Thank you so very much for this wonderful video, I love yellow meated watermelon, it's my favorite..
I love how you demonstrated what to look for when buying a melon, and how to cut them up. I grew up in the country and we had plenty of watermelons when living with our grandparents.
Thank you very much for your explanation. This was clear and demonstrative. regards!!!
You can also tell if a watermelon is ready to eat by cutting it first and taking a bite or 2. It it's not sweet, cut another. If grocer asks you what you're doing, tell him to get lost. And, best way to cut the melon is like peeling an apple - cut all the green rind away and leave nothing but the red, then cut pieces whatever way you want. As far as looking at the bottom of the melon or tapping on the melon, that's a crock of sheit. That don't work. Also, buy SEEDED melons if you can. It's no fun trying to spit out seeds that ain't there.
Well done! I love that you just get down to the point! Thank you!
very informative James, thanks for the tips!
Ybarra, just wanted to thank you so much on this amazing video, I followed your advice today and finally picked a perfect juicy and crunchy watermelon. Thank you again so much and I love you for life for this bro. Appreciate your very helpful video.

Prepare the soil with compost sheep, cow or chicken manure and kitchen vegetable waste (no meats). Plant seeds 3 inch deep and (spaced) a meter apart in a well drained area where water can drain away. Or make rows of such soil so that any excess water can drain into the ruts. If roots need water, they can grow reaching the ruts and drink water.
Plant the seeds before Spring, as they take a while to germinate and sprout out the ground by mid Spring.
As the days get warmer, water the surface often and let it pergolate in the compost. Make some effort and control weeds if they persistently keep appearing because they love water too. Watermelons love to trail in wide spaces as the plant grown and then bloom with large flowers.
The flowers are male and female and self pollinate, the male flowers appear first, while the female appear about a week later to be pollinated. However, if there are many watermelon plants and bees all the plants will be pollinated for next year crop.
After pollination, the male flowers will continue to appear, then wilt and die within two weeks.
If you like to eat watermelon flowers, eat the males after pollination and before they wilt. Stew, boil or fry them in egg frittata. Chop the flower, crack some eggs, swirl them in a bowl mixed with flowers, spinach and a handful of green peas. Add some oil in a fry pan and fry for 20 minutes until it turns in a nice smelling golden frittata/omelette. Serve warm or cold with salad.
Wherever the watermelon plants go with their tips and tentrils, let them be, for they are the way they are and cutting them short will produce less fruits.
They will keep pollinating and fruiting for around a month, then the plant wilts and dies. But you have new seeds for next year.
In a natural sense (in a wild state) a watermelon does exactly the same lifecycle, but when it dies and fruits are still attached to the plant, they dry up and the seeds will remain on the ground. Some are eaten by animals but the fruits have hundred of seeds. Some are carried away, others find their way back into the ground, ready for next year crop.
Watermelons are a pleasure to eat in Summer, especially if they're cold. You can put them in the fridge or you put an uncut one into a cold river/stream for an hour and enjoy it cold. Cheers.
Great video. Glad you mentioned washing first.
Thank you, I like the idea of thick pieces!
Much appreciated,explanation on point.
Very sad that
your wonderful
videos have
stopped.
Thank you, covered everything I wanted to know
If you put a wet paper towel under your cutting board, it will prevent it from moving.
James just discovery your channel LOVE the watermelon video
Very interesting video. I love watermelon a lot. How long does it take to plant and harvest it?
Thanks.
excellent demo on the watermelon- Thank you
Very informative video, thank you.
You should put a dish towel underneath chopping board .That way board stays in place .
Thank you for teaching us how to
pick a watermelon 🍉
I like how you teaching, a lot of good information thank you
Great Video! Thank you.
Great video. Thanks for making it!!!
Its shiny and not ripe yet.
You want a deep thud not a high thud.
That is why your watermelon is so light red instead of dark red.
This guy has no clue. look at the color of that melon, lol.
Haha so not ripe.. for his variety of watermelon it should be
a darker pink.
Thank U: that's what I discovered: true red is sweet not pink. Who knew about high gloss??!! Is season over? Hope U reply wh e its Sept THANX AGAI
loved your presentation of watermelon! well done :)
Love this channel
Ever since I got so sick eating a melon, I started washing it before I cut into it.
Yes, and notice how he never mentioned that it should be washed because of pesticides? ☠️ He made it sound like it's all about the dirt. 😐
Ii thought light pink color meant flat flavor. Have to buy cut ones: can't carry larger ones. Advice for buying cut melons?
that watermelon doesn't look very red inside : - (
The white part is the best part
I'm from Philippines and I've learned a lot here! I am guilty! We don't wash our watermelons:( Now, I know! Thank you!
