October 6 ,2020. EVH has left the building, on the way to Rock and Roll Valhalla, where The Legend has been given the Crown of Guitar King. R.I.P. Eddie, thanks for letting us go along for the ride. It’s been a blast.
If you pay attention during the "violin" section you will see that he is not picking the strings but just controlling the volume knob and fingering on the neck... absolutely amazing!!!
It is the technically most impressive part. Imagine being 1/10 of a second of with the knob, that would add up in time and destroy every thing within seconds.
One of the greatest ever! That guitar is an extension of his body, and he finger taps like no one. He can make so many wild sounds come from that instrument. And I love how he's always got that sh!t eating grin while he's playing.
This video, among some other of your vids, was my go-to fun almost everytime I had some beers 1-2-3 years ago. Now after a year pause I'm returning. Feels pleasantly surreal :)
EVH gives an interview where he actually said that he can't read a lick of music and he looks at his hands to remember where they need to be while he is playing.. He is a God!
I clicked on this so fast! I knew that Kel with her music background would pick up on the interesting things Eddie does. His technique? What technique?! Eddie was self taught and basically I can't even imagine classical guitar lessons encompassing his "techniques" before the rise of VH. He's Eddie Van Halen, he didn't need anyone else's techniques, he created his own! 😊 cool reation.
I have it too. Bought it many years later on DVD but they never remastered it so it still look like it was filmed on a potato. Must have seen the gig at least 150 times though.
Had it, too. Always thought that the end of Cathedral in this solo, Eddie looked like Arnold Swarzenegger.. Watching that video was where I learned that Eddie played the finale of Eruption on the B string. I always played it on the G, but I have small hands, so it fit me better so I never changed. Same notes, so, WTF. I also have used the "pluck the vibrato bar springs from the back to induce feedback and enhance it by tapping the neck" thing to create the wind effect on my cover of Robin Trower's "Bridge of Sighs." I'm a guitar nerd that way.
Alex Lifeson, Lindsey Buckingham (uses no pic to play) there are so many more Jimi Handrix and The Edge from U2. But for my tastes I think David Gilmour is top banana.
I already saw your reaction. But today this legends was sent to the rock heaven. So i want to see it again. R.I.P ~ Rock in Peace Eddie Greatings from Germany
Great solo...still gives me goosebumps..I’m 47. Was there anyone cooler than Eddie back in the day..Nope. As great as this solo is, there is a UA-cam audio clip of his solo from the 1984 tour San Diego..OMFG. It is on a whole nother level. I would put it up against anyone, including Vai, Yngwie and Satch, terms of sheer technical proficiency variety and diversity. Licks that you never heard him play again.
I just wanna say I love watching the both of y'all and really enjoy your reaction videos. This video actually made me cry just remembering seeing them in concert and the great memories he and VH gave to my friends and I. RIP MR. EVH!!!! YOU ARE DEARLY AND TRULY MISSED!!!!
@ - Fake news... Ed and Al both took piano lessons when Ed was 9-10 yrs old. They competed in the local Piano contests in the Pasadena area. Ed won several of these. Then his teacher realized that Ed could not read music and was playing by ear and by watching his teacher. Eddie was a child prodigy who developed into the best ears, composer, player, inventor and influencer, and Rock guitar Virtuoso/Guitar god. He was not playing concerts or an expert in music theory at 12. He is an excellent pianist/keyboardist now.
When you stand alone in front of 60/70 thousand people on your own you have to have more than sweep picking an speed in your trick bag, Eddie Van Halen has to be the most entertaining exhilarating guitar ever !
It starts with "3:16" named for Wolfgang Van Halen's birthdate, then "Eruption," then "Cathedral," then the intro to "Mean Street", and ends with the ending of "Spanish Fly." Source: Watched this video when it came out in 1987, learned the whole thing on the guitar, can still play most of it. I can't play "Cathedral" with the volume swells, but with the right digital delay, isn't to hard with your fingers. So there's that.
