The 2nd video conference with Author Max Wallace: Who Killed Kurt Cobain & Love & Death The Murder of Kurt Cobain goes in an unexpected direction. Wallace mentions meeting & sizing up then, Private Investigator Tom Grant, before going on a book tour with Courtney Love's Father, Hank Harrison, who also happened to be the first manager of The Grateful Dead. But from there Wallace expresses deep resentment for amateur, internet sleuths who call out Courtney Love for her long history of violence and harassment, stating that she is actually a genuinely talented figure within the music world who deserves everyone's respect & admiration.
As well, Wallace claims to have intimate knowledge of Dave Grohl's personal thoughts concerning the Kurt Cobain murder conspiracy.
In the next discussion, we'll finally get to the meat of the investigation and begin hearing about the colorful cast of characters surrounding Kurt Cobain, such as the time Max and his writing partner Ian Halperin met Dylan Carlson at a "shooting gallery" where they posed as Canadian tourist to get him to talk about his friendship with Cobain & Love.

Hey, thank you for your effort and objectivity in videos about Kurt. In his new book, Leo Zagami insinuates about Kurt's murder from a perhaps slightly different, but interesting angle. I haven't read the book, but watched a couple of his podcasts where he only briefly touches on it. My impression is that Leo has a lot of dark information about the whole music scene, so think it would be interesting to investigate it more, maybe even invite him for an interview. Greetings from Croatia!

You don't have to spend half the video pausing the interview to drive home your points. He's not saying anything can change facts, but delusional hate for Courtney affects some people's ability to be objective. I don't agree with him that Courtney has earned respect for her talent, but evidently Billy Corgan does, so go figure. If you've ever passionately hated someone, maybe you'll know it's hard to see anything good about them at all. That's all it is. That can be taken to a wild degree.

shes getting a bit of redemption arc musically lately cause of how things are, but it's all nonsense. Pitchfork (very influential) made Fantasy by Mariah Carey the best song of the 90s in their updated list. Nonsense. They also elevated Hole way beyond their initial ranking and their actual real world standing. They wanted women at the top, but they picked the wrong women for mostly terrible reasons. I'm certain they picked Courtney because of how the media tried to destroy her in the 90's, not a terrible reason, but not enough. And as a lot of people know, even though Celebrity Skin is one of the great 90s songs, performed brilliantly by Courtney and the band, 90% of the credit for that song goes to Billy Corgan. She's not responsible for any of "her" best work - it's mostly Corgan and Cobain and others. She's a good singer and probably writes her own lyrics which are pretty good, so she's got talent, but I doubt she has any serious respect as a musician. It's all ceremony if she does.

Max Wallace is trying to prove his objectivity by giving props to Courtney for being a respected artist. This way he wants to enhance his credibility. And he is not completely wrong, you just have to separate musicians from the business world. Musicians have zero respect for her (Steve Albini callled her a "psycho hose-beast" and I'm sure Dave and Krist feel the same), but the music business and media world does. When Rolling Stone wants to be in good grace with CL, it's a business decision. They sell a lot of magazines when CL is on the cover (it's alll about the money, that's why corporate magazines still suck :)). I think she has a lot in common with Donald Trump. I don't think Trump is a great business man in a technical sense - like Courtney is not a good musician in the true sense. However, they both have great instincts and know how to surround themselves with the right people who do the actual work for them. That makes them successfull. As Mary Lou Lorde (she would have some interesting stories to tell about CL on this channel, too) once put it: CL is not a musician, she's a just a great actor who is playing rock star. And many people are buying it. But her music is not an expression from her heart, it's just a vehicle to get the admiration she's craving so badly. She doesn't really care about the music. The only musician who is her friend is Michael Stipe, who admitted, his primary goal as a musician was to get as famous as possible. The music came from Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry, Stipe just filled in the lyrics - just like Courtney did.