Lots of great information. Thanks.
Especially liked the tip about storing the melon at room temp. Thanks. Once a month I fast by eating only watermelon for one week. (When melons are in season)
I have a tip for you to keep your cutting board from sliding away from you while cutting or carving: place a round disc gripper pad or any flat piece of rubber under the cutting board to hold it in place.
Just screw the cutting board to the table
That was excellent. Thank you!
Thanks for the good tips.
Pretty light color to that! Doesn’t look very ripe to me. There are differences on how to select one though.
it does not look to ripe, it has a pink color instead of red. sometime our method is deceiving. I get mine by the yellow one the hollow sound. I have to pick one for my daughter to. I get a good one most of the time
Excellent video
thank you for the helpful tips, Love fruit yet not hugely knowledge.able on how to pick them!
What do u do with all that excess u trimmed off? HELP the birds and wildlife?
great job
Thanks James great video.
An uncut melon is good for 7-10 days? I just watched Perry And Son, and they say in a cool place with no direct sun, they last for 6 weeks. Which is true?
They may have already been off the vine for a bit before they get on the store shelves. Were the others farmers?
not very red, but I have had watermelon in the past that was not too red but is was sweet too. Sometimes I am not so lucky so in the trash it was goes... I will try to get better picking sweeter and ripped ones... even store cut up already too,,, thanks for sharing.. :)
I am grew watermelons in my zone 6 garden. It is hard to tell if the watermelon is ripe. But, I am going to make sure that I use your suggestions. Is the watermelon ripe? That is the question! Thanks for sharing.
Really great tips! So glad to have discovered your channel.
🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉mm mm❤❤❤
Superb...
Excellent Señor! Both the science and the presentation is perfect. Thank you for sharing. Your channel shows only 3 dating way back. Hope to hear from you soon.
Gila K ooo
Great, thanks !
.....Cant wait to demonstrate this at home. Yipee! Thanks James.
Good job James.
You did say if a watermelon is picked does it ripen
Really didn't look through all of the comments but a little suggestion you might want to get yourself a hand towel damping it and put it under your cutting board that way your cutting board don't slide everywhere
He should have put/ cut melon on counter top. That so called cutting board was nothing. Even on counter top, still need a wet cloth or paper towel.
Great thank u
Place a strainer in the bowl first then put the watermelon in the strainer so it doesnt sit in the juice.Keeps better that way in the frig.
*How to find a RIPE WATERMELON!*
This is an excellent video on how to pick a ripe watermelon.
It's very informative.
Red Bone y
I use the same methods for choosing a H2o-melon. I was taught in TX by a farmer.
Always wash your fruits and vegetables people working in the field usually don't take time to go to a restroom when they are being paid by the amount of food they pick. Also birds flying above go where ever they happen to be. Yes it's washed before market but not that good and some products are sprayed with pesticides or preservatives.
Great presentation and good tips! I like the idea of washing the melon and I didn’t know that refrigeration shortened its life. Thanks!
My mom used to ball cut watermelon making lil balls of watermelon as a watermelon decoration.
I noticed you didn’t remove the seeds? Were you simply using a seedless water melon? I did, however, see some seeds. Please help! Great demo!
Sorry, but that melon he picked and sliced open doesn't look very ripe to me. I get that light red color all the time -- and they're almost always tasteless. (Altho I do agree with most of his "choosing" methods.)
Was thinking the same thing. When I see that pink color my heart sinks :(
its usa
Yeah that's not ripe
You are right .... This is a Watermelon Nightmare , pink inside... should be juicy red
Try sprinkling a little salt on the slices, Mmm good.
A sprinkle of Sea salt and squeeze some lime juice on it. You will never eat it without again... absolutely delicious!
Do you give the excess you trimmed off to the Birds . Wrap take to the wooded area as a GIFTS. Instead of garbage can. They need lycopene food also. HELPS to Preserve our Friends. THEIR FoodS ARE NOT as plentiful as 20 yrs ago..🐧????Do U??
Thanks for this.....
Whatbif you buy a water melon and its all green no patch and its hard how do i ripe
Put something under that cutting board to keep it from moving!
I just love watermelon and cantaloupe y u cut off the white part aren't they good for us

Thanks for sharing your methods for picking ripe melons. I'll be looking for yellow spots myself from now on as well as darker skin.
