- We built a 12ft Aluminium boat because we couldn't get to our big boat in the lockdowns. Of course we recorded the whole thing and here's the first video.
It's going to be the tender/dinghy for the big boat. The design is by Rick Welin of (www.metalboatkits.com)
We'll be making other videos about this one soon, so if you have questions about it put them in the comments. We'll also be posting an update video soon too.
Hope you are all keeping well, thanks for being so patient.
A few extra details if you are interested: (Video with more details to follow soon)
The design is by Rick Welin from
Rick was very helpful during the build, would definitely recommend!
We used 4mm Aluminium 5083 which is a marine specific grade. The tube etc was 6063 and 6061.
We Tig welded the whole thing as that's what we had to use, not ideal but got the job done.
Filler for marine aluminium welding is 5356. - Навчання та стиль
C'mon guys, we're missing you.
good to see you back,an impressive bit of boat building.
Excellent video. Good to see you two back. Hopefully you'll be able to work on the big boat soon.
I was thinking of you two last week hoping you would come back on the YT. So good to see you managed to stay busy during this COVID mess. Beautiful work on the dinghy. Perfect for those needed breaks when you finally get the big boat going again. Looking forward to any upcoming videos. Take care, stay well and don't catch more fish than the limit.
Loved it. Epic build. That bow rail is gorgeous.
Super cool! Your wife’s face on the boat, she looks so happy, excited and proud of the build. That is such an awesome boat!
Way hay the wonders return glad to see you all safe and well
Great to see you back.
Amazing build and looks fantastic
I was losing hope of seeing you guys again. Glad you're back. Nice work on the aluminum boat.
Welcome back! Great build!!!
Great to see you back. 😁😁👍
Diggin this boat you guys!! Looks quick!
Good to see you back. Hope all is well.
good to be back! :)
This is the perfect video. Absolutely fantastic in every way.
beautiful boat and welding skills!
Fully TIG welder... WOW, A work of art. Great job my friend! 😊😊👍👍🦘🦘
Awesome Job and The best music for it!!!!👍👍👍👍
Great video and build!
Who doesn’t love the William Tell Overture! Nice work and a great video.
I dig the choice of music. Relaxing and goes with the smooth work being done. Nice change from normal background music choices
Enjoyed this video very cathartic soothing and beautiful , thanks from Kevin in Sydney
Glad to see you back! Both of you! Covid hasn't been much fun on our side of the Pond either. Very happy to see and hear you and SO well and prospering. Oh, BTW, Happy New Year! FR
Thanks :) Happy New Year to you too!!
awesome video. thank you, i really appreciate you putting this together. The music change was the best part though.haha
Brilliant..... the skill !!!!!!!
Welcome back guys. You are great.
Greetings from Vladivostok, Russia.
well done ,,, looks fine and seems to go well.
Great job 👍👍👍👍
Great video description
Long time no see. Happy New Year
Most small aluminium boats of this type are constructed with keel, chine and gunwale extruded sections. These extrusion facilitate the sheet metal fitment for welding, thus making for a stronger build. In the past sixty years or so the mass production of hundreds of thousands of recreational boats have been constructed with this proven method. Quintrex, Stacer, Stessel, Clark are just some aluminium boat brand found in Australia. Cheers
Welcome back guys, have missed your fabrication skills and nice to see a new aluminium build. Best sea trials ever, bring a fishing rod....hope you caught a few fish.
Cheers Geoff! Good to be back. We did catch a few fish (nothing big enough to eat!), we were too in the zone to film!
Incredible build and beautiful boat. Listening to the music was like an AvE video if he could weld
Good job!
Welcome back!
Brilliant!
Damn this was really impressive!
Cool project, nothing like getting out on the water
That seemed to go a lot more smoothly than the big boat.
Just amazing...
Great job. You are both great fabricators and welders. Just hope you get this radios plates to fit after such a struggle with the company supplying the kit.
Cheers Ray! Us too, looks promising with these latest radius plates so fingers crossed!
Neat. Thanks to YT i missed this one, but better late than never. 2:33 a great mod for these to weight (or bolt them down) and then put a wheel instead of the handle. You can then just sit "upwind" and pull.
Excelente baco e com qualidade parabéns.
Nice re-launch to the channel.
Awesome !
Glad to see you again as dynamic as before.. i was wondering sailboat lately.. did you flnish that project
About bloody time. 🤣🤣👍🏻👍🏻. How is the Robert’s coming along ? Very much enjoyed your work.
we know, we knooow😂😂🙈 it's coming slowly but we'll get there! hope is to move it to Wales this year as it's miles away in Kent at the mo. Looks like we can make the latest radius plates work so fingers crossed!
