This guy knows how to evaluate musicianship and make others to appreciate the music we love so much.
@@christophersmith2544 GOOD medicine!
Most definitely.
@@christophersmith2544 legal in some states.😂
This guy is the best. There are other guys who break down musicianship on UA-cam but Fil does it in a way that's very clear, easy to follow and interesting.
Yes, Jezuzfreek. You are totally correct. Would it not be great to see some upcomers spring from this channel to be the next greatest musicians! I know CCM REALLY needs true musicianship! :) Four chords and an acoustic guitar just cannot make it past three songs. Needs much more!
Eddie always looked so happy when he was playing.... heartwarming.
Indeed! A lot of people equate emotional playing to producing sad stuff that makes you cry. Thereby overlooking the fact that JOY is also an emotion.
EVH to me is a very emotional guitarist, because he is able to bring so much joy with his unique, instantly recognisable style of playing.
TravelingSolo that’s what I always thought about BB King, hell I heard him say it, I’ll do this until the day I die if I have to do it for free!
It's because he was loaded on booze and copious amounts of cocaine.
A guy I knew in high school ended up being the top radio DJ in Toronto and introduced a mutual friend of ours to Ed the night before the Buffalo Monsters Of Rock show: Many $$$ worth of cocaine in the room and Ed's nose!!!!
Lolz.
Brad zybola i just know that I was looking at a man who enjoyed what he was doing and he stated he loved it so much he’d do it for free although that didn’t stop him from depriving me of the pleasure of paying to watch and listen!
He’s wasted?
Your commentary made me tear up ...... I knew I was hearing the gods speak in ‘ 78 when I listened to Van Halen One. I was a teenage girl trying to survive a very dysfunctional family. Thank You Edward Van Halen for the soundtrack of my youth . Seeing you 3rd row in Detroit in 81’ is a memory I will cherish. 💜
Might of been at same show grew up in farm hills in the 80s
The cool thing about Van Halen was that they didn't sound like anyone else. They were unique and had their own sound.
Yea, that's a trait of all great bands!
Ans so many tried and failed to sound like them, there will only be one Van Halen!!
They reinvented rock.
He*
@@abhinav4771 "Van Halen" as in the band
No one had the guitar solo down as good as Eddie. He layed the tracks for a large majority of guitar players today. A true guitar god.
I thought you uploaded this the day after he passed until I checked the year. Who would've imagined he'd be gone almost exactly one year later?
Great description “ knife edge between perfection and chaos”😎
My brother saw him in 1979 in Seattle. He is a musician and was off to the side of the stage and just watched Eddies technique. He said Eddies fingers just hovered over the top of the strings and he had No Wasted motions to his playing. It blows us all away in 79, as it does today. Simply amazing player.
He was a Master ,not only played from his heart, but his soul ,he loved his trade and he put everything he had into playing,R.I.P Eddie you will be missed .
RIP EVH, you started an Eruption that'll go on forever!
Just knowing that someone your age still likes this is awesome. I was at this show in 1986, and had just graduated.
I love the way he puts a little grin on ur face in appreciation of his craft.
Nice Fil, your enthusiasm for Eddy is infectious.
Lol
Excellent analysis! I've seen him live 15 times since the 70s. He never disappointed. A unique musical genius. EDWARD! ☮️
Great analysis Fil! I saw them in 1979! I was 16 yrs old! ERUPTION is still in my head!!!🔥 🔥 🔥
Your knowledge and passion is contagious.
Fil... Don't let trolls and out of line comments get the best of you. you're well like, loved and respected by so many in and out of the music industry. have a Rockin' good time on your livestream Tuesday!
I won't! It's quite funny, I think they make comments and then actually Google me and then never return! 😂
EVH is my favorite guitarist of all time! He was also one of the first musicians to create amps the way he wanted them to sound as well as his guitars. He has always been hands on not just slapping his name on something. I’m fortunate to have friends in the music industry who know this from personal connections to him. I really enjoyed your analysis! It was spot on! Can’t wait for part 2! 🤘🏼♥️
SoCal RockerGal
Cool 😎
I think Tom Scholz was the actual first to do that with the amps. He was the guitarist who created the band Boston. Eddie changed rock guitar forever with his technique and sound 2 years later. The fact that he made his amazing Frankenstat (which I have a copy of) for less than $250 is just stunning! I priced the same types of parts because I was going to make one (before I bought one) and it came out even cheaper!