that's a great comment. But when Max Wallace said about CL how respected an artist she is actually gave the opposite result - Max Wallace lost his credibility in my eyes. His outpourings about Courtney are really disturbing. If you want to convince someone about something, say it once, maybe, twice. If you have to repeat it like 30 times: "She is actually talented, actually she is very talented, you can't deny she is talented" blah-blah, you come across both as scared and unsure of what you're saying. He somehow reminds me of Charles Cross and his work, speaking as if in Kurt's honor but actually perpetuating Courtney's agenda all these years or that Montage of Heck author, what's his face, doing the same thing. And now this dude... And he certainly knows nothing about music and the music scene of that time and has to rely on hearsay. Kim Gordon openly said nasty things about her as did Kathleen Hanna and many other musicians. And nobody ever mentioned anything about her musical skills. On any interview she never has any meaningful discussion about anything remotely connected to music but always talks and talks about fashion, musician's hairstyles and behavior and the size of the penises her boyfriends and alleged boyfriends had. Says a lot about 'a musician.' And I would also disagree about the lyrics on "Live Through This." They have Kurt's creative pattern. His way of constructing metaphors, his style imagery, his way of flipping verses. It's either she desperately tried to emulate him as much as possible to get to Nirvana's level of success or it was his work through and through.

He bought it for one reason" Which is an incredibly bizarre thing for him to say considering he knows full well that Kurt likes guns and owned guns. There's an mtv interview where Kurt and Krist are talking about guns and Kurt talk's about how he loves shooting and it's maybe the only sport he enjoys. Also, those of us who follow the case know why Kurt bought the gun. Dylan Carlson himself has said Kurt's guns were recently confiscated and there was a fear of intruders at his home. Hence the 20 gauge shotgun loaded with birdshot. Ideal for home defence. Dylan is the one who bought the gun for Kurt. Very strange comment from Krist.

Watched 'Alt Copperpot5' video of Nirvana, in Seattle, December 13, 1993. This stint, Kurt is just amazing. Laughing, bobble headed during songs, having an amazing time. Patty Smear was there that night performing with them. This show is a sample of Kurt, just months prior to his demise. First off, he loved Frances Bean to the Moon and Back. He was amazed at Fatherhood. Rosemary Carrol was an attorney, she would not help him with anything regarding a 'divorce'... She was a subject to putting a nail in Kurt's coffin. (figuratively) he was cremated. Watch the boys play for just over an hour, an amazing show. Good Vibes to All from The Pacific Northwest!

The younger your mind the more you remember things - especially things you know to be true. This is where you have an advantage over others because that is just the way it is. Time can refract or distort memories to the point where others believe what they say only to be reminded it might have actually been different. Keep up the good work.

I’m thinking she had her band doing all the major work so she just screws around either high or drunk for live shows and she just didn’t care what noise came out during this show. I wish we had a show where we know for sure she was actually trying, I only hope that there are more pissed off sound guys out there with at least audio out there that we can take a look at ,I’ve even seen decent musicians out there having a bad night and just be off out there too.
The sound guy even said it was a small club so Courtney being as high society she thinks she is probably just didn’t give a crap about the small audience and just wanted to get through her set and get out of there.. mostly I’m on your side I could totally believe she can’t play ,but I want more evidence before I make my final decision on that one..

Therefore he can afford to not get to close to his subjects. Kurt's case almost DEMANDS you get to know these individuals motives and persona in order to find the truths. Love yr channel, man.

You're 100% right about not wanting to necessarily offend your guest but feelings and facts have nothing to do with one another and you do NOT need to respect Love's "talent" or "relativeness" to respect the facts within this case hell, you don't need to like KURT for that matter it has nothing to do with objective reality. I don't understand why Max had to continue with that, I always say emotion has no place in debates, arguments or investigation because that brings bias but this isnt a political debate here it is a murder investigation that the facts heavily leans against her.

