Manufacturers should pay for their silly designs that cause issues on customers' appliance.
I live in central PA and my ice maker quit working, it was under warranty but since I bought it at Lowes no service tech around here would look at it. After 6 months of Whirlpool trying to find someone they sent me an email saying to find someone myself and send the bill to them. That was last December. My previous fridge was a really nice $3000 LG Kenmore unit, where they had bad compressors. I paid the Sears service tech to look at it and he verified the compressor was one of LGs junk units. The compressor was under warranty so I asked him If I should fix it and he said If it was his fridge he would not because the compressor part that goes bad disintegrates and gets all through the closed system and I could have problems later. So I junked it and bought the Whirlpool unit and I don't have ice. I'm so pissed I haven't wanted to troubleshoot using Bens's video yet, I just bring ice from the fridge downstairs and dump it into the Whirlpool upstairs. I guess I will try soon to see what's wrong with the ice maker. They have been making ice makers in fridges for over 50 years, why can't they make a model that works?🤬🤬🤬🤬
Ben, thank you very much for presenting this video! It is the only video that I can find that shows the exact same controller panel that my (WRS555SIHZ06) Whirlpool uses. I went searching for a video that describes troubleshooting and repair of the dreaded cold freezer/warm refrigerator issue - and all the other videos show completely different components/technology in the thermister, defrost heater, and... there is evidently not a replaceable defrost timer device, but rather is handled by the ($300+ !) controller board. I'll run the diagnostic test you describe in this video, and try to force the defrost heater on, but if it doesn't work, do you outline further troubleshooting and repair for this style of components, in another video? Thanks again! Really appreciate that you took the time to present this info!

Bens Appliance - Thanks! I get no action at all on the force defrosts. Freezer is freezing up. Freezer thermistor is good, defrost element has continuity so not outright broke. Suggestions?
@@ankd18on step 5 if you see LED 789 on when you run it that means your thermistor is good. I have the same exact issue james. Thermistor passes but when i run the test on the heating element it doesn’t warm even after letting the test run for 5-10 min. Not sure if you ever resolved this. Im on the borderline of just buying a new fridge.
My defroster heating element was disconnected at the top of the condenser unit. I had to defrost the freezer just to see the problem since it was buried in ice. Now the frig cools properly. the ice make must freeze-up in the door so I've had to do the force defrost twice to get it working again.
Here is a cool thing if you bought this new. Take off the bottom grill. Inside they have taped in a folded up spec sheet for the service tech showing all these test codes for the service tech. Great to have if you are a DIY'er like all of us.
Wonderful video thanks for the info. I just bought this refrigerator. How long does it take to start making ice? Do I have to do anything to start? It’s been almost 7hrs … it still doesn’t fill the water in ice maker… thanks in advance
Great video, do you have to go through all of the diagnostic steps prior to the ice maker diagnostic? Or can you run that one independently? Thank you!
On my model "WRS321SDHZ08", the button "Refrigerator Temp" cannot toggle the defrost test ON/OFF. Tried with other tests like defrost sensor test, doesn't work as well.
Well your video had been helpful in finishing the broken wire. We fixed the wire and then showed error code 22. Unplugged and replugged in after a minute and it is still showing 22. Any suggestions?
Thank you for the video, I was able to follow your steps, but my fridge is still messed up lol. Think its’ the compressor keeps coming on and off and not freezing anything hopefully i can get a warranty replacement.
Hi Ben, I wrote you last year with a ice maker question on a brand new side by side WRS321SDHV08 ,now Bad news.... 3 weeks ago the defrost thermostat and heater failed. I've been living out of a cooler because the 3rd party co. that Lowes uses didnt stock the parts. Today the tech repaired it. I'm VERY upset that this $1600 unit broke down after just 53 weeks. So now I cant help notice that it runs constantly (repaired 12 hrs ago) but only shuts down about every 1/2 hr for 2 mins and starts up again. I have controls at 2 bars. Freezer is now at 8 and fridge is 38. Nobody can tell me what approx temps the bars represent. Can you advise on the bar temps and the current shut down cycle? Thanks Tom
Hi Ben. Thank you for your awesome videos! 👍🏼 I am not sure if ever made video where you actually test ice maker. Ran into situation where ice maker does not want to go to test cycle in diagnostic. Should I press any buttons or it’s supposed to go on test cycle right away when test 29 is selected? Thank you.