Any concert on youtube you think captures their best performance? Kind of like Ritz for GnR ... :) I haven't listened much to them and maybe it's time.. =)
@Sleepydog - Well, I would correct that with any of the 'professionally edited' concerts on UA-cam (and elsewhere) are a bit dodgy. The album 'Frampton Comes Alive' and the album 'KISS Alive!' were extremely monkeyed-with where things were re-recorded in the studio and the crowd volume was altered - and sometimes added where there was none. Believe me, I've seen Eddie mess up plenty of times live! There's actually a concert that was professionally shot on the Fair Warning tour on UA-cam. At the beginning of Unchained, Eddie comes in too early with the guitar part where Dave starts singing. So, he goes back to the intro with a grin on his face - knowing he screwed up. ;-)
What a mind blowing guitar solo!!Eddie Van Halen!! The KING of kings!!!
I LOVE your video and channel!! 👏👏👏👏♥️Congrats from Colombia!!!
Thanks!
I know nothing about guitar, but I could listen to you forever. You are so good at describing what is happening. Thanks.
Eddies fingers danced on the fret board like a ballerina dances on a stage. Everything is light to the touch and graceful. So sad to lose a legend like EVH. Rip Eddie 😢😢😢
The king of guitar innovation!! My first concert VH 7/24/81 I was mesmerized!!! Saw this tour as well!!
I saw him in the 90's with that other front man..not Diamond Dave or Sammy..oh I forgot his name..not important.
Mark Evrard ya poor Garry Cherone sang on the worst VH record! I’m a huge fan and was so disappointed when they put that out....
@@jazzcat8786 Thanks Jazzer..didn't think it was worth my time to Wikipedia it.
Fil, I appreciate your passion for guitarists and how much you honor them in your analysis. You do great research on all of your videos. Thank you.
absolutely the best analysis about this live without a net guitar solo ... you went in to deep details abut his tecnique that even who does not have knowledge can understand . well done 10000 ... you belong to one of the best youtubers , and as eddie you do your work with and for passion ... thanks a lot again ... keep on rocking from italy
When I was a young boy I visited an older friend's house one night and he put on this new album. It was Van Halen and when I heard Eddie and I was wondering what instrument he was playing. It was such a new, unique sound I didn't even know it was a guitar! You had to live in that era to understand how far ahead of his time EVH was. That night was the first time I realized I wanted to play guitar...
Love the commentaries on this channel 👍🏿
My favorite guitarist.
No one like him.
Mine too hands down
EVH=GOD
And Eddie's really not bad either!
Eddie Rules!
you r watching - No one like him, and thankfully no one is like the other great SRV (rip)
Oh yeah Eddie the Master, the innovator, the creative genius on the guitar. We all got influenced by Eddie that's for sure. One bridge pickup and Frankenstein rocks!!! Eddie could captivate his audience for hours. I love how he mixed things up. Never ever boring. Thanks for sharing Fil and a great analysis as always. You rock too, cheers!!!
To grasp the fact that Eddie had no internet, no UA-cam, very limited Tv and yet created these things is so underestimatedly mind blowing its ridiculous.
This video has just become THAT more relevant. RIP, Eddie. Heaven just got A LOT louder.
They should have screaming guitars at his funeral, nothing sad.
Well, heaven got pretty loud when Jimi showed up. And now, Jimi and Eddie are up there arguing about the best gauge of strings and which tubes sound best in a Marshall.
So many have come forth and said how kind Eddie was, funny too. RIP to this amazing innovator, inventor, dad, brother, son.
This is a fantastic review sir. You really did an amazing job here. God, I'm so heartbroken by the loss.
Eddie Van Halen, is by far, one of the best guitarists in history, i also dug the way he put his cigarette, in the head stock, just like another late great guitarist, i used to know, lol! Filip, you are such a great teacher, and you break down, each Artist with Expertise, i always feel like i'm in your class room almost every night! The nick name 'Professor Fil', suits you, because that's what you are a professor of the Arts.... You Rock! \M/
When I need a break from everything I just find Ed and he takes me to a special place.
Excellent analysis of the greatest guitarist of all time.......
I know this video is three years old but watching Eddie is great but I’m also watching Fil smiling as he’s watching..adorable
Man back then, Eddie's unique playing, Dave's unique vocals...
ROCK N ROLL MAGIC!!