Give me a big azz spoon and I'm good to go. 🍉
I'm 62 years old and I have never washed a watermelon you eat the inside not the outside and that is not rip at all
Kim Fyffe But you cut through the rind and I use to just rinse off strawberries but now they say there are more pesticides on them than ever. I use a mixture of white vinegar and cold water. I let my fruit soak for about 20 to 30 minutes and I am stunned how much dirt and bugs come off. I then rinse under cold running water and start preparing the fruit to eat. The experts do not recommend using soap on your fruit. Vinegar is natural and slightly acidic which helps kill germs and remove the bad stuff..
That melon is very light in color inside......also I see some white seeds..and that means it isn't ripe......
Man, that watermelon was so under-ripe!
I usually use the conditional and blow dry it, it came out very sweet
I dont use tower I use bath robe
I power wash then steam clean my melons before cutting them. I don't want any dirt to get in it.
That's going overboard. A good industrial soap and wire brush will work good enough.
why is it not a deeper red.
Where's the seeds?
Press with your thumb on the end. See how much give it has. A ripe melon will have a little give.
informative video..thank you!
This is seedless watermelon .How they collect seed from seedless watermelon ,is this GM watermelon please answer .
Oxidents are things that reduce or eliminate oxidation oxcides) or what most people are familiar with--RUST, destruction. Not the effect of oxigen which every living cell in humans needs to survive.
I am old enough to remember when watermelon was red.

Wow dude makes cutting a melon a project. Never washed a melon in my life. Im 66. But to each his own.
Please don't use toxic detergents on your food! Use distilled white vinegar to disinfect your fruit and vegetables.
That is not a ripe watermelon. It even had a stem on it and white seeds.
@ MrTellyBelly, Plus the flesh was a pinkish color, way to light to be sweet.Should be a darker red.
Yes please ,can I have a piece.
So where's the bathrobe and smoking pipe for your freshly bathed watermelon?
Is that melon sweet? Looks like NOT. Pale and dull. I thought the darker red it is, it is sweeter.
Everything I wanted to know!
Ed Esso no it’s not!!! Your a myth
How come your melon is seedless. How to find a seedless melon.
Watermelon is my favorite fruit!!!
Can you show how to pick a good cantaloupe???
Love my fruit,, also I can't seem to find good peaches

And next you sing it a lullabye and put it to bed.
IT SEEM'S IT'S NOT REAL NICE AND RED.WHEN I PICK ONE UP,AND TAP IT FOR SOUND,IT SHOUD BE A HIGH PITCHED SOUND,AND WHEN I HIT IT,I SHOULD FEEL IT IN MY OTHER HAND ON THE BOTTOM,WHERE IM HOLDING IT.AND A BIG WATERMELLON HAS MORE WATER,THEN A SMALLER ONE,SO YOU DONT NEED ALL THAT WATER FROM THE BIGGER ONE..GOOD VIDIO,TO WATCH ,AND I LIKE THE CUTTING YOU DID.AND THAT LITTLE CUT YOU DID FIRST SO YOU CAN STAND IT ON IT'S SIDE,''CLEAVER BUDDY..NICE VIDIO''..BRAVO☼AND THERE GOOD FOR PREVENTING ''COLIN CANCER''
The watermelon today are terrible! Back when I was little, there was no such thing as a "bad" watermelon, but now I'm lucky to get even one during the season, that has decent taste. They are now TRUE "water" melons and taste like WATER! I've become so disgusted when it comes to watermelon because they just are such a disappointment to purchase and end up with a huge piece of fruit not the least flavorful. This is because watermelons, along with most produce, is being grown on soil depleted of all natural minerals and nutrients, and you just can't expect to produce a quality product on man-made chemicals. I do all the things suggested to select the best melon possible, yet they are all a tasteless mass of watery mush, that ends up in the garbage. Thanks for all the tips you've given, but the real "tip" needs to be given to the growers who are sending such a no-taste product to market, and I'm sure they are very aware of the very low quality of their fruit. For Big Truth! kristi
Kristi Lindley: You are sooo correct! I have never had so many BAD watermelons in my life! I remember , as a child, when my dad would cut a watermelon!! You could SMELL it! The center, the heart, almost popped out! They were always RED. They had seeds! No worries! We worked it out!! I never knew that they would turn into mush!! I have had to throw away more money, because I could not eat a pile of mush!!! I stopped buying "off season.." AND where did they find a "personal watermelon?"
be sure and let that water run, it is free
Water is not free!