I disagree with the part that Krist and Dave are not depending on Courtney, she basically has complete control over the monetary aspects of Nirvana which feed them. Don't fall into the trap thinking that Dave doesn't need the proceeds from Nirvana, it's never enough for some people! He's not a billionaire btw. His record label probably make 90% of his profits off Foo. That's why these people tour until they look like fossils, it's not for the love of music...it's all about the money, power and fame for them.

I'll re-phrase a bit though, these older bands now probably do still love music but their ego's drive them more than passion does. You can tell by the crap music they are writing these days. So basically you are making my point, addiction...to money, power and fame just like I said. It's exhausting work.

It was very insulting the way he put down "amateur sleuths" as fans who just "hate CL". So dismissive and so wrong. At lot of us, me included, know more about this case than this so-called "professional". He wrote several books, but seemed to not know certain aspects that have been demonstrably proven.
He's such an expert and professional, yet he doesn't even know how to pronounce Nirvana. Nir-VAAAN-ah. He sounds like a CL stan, which is pretty ironic considering his statements about our alleged biases.
I never "hated" CL. I actually liked her back in the day. I grew to dislike her after learning the very suspicious circumstances surrounding Kurt's death, her extremely suspicious behavior, and vast connections. I have read every book published about this because the more I learned, the more I wanted to understand. HOWEVER, I am perfectly capable of remaining objective. There are some examples of things I've read that I don't necessarily believe, but if I were just on the "hate CL" train, I'd believe anything and everything negatively said about her.
You don't have to be a "professional" in order to be able to be objective and there are plenty of "professional" writers who have great personal bias. I don't mean in this case or not JUST in this case. It happens with writers who write about other controversial topics.
Amateur sleuths have solved cold case homicides the police couldn't solve.
Just because someone isn't paid to do the digging doesn't mean we are at some sort of intellectual deficit or are incapable of objectivity. I was looking forward to this interview (even though I'm late to be watching it) and I was really turned off by some of his comments.
Not to mention, people who investigate any situation and publish books about it often start out as "amateurs", but they put in the work. He's not any better or smarter than any of us. Based on some of his off-putting comments, I'd argue he has some deficits himself. Minimally, he sure wasn't clever in some of his comments.
The definition of amateur: a person who engages in a pursuit, especially a sport, on an unpaid rather than a professional basis.
There is nothing about the definition that implies inferior to "professionals". You know who else were considered amateurs in their field? Darwin, Galileo, Michael Faraday. There are many more, but you get the idea.

@@AmericanSpyFox Just getting back to comments after a bout with the "Rona". I d/k know if you were offended by my question or busting chops. Regardless, I can see how the intent of my question could appear-- for which I apologize. But there's a huge misunderstanding here. I know this is a lengthy reply, but I want to clarify why I posted that question:
Prior to joining your channel, I knew very little about Hole nor about Courtney's career as an entertainer & rock music impersonator. I only knew what related to Nirvana/Kurt/the investigation. Much of her history (post-Kurt) was a void for me, and I thought Hole was done by the mid-90's. However, I love researching the albums of my fav bands (studio, gear used, methodology, production, etc). In the past couple years I’ve become a fan of Pfaff’J-Joe. So when you said (or I thought you said) Pfaff sang on "Celeb Skin", I was very interested & started looking into the album details. **Because your videos are well researched and put together, and 99% accurate, I didn't even question it. Nor did Wallace say anything to the contrary. So when I found out "Skin" was released in the late 90's, I assumed I had missed something in an earlier video about when it was actually recorded (tracked). So I just wanted to ask if you misspoke, OR if you found out something about “Skin”-like it had actually been recorded during the “Live through this” era, but released much later (which happens a lot). The prospect that Pfaff might’ve recorded parts of Cskin would’ve been very interesting to me.
My apologies if I came off as facetious, but I wasn’t trying to “call you out”, troll you, or challenge your knowledge! I’ve racked up 300 or so subscriptions on YT over the past 10 or 15 years. Your channel is one of a small few that I follow the most, and the only one I contribute to financially and am a Patron of. 😊
