Big Canvas Painting Demo: Embracing the Messy Middle 🎨
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 лис 2024
- In this week's video, I continue working on the abstract painting from my previous video. It already has some marks and collage papers on it, and now I am building up layers and integrating mixed media elements using acrylic paint, including fluid and slow-drying open acrylic.
I've well and truly entered the middle zone with this painting, where doubts can surface, and often the painting seems to get worse before it gets better. As I dive deeper into larger-scale painting, I'm learning to embrace this stage and not be in such a rush to find a resolution to my painting. It's okay to let things get messy, and, in fact, I often reach for supplies that help with this, like baby wipes, silicone tools, water spray bottles, rags, brayers, and anything else that I can use to smudge and mess up my marks.
Once the painting has plenty of surface texture and interesting marks, I'll spend time refining and calming areas, but for now, it's all about building it up!
Let me know if you're interested in seeing what happens next. I'm enjoying this relaxed approach to creating UA-cam videos, where I invite you into one of my painting sessions and share what I am up to. There is little planning involved, just unfiltered painting. I hope you enjoy too!
Thank you for your support here on UA-cam ❤️

Yes, more please. Thanks!
Yes please continue to share your process. It’s actually very inspiring hearing your thoughts and also seeing you ‘ruin’ your painting.
Yes, please. I am eager to see the unfolding of your process and what and how you decide when the painting is finished.
I love your book of techniques you want to try…I always have a list like that but putting them down in a pretty notebook is a great idea!
I'd definitely like to see you keep working on this painting!!!
I really enjoy seeing your process, Laura. Please keep the videos coming!
Your opus quietly enters the mind and calms it.
Ty so much, Laura! Yes, please continue with filming this canvas!
Love watching you paint. Please share more ❤
Oh my goodness, Laura! Such an education you just gave me! This particular video truly highlighted just how MUCH I don't allow myself freedom of movement. How loud my inner critic is and how it is in ongoing judgment of just about ANYTHING I have intuitively done or attempted in the past. You made nearly identical marks on your canvas that I have made before, yet, then, just instantly threw the paper away because it made no 'sense' to me! I can see now how restrictive and even constrictive my thinking mind is in direct opposition to my inner need to be free-flowing and for the most part, non-thinking. You gave my mind and actions the language I needed, by simply saying you didn't want to get "ahead' of yourself!! WOW! Thank you ever so much for allowing us to hear your thoughts and the reasons why you did or did not do something. I've definitely watched your videos on a good number of occasions and have always felt great appreciation for all of your work. This is why I have followed you for so long and even taken a class from you. However. For whatever reason, this has been quite an eye-opening adventure for me, today. I can see so clearly, that for the most part, I've never fully allowed myself to go through the uncomfortable, risk-taking stages for my painting project to fully reveal itself. This post may very well sound as though I'm haranguing myself, but I really am not. In truth, now I feel quite excited at the prospect of applying what I just uncovered! I imagine from all I've shared here that it's easy to see what a complete 'newbie' I am. I was born deeply curious and quite adventuresome in most other areas of my life. I will now simply carry those aspects of myself over into this creative realm. How peculiar that today would be THE day for REALLY taking this piece of information in, and fully digesting it. I have no idea how many times I've heard not only you, but numerous other artists say the same things I'm just happy that I finally DID. THANK YOU very, very much, Laura! I love your work. I love your new studio!! All the BEST!!
Love hearing your thoughts as you go, look forward to see your final layer.😊
I really love watching your process, and the choices you make, the marks, drips, colours, covering things up. I love the idea of "risk-taking" - I think it is how we become more of ourselves - daring to do things that may feel a bit uncomfortable, but that really call to us! We are more than we seem, and I believe that painting in this manner that feels a bit wild and free helps us open up to embrace all of our self - and make better art in the process. I am happy to see more of your process and your thoughts while painting! I hope you'll continue to show us the evolution of this painting!
Such a beautiful comment......and one I can fully relate to! ❤
Yes, love watching the painting unfold, so more like this, please!
Thank you Laura! Your videos are not only peaceful and fun to watch but also I am learning a lot about colors and taking chances with the big strokes of the brush.
Thank you, I'm feeling like I want to go even bigger with my brushes and strokes, it's liberating!! Glad you enjoyed, and found peaceful too.
@@LauraHornArtDoing so will inspire a lot of us! Yes, go for it!❤
Wonderful work and brilliant video. More please
Yes, please share more process and finished pieces.
This was so informative. Thank you. I love learning about process. So yes please…. More
I'm super impressed...by now I would have gotten so frustrated with the whole thing. You are very patient seeing what reveals itself!! Hope we get to see the end piece!
Gosh! I can so relate to your comment! Ha!!
Laura, this was wonderful, as always. I plan to watch this video again. Thanks so much. Please do more!!!!!!! So grateful. Sondra Borrie
When i first found your channel i found it intimidating.
I have never thought about getting out of my comfort zone like this before.
I appreciate your style so much and it’s teaching me how to “freedom paint” it’s so bold and I can’t wait to explore this style a lot more.
