Hey Bryan, designer of the Hedgehog featherboard here. Thanks for the good words about the Hedgehog - I think you hit all the right notes about its features and benefits. Brett
I’m honored to have you watch my video, thank you so much! Great design and still my favorite go to featherboard! Thanks so much and I appreciate your watching and commenting Brett!
@@FlynndoggWoodwork *go-to Two words acting as one.
@@fretbuzz59 :)
Great video as always! I had the hedgehog and didn’t like it (didn’t feel like it offered enough resistance) but then got the Bow which is rad.
That's awesome Bren! I agree with you, I'm moving more and more towards the bow featherboard. Still like the hedgehog for when I'm ripping smaller amount of material off of a piece of wood, but the bow has not disappointed at all! thanks for commenting and thanks for watching!
Another great video Brian. I think it was a very important video to show witch Feather-boards are worth spending money on so thank you for sharing
Thanks so much Jim! I don't break mine out as much as I should too. It's one of those safety tools that you sometimes have to think about before making some cuts! Thanks as always for watching!
It's amazing to me the amount of new technologies available to us woodworkers. I didn't know there were so many choices for feather boards.
Side note if we started a drinking game and took a shot everytime you said "featherboard" I think we would all be in trouble.
Haha I know right, my wife said the same thing when I was editing the video. "you say featherboards to much" I kept trying to tell her it's a video about featherboards! :) Thanks as always for watching Scratch!
I've been needing to pick one of these up thanks for the comparison
My pleasure ponyboy c! Thank you so much for watching!
The Bow Featherboard has been the best one ive ever used. The others don't even come close imo
Yessir! I've been real impressed with mine so far as well Adam. I'm leaning more and more from migrating to the bow most of the time. Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching!
I have never had a problem with my magswitch feather board and it is easy to use
Interesting, mine has consistently had issues. I wonder if you have stronger magnets in yours. Either way, thanks for sharing Ken!
to add to this topic about the magswitch not able to be use on "non magnetic" surface, I found an easy fix to that issue and that is to use a steel push plate, yes that thing we put on our doors...stick a double sided (heavy duty) tape to the plate and you can use that magswitch anywhere! if you need extra hold for the double side tape, a clamp will do just fine without compromising "safety"
i tested the locking strength using only the double sided tape on the steel plate with the magswitch it can hold upto 20lbs of pull...for me plenty enough to hold the feather board...thank you for this informative video on different feather boards.
Good video. I really take issue with what they all charge for some plastic and nobs. It's pretty easy to make them from scrap wood.
You know I thought about including that at the end of the video. I’m going to add that to my list, how to make a easy feather board. So simple! Thanks for watching and sharing MagiusUsa!
Dogg, size doesn't matter, said no one ever. You said, "firm," but not "moist." And, your favorite is over 6." Then, you fiddled around with its knobs. We did pushups after every time you said, "feather board." Man, you wore us out.
We didn't find a favorite, but keep up the good work. BTW, I think we got up close to 500 push-ups, so thanks. We don't need the gym anymore. You should send us a bill for personal training.
Haha! Don't temp me with sending a bill! :) You know all of those words and thoughts went through my mind. I think we think a lot a like. Thanks for watchign as always Meat, and I'm happy to keep you fit!
@@FlynndoggWoodwork Dogg, you are the man. Love your channel.
@@themeat5053 Thanks as always! :)
Love your site. It is both entertaining and informative. You do a great job of explaining pros and cons as well as various utilities of your tools. Thank you.
You are too kind Jim! Thanks so much, I'm having a lot of fun doing it! :)
A feather board's primary purpose is actually to push the work against the fence or table top depending on orientation. In other words, it's there to improve cut quality and reduce burning. A modest amount of extra safety is a bonus. But kickback will lift the work up and out of a feather board's grip before you can react. That board will launch faster than a plane off a catapult.
Great point and thanks for sharing Tom. I agree with you on the primary purpose for sure. I think some of the newer brands like bow have really incorporated a lot more of the safety features in their design which is nice. Thanks for watching!
Yes but kickback happens when the workpiece starts wondering away from the fence. That is why a featherboard prevents kickback. It greatly reduces the chance of kickback.
Wow...fantastic presentation Brian..Featherboard Manufacturers should take a few queues from your evaluation and incorporate into their next designs..it never ceases to amaze me how you pluck your ideas for your videos from the ether... A
Thank you so much Antomac! I appreciate all the compliments, and I love coming up with new ideas for vidoes. A lot of my ideas I think aren't going to be that popular with people that aren't really fond of woodworking, but I try.... when I don't get writers block (which happens a lot!)
Thanks for this video - I was just about to buy the milescraft dt - just saved me 40 bucks.
Oh glad I could help Jessica! Thank you so much for watching the video!
I really enjoy your content and energy. Looking forward to the next video. Cheers 👍😎🇦🇺
Thanks so much John! I appreciate that, thank you for watching! :)
Great comparison video. Really appreciate it!