Hi, first thanks for this video. I performed the diagnostic procedure for the Defrost, and I checked the following: - The Defrost Heater is measuring 24.7 Ohms - Voltage in AC is not changing from 6VAC - I don't see any defrost thermostat there. - Model is WRS325SDHZ05 What should I check next?
Thank you for taking the time to make this video! We have just powered on the fridge, but can't pull down the plastic icemaker arm. It seems to be in it's up position. Typical ice makers have the wire loop, and I am not familiar with this plastic arm (on this model). Is it possibly a micro switch and the arm only moves a centimeter or two to activate shutoff when full of ice?
Hi the video was really informative However I can’t understand how to get the fridge out of Demo mode. 😢 do you have another video that shows that exactly?
I’ve had absolutely no problems with this refrigerator. I’ve had it now for two years and it works beautifully. My friend bought one right after I purchased mine and his works beautifully as well so I don’t know what the issues are?
Defroster not working and freezes over. Freezer is below freezing but fridge is 60°F. Second time this has happened. Last time we lost a bunch of food and had to throw everything out. Unplug the fridge and let it drain, plugged back in and worked. Having little digital thermometers in the fridge and freeze has helped get ahead of the problem. Not a fan of the fridge
@@mikeflanary642 I have the same issue and I do the same thing. Once the thermometer stays above 40 degrees on the refrigerator side, I empty it into my old fridge and unplug it. Repeat every couple of weeks. It's a horrible fridge.
The ice maker wasn't working. After fiddling around with it, I finally broke and used the code on the side of the container. It brought me straight here. No searching involved.
I have a whirlpool refrigerator freezer side by side WS311SDHM02 both side are hot I have power supply cuz my light bulbs come on my ice maker works my water works. Where is the defrost timer at I can't locate it? If you can answer ASAP please I thank you so much. May God bless you and your.
Hello could you tell me how to reset diagnose my Whirlpool side by side refrigerator WR311SDHM02 it has an ice maker the ice maker seems to want to work my lights are on . Please respond ASAP. Thank you so much
just watched this video soo helpful. but i have an icemaker that stopped working I did the quick reset but nothing . this happened before and the repairman came - was testing connections - and then the plastic arm started moving again Any ideas?? Thanks
Our 6.5 month old Frigidaire stopped working. The first one we got home and the doors were bent so it wouldn’t cool. This is the second one (replaced the same day). And now here I am trying to figure out why fans and compressor isn’t running. Good thing I have a dual BBQ temp probe to also help. Should have purchased extra warranty 🙄
Hi Ben I have the exact refrigerator that you're demonstrating the diagnostic mode. my problem is it won't go into defrost mode automatically. In the diagnostics mode I was able to force it to go and it worked just fine can you tell me what you think is wrong that causeing my unit to freeze up
Sorry I gave you the wrong model number for my whirlpool refrigerator.the right number is WRS311SDHM02 how do I reset and reprogram my refrigerator is not cooling at all. Everything comes on but doesn't cool ASAP I thank you God bless you
This ice maker is horrible. You can turn off ice machine for like 5 mins, turn back on, that should reset itself. Otherwise, turn ice maker off, take a pencil and press the reset button (hold for 5 seconds) and release. The handle should lower and tray resets and draws water. Good luck. This is almost a monthly ritual for me!
I have this in a rental, the reset does exactly what it’s supposed to do except fill the tray with water. It’s trying to but doesn’t. Frozen water lines possibly blocking it???
I wish to help when you people created these videos. You would do it on specific models cause my model doesn't have anything that you're talking about.
Thank you for this video. Could you share the sheet of codes that you are using in the video? Also, how to determine from this test whether there is issue with compressor or anything else such as Thermistor, Harness etc?
My freezer was not defrosting. After removing the back cover and removing all the ice I found the heater connection at the top was not even plugged it (it was buried in an Ice cube). I've had to run the force defrost twice to get the ice maker working. I suspect the water line in the door is freezing up. The water dispenser is working fine while the ice maker just quits. I run the forced defroster mode and it runs about 30 minutes then shuts off. The diagnostic screen resets at this point too.