I love the term "freedom paint", It captures it perfectly. I am so glad that you are feeling less intimidated! Once you step out of your comfort zone, it's addictive because it is so liberating and teaches us about life just as much as about art.
@@LauraHornArt
I couldn’t agree more. ♥️
I would love to see more of your process on bigger canvases. I do enjoy your style, it is so peaceful and inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
Yes! More painting videos please! It is inspiring and educational to watch your process, especially because I'm still at the early stages of learning to paint abstracts with acrylics. It really helps to see experienced artists going through the "messy middle" phase too!
Thank you Laura for making us join you and for the inspiration to make my own big canvas. I would love to see more of this type of videos. Greetings from Sweden ❤
Thank you Laura! As always, the way you share the steps in your creative process and what is going through your mind is immensely relatable, at least for me :)! In 2024 I wish you keep finding your own creative path, with new insights and achievements that make you happy! And please, share it with us! I also would like to have a go at bigger paintings, but the change from watercolors to acrylics is making me hesitate. Perhaps you could dedicate a class or video to this topic? Warm greetings from Portugal, Teresa
Laura, thank you so much! You are a very inspiring artist and teacher!❤
Yes keep these coming! Love watching how you work by layers and can’t wait to see more! ❤
Would love to see more! ❤
Yes, I definitely want to see how this painting develops! Ty! ❤
Love watching your process and hearing your thoughts as you go Laura, thank you! I wonder if you can say what is that dark blue paint you are using? Golden Open in Prussian Blue maybe? It looks too dark for ultramarine but I can’t quite tell - it’s such a lovely color addition to the canvas!
Thank you Laura, I loved watching you show the steps you take in creating your work and I’d definitely like to see more of these kind of videos. BTW your online classes are amazing!💕
Thank you! I've been trying all different types of video styles for UA-cam, and I've realised recent that I really like just getting to work and talking through what I am doing!! Glad it is helpful, it's similar to classes, but a bit less structured and more freedom to veer off course!
Wow this canvas has already come a long way. Yes, I definitely would love to see where this painting ends up - the colours are gorgeous and the gelli prints were certainly a great way to start your process.
I especially liked watching you use the catalyst tools to create interest and texture.
The mentioned podcast sounds like an inspiring listen. It is hard to let go of layers, but often it's the only way forward to something bigger and better.
Yes pls I really struggle keeping ideas together in one place and keeping notes of what I am doing, I get so involved with painting and can't be bothered to stop and take notes :(
Thankyou Laura for sharing your thoughts and applications here. I would love to see more of these videos. I dare say i believe that i will enrol in one of your courses next year. Victor Harbor here,❤
Thanks Helen, ooh Victor Harbour, love it there. We often spend our summers around your area, though this year we are going further afield interstate. Glad you enjoyed the video, might see you in a class next year! ☺
Yes!!! Please more😀😀 and thank you! You are incredibly inspiring and wonderfully educational. I look forward to more💕💕
More to come!
Love watching your process. Would like to watch more as it evolves. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, it would be really nice to see what happen next, how the painting evolve. Your process is really inspiring.
I will certainly keep that in mind! Thank you for such kind feedback 😊
Very inspirational video, thank you Laura. Would love to see more of your painting demos.
Thank you for commenting and letting me know. I am beginning to think about my UA-cam plan for next year and I want to focus more on art demos, as that way I can progress my paintings while also making videos!!
Thanks for your honesty during the process.
Thanks. Loving watching how your creative process is evolving, in whatever way you wish to share.
Also loving the last two shirts you’ve worn. What gorgeous prints. 💗
Thanks so much!
Thanks a lot for this video so inspiring and instructive. I love the quote about the necessity not to fear ruining our canvas in order to carry on. I'd love to see what's happening next with this canva ! Thanks for sharing the evolution if you can. 🙂
I'd love to see this painting progress Laura. I am enjoying the process and your comments. Thanks
I loved watching you paint and talk about your thoughts behind your process! Thank you for sharing! 💜💜
You are so welcome! Glad you enjoyed it! I loved making this video. It's quite helpful for me to talk through my process in this way. Win! Win!
Thank you, Laura! Yes, would love to see how this canvas evolved.
You got it!
This was brilliant, thank you. When you turned the canvas around, there were so many possibilities. I’ve never done this, or used gel prints in this way. I’m inspired, thank you!
So happy to hear that, I find the gel prints really get you thinking differently about marks and imagery. And the canvas flipping always opens up possibilities. It would be fun to do a session with timed canvas flips, e.g. paint for 5 mins, flip, paint another 5 mins, flip again. etc. Might try that! ☺
@@LauraHornArt😂
@@LauraHornArt now that would be fun, and yes, the prints would create a point to start from.
Really enjoyed seeing the changes you made to this. The progression into the bigger and bolder marks (that you said you're being mindful of upscaling due to working on the smaller scale pieces) were perfectly impactful 😊 love it all!