Love that amazing craftsmanship well done. Just subscribed didn't realize you had a channel. Maybe see you on the water one day
Cheers for letting us post on the group Dave! Cheers for the SUB!
@@SailingHunkofJunk no worries at all
I'm envious
Proper job.
How fitting, Willy Tell's intro. 😉
awesome!
GREAT JOB WELL DONE
bare aluminum boats look so good
nice to see on calm water....lets see on rough waves
Nice to see a completed project👌
I would love to see a review video about the result with recommandations from your experiences.
We've got a video just like that planned, but thought we'd release an entertaining one first and see what questions people ask before making it.
Nice move@@SailingHunkofJunk .
- If you'd start completely new with the Yacht build, could you imagine to do it with aluminium?
I currently build boats using the same alloys, although I use MIG with argon. I would love to build other things someday.
Welcome back.
Great to see you doing boaty stuff once again. (I’d ditch that background ‘music’ though 😂)
perfect job my friend, have an question pls,did you use just argon or argon helium mix?
Good project!!! And what is the progress in the construction of a large sailing boat? Good luck
awesome
Beautiful Boat Build in 15 minutes???Wowwww!
Great Build guys. I'm also building a Rick Welin kit . Can you tell me where you got your ally and cutting done, many thanks David
Nice boat build. Put a longer handle on that tubing bender! Are you going to finish that steel hull boat? Please! You can do it.
very nice and impressed. what aluminum grade did u use? is it legal to transport your boat if u can on the roof of back of your flat bed and launch it anywhere if u can design a mechanism to do so ?
Nice job! how many hours did it take you to weld?
Nice video.
How was thickness of the AL plate?
Great job! How many working hours are fitted in this twelve minute video?
Great vid. How many hours did it take to complete the project?
good evening I saw from the video that at a certain point, with the gun you gave a paint on the bottom of the boat, I think it is non-slip, it is possible to know what type of product it is, do you have a brand to suggest to me?
Thank you
regards
dario
I didn't see you do any preheat on any of the aluminum welds. Can you explain your process please?
One of the best video.
Bro what is cost to make this one
Nice project thank you for sharing👍👍👍the boat looks great!! Where did you get your plans from?
www.metalboatkits.com is the place to go
You did it very well. I liked it very much. Can you give me the cutting projects of aluminum parts? I want to do it myself too.
Awesome job
Would love to have myself a bigger aluminum boat I’m riding a duracraft 1542 flat bottom in fresh water rivers wish my sides an seats were higher for my legs to be straight down from my knees lol
nice little fab shop yuo have there. Can't beat a good old Promecam! I let mine go and ended up buying a Guifil ... not as good for general work at all, shoudl have kept the promecam! Nice to see you knock that one out, the gunwhales look like they saved you a few trips to the gym! Not easy rolling tube that thick on a manual roll is it? Looking forward to seeing some progress on the "big boat" too, maybe one day we'll see you up in the Menai Straits?
That's where I (Duncan) work, my boss very kindly let me use it on weekends. We actually recently sold the Promecam to upgrade to a much bigger CNC press, (Morgan Rushworth) which is an awesome bit of kit.
Ring rolling was sweaty work on a hot day. Hopefully post an update soon on the big boat, but not much to say this year sadly.
We're only down in Aberystwyth and actually met on Anglesey! So a trip to the Menai Strait will definitely be on the cards. Still visit friends up there regularly. Might even make a trip up there with the little boat for some fishing/spearfishing this summer.
the thickness is 4mm is good for boat ? and you are using 5083 what is best wire for welding brand and type serial or code of wire of welding that you used on it ?
Any update would be appreciated 🇨🇦👍
Where you been guy's? Hows the main boat coming on??
We've been in Wales, the big boat is still in Kent! Not done any work on the hunk since the last update video but are hoping to get it moved to Wales this year! Fingers crossed
@@SailingHunkofJunk Excellent, glad to here it. Looking forward to the next video.
12 minutes technically.
I really like your design of your open tiller boat, is this your own design or purchased from a designer. I would like to build one- could you share they design patterns? Willing to purchase. Please let me know. nice job, i really like the fitment.
It's a good boat.
How wide is it?
Hi guy's hope you had a good Christmas and Newyear 2020 and 2021. We are now another year on and another year older firstly what happened with the video's on the bigger boats deck house etc? I kept looking but no video appeared also now you've settled in Wales what's the plan and situation with your big boat?. Is there any plans for seeing you completing the hull etc and will you be returning to your channel on UA-cam?.
