- In this video I will show you the five things to look for when choosing a sweet, ripe and juicy Eastern Cantaloupe (muskmelon) at the grocery store. I will also show you how to cut and cube them.
The Eastern Cantaloupe is available early in summer from Florida to Pennsylvania and is slightly different than the more pretty, but less sweet, Western Melon which is available later on in the summer. This video will help you pick an Eastern Cantaloupe.
The five things you have to look for in choosing a cantaloupe are:
1. Color
2. Texture
3. Indentation
4. Weight
5. Smell/Aroma
Here are some good cantaloupe cutting knives:

My wife in the other room was in middle of some work and listening on and off while Im watching this video - Those words Rubbing, sticking your finger, heavier the better, lift and feel them, little old and dried out - I had to repeat the video and show her what I was actually watching
I could hear the juice as you were crunching on the first one. You made my mouth water 😂
Yes, very juicy! lol

Two things more things...
- shake the cantaloupe to hear if the seeds are loose inside, a sign its ripe & ready.
The second thing is to wash the melon well before cutting. (If you dont, the knife will drag outside contaminates inside to the edible fruit.) Just sayin’.
Good tip. Thanks!
WOW! I think I just saved hundreds of dollars by simply watching your videos on how to pick fruit! I wish someone had taught me these tips sooner. My kids love fruit, but I have a knack for not picking the best. Now we can start eating more fruit than we throw away! Please keep the videos coming.
Thanks for watching!
Just found your channel from the “picking a watermelon” video. I am an instant sub. Just a simple and happy home cook grateful to learn how to pick the best produce. Whether I’m at a farmer’s market or grocery store. Thank you SO very much for teaching in such an easy way to learn and implement ❤❤❤
Thank you!
Same here I just found his channel , it makes me angry when I can't find the right fruit but now thanks to this channel I can now .😊 👍
I just watched the watermelon video too. I am now subscribed and hooked.
Thanks for the enlightenment.....😇👍
I knew all five but did not realize I did. Guess I have used the most important to me snell and soft stem area. Thanks!
You are a great teacher ☺️
Thanks for sharing your expertise, much appreciated. From Australia
Good info for buying the right kind.
Pecos cantaloupe is by far my favorite.
Another nice demo!
OMG Thank you for the tips. I knew 2 of them😊
Love how you sample everything! I'm jealous. 😅
I lived on the east coast all of my life until 5 years ago. Now in AZ. I have always had the eastern fruit.
I want to run to the store to used this technique!!! Thank youuu
Another video winner! You're making me hungry! Thank you!
Wow I like to listen to you a lot all good stuff Thank❤❤❤
I am armed for watermelon and now cantaloupe training. Happy trails.
Thanks for the information
Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for watching!
You are so awesome Thank You. Now I I'm going to get my feel on 😛
I used to live outside Houston, TX. We always couldn’t wait for the second-third week of July for the Pecos cantaloupes. Nothing taste better like the Pecos! They sold the company about 7-8 years ago😢
Regarding honeydew melons and cantaloupes, I would really recommend trying uzbek honeydew melons and cantaloupes. Their fragrance is smelled from a block away and my favorite is a torpedo honeydew melons which I haven’t seen either in europe or the states. When it comes to its sweetness, there is an uzbek saying to describe the level of its sweetness: “it is so sweet that it cuts your tongue.” :)
Honeydew melons should be against the law for tasting so good and sweet!
Birds also love the seeds
Thanks a lot!
Looks nice and succulent. Mmmmmmm.
I won't even buy supermarket cantaloupe. They're picked green, shipped across the country at very cold temperatures ( I'm on the East coast) and have absolutely NO smell to them. I'm happy to wait until the local melons come into the area farmers markets. Same goes for strawberry's.🍓
Strawberry = GMO!!
Thanks for the tip
Thanks for watching!
Great vid! Thank you 🙌!
Thanks for watching!
🍈I am learning how to find the perfect melon!🎉
Thanks. ✌🏻👊🏼
In my local big chain super duper grocery store, I started to use your techniques, touching, rubbing, smelling, feeling the weight, people looked at me strangely and even a lady suggested me to get a room with the damn
melon. So I brought her, the melon, home and enjoyed myself. 🤣
You're funny!
I would not have picked either melon. One was too green, and the other had the brown spots. Obviously, I have never been able to pick a good melon. LOL I had given up trying. Now I know what to do! THANK YOU!
The one on the left only looks green because the color saturation of the camera I used is high. It didn't look green to the eye FYI.
I shake them, and if you can hear the seeds and juices jostling around it's good.
I'm not sure where you are, but if you ever get the chance to buy a Pecos cantaloupe you'd be doing yourself the biggest favor lol!! They are grown in Pecos, TX
Good 👍
Thank you for these because I’m 47 and I never quite knew what the tricks were. I’ve just been lucky all these years to find sweet ones.