Awesome break down Fil 🤟
I appreciate your observations on physiology and how players have to find what works best for them. I've found as I've grown older that I've also had to adjust for things like joint and tendon pain, and realized that you may have to change the way you've played for years and find different fingerings, chord voicings, etc. in order to play things in ways that are less painful or stressful to your fingers and hands.
Django after his accident
That is a wonderful observation mutt3155. It's just a reality, facts may be difficult to accept, but they are still facts. I screwed up hard, musically speaking, I let life get in the way since the only guitar I had was absolute trash. I'm still gonna surround myself with so much fairly high end stuff, just in case my fingers magically get it some day. I owe those fingers that much!
@@Damaged262 To bad that your fingers don't want to work anymore, although on the other hand my Dad is still rocking at 79, you can check out the video I made of him doing Walk Don't Run which he sent me last year.
Hi there...I hope you don't mind me replying to your message. I don't know what your problems are but I have been playing professionally for years and a year and a half ago I got a pain in my left hand which radiated to my elbow. I also lost some strength and flexibility. I tried everything and finally went to a good physiotherapist who told me I had problems with nerve getting trapped. I had acupuncture. She also gave me exercises - which I have to keep up - and it took about four months for things to improve. I am now back to playing properly but it was a long and worrying road. I guess I'm just trying to say, search out all avenues of treatment...good luck...
@@crimsontyger8576 thanks for the kind reply! You've inspired me to try some different avenues. I appreciate the info and knowing you've found some relief to your pain issues. Thanks!
FIL, THANK YOU FOR THE SPECTACULAR VIDEO , AND YOUR GREAT KNOWLEDGE ON THE COMMENTS AS USUAL, YOU ARE A WALKING ENCYCLOPEDIA, EDDIE SET THE WAY FOR MANY BANDS TO COME LATER, HE HAD A NEW VISION, THAT IS WHAT MUSIC NEEDS TODAY, LIKE HERE, ROCK ON , COUSIN FIGEL
Another great analysis video, thanks Fil! Rock 🤘
You analysed a legend yesterday and then just followed it up with another legend. I know a lot of people will reference Randy Rhoads but of all these type of 80s rock guitarists, Eddie is the most influential and the best IMO. He is just so badass and unique.
Rip king eddie...man what a bummer...we are all in mourning today...
Nice one Fil. WINGS OF PEGASUS, BABY!!!! RIP KING EDWARD🤘😎👍🎸👑🔥
Your comments are spot on Fil....you know music...you know guitar...appreciate you man
Thanks!
Good Times!😊❤️ He is amazing!
Seeing your smile makes me enjoy it even more! You really love music.
Great analysis on Eddie Fil!! Such talent! Both of you!💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝
I miss him so much already 😢🙏
Brother, you did a great job describing this solo. Well done! Cheers!
Fill, your ability to dive into a classic solo that I've heard 100's of times and bring out facts and interesting information is to make it sound like it was the first time I heard it is unparalleled. No matter how long your videos are, they seem short because of how interesting you make them. Thank you!
Excellent as always, Fil. Always wondered what lessons Eddie wanted from Glen Campbell, in that famous Alice Cooper story. I suspect it was to master the no-blur 12 string, but just a guess. Can watch Eddie play all day long. You are really on a roll, my friend! Thanks!
I won VH1 on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights, NJ in 78 on 8 track. Popped it in my portable player and was absolutely amazed at what I was hearing as were the people that stopped to listen. Made me a fan for life.
i really like how you talk too the viewer instead telling people how much you know an how dumb we are.
humility is a sign of a great artist.
You've out done yourself Fil great wisdom in this analyses, Jeff in LA USA
Such devastating news today on the death of Eddie. He was a guitar master. I saw him back in 1982. Just amazing. RIP Eddie🙏💔 Heartbreaking 🎸😢
Thank you Fil! thank you for your spot-on analysis and hints into the how it's done and thank you for doing a spotlight on one of my favorites and a guitar innovator who's name will go on forever! You Rock!
This was the best analysis of EVH I’ve ever heard
This video was originally posted 3 years ago. This analysis could have just as easily been done in the ‘70s or in 2023. Eddie Van Halen was just a master and monster on that guitar. EVH is timeless and in a class all to himself. Thank you for this wonderful analysis and breaking it down for those of us who just love and know a one-of-a-kind, soaring, entertaining guitar 🎸 player and sound.
