The majority of my work is photo shoots with actresses and models for magazine covers and spreads etc. I also do actress for the red carpet and movie promotion and runway shows during fashion week (as the head MUA). This is what I'm getting
    1. Choose an industry
    2. Study it
    3. Build up a portfolio
    4. Talk to an agent
    5. Become an assistant
    6. Make connections
    7. Work your way up
    Make connections may be a different number, but if anyone else has any insight, I'd love to hear it!

    If you ever get sick of make-up, you could do really well as a life coach! I'm not interested in being a make-up artist but this is very good advice for pursuing the things I am interested in.

    I got a bit teary eyed towards the end when you talked about thinking of your goals and where you want to end up and going for your dreams. I'm a working makeup artist for a counter, and you just reminded me why I started here. This was just the first step. Thank you for reminding me. Time for the next climb and to take the plunge. Wish I could assist for you :-D

    just stumbled upon this at the perfect time. I'm starting an actual make up course in the autumn and all of my family, friends and tutors are trying to talk me out of it. I'm not trying to 'toot my own horn' or anything but I'm a b/a/a* grade student and everyone sees make up as a 'waste of a brain' but it's what I've wanted to do this for years and I've, foolishly, come close to almost giving up on it. sorry for the rambly comment but thank you

    • @phoebeel
      @phoebeel 9 років тому +13

      Ignore What other people say. Its your life and if it's your passion and you are successful and/or happy with it, then you're not wasting your brain. Smart comes in different forms. If you can do a great make up and make people feel better about themselves, or help to create a certain piece, you are doing a service for the community. Do you :)

    • @HiMyNamesVictoria
      @HiMyNamesVictoria 9 років тому +8

      +Stacey Hucknall Oh my gosh I'm in the exact same boat! I really want to study makeup and everyone around me is also saying it's a waste of my brain and private education. It's hard when the people who tell you to 'follow your dreams' then don't actually believe your dream is good enough and aren't very supportive =/ I see your comment was posted 8 months ago. I hope you are studying makeup now :)

    • @staceyhucknall8539
      @staceyhucknall8539 9 років тому +3

      DO IT! FOLLOW WHAT YOU WANT TO DO! have been on this course for just over a month now and its been everything i could've hoped for and more. do what you want to do because, if you somehow hate it, you can change your mind still. we're young, we have access to education and a plethora of choices. do what you want, not what your family want you to do!

    • @itslisanne
      @itslisanne 9 років тому +2

      Stacey Hucknall I have been on a year long course for a month as well! Haha, I love it! The people around me are more suportive, although they don't really understand what my real goal as a mua is. I want to have a career like Lisa has, but they think working in a drugstore or doing people's makeup for parties and weddings is all there is... We will have to prove them wrong!

    @SweetGingerbread16 yes I do plan on doing more. This is very much the first step and the first thing to consider as I noticed from all the tons of letters that there was a bit of confusion about the different types of careers in the make-up world. I dont know a whole lot about the movie/TV make-up industry but I could definitely expand a lot more on the type of industry I work in x

    I'm a part time makeup artist, but my dream is to become a theater actress or film actress. Maybe that's why I dont excel on makeup because its not my dream, I'm not excited doing it on others (maybe on me yes), I just do it for extra cash and allowance.. I got sidetracked and this video made me realize that time is ticking.. And I cant do everything all at once. You're the best makeup artist for me Lisa. Whenever I need a makeup look, I check out your videos because yours are not those crazy exaggerated eyebrow or contour or fake huuge lips.Its a makeup that guys would love on women. You're such an inspiration. :)

    'What is your end goal? What's your dream? Where do you want to be five years from now? What is your absolute dream? We gotta try. Get on the right train so you end up at the right destination. Focus on what you want to do. ' It applies to so many things, Lisa, really inspiring video. I also have a goal and have to work my way up to reach it. I'd rather fall on my face trying than being scared of ever taking the plunge. It's no way to live.

    I'm watching this as a fashion designer with no inclination to be a make up artist (though oh god do I love make up, which is why I am here.)
    The advice of "where do you want to be in 5 years," getting on wrong trains and the unfocused career meandering has reminded me of my dream of getting my own label; I do not want to wake up in 10 years, aged 39, and regret my career choices.
    Thank you for the reminder, I needed it. Our respected industries aren't so different, so your advice is gold.

    Seriously more than 90% of them wants to be MUA is because of all the youtubers... and they only have seen the shining side of it.. And most of them dont practice arts or drawings or what's so ever... have no ideas about color theory, color & design, or anything like the planes of the head, differences between different types of shadows...... A MUA is an Artist... you cant know nothing of the basics of fine art and expecting to be one..... Think about a tattoo artist v.s. a tattoo-er........

    • @Gemini_Woman

      I agree with you being a make-up artist isn't just about putting makeup on someone. You need to at least know the basics of the colour wheel. Contrasting shades complimenting shades warm and cool and neutral tones. You need to understand how shadow and light works you need to learn anatomy and how the bone structure works it isn't just about applying products on to people's faces it's much much more than that

    Hello Lisa, first of all thank you for this video. I can not even begin to tell you how this is a "sign" for me to come across this video (dated 2011) now, today. For almost 6 months now I feel like I've come to one of the cross roads in my makeup career, and I always have big dreams and hopes. I am one of the makeup artists who does everything (from editorial to prosthetics, you name it), and I think the time has come for me to narrow it down to one. Runway and editorial is my passion and yes it is scary to dive in and possibly relocate, but at least I know I've tried and put in my best effort. Thank you for everything.

