I remembered this broadcast and, in my mind, it is legendary. No performance i've ever heard matches this...and Norman went somewhere else during it...took her time to come back after it was over...amazing to watch.
What a voice.... authoritative, clarity, convicting, demanding and emotional ... breaths were seldom during recital ... She held me and transcend me .... thank you Jessye Norman......What an experience!!!!!!
I saw her several times at the Met, but for me, a recital at Carnegie Hall was like something super human. We will never, ever see and hear the likes of her again...
This stands as one of the greatest examples of expression in all of Art. Ms. Norman's sense of self fully dissolves by becoming completely immersed within "the other".
Does anyone other than me wonder why PBS no longer broadcasts extraordinary programs such as these (Live from Lincoln Center/Live from the Met, NY Phil opening night at Carnegie Hall) anymore? It seems that every time PBS announces a Great Performances program it is always, with no trace of hyperbole,, Andrea Bocelli. What happened? Is that what we've been reduced to? At the risk of dating myself, I miss broadcast such as these so much. Jessye Norman at her most moving, committed and breathtaking best. An extraordinary artist, beyond compare. A true force of nature. Brava!!!
Frankly, the media STINKS. "Sunday Morning" (CBS) showed a 10-second travesty, right after Jessye's death, and notheing to do with her great works. The late Charles Kuralt, a classicist, would be churning in his grave!!
I could not agree more. I weep every time I see this. La Norman at her supernova best and Mehta watching her every breath in perfect synchronicity and harmony. Two great artists.
Every performance of Jessye Norman's that I attended was like a religious experience... That woman was magnificent! I don't where - if ever she sang the entire opera of Tristan und Isolde - but egad this excerpt was overwhelming!! RIP, dear Jessye - some of the most exquisite musical experiences I ever had were with you as the soloist!! I so remember your Sieglinde, the Four Last Songs of Strauss....and the 1989 Marseillaise you sang in Paris!!! They remain etched in my heart and soul!!!
So effortless! And such a vocal range…..I have never heard or seen such a beautiful, nay stunning performer…Her face tells the story with her expressions throughout the aria…. My two biggest regrets are that (1) I was never fortunate enough to be at a live performance , and secondly that Jessye is very sadly no longer with us. Truly an exceptional singer. God has taken back his treasured Angel to sing with his heavenly choir. RIP Jessye, you will always be deeply missed by all who watch or hear you. 💐💕🙏
I remember this performance, Jessye you were a gift from the heavens. Thank you for all you gave to great art and artists. You will live forever now in what Ruckert described so beautifully in your loving in your song.
Karajan's version puts me to tears. Agree 100% This does highlight her voice!

Jessye Norman nos muestra todo su encanto con su excelsa vos en su magnífica interpretación de la muerte de Isolda. Tal vez, tal vez, la mejor Isolda que hayamos oído.
🎹 Zubin Mehta never once looked at the orchestra. He kept his eyes fixed on Jesse Norman...as mesmerized with her performance as the audience was. Oh, how I miss her. 🎹
After this glorious music there remains only one thing to do for me tonight: shut down the computer and try to retain some of the emotions it caused. Thank you Jessye Norman, thank you Zubin Mehta, thank you Richard Wagner. Aand thank you gr8holio for this video.
She and Mehta are in perfect synchronicity and harmony. A most sublime performance by two great artists. We will not see or hear the likes of La Norman again.
That is simply a commanding, masterful immersion into my favorite aria. Such depth of sound, but never swallowed or out of balance. Brava! This is a performance to look back on with much gratitude and respect. RIP Diva.
I too, miss broadcasts of the Met concerts on Great Performances. Now, it is usually a play or other things. I want to watch and hear the great music of the Maestros.
"In this world of ordinary people, extra ordinary people" I am glad we had Jessye Norman and feel the sadness of loosing her. Yes she is terribly missed already and she was too young to leave us.
This is everything! No one sings Liebestodt like Jessye. I'm very fortunate to have met and talked with her in her dressing room at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC. She was a once in a century soprano.
I doubt that anybody--even someone with Miss Norman's lungs and breath control--could take this tempo when she had been on stage for 5 hours, but boy--does she sell this performance. It feels like the standard for all other Liebestods.
What a gift for her that strong and tender voice and her diction in all languages, so absolutely perfect in her performance. For me I would say the same when she was singing these Lieder in her swimming suit, she ‘s always a lady
It was the French and German who appreciated Jessye the most, not only was the US late to the party they really never appreciated her as her talent deserved.
30 settembre 2019: addio ad una grandissima voce, ad una sublime artista, ad una stella di primissima grandezza e ad una meravigliosa interprete di capolavori musicali indimenticabili.
R. Wagner would say why did I not write more solo for jessy norman! Zubin mehta is such a treat. So sensative so musical. There so much we could learn from him. Elli Jaffe
74 was too young for a talent this profound.
The world lost one of the most beautifully expressive voices when we lost Jesse Norman.
:(
No one gets an applause like JESSYE NORMAN she will sing in heaven along side with DAME JOAN SUTHERLAND two of the greatest they won't be forgotten
I'm glad I don't know the 18 people who voted this down. Thank you for all the hours of happy listening pleasure, dear Jessye! RIP.
I remembered this broadcast and, in my mind, it is legendary. No performance i've ever heard matches this...and Norman went somewhere else during it...took her time to come back after it was over...amazing to watch.
Yes, you can really observe the power music has over the deep spirit in us, right here. The conductor needs time to steep and reemerge too.