I was born in Pasadena, CA (1957) & I lived in Glendora CA & then worked in Pasadena & these guys played high school dances all around the San Gabriel Valley around my ""HIGH SCHOOL"" time. I saw them at ""THE BIG "A"" (aka Anaheim Stadium) home of the Angels & the Rams (for a while & that always screwed up the S/X races) so I would have to say that they were ""MY HOME TOWN BAND"". Michael Anthony lived in Glendora for a good spell and was seen in & around town often.
Did you know Ed started out as a classically trained pianist?!?!?! Won many awards as a youth and switched to the wild side..drums...then him and Alex switched and history was made!!
@@michaelsuder3217 Not sure where your mind is but I fully comprehend my comments... With Kel's years of experience and mastery of the piano, she could be the next Stevie Vai on the electric guitar.
Kel might get a kick out of the fact that Eddie Van Halen was a classically trained pianist. Probably why you heard a lot of classical sounds come out in his playing.
Actually he had small guitar lessons from a Spanish trained guitarist, I cant remember who. He barely took any of the lessons seriously but that explains the flamenco part of his playing.
True true....he couldn't read music, he played by ear on piano...won some awards as a kid. Built his own guitar....started as his brother Alex on guitar and Eddie on drums. They switched....and the rest is face melting history.
I can never get enough of watching Eddie play his heart out and having fun.you guys really treated yourself on this one,,theres so many different kinds of music today which eddie van Halen has inspired to be the musicians they are today, E,V,H,,...had set the path for up coming musicians, if you like classical music mixed with modern day rock try listening to trans-Siberian- orchestra especially when they mixed Beethoven classical with modern metal,, that was awesome, .Anyway thanks for sharing loved it
The first time I ever heard the arpeggiating tap I thought for sure it was done on a synthesizer with a sequencer, sample and hold, or an arpeggiator. Eddie Van Halen is an original and that’s only part of what makes him among the best ever. 🎸

I saw them at the Hampton Coliseum in Virginia on this tour. I was 18 years old and my parents took me to the concert. My parents and I have seen Van Halen several times since then.
So awesome, Was hoping guys would play an Eddie solo to see the greatest guitarist of all time!, I love Dimebag, Angus, Kirk Hammett, and Jimi but Eddie has and always will be on another planet with what he can do on the geeeeeeeeetar. Cheers and rock ya later!
I saw an interview with Eddie back in the eighties where he said all he cared about was playing guitar. While his friends and all the other school kids would be at(and throwing)parties, he would find an empty room or bathroom and lock himself in it with his guitar, and practice while everyone else was partying. During the times he would be in the toilet, people would be pounding on the door trying to get in to take a leak.... Kind of shows is devotion to it, even back then. Not to mention it pretty much gives a hint as to how he got so great at playing....great story
Y'all are straight-up a fantastic kind of goofy with a positivity that lifts people in these odd times! You also remind me of my wife and I... she's classically trained, and I learned by ear. I love showing her new music I know she'll love! Keep up the good work! You're extremely entertaining!

Great start! Nothing like turning this up to 11 at stupid o'clock and waking up the whole street!!! They don't make 'em like that very often!!!!! Good video, good reaction!!!
I was at the Cow Palace a few days later, on November 2nd. My first real concert, and still my favorite. Ed wore black parachute pants for that show, and he was incredible. I started playing guitar soon after that concert.
I saw them live in concert and it was amazing💯 Eddie was a master at guitar, the whole band was perfect with Dave and long hair a&antics! I’ll never forget that🤘 Love Van Halen🔥
You ask how old i am. I'm 3 years younger than Eddie and I grew up with these guys in socal. Saw them play before they ever got a record contract or open for anyone and I was sold! I have mad respect for Jimmy and Stevie but you just watched the greatest Rock and Roll guitar player that's ever lived. RIP Eddie.
I was at this show in Hartford Connecticut. Seen him 3 times on this tour. San Diego, Los Angeles and Connecticut. The greatest guitarist of my generation, period!