    I have no desire in becoming a makeup artist, can hardly do my own LOL. But i think this is very inspirational. Especially for all the ladies out there pursuing their dream, whatever it may be. It is very important to focus on one thing and stay on track, i know i got side-tracked so much in the past. And this again reminds me to stay focus. Don't let everyone tell you that you can't do it, as i hear a lot of that too. Good Luck to all of us.

    I've found that my training in makeup for the stage and having been involved in theater productions for over 10 years, it has forayed nicely into a film career. Being "backstage" is very similar to being "behind the scenes" so the transition from one to the other has been nice and comfy. But really, film found me. I've spent the last year working on my print work, but I keep being called back into film. I enjoy photoshoots like you couldn't believe, but "behind the scenes" feels like home.

    I'm doing freelance and I feel like I get to learn a lot more, have done two short films and wedding type makeup, used to work for MAC and quit in the middle of my contract, they got a little angry but I knew that I needed to be off retail to actually grow as a MUA and find my way. Thank you for this video!!! xoxo

    You left me with goose bumps . Beautiful video! You got to be the best mother! This video has only one topic: follow your dreams! God, it's inspiring for everyone, not only for aspiring make-up artists. You got very close to my heart, I'm very touched! Thanks for everything! Until next!

    I just want to thank you Lisa. You have really inspired me and gave me some real insight and sense of direction. I have always loved makeup and I literally hurt everyday because I feel like I am not getting any closer to my goal (of becoming a makeup artist). And I want it so badly that I want to do it all but you are right I have to choose one thing and go with it. I know I mustn't give up. I will keep fighting. Thank you so much.

    You've just inspired me to get back out there, to pursue my dreams of becoming a successful female auto mechanic. What you said about being mindful of one's dream when choosing jobs is brilliant. Though I'm trained and have apprenticed as a mechanic, I've been coaxed into roles as a service advisor for the past few years. That's not what I want for myself, it's just proven to be the path of least resistance. Well, it's time to put on a brave face - employing your makeup tricks, of course -

    Wow! Thanks a lot for the encouraging words and most of all thank you for shedding more light on makeup artistry. Not once did you bore me to tears. In fact the sincerity in your voice was very engaging and really helped me iron out a lot of questions in my head. My key takeaway was "just do it:)!" Thanks again, Lisa!

    Lisa, I just want to share with you that I am so inspired by your work, your poise, and your passion, which you express with such elegance. I have always had a passion for makeup and hair, but for some reason it has taken me until now-in my early 30's and with 3 kids- to decide to pursue this as a career. I have learned so much from you, as well as some wonderfully written books and just playing on various faces, lol. Just thought you should know what a positive influence you are!

    Like so many others here, this just inspired me so intensely. I'm 20 and got out of school last year, until now I've worked in retail for a while (because I had plans to go abroad which got thrown over) and now I'm kind of in the middle of a crossroad that has just about a million roads attached to it. I'm completely terrified to death about the future, and had been slowly planning on going to university, studying english language and literature because I've always had a good connection to that field of study, but yesterday my boyfriend kind of gave me an unintended nudge. He said to me that for the fact that I enjoy literature and writing myself so much, I've been writing and reading frightening little in the 2 1/2 months we've been with each other now. (He really has a killer intuition) It was meant very innocently and because his path has been rocky, he's really keen on me doing what I actually love and what I'm interested in and just made me think what do I spend my time doing, what do I research about and what can I see myself doing. I'm still terrified, but I'm a lot more enlightened. Big thank you to Lisa, for this video and the work she's been doing xx

    I like how you pointed out the travel and living out of a suite case.
    Many long hours as well, my husband is in the film industry and his hours suck. However a love for what you do can make it very rewarding.
    Thanks for the very informative video

    Thank u for this video. This makes me reevaluate my plans after high school. Im a senior & a cosmetology student. I was planning on going to school for fashion merchandising & starting a blog in order to network, work as an editor in chief of a magazine, own my own hair&make up& fashion styling business, becoming a personal shopper, being a market researcher forecasting upcoming fashion trends, doing hair & make up for runways& within high fashion but this all seems like too much idk what to do

    @gclay20 a short course is fine to cover all the basics and then its a case of trying to assist established MUA's, doing shoots for free (testing) with new photographers and models who are starting out just like you, and practicing as much as possible. At the same time you need to be making as many contacts as possible...young new photographers etc. The good thing about assisting established people is you get to meet all the other assistants on the shoot too which brings testing opportunities x

    Lisa, are you reading my mind?!? I'm shooting my portfolio this Sunday to start my MUA bridal and special events business. Still unemployed for 8 months after working for years in the financial industry I decided enough is enough and take the plunge. It will be hard, but I will be my own boss, and that freedom is valuable. My only regret is that I didn't do this earlier, when I first moved to the UK in 2001 - that was my goal but circumstances made it not possible. Better late than never, eh?

    You never bore us Lisa. This was so great! I am moving to California from a small town in PA and I have to say I feel kind of down. I have to start all over in a more saturated place. :( I finally got my bridal business going with more inquiries than I can handle and I now must let it go, but my mother needs me and I just hope I can motivate myself to start all over.

    Well, after your and Wayne Goss' influence and wise advice, I've decided to become a makeup artist. But there's a twist, I'm nearly 60 (in July). However, I look years younger because (as an ex model who's been good advice and teaching) I've taken care of my skin and can make the best use of makeup. Ambition isn't just for young people. Whilst the years are against me for stellar success, I will be the best I can be and make people look and, importantly, feel wonderful.