Can you do a video on honeydew please?
U took the words right out of my mouth😅❤tks
The one(s) that you've picked looks delicious and perfect as opposed to the late ones that i've been picking. So, i'll try to be more careful and stop ending up drinking ferment. i actually was looking for fermented melon juice tips, haha!
Well you can make booze out of pretty much anything that has sugar and carbs... But it may not taste very good!
@@FoodChainTV , indeed, i am tasting SCENTS of cantaloupe 😀 from this "mix" (not a bad "sodapop", but i prefer a top quality fruit over a "soda", any day).
A lot of grocery stores these days don't have canteloupes that smell anymore. Sad about how the farmers are forced to ship melons before they'd like to these days.

This is definitely the opportunity to put in a plug for your local farmers market. Where I live, most Farmer’s Markets are even able to accept food stamps and WIC. It’s a great way for the state to support local economy. Support local small businesses and get your produce fresh and ripe!
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up I also subscribed to your channel
Thank you!
I put the scooped seeds into a strainer and save the juice to put in the cubed fruit or a smoothie
Ty
Can you show us how to choose honey due? It is same as cantloupe, but whit green color.
I thank God, for your expertice! Bless you, I am so looking forward to my next, artfully chosen mellon.😅😅😅
Too bad there is US sanctions, but Persian melons are the Rolls-Royce of Melons. You haven't had a Mellon until you tried a Persian Mellon (Specifically from the city of Mashad). The aroma, texture and sweetness is in the class by itself.
Honestly, 99% of Americans don’t understand the relationship between US sanctions and Persian melons unless they have Iranian friends. Maybe if you say Iranian melons they will understand what you mean.
Ya U can even use the same method to choose a honey dew 😊😊😊.
Tuscan cantaloupes are good, too.
Thank you much Mr!!!! 😉 👍 👌 👏👏👏👏👏
I would assume we follow the same steps here in Australia for the cantaloupe ( we call them rock mellon)
How do you plant cherry seeds?? Please
I'm from Colorado what should I be looking for
My store usually has cantaloupes that aren’t ripe. Is it possible to ripen them at home?
I know how to pick a ripe cantaloupe. The problem is finding one in a supermarket since they are usually sold too green.
How do you fix the seeds to plant?? I know dry them but thats it? After cleaning.
Clean them, and put them on paper towel to dry for like a day. I don't think they have to be all the way dry. Last time I grew melon from seeds, I used the seeds within 24 hours of eating a melon and they sprouted and grew into a plant. Melon seeds are not picky.
"Just keep on rubbing your melons"🤣😂🤣
Confused I thought you said no green, the one was green at least it looked like it on the screen, if u could clarify thanks it also had a green stem
I used to enjoy cantaloupe when I was a kid. We had it often. I will certainly use your tips in buying my next melon. I bought one last week and it did not seem soft enough and had a really bad after taste. I wonder if that means it was not ripe enough or something.
Yep, not ripe enough. In France it would be used in a salad, it works really well with a feta type cheese.
Choosing a ripe honeydew is difficult since they are green even when ripe. Considering how expensive melons are, I hesitate to buy any. My supermarket sometimes sells larger melon halves but I don't like the idea of buying something pre cut. No idea about sanitation.
If available, select a honeydew with yellow skin rather than a honeydew with green skin. It will be sweeter. Besides giving it a smell test, I also knock on it, just like selecting a watermelon. It should have a "hollow"sound.
Do you have to cut it from the stem end to the belly button end.?
Sweet smelling … etc. and once opened… the meaty portion of the
cantaloipe is golden yellow
Did you wash these fruits?
When is the best time to buy these cantaloupe
Cantaloupe is 92% water. No drink needed. Healthy for dogs as well. Best fruit .
I was at aldys and saw some cantaloupes and when I picked up one that looked really good to me I found that it was really cold like it had been shipped frozen. Never mind, not for me 😢
I know what your talking about same here , I was very disappointed and dissatisfied with the produce at the store , and it's a store you would think the produce wouldn't be of low quality , well some idiot put the produce in the freezer at the store and just ruined the stores entire inventory of fresh melons . I hate having to ask for a refund however I bought six melons and 2 were Honey dew those were fabulous and perfect condition however and the orange dew was equally as wonderful as the honey dew however the two water melon and cantaloupe we're not up to par , it was rotten from the inside. Like I said I hate having to ask for a refund however this produce was not cheap and it's embarrassing to have to go back and ask if it's possible they can refund or replace the product .
I had a cat that would climb the walls for cantaloupe. He would treat it like a lollipop. I miss my little buddy.
Next, show us how to buy a plum?