Joe Ferrante, Augustin Ares & Rober Simmons -- YesYesYes! Steve Vai doing "For the Love of God" with the Holland Metropole Orchestra. Some amazing musician/Vai fan scored FTLOG for orchestra. Opening notes we Vai fans are familiar with are done by the oboist. The oboist! This version abso-tively and posi-lutely kills it.
Awesome reaction! I grew up on the "Live without a Net" home video and pretty much learned to play the guitar by watching that every day after school. Also i wear a Camouflage Van Halen jacket!! Keep ROCKIN!!!
I was at this concert August 27th 1986 New Haven Coliseum in New Haven Connecticut! This was so freaking amazing I was to the right of the stage amazing seats!! Eddie totally kicked ass!!
I could see it took a minute or 2 Kel but you really opened your mind to this. It was great to see that real reaction to this mastery. I hope that these reaction are really real, they seem so. I love you two so much. You have seen my other posts. I really enjoy watching you tow. It is such a love fest. great to watch.
"Just Between You and Me," "I like to Rock." And nothing's more rock than combining "Day Tripper" with "Satisfaction." "Say Hello" to Canada from this Texan.
I love your videos and reactions so much.... you guys bring a smile to my face every day....what a privilege to be taken along on Kel's journey of discovery....rock on, guys!
thanks for the reaction! Eddie is playing several different pieces from other albums wrapped into the eruption solo. it became his super solo, and regardless of whether he was on any self medicated influence, still one of the most bad ass solos and guitar players ever. Many others on their most sober day would have trouble just tuning his guitar. lol
When you look at the complete scope of things I really feel EVH is the greatest GUITAR GOD of all time. It takes more than great playing to be a superstar. How original are they. Before EVH who sounded like EVH.??? Who played like EVH.??? In 1978 Guitar player Magazine got an advanced copy of VH 1. They called everyone into THE LISTENING ROOM where they played Eruption over and over trying to figure out what was going on. Was it overdubs or a guitar running through a synth. This is Guitar Player magazine folks and they had no idea He made or modified his own equipment ,and countless people copied his ideas . In the early 80s one pickup guitars were the hot thing in rock because EVH had only one pickup in his homemade guitar. It only had one pickup because he didn't know how to wire in the second one. Big named guitar plyers were copying his mistakes. He is a unbelievable song writer and then there is his stage presence. well look at the video. Put all together I think he is the greatest
Well said. There's good. There's great. And there's the greatest. The greatest would know every inch of his tools or instrument, every sound it makes leaning against the wall, to being thrown through the air. The greatest would also know what that tool does and interacts with in everything and all around it, from its own cord receiving power, to its other tools in the bag. Eddie was a genius mostly because he wasn't afraid to try. It's trying the "good" and "greats" failed at. And a classical education didn't hurt. LoL
I saw this concert on t.v. back when I was like 6 and and by the age of 10 I got my parents to buy me a guitar. He was a big influence on so many guitarist including me. I remember practicing tapping when I was getting better because of him and Randy Road's I heard classical music before I ever heard classical music. It was like reversed from what Kel explained I heard the amplified version of classically influenced music then later got into classical music! I was like oh, this sounds like Megadeth in a way just a few more notes here and there lol! Anyway, great reaction as always!
I'm just glad you got to see this in your life , Ed transcended boundaries , by communicating with music , what we wish we could say with words. R.I.P. buddie.
Thanks for the vid; really enjoyed the reaction from you guys, really loved the banter and chemistry you have. This solo is a “mash-up” of a few solos Eddie Van Halen had already recorded and future recordings. The intro is called “316” which at the time was not recorded yet (he eventually dedicated to his son Wolfgang - the numbers are his date of birth. ) then he goes off and blows your mind with his “brown” sound and plays solos from the classic albums - “Eruption”, “Cathedral” intro to “Mean Street” and a lot of his signature sounds and solos he has played over the years. I was very fortunate that during this tour back in 86-87 I attended the San Diego date, had my mind blown at a young age from the master himself 🤘🏻
What a fabulous introduction by Sammy, alot of guys would be jealous, but Sammy was proud to be out there with Eddie! Eddie was having so much fun and I'm told he doesn't even remember this performance! A true master of his craft! Hey Rich wouldn't you love to have one of those picks he threw out there? This is my first time sitting in with you and Kel, thank you for allowing me to do that! If I can find you again I'd like to sit in again.