Thank you for continuing to share the evolution of this canvas with us! I would very much like to see what happens next - I have similarly started a big canvass but reached a point where I’ve lost momentum and almost feel intimidated to get back to it. I love the tip of keeping a note book close by with hints and tips as to mark making ideas for when you get lost, and the bottles with mixed colours is flippin’ genius! Thank you, and definitely more please! …oh, and how do you stay so calm with your work? 😊
Enjoy whole process.utilization of different material …mark makings etc…thanks for sharing…
Thanks for watching!
👏👏👏
🤩
Yes, more videos please ☺️
Thank you. Definitely planning more for 2024!
Love watching you work. Thank you for sharing your thought process.
this is stunning, i love your videos ❤❤❤
Hi Laura thanks for another amazing inspiring video. I’ve got all excited because I’m I’ve seen that beautiful navy blue. You applied it after you turned your canvas upside down and let it dry. Around 10.52. You mentioned it was a golden open acrylic. I looked at the colour chart and couldn’t see the colour. Is it something that you’ve mixed Perhaps? Or if it isn’t, would you be able to tell me the name of it please? I watch heaps of your videos and of course listen to you and your husband on your podcast. You do some beautiful Art. Very grateful that you are out there sharing your art wisdom 🙏👍🖌️🖼️😍
Hi Jayne, thanks for the lovely comment. I am pretty sure that colour is Anthraquinone Blue. A lovely pigment that I use a lot!
Yes please would love to see where you took this painting. Your process is really interesting.
Oh my goodness Laura, watching you move around the painting, apply, remove, rotate, study.....on and on, it's just so mesmerizing to see how you are thinking through your creative process. I'm just so thankful to have found you, and loved the MMM course. Now I'm preparing to dive into the Creative Blend course, and my plan was to wait until January 1, although watching this video today has me rethinking that start date. 😛 Thank you for sharing your processes, your talent and creativity with the world. You are so inspiring!
Thanks Sheila, so happy to read your comment and know that the video is helpful, as this type of video, where I am just working and talking through my process is my favourite style to make, maybe because I almost forget the camera is there! Enjoy Creative Blend, probably no harm in watching a few videos now! No time like the present after all ☺
@@LauraHornArt 😍
Thank you so much for sharing your painting process! This inspires me and reminds me to have fun and play when Im painting. I can always cover up different parts if I end up not liking it.
That is exactly right! There's nothing that cannot be "fixed" but more than likely you'll discover things that bring you joy by playing in the messy middle part! 😊🎨 Happy painting!
I am inspired watching your process would love seeing where you end up with this one. What is that beautiful greenish color you have used. I love it!
For those wanting a cheaper option than the catalyst tools you can buy silicon baking spatulas. They work very well and you can snip bits out of the ends in grooves for various effects.
Absolutely! That's a wonderful tip!
Thank you so much
Loving your large works.
Great video I would love to see more videos about ur painting process.
Instantly fell in love with your art and techniques 😍 keep on doing what you do!
Thank you so much!!
Love your larger work…..pretty
I would like to see where this painting goes and is final iteration! Thank you.
Thank you! I'm going to keep filming this one to share more. I bet it ends up really different from how it looks now!
I love watching your process. You are generous to share! Would love to see where this canvas goes. It’s so fun to get these cozy peeks into your new studio…I always look forward to your longer form video links in my email! 💕
Thank you so much! Delighted to hear that. I really enjoy sharing the cosy studio snippets! The studio is definitely my happy place. 🎨🌿😊
Brave!!Thank you:)
I always have the trouble that I am happy with a piece and don't want to go further which my Tutor's wanted me to do when I did my degree. I suppose for me I should photograph it at the stages then I have a copy of it and can then move on. I would lije to see how you take this further please.
Thank you!
I'm very interested in watching you paint on large canvases.
Noted! Thanks for watching!
Laura this was so helpful. Do you have a video of how you took this painting from the messy middle to the end? ❤
Not yet! This canvas ended up getting parked as I had other work to do, but I do have it waiting and will try and film the next stage.
@@LauraHornArt can’t wait to see it and the new course 🥰
Oh I love that quote about risking ruining a painting to make it better.
I’m also wondering about the paint you have mixed in the bottles, is it just paint and water? Or?
❤❤❤❤
😍
Lovely video, thank you, very inspiring!
(I noticed with the audio that it's in mono, just thought I'd let you know 😊 (11:35 it comes good)
Oh thank you!
Nice space 😍
Thank you! 😊
Hi Laura do you see the face that emerges at 15:36. There’s an eye and a mouth on the left side of the painting. It’s very cool.
I'll have to check it out because I didn't see it as I was painting! Faces always seem to emerge. I recently bought a book about painting faces, maybe it's a sign!
Wondering how you finish the sides of canvas…
Do you have the finished painting in another video?
Not as yet, but I do hope to share down the track. I've been refocused on my smaller works, but I do want to work on the big pieces again!
Love it! just out of interest, why do you cover up the lovely first paper layers? Some of their delicate patterns become covered over. I am new to this so unsure of things. Thank you.
Hi, there is now no sound on this video.