Eddie had 3 strengths ..amazing lead compositions. Amazing rhythm compositions and his physical stage presence
Thank you, Fil, for another great analysis video. Van Halen is my absolute favorite. 💜💜
Fil I'm soooo glad you analyzed this classic Eddie Van Halen extended solo. A lot of others on UA-cam have done the same. But across the board -- they were just expressing their amazement and enthusiasm for his style on stage. But I knew you'd really have the knowledge to explain what was happening during each segment that he played.
I'm not a guitarist, and the last thing I want to hear is some yahoo onstage shredding away to his (or her) own delight but nobody else is delighted beyond a minute or two. EVH is about the only real professional rock guitarist who can hold my interest (and those of 10,000 others in concert) throughout. Thanks for this epic video!!!!
As a beginner at the guitar I have looked at numerous beginning guitar courses, numerous. I was so happy to have you point out and talk about adjusting form or as you said adapt your technique to fit what your are trying to play. THANK YOU!!! I have wondered this since I started and you are the first to confirm the need to adjust instead of getting frustrated.
Rest in peace Eddie😢Very big loss. The world is no longer the same anymore...
Massively enjoyed this one! Love the cliff-hanger!
I’m not a guitar player but I still learn a lot from you, Fil! Thanks!
This is why I love getting the UK insight. Here in the states, we may never have thought of saying "Eddie's Imagination with the guitar".... but that is the perfect way of explaining it. I like your channel. I'm going to subscribe. As a guitarist in a local band, I love hearing about other people's (guitarists) experiences and thought processes. Plus, I have this thing about the British dialect that seems to bring to light a clearer thought process to me because I'm really bad at expressing things with words. Maybe I just wasn't born very bright. lol...
Thanks!
When I was a teenager. Aerosmith was going to play at our county fair. At that time, Joe Perry wasn’t with them. He was doing the Joe Perry Project. A garage band was opening for them. They were called Van Halen! They ROCKED!! They made HISTORY that night!! Aerosmith sucked pretty bad. Steven Tyler was so drunk/high, he could remember the lyrics to his songs. He fell a couple times. It was sad. Everyone was screaming for Van Halen to come back on stage!
This is a gem of a story -- what a memory! Who would have thought the level of musical history on that county fair stage!
Let the music do the talking...Owned the Joe Perry Project...not half bad...loved VH & VH 2
I was a junior in high school that album came out and changed music forever
Torough and thick analysis of why Eruption and other works are so great. Well said. Thanks for the video!
RIP Ed. VH was in my wheelhouse since I was 10. He was a heavy influence on my taking up guitar. Hit me hard to hear of his passing.
I was just starting High School on Van Halen came out and I can tell you every single guitar player I knew was dying to see him play so they could learn how to do what it was he was doing it was mind-boggling amazing guitarist we're just flabbergasted
Eddie would turn his back to the crowd in the early days as to not give away certain tricks. Given how unique his sounds were at the time, can't blame him..
JoJo C i had the pleasure of seeing Van Halen and journey in ruby diamond auditorium in Tallahassee along about 77 or 78, it was the last of their small auditorium show’s! My friend Danny and I got back behind the amps at one point so we could drink some whiskey and missed a free for all! Miss you Danny RIP
I was in 11th grade when their debut album came out. As soon as I heard Running With the Devil I had to have the album. Purchased it along with Aja by Steely Dan and Worlds Away by Pablo Cruise. Still love all three!
@William Harvey I've been a fan since the early 80's, read, listened, and watched many interviews..
@William Harvey I learned a lot of tricks by watching.. I'm an amateur by comparison, but have learnt cool riffs and sound by watching both in front row and videos of concerts.
If I remember correctly, it was something Eddie did prior to his fame, and was done at small venues... which totally makes sense..
I don't play guitar, I never will play guitar, have no idea how I got here but do appreciate this insightful analysis of EVH!
In the wake of his passing I am even THAT much more grateful to have seen this legend on the "1984" Tour. RIP Eddie. Total Legend
Eddie is one guitariest I would never get bored watching him play being so talented and I'm looking forward to part 2 on Wednesday.
Eddie was a beast! No one compares. RIP
Fil, you have the best reaction and instruction channel on UA-cam.
Thanks!
Thank you, man. Your deep understanding and appreciation is obvious. Not to mention that videos like this are enabling us all to grieve and express our love for Eddie by giving our thoughts a voice. RIP EVH.
Hands down his best ver of eruption. Had the vhs of this a couple years after it came out. Still wondering how he does some of the wailing sounds... Eddie is a master...