Hi Ben, I had a WRS321SDHB delivered in Dec. I've been watching the temps of both sides. I'm concerned with the freezer side. I noticed how rock hard the Ice Cream was. At 1 bar (lowest setting) the reading is approx -4 . I cant imagine what 5 bars would do. I haven't tried it. Would you call for service and have it looked at? Thanks
Incredibly helpful video, literally the only place I've found with the information I needed. Thank you! 2:50 For the FC Sensor and RC Sensor checks, is there anywhere that outputs the numerical temperature of the refrigerator and freezer?
Hey Ben my parents recently bought a Whirlpool 20.6 cu. ft. White Side-by-Side Model Number: WRS571CIHW and there having issues with things freezing in the back of the fridge. They've adjusted the temp of the fridge and that seems to help. Just wondering why a new fridge would be doing this. Got any tips or ideas? Thank you. Great vid!
Mine did that as well I went one notch below the middle setting, and everything seems fine try not to block the vent on the top shelf at the very back left-hand side. I have had no issues since.
If the water and ice dispenser are inop I have figured it out....The water filter door ends up flexing over time, and has insufficient tension. Basically causing the fridge to think the filter is removed. If you take the bottom grille off the fridge, to allow access to the filter housing, you can then pinch the door tighter to the filter housing (pushing the filter in more) and the water will dispense.
**CORRECTION** Water/Ice INOP After further diagnosis with circuit/system verification. The initial lack of tension from the filter door that I stated previously was not the cause of my fridge water/ice dispenser being inoperative. What I found was the water filter housing, is the root cause of failure. The water filter housing is a two piece component, which after repeated filter replacements cause them both to become loose. So I removed the water filter housing, separated the cylinder portion (dark grey) and the valve portion (white) (I ended up breaking a piece of the cylinder trying to separated the two). Scuffed/etched the two pieces and applied JB Weld to both pieces and reinstalled together. Let it cure for 72hrs, and reinstalled the filter housing to the fridge. Both Water and Ice Dispenser work good as new, which beats paying $160 for a new filter housing.
I got my fridge to get to the defrost mode but how do I know if it is actually doing anything? Do I have to hit the last button to turn it on or is it on by default. And if I do need to push the last button how will I know it is on? Thanks
Hi. I got to step 29 and wasn't sure what to do so I waited a while and then proceeded. Like you said, fridge started leaking water so I had to shut down water supply. I'm not sure what I was supposed to do when I got to that step. I waited 5 minutes or so before proceeding, but that obviously failed. Any suggestions? Thanks
Does anyone know why my Fridge WRS321 SDHZ cannot keep my salads, bread, anything perishable from becoming wet, soggy or moldy. It happens within 2 days. Even started buying sealed bags of salad stuff and it still gathers moisture within the bag. I leave air conditioning on in the house far longer just to see if it works better. Temps are between 35F-42F mostly. Never freezes. I have fridge thermometer. (calibrated). My 2005 GE never had this issue at all. What can it be?
I have this fridge and am having issues with it not defrosting. I tested the heater and it shows 32 ohms which is good. I go into diagnostic mode and go to the turn on defrost and the heater doesn't appear to be turning on. Should it get hot(like cherry red)? Do you think the circuit board is defective? Thx for any help!!
Had mine 4 years just suddenly stoped freezing last week had to tose a ton of food not sure what to do cleaned the coils both fans seem to turn on. I always had ice maker problems every 2 months had to put hair dryer on ice maker to unfreeze components
I bought one of these refrigerators, and it froze up solid in about 6-9 days. Whirlpool sent out a tech, and he replaced the defrost sensor. It froze up again in about the same amount of time. He then replace the control board, and I am already seeing a lot of ice building up in the return like its going to freeze up again. Do you have any other ideas?
I have a side-by-side Kenmore with the ice maker and water. So the temperature setting is lines not numbers so do the freezer need to be on just one line I just moved in an apartment and I think it's up to high because it's frost forming inside the freezer , and it wasn't like that when I came in so I might have pushed it up too high but the lines was on number four? And what lines should the refrigerator be on 2-3
Thanks for the video. Does the defrost heater mode takes a lot of time to work? I did it and can touch the heater and is still cold. I have this refrigerator and had a technician twice and it's still gets frozen.