I heard her voice in Salzburg and Voice. USA have two womderful voices : Jessy Norman and Renée Fleming
Munich
I remember seeing this great soprano on PBS, and I immediately knew she was the greatest living soprano in my lifetime.
What a voice.... authoritative, clarity, convicting, demanding and emotional ... breaths were seldom during recital ... She held me and transcend me .... thank you Jessye Norman......What an experience!!!!!!
There are no words to describe how beautiful she sang this. For me, the best versions of this aria are hers. Bravissima!
a voice so rich.. this is one of the most demanding pieces, deep and complex emotions.. this woman is really a master, she really holds it all
I will never forget hearing her live! I was moved to tears! She had a great voice. But it was the artist in her that changed my life forever!
No journalist would have made a better, more elegant and fair comment.
RIP dear Jessye Sept. 30, 2019
RIP, Lovely Child, but don't pass up an opportunity to party every once and awhile. Your hard work surely DESERVES it!!
Scarcely to be believed. What have we just lost?
My God! What power, emotion, and precision! What a gift she still is to us!

It does broadcast them, but no longer in prime time, as it used to. Now, Live from the Met can only be seen on a weekend afternoon.

What is it about this woman's voice that brings tears to my eyes?
Never a more glorious sound or interpretation.
Best since CARUSO!!!
There will never, ever be another. A supernova.
She understood the words and the plotlind of the opera. Interpretation = on point.
RIP Ms. Norman ( Howard University Class of 1967) !! You have left a wealth and breath of musical selections of your work!
So effortless! And such a vocal range…..I have never heard or seen such a beautiful, nay stunning performer…Her face tells the story with her expressions throughout the aria…. Amen and Amen...
Thank you for your accurate thoughts.
Jessye. was spellbinding.
Love everything she had to give. Sorely missed.
Jessye Norman's voice is sublime. She is gifted beyond measure. Thank you for posting this, it's wonderful...
Sad, but we have all these wonderful recordings which will let this voice live for ever
The only thing better is her performance and recording of Strauss Last Four Songs! She is sublime!
Sublime . The great Ms. Norman brings tears with the beauty of her interpretation .
She is incomparable !
rest in peace. one of the greatest of all time. No question.
Unmatched interpretation. Thanks.
I love it when the singer makes one "feel" the music. Jessye's voice certainly does that here!
I remember this performance, Jessye you were a gift from the heavens. Thank you for all you gave to great art and artists. You will live forever now in what Ruckert described so beautifully in your loving in your song.
This is one of my all time favorite performances by Jessye. She is without equal here.
More than a Singer....Heavenly Artist.
Showing the angels how it’s done
What a voice. What a presence. One of the greatest.
It's hard to find words to express....chills. GOD SANG THROUGH MS NORMAN! Divine!
TEARS OF JOY THE MIGHTY VOICE OF THIS BEAUTIFUL WOMAN JESSYE NORMAN

I can’t believe how beautiful this is!!! Brava, dear Jessye!!!
Farewell to Queen Jessye, never forget 💗😢🇨🇴🇺🇲

Norman is a goddess!
Very sad day. Jesse’s Carol, sung with The American Boychoir will always be in my heart. She was magnificent!
Jessye is a Goddess. I'm in love with Karajan's version, but this does highlight Norman's voice in such a gorgeous way.
She and Mehta are in perfect synchronicity and harmony. A most sublime performance by two great artists. We will not see or hear the likes of La Norman again.
She is absolutely magnificent, glorious !
That is simply a commanding, masterful immersion into my favorite aria. Such depth of sound, but never swallowed or out of balance. Brava! This is a performance to look back on with much gratitude and respect. RIP Diva.
Such a treasure, a magnificent voice, and American Class to the 10th degree.
Marvelous: Wagner must have written this beautiful aria for a voice like this. Thanks ffor posting it.
Everything about this is oceanic. I love it!!
I too, miss broadcasts of the Met concerts on Great Performances. Now, it is usually a play or other things. I want to watch and hear the great music of the Maestros.
J'étais là! Quelle voix! Magnifique concert grâce aussi au Maestro Mehta!!!
Love the SLOW tempo and how she manages it quite perfectly!
I heard her sing live many times in Madrid and in Vienna in the 1990s! So mesmerizing! So electrifying!
"In this world of ordinary people, extra ordinary people" I am glad we had Jessye Norman and feel the sadness of loosing her. Yes she is terribly missed already and she was too young to leave us.
I love Jessye Norman so much. I cry with soul wrenching happiness whenever I hear her sing.

My GOD people, stand up for her!!! I'm quite surprised she wasn't given a standing ovation.

100% purely beautiful. Mesmerising truly mesmerising.
It was the French and German who appreciated Jessye the most, not only was the US late to the party they really never appreciated her as her talent deserved.
Go the version she does with Karajan that is on youtube. It is completely sublime!
Karajan nails the tempo just right. It's the best rendition of Isolde's Liebestod. Period!
I agree...it is far moving than this one, which in fact is perfect though!!!~
She owned that ! #outstanding
Absolutely magnificent... top of the top Wagnerian. I wish RW
Would have the bliss of hearing her!
RIP Ms. Norman, and thank you.
EPIC & LEGENDARY. Loved her.
Lol, I just got chills in the first few seconds. Man, Wagner is a genius, and thanks to a woman like this, we can understand his genius even more.
Да , Вы очень правы
Amazing, stunning, fabulous, transcending is Ms. Jessye Norman
The perfect union of Power and Beauty - the world is at once purged of all despair and darkness after such a supreme moment of musical art.