I got to see Van Halen at the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin in the late 70s, when they were still on tour for their first album. They were incredible. Eddie's performance of "Eruption" was a highlight. Sometimes he'd be playing and he'd just look around at us and smile as though he were thinking, "I know, I can't believe I'm this good, either!"
Eddie is like no other. When you've experienced Van Halen live it's more than the music it's so loud you can literally feel the sound waves going through your body. The Fair Warning tour in 81 I was deaf for 3 days. We love Eddie cause you could tell back in the day when we were young he loved the reaction we gave him! VAN HALEN FOREVER BABY!
October 12, 2020 checking in. Huge smile on my face for the first half of this reaction and tears in my eyes and deep sadness during the second half knowing we will never get to see Eddie Van Halen onstage ever again. Eddie always had a smile on his face while playing guitar. And that is good. RIP EVH
At this level of talent and ability watching Eddie play is like watching a thoroughbred run. Or watching the monster waves at Waikiki. You need to experience it to appreciate it fully.
I was born in 88. But I distinctly remember watching this on VHS in the early mid 90's with my dad. He's the one that turned me on to rock. And what better introduction could you ask for.
One of the best solos ever. In school band class I played guitar and the teacher used this solo as a teaching tool. Along with live without a net concert video from van Halen Grade 8
I was lucky enough to see the Van Halen first tour in America off the first album. They opened for Black Sabbath in Oakland California. Van Halen blew the doors off the arena ... never forget that show !
This was the solo from my first experience of live Van Halen.. That you reacted to this is awesome hehehe.. This made me want to pick up guitar (again), and I did
i was about 11 or 12 when i first eruption cause that is when i got into metal in general, watched it on tv using my xbox 360 full volume on the tv and i was amazed, 16 now, recently got a guitar and will learn every van halen song made as a thank you to EVH for inspiring me to get a guitar and play, EVH didn't die he ascended and he will live on forever, maybe one day in the future i'll see EVH in the heavens but for now i will look upon his legacy and continued to be amazed but for now Long Live EVH!!!!
I don't remember the first time I heard Eruption, but I saw Van Halen/ Hagar in '86 at the Lee County Civic center in Ft. Myers. I was a Sr. in high school soooooo 18 I guys. Best show I had seen at that time.

I love EVERYTHING on Kel , Rich, Bro you have one Sexy wife dude!
RIP Eddie.
I was 16 when i first heard Van Halen 1, although in 1987. I looked in the phone book the next day for guitar lessons.
i heard Van Halen for the first time when i was 13 which was 4 years ago. they were instantly my favorite band
i play drums though
I was at this show in Hartford Connecticut. Seen him 3 times on this tour. San Diego, Los Angeles and Connecticut. The greatest guitarist of my generation, period!
#Steve Vai. For the love of god live with orchestra
Yeah!!!
I've been a pain in the ask for that one for a while now. I hope they get to it as well! I know they will love it when they finally get to it!
Yes this is a good one. When he starts playing. Epic.
Glorious.
Awesome reaction! I grew up on the "Live without a Net" home video and pretty much learned to play the guitar by watching that every day after school. Also i wear a Camouflage Van Halen jacket!! Keep ROCKIN!!!
The King of Ten Fingers and Six Strings : Edward Van Halen
The king of pop guitar.
I truly enjoy watching you guys. You show how rock and metal makes a person come alive. Great stuff! Thank you! I grew up idolizing Edward VanHalen...
Eddie should be in PRISON! That guitar wasn’t 18!!
I was at this concert August 27th 1986 New Haven Coliseum in New Haven Connecticut! This was so freaking amazing I was to the right of the stage amazing seats!! Eddie totally kicked ass!!
This is the Very best You could of Done - Great
I could see it took a minute or 2 Kel but you really opened your mind to this. It was great to see that real reaction to this mastery. I hope that these reaction are really real, they seem so. I love you two so much. You have seen my other posts. I really enjoy watching you tow. It is such a love fest. great to watch.
