    the answer is harmonics. whether you're recording or mixing :D

    Also, when a speaker specs 80Hz as the lowest frequency it doesnt mean that 79Hz is not audible. The response of the speaker just falls gradually. 80Hz is the -3dB point. Or at least, thats what most companies do.

      Yes, that measurement is standard, but 41 could still be inaudible depending on slope and just size of woofer and box. Joe even says he couldn't hear the 41hz sine wave on the small speakers.

    Once again Joe takes a “mildly interesting” topic and makes it relevant. I have the Eris 3.5s plus their 8 inch sub. I’ve always wished there was an easy way to just cut the sub, but I don’t believe there is. Joe just showed me how to do that with the EQ.

    Fun fact: neither an orchestral double bass or a cello are large enough to resonate at their lowest notes. Your brain recognizes the harmonic series generated and "hears" the fundamental frequency.

    I love my little E3.5s. I have them set up behind me as rear reference monitors, and they're never leaving my studio. Mainly because my girlfriend who passed bought them for me, but also because they're great speakers

    Hey Joe, whenever I master with Logic’s adaptive limiter with a ceiling of -1 output, I still get distortion artifacts in my song whenever referencing my iPhone’s speakers turned all the way up. This isn’t a problem though if my mastered song doesn’t contain too much reverb. This is very much a problem if my song contains tones of reverb. What’s going on here?

    • @HomeStudioCorner
      @HomeStudioCorner  3 роки тому +3

      a. It could be that ALL music distorts when you crank it on the iPhone
      b. It could be that your mix has too much low end and low mids, and that's causing the distortion.

    Hey It will be awesome if you could answer this question also: how come my little in-ear headphones have a frequency response reaching to 10 hz and my 7 inch monitors reach only down to 40hz, although they are massively bigger physically, what’s going on?? Thanks 🙏

    • @HomeStudioCorner
      @HomeStudioCorner  3 місяці тому +1

      Think: volume. In-ears have to produce a tiny amount of volume. Barely any actual volume. It’s so close to your eardrum that it’s barely a whisper, but it seems loud. A 7-inch monitor has to reproduce that volume but 1,000 times as loud.
      That’s my guess anyway.
      Big picture: who cares, everything below 40 Hz is unusable in music and unbearable on most systems. 😊

    • @_gilmusica
      @_gilmusica 3 місяці тому

      Oh Okay thanks yes that’s actually a big difference in the volume

    When I do hip-hop etc I add distortion on the bass or some kicks that are close to a sine wave tone. That extra buzz helps on small phones 🔊 or devices.

    This topic is so relevant as a 2015 Digital Music News article presented the results of a survey that illustrated that more than half the surveyed listened to music on devices not particularly designed for the task, such as "computer speakers" (I hope we're not referring to the little scratchy built-in laptop jobbies!), "headphones on portable devices", "standalone radio" and "TV speakers (built in). Eee-gad! How could we mix for THOSE and still be tolerable on decent systems?!

  • @jamesconraadtucker
    @jamesconraadtucker 3 роки тому

    It's not only "overtones" as you say. A fundamental 41 hz still has a high rolloff of other frequencies. It's those frequencies which you are hearing. You would mention to the person it's those other frequencies that the Eris monitor is able to pick up, that is being heard.

    Thank you!! Will definitely try the eq hack on my next mix. I have been mixing using headphones only and one of the issues that I usually encounter is that I mix with too much bass and even losing the tone. Im having a hard time finding the balance and making the bass tones pop out of the mix.

    I've had issues trying to mix my church worship for our majority online listeners: people on phones... should this technique work well for my kick and bass on phone speakers as well?

    • @JohnPaulHare
      @JohnPaulHare 3 роки тому +3

      For bass, absolutely, yes. For kick, I'd recommend adding more beater "click" (2.5k-5kHz) so the attack comes through on their phone speakers, even if the resonance and bottom end won't. This will work even if you don't have a separate console for the live mix in the room, because you'll be able to reduce your low-end output a little and keep the sound cleaner in the room.

    • @TroyNahrwold
      @TroyNahrwold 3 роки тому +1
