I just discovered your channel and have already watched a number of "how to pick". I'm 70 years old and never knew most of these things. Next time I go to the store I won't be playing a guessing game.
Great video. I also watched your other videos instructing viewers how to pick a good pineapple and watermelon. I think it's good if you washed your melons at your sink before you cut them. Other people have also touched those melons at the grocery store before you touch it. So now, I wash all of my fruit if a knife will be going through it so the germs on the outside don't get on the flesh of the fruit on the inside. After I finish cutting my food, I wash the knife off again. 😊
WOW! I think I just saved hundreds of dollars by simply watching your videos on how to pick fruit! I wish someone had taught me these tips sooner. My kids love fruit, but I have a knack for not picking the best. Now we can start eating more fruit than we throw away! Please keep the videos coming.
Thank you for video on picking perfect fruits. FYI I grew up in southern Indiana and we have many melon farms. We call what you call Eastetn melons, Posey County Cantaloupes. We also say they look like white pumpkins cuz some have ridges like a pumpkin. (Unless these are a different kind) I’ve never been told Eastern but I just wanted you to know that I appreciate the “How to pick” lesson. Excited to pick next Posey County Cantaloupe. You are great, thank you.
I always save my seeds. The sweetest melons always get planted next year ! I have cantaloupe, honeydew, you, Sugar babies yellow meated melon, and two large seeded watermelon. I don’t grow seedless because they’re so difficult to germinate. By the looks of it I’m going to have a bumper crop of melons this year all of my vines are loaded I can’t wait !! My small melons will be ready near my d June to early July and the big melons will be ready probably mid July I am so excited I’m feeding them pretty heavy they’re gonna be some really big ones if the weather holds out and we don’t get over saturated with rain I’m gonna have some good Sweet treats !!
Just bought a cantaloupe this morning from a small farm on the outskirts of town. I also use the smell test. The checking the webbing is a new one for me. Thanks for the info.
Just found your channel from the “picking a watermelon” video. I am an instant sub. Just a simple and happy home cook grateful to learn how to pick the best produce. Whether I’m at a farmer’s market or grocery store. Thank you SO very much for teaching in such an easy way to learn and implement ❤❤❤
I enjoy your videos. They aren't long and drawn out like some. I want to add that 3 of our frisky felines can smell a cantelope the second I cut into it. I called my vet to ensure it was ok to feed them and he said it was fine but just don't give them a lot at once. They are actually good for them and helps supply their water needs
Regarding honeydew melons and cantaloupes, I would really recommend trying uzbek honeydew melons and cantaloupes. Their fragrance is smelled from a block away and my favorite is a torpedo honeydew melons which I haven’t seen either in europe or the states. When it comes to its sweetness, there is an uzbek saying to describe the level of its sweetness: “it is so sweet that it cuts your tongue.” :)
All great advice here! Exactly how we choose them here in Provence! 👍👏 Weigth and smell are indeed the +++ points in case you are not sure about the other ones: for instance, depending on the lighting in the shop, or if your colour sight is not that good, you may not be sure about the cantaloupes' real colour. Heavy and fragrant ftw! 😋😋😁
Thanks for the great teaching on how to choose the best sweet cantaloupe cantaloupe cantaloupe I was always wondering about this and now I know keep up the good work 👏 🙌 👍
Two things more things... - shake the cantaloupe to hear if the seeds are loose inside, a sign its ripe & ready. The second thing is to wash the melon well before cutting. (If you dont, the knife will drag outside contaminates inside to the edible fruit.) Just sayin’.
My wife in the other room was in middle of some work and listening on and off while Im watching this video - Those words Rubbing, sticking your finger, heavier the better, lift and feel them, little old and dried out - I had to repeat the video and show her what I was actually watching
I used to live outside Houston, TX. We always couldn’t wait for the second-third week of July for the Pecos cantaloupes. Nothing taste better like the Pecos! They sold the company about 7-8 years ago😢
U r so helpful…..however, my mother told me to wave my hands close to any fruit ..& if those tiny fruit flies fly off the the fruit, that’s the one to buy….but I now prefer your method. …thank you for the videos. Margy
I'm not sure where you are, but if you ever get the chance to buy a Pecos cantaloupe you'd be doing yourself the biggest favor lol!! They are grown in Pecos, TX
Good to know. I knew green wasn't good. The only thing else I knew was if I smelled the stem and couldn't smell it, it wouldn't have a good taste. Knowing the other information will help to assure they taste goid especially the heaviness. Thanks