Wow.... I'm surprised it took you this long to get around to this gem 🎸 Being a guitar player I'm sure you get 100+ requests or more a day for this ! Thank you for posting this.... I've watched it 1000 times so I'm more interested in hearing what you have to say about it....... thanx again Fil 😎🎸
Request: Rick Derringer Edgar Winter Frankenstein..... thought this might make a good video treat for Halloween 🎃 at the end of the month... So I'm getting my request in early 😉
definitely a badass clip of Eddie....can't critique a master....awesome....loved it Fil.....
R🎸I🎸P 🎭
EDDIE VAN HALEN 🥺 I grew up listening to you guys since day one. My generation is dying out slowly but surely. GOD BLESS.. 😊♥️
Eddie did not have tutorials on UA-cam, in the Seventies. That makes Eddie even more impressive because he had to teach himself. And being self-taught contributes to his uniqueness, since no teacher was there to impose a certain style. So, in the absence of formal instruction; Eddie contrived his own style.
I agree with your point about posture. A player can strain (sprain) muscles in their little finger and cause their wrist to hurt, if they push themselves beyond what their body allows them to do.
Anybody who has been classically trained has had it beaten into their heads, not to anchor their little finger on the soundboard. So, like yourself; I always notice whether a player is doing that, too.
When you said he sounded like an alien that made me think of that part in Back To The Future when he uses his walkman to scare the shit out his dad waking him up playing Eruption playing Eruption threw the headphones dressed as darth Vader in a radiation suit 🤘
"I'm Darth Vader from the planet Vulcan!"
The fact that you are wearing a Back to the Future shirt is awesome
Yes!
It wasn't eruption... Eddie recorded that for a film soundtrack called the wild life
@@benjaminwoodrowmusic6070 thanks for the correction . I just checked it out it's called Out The Window by EVH.
I love this channel so much. Cheers mate
I just saw another reactor do this video and just HAD to leave it a few minutes in to see your take on it Fil, and to hear your analysis of his technique! Eddie is BRILLIANT!
Thanks!
I had the privilege of watching Eddie set up a guitar himself and just his knowledge of a guitar is incredible!! The guy will never get his due as far as how a guitar should be set up and built! Complete genius!!! Eddie himself told Floyd Rose how to build a tremolo bar with fine tuners that would be better than a tremolo bar from Fender!!
princejeff I guess you’re conveniently dismissing his EVH brand and the millions who have purchased his guitars. UA-cam has a few interviews with him explaining how his guitars are built. C’mon, man.
@@Taylor-hu2no The EVH stuff is great!!
Brilliant observations!
The year I graduated high school!! Miss all the music from those days!! So glad you appreciate the classics 😁👍
❤ I greatly appreciate that you can comprehend the time era of what this sounded like when we first heard his Creative sounds.
The channel is growing!!
I love it.
Always love Eddie he was the original, an innovator...inspires the whole generation of new age guitarists.
I am not a guitar player but I have always loved the guitar. The explanations and commentary you give so enhance my listening experience. You allow me to bring a little more understanding into what would otherwise be just a wow moment...not I guess that there's anything wrong with that. Thanks.
Wonderful analysis
Again love ur analysis but also just watched your cover for Eruption and it was great and I really enjoyed it!!!
Thanks!
EVH is the man.🔥🎸🤟
loving your breakdown of EVH
Overall, in general, the most basic thing that can be said about Eddie is that he enjoyed what he was doing & he definitely put the work in on something he loved to do. Just by watching his gestures & facial expressions it's like he's saying, "I've taken the time. I've put in the work. I know what I'm capable of doing. This is the time I show you what that is."
Every time I hear Eddie playing it doesn't matter if I can watch him play or if I'm only listening to a recording...There's always *some* kind of sound he makes that leaves me asking, "How the hell did he do that?" It's like you said, Eddie creates a lot of those "blink & you miss it moments."
Now that’s a whole lot of technique going on right there.
MANY a Technique I'd say. 😝
What sets him apart here, as in almost all of his soloing, is his composition. Sure, he has almost inconceivable technique and facility, but that stuff bores quickly. He’s always composing in his solos, dreaming up a theme, a direction forward that is truly and uniquely his. He’s that special exception, a lesson to all the lesser shredders that speed and technique alone will last you just a few seconds, if that, before nobody cares anymore.
R.I.P. Eddie. Thank you for your amazing musical talents and contributions.
Thank you for your analysis. I had no idea that EVH combined different compositions. You really take the time to go into detail in explaining things.