Being Canadian, you might check out April Wine. roller...all over town 21st century schizoid man.
April Wine was the very first concert I saw. They opened for Kansas. I believe it was 1978!!! Awesome
"Just Between You and Me," "I like to Rock." And nothing's more rock than combining "Day Tripper" with "Satisfaction." "Say Hello" to Canada from this Texan.
21st century schizoid man! King Crimson, with the legendary Robert Fripp, who invented “FRIPPTRONICS”!
Other Canadian bands : Saga, Red Rider, Chilliwack, Spoons, etc
I love your videos and reactions so much.... you guys bring a smile to my face every day....what a privilege to be taken along on Kel's journey of discovery....rock on, guys!
Eddy is GOD
OMG I love your videos so much, I thought because youtube gltich that ur videos are gone forever, but you are HERE !
DIRE Straits - Private Investigations. - Kel needs to experience that piece of Knopfler genius. Then Maybe Brothers in arms as a bonus.
Seconded. Really anything by Dire Straits is choice.
thanks for the reaction! Eddie is playing several different pieces from other albums wrapped into the eruption solo. it became his super solo, and regardless of whether he was on any self medicated influence, still one of the most bad ass solos and guitar players ever. Many others on their most sober day would have trouble just tuning his guitar. lol
Edy quitar is called frankestaing
I just love you guys! Glad you're getting to this! THE BEST this puts it perfectly!
#EricJohnson - Cliffs of Dover (Live)
I know you two will love Erics sound and playing. Amazing guitarist!
Ooooo that's a good one !!!!
Yes
I am just mesmerized by the talent of Eddie. If only I could shred like that. Thanks for doing this reaction video!
The Best all time...
I'm just glad you got to see this in your life , Ed transcended boundaries , by communicating with music , what we wish we could say with words. R.I.P. buddie.
It does not in any way, shape or form, get better than this.
SRV
Rob Macmillan SRV great but different.
If I can find you again I'd like to sit in again.
love you guys . metalhead from northern sweden
Artist are always remembered after we are gone, for we leave a legacy behind. It will always be there. R I P Eddie the maestro
If only the world were filled with people just as wonderful as you.
Again...I love you guys!!!! Eddie is the master!!! Love from Brasil!
I was 16 years old in 1986 and watched Van Halen Live without a net with my older brother...sooo cool...:)
Along with live without a net concert video from van Halen
Grade 8
I was lucky enough to see the Van Halen first tour in America off the first album. They opened for Black Sabbath in Oakland California. Van Halen blew the doors off the arena ... never forget that show !
This was the solo from my first experience of live Van Halen.. That you reacted to this is awesome hehehe.. This made me want to pick up guitar (again), and I did
I was 24 when I saw this show at the Montréal Forum, this solo reminds me of how Eddie VH was one of the greatest guitarist of all time.
I was 28. I loved Van Halen ! Eddie was and is simply the best !
No one can touch him !!!! He built his own guitars. He is self taught. The bomb!
I was 2 years out of high school. I still have the albums from back then!
i was about 11 or 12 when i first eruption cause that is when i got into metal in general, watched it on tv using my xbox 360 full volume on the tv and i was amazed, 16 now, recently got a guitar and will learn every van halen song made as a thank you to EVH for inspiring me to get a guitar and play, EVH didn't die he ascended and he will live on forever, maybe one day in the future i'll see EVH in the heavens but for now i will look upon his legacy and continued to be amazed but for now Long Live EVH!!!!
I was 25 when I first saw Eddie perform this guitar solo, at this concert in 85...Blew me away, still does , Will always be My Guitar Hero 🎸 ♡♡♡
I don't remember the first time I heard Eruption, but I saw Van Halen/ Hagar in '86 at the Lee County Civic center in Ft. Myers. I was a Sr. in high school soooooo 18 I guys. Best show I had seen at that time.
I never get tired of watching this performance.
And that was just him out there goofing around on the guitar! AMAZING!