I just bought this fridge and it has lots of water. But makes ice so slow! It’s been a week and the bin is only half full. Is there a way to make ice fast?
I have the same panel, but my ice is not dispensing. Ice maker is working, but auger motor is not turning on when paddle is pushed. Is there a step that will help me diagnosis the problem?
Thank you so much, couldn't find this info anywhere. Btw, do you know if there's a way to reset this ice maker? I have the similar (wrs555sihz00 ) and in door ice maker is so sporatic. It will work fine then have days where it's just slow, or the tray is full and won't dump. Happened yesterday, tray had been full for a day but wouldn't dump it, then after I removed the bin (and disconnected wire connector) to clean and check for frost build up, which it didn't seem to have, it suddenly started working again upon reassembly. Think it needs occasional resets? Just don't know how to reset it haha.

There's no defrost timer. It's on the circuit board. Which should be on the back of the refrigerator. I do not have the tech sheet for that. You'll need to purchase it from a website to get the technical documentation for the codes like i did for this machine.
@@bensappliancesandjunk I thought it was on the back of refrigerator but I don't see a panel to take off. Do I have to take the whole panel off the back. If try to see is the timer is stuck Open because everything comes on but it is not cooling at all. Thank you again
@@patl2699 I tried looking at the schematic for that fridge for you: 1) There is no timer. It doesn't exist on that model. There is no mechanical system that controls the unit whatsoever. Its entirely electronic. 2) As far as I can tell, the only control system is embedded in the UI on the touch screen, that's it from the schematics. 3) If there is zero cooling, check if the compressor is running or humming. If its not moving at all, the relay may be bad, and needs replaced. 4) if not, please for the love of Jesus, hire a technician. I am afraid you're going to destroy your unit by making more assumptions that parts are where they aren't. I can't help you much more with this system, so please seek the advice of a local technician that can physically look at the system to determine whats going on.
Hi Ben, I have the same unit. question: The ice maker doesn't have an on/off control arm. How does it detect ice level and then automatically shut off?
Is it possible that I have turned off the ice maker water fill by pressing codes ? Two repair companies cannot get my ice maker to fill with water even after installing a new unit.
why is this model's evaporator coil probe to freezing up? they all run on R600 and i haven't done my studying on the stuff as yet, so i don't mess around with it. i've had guys ask me if i think its low on refrigerant, i really believe so but they need to do their proper troubleshooting.
Left our very old Inglis appliances at our other house. 26yrs old and no issues. Moved to another house and the Whirlpool fridge is not even two years old and we find our selves transferring frozen goods to our freezer and fridge items to the beer fridge because it's barely cold. @james How did you determine from this test that freezer themistor is good? I am unable to connect the test with Thermistor health.
Just did this for the first time... Great tip thank you!
You are my new hero!! It even had instructions on fixing the ice maker!!!
Wonderful video thanks for the info. I just bought this refrigerator. How long does it take to start making ice? Do I have to do anything to start? It’s been almost 7hrs … it still doesn’t fill the water in ice maker… thanks in advance
Got mine two days ago. Dump the first batch of ice is what I was told by the techs to filter out anything in the water then you should be good to go.
Great Video! It's super easy to follow, straight to the point. Amazing job!
Great video, do you have to go through all of the diagnostic steps prior to the ice maker diagnostic? Or can you run that one independently? Thank you!
On my model "WRS321SDHZ08", the button "Refrigerator Temp" cannot toggle the defrost test ON/OFF. Tried with other tests like defrost sensor test, doesn't work as well.
i have the same problem, cant figure out why its not defrosting
mine will not defrost, says the defrost sensor passed but the only way I can defrost my fridge is to take everything out and wait.
I am not sure if ever made video where you actually test ice maker.
Ran into situation where ice maker does not want to go to test cycle in diagnostic.
Should I press any buttons or it’s supposed to go on test cycle right away when test 29 is selected?
Thank you.
Hi, first thanks for this video. I performed the diagnostic procedure for the Defrost, and I checked the following:
- The Defrost Heater is measuring 24.7 Ohms
- Voltage in AC is not changing from 6VAC
- I don't see any defrost thermostat there.
- Model is WRS325SDHZ05
What should I check next?