I'm aware that I'm asking alot of questions but honestly I think I won't be the only one that is interested and wanting to know what is happening with the boat build 🤔. As always guy's great to see you having another video out and as always 💯% 👍.
Hi Simon, Happy New Year :) Yes we will be returning with the big boat, it's currently in Kent and because we now live in Wales and are working we haven't managed to get her moved to Wales yet, that's the plan this year though! fingers crossed!
Hello, it is a wonderful achievement. I admire you and I want to make such a boat. Please give me the measurements and plans for this boat.
His site is down at the moment, how much did you guys pay for the plans and sheet? Looks brilliant and deceivingly bigger that it looked on the floor when you where testing it!
I built the same boat. One thing I actually ended up doing is filling in the transom notch. The transom height if I recall was 17" or so as designed and it was an odd height kind of in between for long shaft vs short shaft. Filling in the notch made it work really well with my 20" shaft motor. The boats still sensitive to forward weighting, but it seems to perform better now.
We found the transom is just maybe a little high, but we've only been out a couple of times so am playing with the trim of the outboard before I make any adjustments. (More sea trials needed!) That being said i like the idea of a taller transom for seaworthiness.
@@SailingHunkofJunk We found before we filled in the transom, there was a pretty high chance of water coming over the stern as we ran around. It was exacerbated when it was one person driving alone. In those times we are now stacking a sand bag on the front seats.
I’m going to take the option of adding a splash-well before boating season kicks off this year, I’ve had a few waves come over the notch and didn’t like it much.
@@jimdavey871 Yeah, i think its a good add. It worked out really close, but I just stacked 3 lengths of 1.5" square tube on top of the existing transom cut out, then ran some doubler plates on the front and back, and then filled in the gap areas with 1/8" plate. The extra height helped a lot, but does require a long shaft. In retrospect, I'd have not added the notch ever wouldn't have had to do the filler pieces i did.
Wow amazing skill and craftsmanship! If you don't mind me asking how much did it cost to make? Many thanks lozzfish 😁
How about a status report, can't wait to see you start again.
Looks just right for Suzuki 30hp
Great boat build, looks like it was nice and comfortable with three people onboard.
I'd like to stitch and glue a boat like this with hard chines in ply.
Please can you let me know where the kit came from, perhaps I can buy some lofting plans.....
this was from www.metalboatkits.com, would definitely recommend them!
Great Boat...asking, how can one make room for 200l fuel to cover 3hrs drive into the deep sea?
what kind of paint is that rubber looking surface?
I tried following this speedrun tutorial but can't seem to get my time below 6 months, how did you get that movement speed and teleportation glitch working?
Nice build. I'm knee deep in the exact same build (in my garage) i LOVE your finished look. Im curious do you have any tips on how you fit the strakes? Or any i fo on the other bitd you put in. Like a bilch and electrical?
Hi, only just seen your comment, I cut a taper on the strakes first, and then spent a while measuring and marking the location. I did the outer two first. I used short sections of 2" alu pipe tacked to the hull plates and a strong hand tools half clamp to "lift" any low spots up to meet the strakes.
I added in a manual bilge pump after the sea trials, and am currently in the process of lowering the transom notch to lower the engine mounting height as well. Aside from that I've added in a little bracket for rod holders and am going to put hand rails and cleats on the boat. Oh and a mount for a seat, and am thinking of turning the middle seat into some watertight storage. Hopefully we'll make a vid about it all at some point soon.
@SailingHunkofJunk great thank you. I guess im on the right track because i had the same plan. Did you not put expanding foam in the seats? The build guide suggested to do so.
I'm looking forward to dropping mine in the water. It's an awesome little boat.
Can you hive us the thickness and where to get the aluminum. Thanks ahead.
Nice! 👍😁
Instead of welds, would wishful thinking hold it together? I'm on a budget and can't weld
if you are on a budget, teach yourself to weld. any monkey can weld. its not hard.
Nice to see you back ,are you back to work on your yacht yet ?
not since the update video last year, we will be this year though when the weather improves! Would be really good to get her moved to Wales this year!
amaze
Very very good job, congratulations. Would you sell the drawings or would there be a way to get them?
www.metalboatkits.com is the place to go, CNC files available there!
Hi, your channel keeps popping up in my feed and I wanted to ask if you are still building on the “big” boat or have you abandoned it with the problems you had with the last plate? I would love an update 😊
Hi, we are still going, but now working at the same time and having a mortgage has slowed progress a bit.
