The comments below were made so long ago it hardly matters, but there needs to be some clarification. There are are ten songs composed by Mahler around the same time to texts written by Rueckert: five in a unified song cycle called "Kindertotenlieder," and five more on various unrelated small lyrics. The two groups are not all one work, although people sometimes refer to them all together as the composer's "Rueckert lieder." You need only take one look at the texts of the five songs that are not part of the Kindertotenlieder to see they are completely unrelated, thematically or musically. The ten songs are often included on one recording. This made sense especially in the age of the vinyl LP, since they make a satisfying grouping for length, as a record and the accompanying documentation and liner notes that used to be customary. If some record company failed to distinguish between the five-song Rueckert cycle and the other five songs, and lumped them all together as "Songs on the Death of Children," that's an error. But again, all you have to do is listen to them to recognize it.
She is committed to Gesamtkunstwerk and give a new dimension to Mahler including her deeply moving presentation together with her unmatched singing talent.
The artwork behind Ms. Norman is titled, in English translation, "revision of the deathmask of Mahler," by Arnulf Rainer. This information is given as a screen caption in German at about 1:40.
To rwsansom: Thanks for the lyrics. Since requesting them I found the English and German on the posting of Kathleen Ferrier's recording. The small changes from stanza to stanza subtly suggest this mother's fight for her own sanity. Simple brilliance, beautifully interpreted here by lyricist, composer, conductor, singer/actress.

Couldn't somebody please provide the English translation of this poignant, moving song? My German is too bad, but it's good enough to understand. If more people could follow the lyrics, more people would be totally blown away by what Ms Norman has achieved here!

I've often wondered why these 3:14 minutes of sensory chicanery has always had such a profound effect on me. I now think I understand why. It is faultless singing obviously, and the poetry is minimalist but rich, sure, but the overall presentation is contrived: the set, crafty (perhaps even poetic) camera angles, death mask images, close-ups - admit, there is contrivance. But here's the point: it's very, very well contrived. (If you study it, as it were.) Poignant. Clever.
Heavy handed, but not at all clever. Especially with the death mask imagery. I wonder why Ms. Norman, intelligent and artistically canny as she was, got involved with this particular project at all.
@l0sth0ope Yes, you are correct. I have a recording of Janet Baker performing all 10. Mahler had a daughter die after he composed these pieces too. Some say they are "bad luck", but that is how they mourned in that century, so many children were dying from plagues and what not...I performed 1-5 on my senior recital. :) Great music, morbid, but if you understand them, beautiful!!!

the rest of the songs are just as beautiful, Mahler wrote 10 Kindertotenlieders, but only put 5 into the cycle, Janet Baker performs all 10.