Thank you for taking the time to make this video! We have just powered on the fridge, but can't pull down the plastic icemaker arm. It seems to be in it's up position. Typical ice makers have the wire loop, and I am not familiar with this plastic arm (on this model). Is it possibly a micro switch and the arm only moves a centimeter or two to activate shutoff when full of ice?
I believe so yes
@@bensappliancesandjunk Thanks so much!
Are you having trouble with it not making ice?
Yes
How long should I run the defrost mode?
Do you know what to do if the entire control panel (ice and water dispenser panel) is no longer lit up or acknowledges any buttons being pressed?
Stop cooling on us.. thank u for the video😊
Hi the video was really informative
However I can’t understand how to get the fridge out of Demo mode. 😢 do you have another video that shows that exactly?
I’ve had absolutely no problems with this refrigerator. I’ve had it now for two years and it works beautifully. My friend bought one right after I purchased mine and his works beautifully as well so I don’t know what the issues are?
Read the comments and you can get some ideas
Defroster not working and freezes over. Freezer is below freezing but fridge is 60°F. Second time this has happened. Last time we lost a bunch of food and had to throw everything out. Unplug the fridge and let it drain, plugged back in and worked. Having little digital thermometers in the fridge and freeze has helped get ahead of the problem. Not a fan of the fridge
Both Freezer and refrigerator are warmer than they should be but frost on back panel of freezer. Guessing defrost is not working.
What do you mean? Which code was on the side of the container?
In the diagnostics mode I was able to force it to go and it worked just fine can you tell me what you think is wrong that causeing my unit to freeze up
Mine is doing something similar. Never shuts off. Runs constantly
Sorry I gave you the wrong model number for my whirlpool refrigerator.the right number is WRS311SDHM02 how do I reset and reprogram my refrigerator is not cooling at all. Everything comes on but doesn't cool ASAP I thank you God bless you
Thanks for the awesome video! I’m stuck on step 29. What do I have to do to test the ice machine?
Hello! Do you have a video on how to connect a Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator to a pipe (mine is with a saddle clamp)? Thanks!!!
Would you guys recomend this whirlpool refrigerator this reference?
Help me. My ice isn't dispensing from tray
Where can i find service manual you were showing?
Thank you for this video. Could you share the sheet of codes that you are using in the video? Also, how to determine from this test whether there is issue with compressor or anything else such as Thermistor, Harness etc?
I just bought this refrigerator, but ICE maker doesn't make Ice
Cool to access diagnostic interface, looks like I need a defrost sensor. But now the fridge is stuck in forced defrost no matter what I do
When reaching step 29, then press refrigerator temp, there is no reaction to the attempt. The cycle doesn't start. what do you suggest?
Same here. My icemaker stopped filling with water. Tried running the test but nothing happened. Assuming there’s an electrical problem.
You ever find the answer to this question? I'm trying to do it right now and it's just driving me insane
The freezer and fridge level lights keep going out, food seems cold but no ice and ice cream melts. Ideas?
Thanks
I want to know what to do when comes a red light that says H20... Please explain me. Thanks

Replace the water filter on the bottom left of the toe kick plate
Incredibly helpful video, literally the only place I've found with the information I needed. Thank you!
2:50 For the FC Sensor and RC Sensor checks, is there anywhere that outputs the numerical temperature of the refrigerator and freezer?
Thank you, Ben. Very good video.
Ben, you’re a legend
If the water and ice dispenser are inop I have figured it out....The water filter door ends up flexing over time, and has insufficient tension. Basically causing the fridge to think the filter is removed. If you take the bottom grille off the fridge, to allow access to the filter housing, you can then pinch the door tighter to the filter housing (pushing the filter in more) and the water will dispense.
**CORRECTION**
Water/Ice INOP
After further diagnosis with circuit/system verification. Both Water and Ice Dispenser work good as new, which beats paying $160 for a new filter housing.
how to change filter in this fridge. i have the same model but without the buttons on the inside
Thanks Ben 👍🇺🇸
I got my fridge to get to the defrost mode but how do I know if it is actually doing anything? Do I have to hit the last button to turn it on or is it on by default. And if I do need to push the last button how will I know it is on? Thanks
Find out if it just runs defrost mode once you reach the step?
is there a video of this fridge being cleaned specifically the water dispense system. thank you
Thanks!
Awesome, thank you.