Stem? What happened to bellybutton? Lol great vids brother!
I’m surprised the greener cantaloupe was sweet. The seeds looked drier which to me means not ripe. Thanks for sharing
The color on that camera was bumped up.. so to the eye, it didn't look that green.
@@FoodChainTV😢
how can u tell if the melon is overripe?
How are cantaloupe pieces stored?
In a container with a lid or tight plastic wrap. Or, in a ziploc bag. And then keep in the fridge.
What do you do if your melons don't have the netting?
It's unlikely that you will find a cantaloupe that doesn't have netting. There are other melons that may look similar, that don't have netting.
I've always thought the best way to buy a sweet and juicy melon is to cut a little bit first and eat it. If you like it, buy it, otherwise open another.
Be sure to wash your fruit before you cut into it or eat it!
yes. I always do. You never know what sprays or "fertilizers" the farmer may use. The knife can introduce that stuff into the melon when cutting it open.
One looks very green, surprised
That's just the color saturation of my camera. It didn't look green by eye.
The way you choose a ripe melon is to buy one that's grown here in the USA and not mexico, central or south america that's how you choose the best ones.
The second Melon was somewhat green. Step #1 no green?
It wasn't green to the eye. I turned up the color saturation in post-production to make the image brighter, and that's why it looks green.
@@FoodChainTV , it looks perfectly fine, even so.
So basically…
The riper it is.. there probable brown spots, more aromatic,
Softer and sweeter
Juice.
Less ripe.. less sugar,
Probably more fiber,
Less soft
Any fruit that you buy has to smell if it's ripe. Peaches pears plumbs apricots bananas apples watermelons cantaloupes etc. all fruits.
IF NOT RIPE, WILL IT RIPEN AT HOME.. RUFFLY HOW LONG?
Yes, a cantaloupe will ripen after it's picked. Put it in a paper bag to ripen faster. The cantaloupe will release ethylene gas, which is a plant hormone that will make it ripen. Putting it in the bag will trap the ethylene gas, making it ripen faster.
Ripen until it meets all the characteristics mentioned in the video. Thanks for watching!
WHY ARE YOU YELLING?
@@Renee-rw7unNOT, CAPS 2 C… CANT SEE LOWER CASE…
We call them Athena melons here in Florida. California cantaloupe simply sucks, I avoid it.
Yes, I agree that the Western cantaloupes are less flavorful. They have a lower sugar content, which makes them last longer when you cut them up. That's why the grocery stores prefer them for their pre-cut fruit bowls.
Cantaloupes and muskmelons do not ripen at all after they are picked. When consumers try to ripen them, the flesh slowly turns brown and rots starting at the stem end. I have personally tried to ripen a cantaloupe and found this to be true.
All out of season cantaloupes are not ripe, and can't be ripened. Yet all year round the supermarkets in my area have cantaloupes in stock. Who is eating all these unripe melons?
To find a ripe cantaloupe stick a fingernail into the stem end, the flesh should feel soft and be cut easily by your nail. On a ripe cantaloupe the stem end is soft like the flesh. After you find your first ripe cantaloupe using this method, just press a finger into the stem end and feel it yield to slight pressure.
The only thing you did not tell us is where to find the ripe ones.Every place I shopped they sell green like hell and some yellow that when you cut taste like pink cucumbers
If the fruit doesn't seem to be quite ripe, don't refrigerate it when you get it home. Leave it out for a day or two. It will continue to ripen. I do this with cantelope, honeydew (get those with yellow rather than green skin -- they're sweeter), peaches, plums, avocados (I've gotten some that are hard as a rock, but after a couple days, they're perfect), anything that needs to ripen.
Ummm- that thumbnail tho...😄
My cantaloupes almost never ripen, always so hard tried in the fridge, days on the counter. My sense of smell is not the best. Evil cantaloupes.
Cultivate a friend with an excellent sense of smell. Even if you have to bribe them
Cantaloupe are all about the smell. Greener can smell sweet, but don't be fooled. The ready ripe ones have a depth in their aroma that greener just doesn't have. Learn the melon!
How can you tell if they are over ripe? I bought one several weeks ago and it tasted like it was fermenting. Threw it right into the trash.
Fermented cantaloupes smell fermented. You can smell the alcohol from the sugars. And they are really soft.
I just smell. That is the only way. The ones that smell sweet will certainly be sweet.
Miss leading it is not a cantalope at our stores in Ohio....They are hard as rocks no smell so what do you think take a chanch or move on to the other crap that they stores are sell not like when I grew up....
If it doesn't fit the criteria in this video, I would move on and get something else.
These ones??? 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
Ok the only thing I do not like is I hate listening to someone chewing their food,I know it might just be me…
$2.50 ? Ugh😮
Can you do mangos next
Thanks for the suggestion.
