'll keep you posted!

No, just leave it on long defrost. Your freezer will continue to act as normal. All this method does is extend the defrost duration of the ice water line.
Could this impact pressure to the water dispenser? Mine is making ice, but water pressure is low and the filter isn’t the issue because when bypassed it’s still low.

We just did this yesterday but no ice has been started back up. Anything else we should do before we call a tech?
Has the fridge made a hissing sound at all? If not, it could be the water feed tube solenoid going bad. You can try to disconnect it and see if water comes out during the icemaker cycle. And while the line is out, try blowing into it. If you can't pass air through it easily, it's got an ice blockage. If the air blows easily, more than likely the solenoid has went bad and needs replaced.
How long does the “long” defrost take?
Thank you! So, it's making ice but not dropping it. Water then drops and freezes in the ice holder and also drips out onto the floor. Is there some other quick fix I can do or check to see if the mechanism that flips the ice tray isn't working? Thank you.

My 38 options were SH AND OF OR DF , I picked the non SH. OPTION , any thoughts , just did it , can update on 2-3 hr
I'm not sure if that'll work. The "H" options are for the ice "harvest" settings.

These don't have a reset button on them, or none that I was able to find or search online. The tray stuck could be an issue with it being frozen. Can you rotate the tray by hand?
There is no water going to my ice maker but water is coming out through the water dispenser. It is completely impossible for me to move the refrigerator out. It barely got through the door when it was delivered to start with and it's way too big for me to handle.
Pushing the little buttons in the front does not work on mine.
Should I just flick off the circuit breaker for an hour or so? This, of course, assumes that you still feel that it would be a frozen line even if I'm getting water out the front door.

I ordered an emergency filter from Amazon and reset the thing that flashes that says that I need a new filter. I have an inline filter under the sink so I didn't feel any pressing need to change the one in the refrigerator/freezer. If Whirlpool is spiteful maybe they have something built in that automatically shuts things down.
I'm uncertain.

PS: I really do appreciate your video and I'm going to follow you. You make everything look so nice and easy and those are very helpful tricks. Now, if only my buttons would work. They do not. I could stand there holding the buttons in until the cows come home and I do believe that the cows have run away and have no plans of returning.
Yes, flipping the circuit breaker would let the line thaw out. It will probably take a good while for it to defrost.
What exactly are the buttons doing? Not registering your input at all?

The buttons don't do anything at all except give water or lights or ice. It is impossible to push in two buttons and effect a service panel. It's really weird because every video that I watched on UA-cam does it and the owner's manual even says to do it. I must have that odd refrigerator. I won't complain because I seem to be the only one that never has problems with mine.
I didn't change the filter because I have an under the sink Rainsoft P-12 and it should be quite sufficient. The filter, when I did take it out of the refrigerator, did weigh a good 3 oz more than the brand new one so there was some accumulation in there.
I cannot imagine what is taking the ice so long. I put the filter in on Saturday afternoon and the bucket still isn't even halfway full. Water is coming out perfectly fine and the ice will normally fill up within a day. It really doesn't make a lot of sense to me. It's not exactly logical. I put my thermometer in the freezer in the ice bin and it is -1°. I don't think it could possibly be too cold to make ice. I have the setting in at medium and the little lights say "ideal".
At some point when I have somebody around that can actually move that gigantic food chillin' machine, maybe I'll just go back there and change the tubing out. I don't think it could be clogged but ya' never know.
OH! Also, I tried flicking the circuit breaker off for 10 minutes to see if I would be able to push the buttons in and it still wouldn't work. I tried it with the ice maker off and the ice maker on. The ice maker needed the "eraser tip reset". It's working. It's just taking a ludicrous amount of time. It is now Tuesday for Pete's sake! I could have driven to Alaska and retrieved a few bags of ice from the eskimos and driven back home to Chicago by now. Of course it would have to be time warp travel because it's only like 90° out so the ice might not have lived. 🧊

Just wanted to let you know that the ice bin is almost full now. It is Friday morning at about 1:20 a.m. and I just heard another batch of ice fall. I want them to check it and it's just about full.

I purchased a generic filter but the flow rate on the back says it's identical to the Whirlpool model. I used to work in the water treatment industry and I know that generic filters are just as good as the brand names USUALLY. They must submit much more stringent reporting than the big brands as they are continually scrutinized. I suspect that it might be a good idea for me to grab a guy friend to move the refrigerator out for me so that I can change the PVC line going in. The Rainsoft P-12 solid carbon block filter that I have under the sink does NOT remove mineral content as a coconut carbon fiber would. Its mission in life is to remove things like lead, chlorine, bacterium, etcetera. NOT mineral content.
Therefore💡...this COULD actually be my fault after all. I very stupidly didn't stop to think that the configuration on this refrigerator could be so different then my previous refrigerators with ice makers but, now that I've had the opportunity to think about it, the PVC takes a very peculiar turn to feed the freezer compartment unlike traditional feeds that are pretty much a straight shoot from water source to ice maker and therefore purge mineral content right into the ice so it does not back up.
This refrigerator's water feed takes turns before it ever reaches the ice maker. Mineral content is essentially pulverized rock. It is heavy. That filter that's in the bottom of the freezer compartment pulls much mineral / rock material out of the water. It, therefore, stands to reason that when that thing got full of rock material rock material backed up through the PVC feed and likely solidified thus impairing the flow of water. The only logical fix is for me to replace the PVC line.
I asked your professional opinion. Do I pretty much have an accurate assessment of what is happening in your opinion?

Leave it on long defrost, don't change it back. Sometimes if your power goes out for a long period of time, it'll reset back to auto. You will have to repeat this process and set it back to "long" defrost. Auto mode doesn't do a good job of cycling between defrost modes and let's your water line freeze up
The white ice tray came off and fell inside the ice case. How do you put that back on ? Please share a video on this 😊

This is the best explanation and easiest fix. But where did you get your test code? I have a different model and my test code only goes to 27. So I don't have 38.
How do you get the code? The internet doesn't seem to help.
I saw another video, where it shows you where sometimes they leave the code list and troubleshoot guide, if you go up on a step stool. On the top of the right side door the will be a cover for the door hinge, undo the screw and pup the cover off and there should be the code list .
Does this problem have anything to do with the refrigerator side freezing? I have both problems and hope your remedy will solve both. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem?
Blocking the top airflow vents will cause freezing with the refrigerator side.
The ice type button and light button when held together just resets the filter.

What if one's buttons will not push in? I have held the buttons, even carefully trying to balance them equally and absolutely nothing happens.
It is completely impossible for me to move that gigantic food chillin' machine. I had to pull woodwork down when it arrived for them to even get it into the kitchen and then more woodwork down for them to slide it into the opening.
Since I cannot unplug it, because I cannot move it, might I reset it by turning off the circuit breaker?