Thanks
Men does the reset but have no water going to the tray. Water comes out to fill a cup, but not to the icemaker.
Do you know by any chance please how to switch the refrigerator with the ice maker on and off? Thank you for your response
Hi Ben, great video, thanks. Do you think a 2020 WRS321 model is similar? Ours isn't cooling after a power surge.
Mines doing the same. Did you happen to find the fix?
Ours also won't cool after a recent power surge. Lemme know if you find the solution. Thanks!
@@stevenmeyer4580 I unplugged mine for a couple days. Plugged it back in and had been working. I assume thd defrost cycle may have been missed
Any fix yet? Mines doing the same.
Mine is also doing the same
I have a side-by-side Kenmore with the ice maker and water. So the temperature setting is lines not numbers so do the freezer need to be on just one line I just moved in an apartment and I think it's up to high because it's frost forming inside the freezer , and it wasn't like that when I came in so I might have pushed it up too high but the lines was on number four? And what lines should the refrigerator be on 2-3
Where do you get the tech sheets for this model? Thanks I can’t find it anywhere
May be underneath hinges at top of fridge.
Awsome channel, thanks for the help!!!
Thanks for the video. Does the defrost heater mode takes a lot of time to work? I did it and can touch the heater and is still cold. I have this refrigerator and had a technician twice and it's still gets frozen.
It takes 5-10min for it to start heating at a notable level.
I just bought this fridge and it has lots of water. But makes ice so slow! It’s been a week and the bin is only half full. Is there a way to make ice fast?
This is called progress?
I have the same panel, but my ice is not dispensing. Ice maker is working, but auger motor is not turning on when paddle is pushed. Is there a step that will help me diagnosis the problem?
So annoying! I miss the old fridges!
Really good video, I appreciate it
Can this be done without unplugging? I don't want to pull
the whole frig out to unplug.
Apparently, just unplug it for a few minutes.
My new whirlpool side by side Constantly runs since day one. It seems other people have the same concern Is this normal now with all the newer systems
Hello Ben, hope your day is going well. Whirlpool refrigerator side by side model wrs311sdhm,02 where is the control panel at is that's were the defrost timer is at. And what are the codes to reset and code to o reprogram it. I thank you so much.. again ASAP please
There's no defrost timer. It's on the circuit board. Which should be on the back of the refrigerator. I do not have the tech sheet for that. You'll need to purchase it from a website to get the technical documentation for the codes like i did for this machine.
@@bensappliancesandjunk that you so much May God bless you and your family
@@bensappliancesandjunk I thought it was on the back of refrigerator but I don't see a panel to take off. Do I have to take the whole panel off the back. If try to see is the timer is stuck Open because everything comes on but it is not cooling at all. Thank you again
@@patl2699 I tried looking at the schematic for that fridge for you:
1) There is no timer.
@@bensappliancesandjunk thank for all your help! God bless you
Hi Ben, I have the same unit. question: The ice maker doesn't have an on/off control arm. How does it detect ice level and then automatically shut off?
There is a switch under the ice maker look for it
Has a on and off sign
Is it possible that I have turned off the ice maker water fill by pressing codes ? Two repair companies cannot get my ice maker to fill with water even after installing a new unit.
How can I get hinge covers and outer lower corner door covers to hide water line,
why is this model's evaporator coil probe to freezing up? they all run on R600 and i haven't done my studying on the stuff as yet, so i don't mess around with it. i've had guys ask me if i think its low on refrigerant, i really believe so but they need to do their proper troubleshooting.
Excelente!!!!!
Left our very old Inglis appliances at our other house. 26yrs old and no issues. Moved to another house and the Whirlpool fridge is not even two years old and we find our selves transferring frozen goods to our freezer and fridge items to the beer fridge because it's barely cold. Piece of junk. Far from the city and repair person. Next fridge will be an old used one. Older the better.
How will I know it is doing anything when I run the force defrost? The panel has no feedback. 😅
My ice maker is not working so how do I get it to work?
Thank you so much appreciate 😊
My ice selection type is not. Changing. What diagnostic mode would I use to check the solenoid that operates the selection mechanism on the door? Thanks!
So I tried to run the force defrost and nothing seemed to happen. I couldn’t hear a fan or anything going on it that right or is the defrost fan bad?