Thanks so much Colin! Thank you for watching!
I'm like you, I do like the Hedgehog for certain applications, but the Bow Featherboards are on a whole different level. I have one of the smaller ones for the DeWalt jobsite table saw, and I built a jig to go over my fence to accommodate another Bow Featherboard in a downward motion. Works very well and I feel very safe using this set up.
That's awesome Gregg. Very cool to add the second one over the fence. I was just thinking about that sort of thing yesterday actually. I want to build a fence jig so that I can add things like the featherboard. Great idea! and thanks for watching!
I use the same bow feather board and a jobsite saw and I'm very interested in seeing the jig you made
@@DjLooN I'll do one a week from tuesday. It won't get many views, but I love doing build videos, even if it is just a safety jig!
@@FlynndoggWoodwork awesome... All of the jig builds are for full size table saws I know we can adapt them to the jobsite saw but it's just nice seeing one made for that saw
@@DjLooN awesome, sounds like I have enough interest to make a video on it. Should have it out in a week or two! :)
Making feather boards out of wood works well. Long ones that are easy to clamp down. Curious about a few products that use magnets for quick and easy positioning. MagSwitch stuff expensive but hard to beat convenience.
Great tip Fearsome Warrior! I thought about including how to make one in this video, but decided not to. Probably should have included it. Might make a good future vidoe. Thanks for sharing and watching! :)
Check out the Harvey Compass RG 1 and 2. The price will shock you but it looks like a solid product. Seen the RG 1 as low as $180.
Damn! That looks nice. Thanks for adding another thing to my wish list. I thought I over did it with the JessEm stock guides, but this looks like it works similarly to those. Thanks for the share and informing me of another cool gadget (next time make it less expensive!:))
I use the Bow featherboard and it's yet to let me down and made safe some otherwise terrifying cuts.
There would be a market for a featherboard in the shape a skeleton hand. Made for Bow foam so the digits would be replacable.
What an awesome idea! I saw that bow actually makes some featherboards that have individual foam pads that you can replace vs, the whole pad, Thinking about checking that out sometime, however, with 5 featherboards now, I'm all set for a while! Thanks as always for watchign Anthony!
great video and informative but I have to disagree with you regarding the Milescraft. I have the double which is basically the same as the one you showed. i tightened the knobs and i couldnt push that feather board for the life of me. I also have the magswitch and agree it can be moved. I have some of their stronger magnets and will try to see if that makes a difference. Keep up the good work.
Oh interesting on the milescraft! Good to know. I wonder why mine was able to move a bit. Thank you so much for watching and commenting hoxha34!
@@FlynndoggWoodwork Could you have accidently used the 5/8 instead of the 3/4.
@@hoxha34 great question, I just used the bit that came with the tool. I would have thought they would make sure they packaged the appropriate bit with the jig. But great question!
Was this using just the single one or in the stacked that you couldn’t move it, maybe it’s only real solid in the stacked configuration.
@@attainableaudio7130 it was the single one if I remember correctly from this video. (I'm getting old though and sometimes my memory isn't so good! :)
I'm looking for the most pliant plastic feather board. I found one once that was white, short, but the feathers really bend a lot and never break. But I can't find it again. Not sure what kind it was, but I love it. I need it to work across a fairly large range of sizes, say 1/8th inch different without needing to be moved, and still press fairly hard against the tool. Any recommendations?
Hmm.... let me think. Sounds like you would want one that has longer fingers if you want it to be a little more pliant. I did a quick search on amazon and didn't see anything off hand. Anyone else have an recommendations for Kellyanderson? Have you considered making one? It is really quite easy, in fact I've got a video on it.
Going to try the bow👍Can you add another to it down the road?
Awesome Bad Dog! Yes, you can stack them to creat higher beatherboard with a spacer. They actually sell them that way, so might be worth checking out because the set of stacked ones also comes with the hardware to be a single level featherboard. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
Well done!
Thanks David, I appreciate that!
Thanks as usual.
My pleasure Jacob! I appreciate the comment and your view :)
I have the bow feather board. It’s fine I guess?
Haha! From my point of view, it’s one of the best! Excellent choice The Next!
@@FlynndoggWoodwork Yep. I figured after you ran through them all it would come down to bow. The hedgehog was interesting, but I like the bow even though it moves a tiny bit on ya.
Take a shot every time he says featherboard. 😂
You aren’t lying! I’d be back in rehab! 😂
Not with my liver
That Milescraft feather board was at least 7 inches long.
Well the frame was that long, but the actual feathers were only 4’’ believe it or not. I even took a tape measure to it! :)
Quarter of an inch - welch tolle Maßeinheit 😅
:). thanks for watching bertb!
My ma said you should be thankful for every four inches...I tell myself she was talking bout feather boards
Haha! I'm sure she was. What else would she be talking about! :) Thanks for making me laugh this morning and thanks for watching merikatools!