Thank you great advice, I’ve bought a few lousy cantaloupes I now know what to look for. Fruit and vegetables in Australia have become very expensive, I recently paid $2.30 for one lemon 🍋from the supermarket, I won’t be doing that again, lemons aren’t normally that expensive, stone fruit in season, has been very expensive, as are veggies. The correct way to store veggies and fruit could make an excellent video. 😉
Watching this was torturous ! Not being able to eat ! Those looked so good ! Might be bad for me now, but we grew up sprinkling Salt on them ! Same with Watermelon ! 👍😉
In my local big chain super duper grocery store, I started to use your techniques, touching, rubbing, smelling, feeling the weight, people looked at me strangely and even a lady suggested me to get a room with the damn melon. So I brought her, the melon, home and enjoyed myself. 🤣
I won't even buy supermarket cantaloupe. They're picked green, shipped across the country at very cold temperatures ( I'm on the East coast) and have absolutely NO smell to them. I'm happy to wait until the local melons come into the area farmers markets. Same goes for strawberry's.🍓
There's nothing wrong with genetically modifying food to withstand drought or insects. All fruits & vegetables have been hybridized from the originally oranges used to be bitter, watermelon originally had a smaller sweet area, thick rinds & both had seeds.
My farmers market near me hasnt had good watermelon or canteloupes lately compared to the ones Ive been buying at Publix. I dont know what it is but Ive had better luck with Publix produce than the Detwilers farm market near me.
@@WalkwithGod4eternity I'm in upstate NY on Lake Erie. We don't have Publix stores here. The two big chains are Tops and Wegmans. Tops has mediocre produce, Wegmans is very good but expensive. But we do have a really nice farmers market. Lots of vendors so the prices stay low due to competition. I haven't had a good piece of watermelon since the last time I was able to find the real deal complete with black seeds and that was years ago!!
Thank you for these because I’m 47 and I never quite knew what the tricks were. I’ve just been lucky all these years to find sweet ones. Can you do a video on honeydew please?
I would not have picked either melon. One was too green, and the other had the brown spots. Obviously, I have never been able to pick a good melon. LOL I had given up trying. Now I know what to do! THANK YOU!
A lot of grocery stores these days don't have canteloupes that smell anymore. Sad about how the farmers are forced to ship melons before they'd like to these days.
This is definitely the opportunity to put in a plug for your local farmers market. Where I live, most Farmer’s Markets are even able to accept food stamps and WIC. It’s a great way for the state to support local economy. Support local small businesses and get your produce fresh and ripe!
Choosing a ripe honeydew is difficult since they are green even when ripe. Considering how expensive melons are, I hesitate to buy any. My supermarket sometimes sells larger melon halves but I don't like the idea of buying something pre cut. No idea about sanitation.
If available, select a honeydew with yellow skin rather than a honeydew with green skin. It will be sweeter. Besides giving it a smell test, I also knock on it, just like selecting a watermelon. It should have a "hollow"sound.
The one(s) that you've picked looks delicious and perfect as opposed to the late ones that i've been picking. So, i'll try to be more careful and stop ending up drinking ferment. i actually was looking for fermented melon juice tips, haha!
@@FoodChainTV , indeed, i am tasting SCENTS of cantaloupe 😀 from this "mix" (not a bad "sodapop", but i prefer a top quality fruit over a "soda", any day).
I used to enjoy cantaloupe when I was a kid. We had it often. I will certainly use your tips in buying my next melon. I bought one last week and it did not seem soft enough and had a really bad after taste. I wonder if that means it was not ripe enough or something.
I can go to 5 different markets around me and never find a cantaloupe that have all 5 of the characteristics you describe. Even though California produces 90% of the U.S. cantaloupe, I'm pretty sure we also export every single one of the decent ones. Even worse when it comes to honeydew melon.
I always allow the melon to sit on my kitchen counter for a day or 2 before cutting it open. Anybody saving seeds, you'll need to wash every bit of the coating off, I mean every bit. Otherwise the seeds won't germinate. Then set the seeds on a paper towel, drying both sides thoroughly for a few days. When you're ready to plant them, place the seeds in a baggie of filtered water (chemical laced city water or bottled water can inhibit germination), for about a day. Then plant in pre-moist peat moss or coco coir. Once seedling appears and is a couple inches tall, transplant into soil.

Strawberry = GMO!!
When they refrigerate fruit, it ruins the taste. If you grow your own tomatoes please, do not put them in the fridge, it will ruin the taste.

good information.. I have not done the 'smell test'. I think I can get better.
Love how you sample everything! I'm jealous. 😅

Your channel is fantastic! I have learned so much!😊
Thanl you very much!
I eat cut up cantalope with ranch dressing and cinnamon. It is excellent
I want to run to the store to used this technique!!! Thank youuu
Thank you so much😇🙏🏼👍👌💯🌹I love cantaloupe 🍈
